I never knew there was another version besides the 1962 movie with Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick. This one stars Cliff Robertson and Piper Laurie. Charles Bickford stars in both as the woman's father.
Apparently this was a made for TV movie that was a combination of live and pre-taped direction from John Frankenhooker. It's the story of an alcoholic couple, a story I can relate to from my past. I thought this version was a good deal better. A big reason is the format; it makes it all seem so much more real and intimate, and it's a tough and all too common story anyway. It doesn't have the greatest print and I watched it on Prime. The lesser picture probably adds to the impact, but the sound could be better. A very nice pick for me.

Just read your profile and happy to see a fellow "Detroiter". So, my three suggestions center around our great city.
"True Romance" ('93 - Tony Scott)
In Detroit, a lonely pop culture geek marries a call girl, steals cocaine from her pimp, and tries to sell it in Hollywood. Meanwhile, the owners of the cocaine, the Mob, track them down in an attempt to reclaim it.
"White Boy Rick" ('18 - Yann Demange)
The story of teenager Richard Wershe Jr., who became an undercover informant for the FBI during the 1980s and was ultimately arrested for drug-trafficking and sentenced to life in prison.
"Narc" ('02 - Joe Carnahan)
When the trail goes cold on a murder investigation of a policeman an undercover narcotics officer is lured back to the force to help solve the case.

RocknRolla (2008) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1032755/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0) A relatively unknown, early Guy Ritchie film that you may get a kick out of.
This be my choice.
The Final Solution: The Wannsee Conference (1984) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088377/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0) Did not see this, but did see that you commented that it was on your Watchlist, so. . . Just watched a film called "Conspiracy". Which is about the very exact subject matter. So pass...
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2278388/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0) I have tried, on multiple cases, to try to get into Wes Anderson and this, THIS, is the shining exception that I continually rewatch and love. The quirky comedic aspects just might be up your alley, should you not have seen this already.
Not a fan of Wes, tried a few of his films. Not a fan of his style. So pass...

I had been thinking about that movie for you ever since I joined the HoFs. Once you talked about wanting to see really great movies about alcoholics and I always thought this one rang true. I had a friend who was an alcoholic all of his adult life and was very much like Cliff Robertson in his personality. His wife had a lot in common with Piper Laurie and added to his misery. It's kind of sad thinking about that, so I will just say glad you liked it.

Very COOL!
Let's see, I own True Romance and seen it countless times and I've enjoyed Narc the couple of times I've seen it so it looks like I'll be checking out White Boy Rick. Curious to see how close to the truth they come. Have you seen this one?
Also, hope you enjoy RocknRolla ;)

About "White Boy Rick", without giving up anything. When this went down, I was living in Hazel Park and working in Warren. I think this film does the story justice. I'm biased because its a local story, but some say the film drags in parts. I disagree...

I watched Sophie's Place. Normally, I am a big fan of experimental animation, but in my experience it works best in short film form. I do believe if I was given a Larry Jordan short film as an option instead of this feature, I may have enjoyed it. But at 80 minutes it overstayed its welcome with me. I don't really have a problem with crude animation, but since I can't really grasp what any of the symbolism mean, the animation has to reach a certain standard to work for me. It doesn't reach that with me. As far as abstract, highly symbolic, experimental animated films go, Suzan Pitt's Asparagus is much more my style than this film. 2
Sorry Allaby. I wish I would have enjoyed it more, but I do appreciate you offering it up to me. I do think it deserves credit for being original and not trying to be mainstream in any way.

An East Sider! NICE! Grew up in Center Line. Was in Warren during that time. With a 6 month stint living near 7 & Gratiot in an upper flat. Had a buddy in Grosse Pointe who actually met him at a house he would stop by at, once upon a time.
I was researching the Truth vs Film last night and noticed something they really downplayed at the time and afterward around here. At least I don't remember hearing of it. Or perhaps I simply just missed it and wasn't paying attention. Which was the info he had on corrupt cops/officials. We all knew Gill was dirty, along with -- well, pretty much everyone from Da Mayor on down. But no one talked about Wershe helping on that level. Only that he ratted on Curry and a few others and that he got left in the wind after squealing on his "friends".
It certainly explains why he was locked up without parole for so godd@mn long instead of getting Witness Protection.

Surprised by not hearing of this film before. The last I heard from Guy Ritchie, he was boinking a local girl here named Madonna. I do love a good crime drama/comedy and this fit that bill. The story line was alright, but the real focus was on its stellar cast. Especially Tom Wilkenson and Tom Hardy here.
Overall, a better than average fun film

The Swimmer (1968)
Very few films evoke my emotions or stir my imagination like The Swimmer did. I'm still reflecting on the odyssey that the swimmer took and the meaning of it all. I appreciate that the film doesn't explain the swimmer's back story...and I don't need to know it either. It's more than enough to experience the pathos of a lost soul homeward bound.

Lancaster was so good in this. Sometimes in his movies he plays it 'large' but he had the perfect personality to pull this role off. And OMG was Joan Rivers that young, she was really good in it too.

I finally saw this last year myself.
I remember catching a little bit of it (probably on TCM) a long time ago and being so intrigued by the concept of "swimming home" one pool at a time that I spent years wanting to see this movie, but never being able to find it.
Not knowing the backstory is integral as the movie revolves around the audience trying to put those pieces together, but only in the vaguest sense as subtle clues are dropped throughout the story.
Also intense is how the weather & cinematography gradually changes along with the attitude of the Swimmer as his odyssey progresses.
Very thought provoking and a total head trip.
An aside: the film is based on a short story by John Cheever who'd I'd only ever heard of on Seinfeld (thus, I wasn't even sure he was real when first hearing his name mentioned on a sit com). On an episode of Seinfeld it's revealed through found love letters that George's fiancée; Susan's father once had a sexual interlude & affair with author John Cheever!

Sorry to go on... but I can't say enough about The Swimmer.
One funny thing is, since I'd only seen a small bit of it on TV, with the parts I saw being more toward the beginning, I kind of guessed this movie might be one about self-discovery and be an uplifting message of growth, hope, motivation and inspiration. (So I had that in my mind as a guess about the rest of the movie for those years I wanted to see the whole film.)
Well... as you can guess... I was part right about the self-discovery thing (maybe) but was in for a major surprise for the rest! :)

We never know...
Perhaps a rehab center, a mental hospital, a debtor's prison, another neighbor's, friend's or relative's house who had tried to help him recover from a trauma (with maybe an even nicer pool), or a long trip that took him far from his former home in an effort to forget.
We're left to wonder if he was suffering from amnesia - as his memories & pain are slowly brought back to him as familiar things remind him as he swims, or if he was just in a severe state of denial due to the problems & traumatic events that occurred with his family - some of which we learn he bore at least some responsibility for. We can also speculate that, as he remembers his own role in whatever happened, his new shiny reality (apparently a construct of his own denial) slowly begins to cave in on him... like an old pool that's falling apart.

Yes! I think you miss a lot in one go-round, mostly because you're not looking for it. There are lots of hints and clues you weren't aware were being provided the first time you see it. So it's a film that is probably interesting to watch a second time once you know the ending.

Black Moon (1975) Directed by Louis Malle and starring Cathryn Harrison, this weird and wonderful fantasy drama is about a young woman who meets a strange family at a remote farmhouse, complete with a talking unicorn and naked children.
Ace in the Hole (1951) Directed by Billy Wilder and starring Kirk Douglas, this film is about a journalist who exploits the story of a man trapped in a cave, only to have the situation escalate out of control.
Dressed to Kill (1980) Directed by Brian De Palma and starring Michael Caine, Angie Dickinson, and Nancy Allen. A fun mystery/thriller about a call girl who becomes a target after witnessing a murder.

"Summer of '42" ('71 - Mulligan)
During his summer vacation on Nantucket Island in 1942, a youth eagerly awaiting his first sexual encounter finds himself developing an innocent love for a young woman awaiting news on her soldier husband's fate in WWII.
"Sorcerer" ('77 - Friedkin)
Four unfortunate men from different parts of the globe agree to risk their lives transporting gallons of nitroglycerin across dangerous Latin American jungle.
"The Killing of a Chinese Bookie" ('76 - Cassevetes)
A proud strip club owner is forced to come to terms with himself as a man, when his gambling addiction gets him in hot water with the mob, who offer him only one alternative.

I just finished watching Summer of '42 (1971), recommended by John Dumbear. Directed by Robert Mulligan, this romantic drama stars Jennifer O'Neill and Gary Grimes. A teen in the summer of 1942 falls for a married woman. I liked this film. The screenplay was well written and the cinematography was lovely. This was a great pick because it was not known to me and it's a hell of a movie. It's Arabic, set in Egypt amid actual times of political and religious unrest. It's a one location film set entirely in the back of a paddy wagon. I've seen movies with this concept, one in this Roulette game even, and they've been good movies but yet I felt they could only take me so far. With this movie, you have a variety of people with different beliefs trapped inside together. The difference is that there's bars on the windows and they're mobile. You feel like you're in the vehicle as you see what they're seeing outside. This is a very intense movie that's often upsetting, and much of it is because of blind and unnecessary hate. I bet there are many Hollywood executives trying to figure out how to remake this. More people should see it and they will.;)

Sorry for drifting behind, I WILL be watching John Dumbear's nom, White Boy Rick this weekend and in the meantime, here are my noms for TheUsualSuspect:
The Man Who Would Be King (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073341/) (1975) Sean Connery and Michael Caine team up beautifully for this John Huston film based on a Rudyard Kipling story of two former British soldiers in India looking to be more than just ordinary men set in 19th century India.
The Dirty Dozen (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061578/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0) (1967) Lee Marvin has been given a suicide mission into the enemy's territory on the verge of D-Day during WWII. And his squad? A stellar cast of psychopaths with death sentences that he must whip into a cohesive unit.
It Happened One Night (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0025316/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0) (1934) This is a bit of a wild card for you - a comedic road trip with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert that you may(may not) get a kick out of.

I am a good person/I am a bad person (2011) Canadian film about a mother and daughter touring film festivals in Europe.
Black Cop (2017) A really interesting Canadian film about a black cop who decides to racially profile white people. I found this funny, disturbing and smart with a fantastic lead performance.
Citizen Rules
The Big Combo (1955)
I don't have much to write about this (I've tried to scribble something for the past two days with rather poor success) so I'll keep this short. It's basically a mediocre noir. It has the awesome looks often characteristic to the genre, but the story itself is a bit lame and oddly focused. I guess some of the issues stem from the Hays Code, but I didn't like the way the whole investigation seemed to center around a name traced on a foggy window.
So, outside the visuals, there's nothing remarkably good (or bad) in The Big Combo. Conte is a little cheesy as Mr. Brown, Lee Van Cleef is good as usual, and there's quite little to do for the ladies. In few years, I probably don't remember seeing this.

White Boy Rick (2018) 3.5
Richard Wershe Sr.: Straight talk? Your mother and I. We didn't plan on Dawn.
We didn't plan on you either, but in the end, things worked out.
Rick Wershe Jr.: Dawn is a junkie, I'm sh#ting into a bag. Well, that turned out well.
Richard Wershe Sr.: What can I say, you know? I'm a glass-half-full kind of guy.
Much like the I, Tonya film, it was very good to see beyond the usual bullsh#t that the news spewed and the venom that lasted even longer on the streets when it came to a teenage kid that, like so many others, got the sh#t end of the stick during some very messed up, violent times when crack was rampant, drive-by shootings were - every - single - day and Detroit was labeled The Murder Capital.
While I am very glad to have seen this, it was also a sad experience as well. Thinking back to those very, very scary days that seemed to come to a head. Even though that, like anywhere else, at any given decade, bad sh#t happens. Small-time folks get used in an attempt to go after big-time folks, who, so rarely get what they deserve and the small-timers are the ones that have to pay the debt that never gets fully paid out.
On an odd comment/observation regarding every single Detroit-based film, I have ever seen. Why is it, that it is ALWAYS snowing?? It's always wintertime. Never summer. Ever.
Anyways, THANK YOU John Dumbear for the recommendation!

Shura is amazing. It's one of the best examples of black-and-white enhancing a film and making total sense over color. The way characters would completely disappear by an enveloping darkness while other characters felt super close-up because of the pitch black behind them was amazing. That is just one element of how cool this film is, but it's also super f*cked up, and when the baby got got, I let out an audible gasp. I figured it was going to happen, but there was still a little bit of hope that maybe we could still root for Gengobe. That moment let's you feel like a piece of sh*t for still being on his side after what he did in Fukagawa. I was strongly reminded of Eraserhead during that sequence, because the sound of the baby crying added a lot of tension. Two main reasons why: a) the sound of a baby crying is grating, and b) you also had the fear that Gengobe would do what he did or some other misfortune would befall the child. The effects are all great too. The only thing that really bothered me is why in the world did they keep the sake that Gengobe gave them. I would have instantly poured that out. It did lead to a gruesome scene, so I can't really complain about that. Amazing selection for me, cricket.

Dirty Dozen it is.

The Spirit of the Beehive (1973)
This thread is really like roulette. On a roulette wheel you can take your chances on the red, or on the black or place your chips on a number...Then you spin the wheel and hope you have some luck. So far I've lucked out in my movie choices, but this spin I came up empty.
Out of the three movies Pahak offered up: Sundays and Cybele (1962), The Spirit of the Beehive (1973)
& The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (1976)...I went with this one. I'm sure the other two were good and maybe I would've like them better.
I don't object to anything in this movie, it's just that I was bored to tears. I mean there's scant narrative that's hung on some sketchy dialogue accompanied by two little tykes who can't really act. To that mix add some discombobulated editing, which I'll call Frankenstein editing, get it! and that all made for a very long and tedious 98 minutes.
The one redeeming quality was the cinematography. The film is sure nice to look at and each scene is framed like a still photographer's portfolio. The film is like a series of awesome photos with the story being an after thought. I get that people can watch this and find some truth, but I couldn't...Then again when I look at clouds, I see clouds.

You need to do more drugs :D
Seriously though, I kinda think that you may have liked the other films more. You picked the one that's the least traditional story. I often love films where children's imagination is mixed up with reality, and The Spirit of the Beehive excels in that. I can see how it might feel boring to some but I found it to be very much my kind of film. Sorry, you didn't like it more.

Right after that, I watched another movie little Ana Torrent was in, Cria Cuervos, and liked it much more. You seen Cria Cuervos, pahaK? I think you might like it.

Entertaining and attention was held.. Liked the premise and found it interesting that no one really has a name. Thus, saw it as a psycho-drama that is a conflicted cop-of-color snaps and starts “profiling” white people (the more comfortably middle-class the better) and administering shoe-on-the-other-foot rough justice.

I just watched it. Here's what I wrote to rating thread:
Cría cuervos (1976)
3.5
This was recommended on the basis of my liking of The Spirit of the Beehive. The connection is quite easy to see, and it's not restricted to Ana Torrent. The films share lots of themes (mainly death, and a child dealing with it), but Cria cuervos is less fantastical and less innocent. I wish it had gone deeper into the darkness instead of just continuously hinting at Ana's fascination with death. It trades away too much of the childish charms of The Spirit of the Beehive without ever fully committing to its more morbid path. Oh, and Porque te vas is such a great song and it's used so damn well in this film.
So yeah, a good film but I prefer The Spirit of the Beehive.

Enemy at the Gates 4
This was not what I was expected when it first came out in 2001. Thinking that it was going the silly romance route where the love interest would be caught, and used to bait the "hero" to face off with the the "villain".
Nor did I expect the, not only gritty truth of war time battle, but to discover the reasons why, when seeing the amount of deaths during World War II how Russia nearly doubled everyone else.
The opening battle of recruits stuffed into train cars, then onto boats to join in defending Stalingrad from the winning German invasion. Without leadership, one rifle for every two men, the second carrying one clip of ammo and warned that they will be shot should they stop advancing. And then, they were, in large numbers.
This is the brutal chess board that Jude Law (depicting an historical Russian sniper hero, Vassili Zaitsev) playing a very intelligent game of cat and mouse with a German officer sniper (Ed Harris) sent to take him out.
I truly was mesmerized throughout the entire film and, had I known previously what a gritty, realistic, clever film this was, I would have seen this when it first came out and quite a number of times since.
THANKS TheUsualSuspect for recommending this for me!

A superhero film made on a budget. In a world where people have powers, they are treated more like animals than saviours. These are not your Avengers, these are people labelled "Freaks" and are shot and killed at a moment's notice.
What I appreciated about this movie was that it just drops you into this world without telling you anything and you need to peel back the mystery yourself to understand what is going on. Is the father just crazy or are there real threats outside their house? I didn't know until eyes started bleeding.
Most of the budget went to the special effects, so the story feels very confined, which is fine because it wants to dive deeper into character drama than action. The little girl does a decent job playing against some well-established actors and despite some confusion in the plot, most of the story follows a straight path.
Check out Freaks to see some creativity in filmmaking and if you need a breather from more Marvel friendly affair.

I guess it's a nay from me now. If we ever do this again and I'm in a more fitting mood, I'm in but not now.OK guys, that's cool and I understand.:)

Question for everyone:
I could just tally the points, divided by the number of movies for each member...and that would yield a comparable overall score for each of us. Then we could say who 'won' and be done. That way everyone is included in this.
The other way is to discount the scores from those who didn't want to continue: (PahaK, Suspect, Dumbear) and continue on. The problem there is some of us would already be finished and others would have more movies to watch.
Which option do you guys like? Majority decides.
Well, there's quite a clear "winner" at the moment, and the amount of votes is almost dead even (only ed has 4 while others have 5). To me, it seems that it's much easier to just tally the points now, and start over at another time (the concept is great).
I’m fine either way. If you calculate a winner now and the game ends, I won’t object. I’m good to continue with it too.

I did see four of them. The fourth was from TUS; Enemy At The Gate (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=2183766#post2183766) which was surprisingly good. I rated it 4 stars. We're just missing his rating of my recommendation; The Dirty Dozen to have four scores.
As for continuing or starting over, since several folks are unable to continue it would probably be fair to declare a winner and begin anew. With, perhaps, a few new players to rebuild our ranks?

But...I'm thinking it would be easier if we just declare JJ the winner as he has the most points...and you in 2nd place.
Not that winning matters in this, it's all about the great movies we all watched, but that we can start a second round whenever everyone wants.
I'm up for a second round whenever, any time.

That's some interesting math right there. Average being higher than any of the values :D
3.5 + 3.5 + 3.5 + 3 = 13.5, not 16.5.

This falling off the rails is all my fault and I apologize again to everyone. I hope to be more around here again, but I don't see my life slowing down anytime soon.
I am looking for a new job, which hopefully gives me some more free time.

No apologies necessary - life can and will get the better of all of us.
Thank YOU for coming up with this very fun idea!!
