Oh yes, I love The Shield. I got hooked a little late but, it was one of those shows you just come right in and watch without watching the season before. One of my top 3 favorites here. FX has the best damn series for regular TV.

The Shield rocks!!!
Up to date know, season 4 is on tv at the moment in Scotland, wasn't too sure about Glen Close joining the show, but so far so good.

Now Chilkis is producing, Mackey is getting a fair bit softer, but i'm loving Shane's new role. The gritty Shield is back. And as for Antony Anderson playing the big bad guy , boy was i suprised, he owns the role.

The Shield is awesome, one of the finest American shows around, my other favourites being The Sopranos, Without a Trace and Desperate Housewives. Michael Chiklis is a great actor, and now Glenn Close is in it its even better.
Purchased The shield Season 1 for £19.99 (bargain)

Thought i'd start this thread now Season 6 is on.
John (trust you'll be reading), i'm up to episode 6 now. Enjoying it though it's taking it's time to get into the strong narrative that guides the short seasons really well. Well, it is getting into a narrative but it's dragging the Shane/Lem cliffhanger through the Season and it feels like a tacked on season and not come into it's own. Also, Shane has become the token conflicted cop, Tavon, Antwon, Lem- he always seems to **** up but not really progress which is a shame.

I, for one, am loving Season 6. I'm up to episode 9 yet, FX (the network that plays it in the states) isn't even up to episode 4 or 5, I think. I'm actually starting to not like Vic's character, which is surprising. I'm really starting to dig on Shane, the character is really coming in to his own. It's a shame there's only one more season after this one. By far one of the greatest shows on TV and, hands down, the best cop show on TV. :yup:

I've finished ep 7 now and not impressed thus far, though i do always seem to end up getting distracted on the computer while watching it. It's not going anywhere and recycling old plot material. I thought with Lem gone, Ronnie would go from being the cut out character, but it's still the Mackey and Shane show only without any real bad guy.
John McClane

I disagree, Mackey is the real bad guy now. Sure he isn't as bad as Kavanaugh or Aceveda but, he's still bad.
Pyro Tramp
05-08-07, 07:34 AM
But he's always been bad, that's the thing. He's gotten softer but the opening of Season 1 has his character nailed for the show. Shane isn't the hero, he killed Lem for christ's sake, there's no empathy for him so Mackey's opposition with him doesn't make him the bad guy. Heck, Kavanaugh wasn't even particuarly a bad guy (to start with at least) we just like saw him that way because we like The Strike Team, Kav was trying to put down the bad guys. Though that is the great thing about the show, emphasising with the bad guys. I just miss the Money Train or Kavanaugh plots where there was something driving the Season instead of the Shane/Mackey character clash which is more context than plot.

Sure he's always been bad but, now he's carrying the blunt of the show. I actually sympathize with Shane over Lem's death and, as such, don't really see him as a bad guy. Kavanaugh was the morally conflicted cop when he was on the show. Not really a good guy, just confused. The Shane/Mackey is, I think, setting us up for something huge. I've always been a fan of the "see which each side is planning" story telling.
I wish I could talk about The Shield but we're a season behind you guys down there. I just recently finished Season 5. Still waiting for 6 to come on the tube.

Yeh, my downloads are coming with credits in French.
The Mackey/Shane relation has been stressed too many times previously, though hopefully it will reach the climax with an explosive built up confrontation between the two. Personally, i can't pick a side so i think the conclusion will redeem what i think has been a disappointing season.

I tried to watch it once. The episode was so dark that I felt I couldn't watch it without a buddy. So far I haven't found a bud who wants to watch it with me.
Thank goodness for boxed sets! I can catch up someday.
From what I can tell it's a darn good show.

Anyone remind me what happened last Season?

Guess no one watches this anymore then? So far this Season has been fantastic, really going out on a perfect note. Got a good strong and compelling season narrative and each character is really coming into their own and the conclusion should be spectacular.

I still watch it.
Love The Shield but it's gonna be sad to see end in a few episodes.
Things have been getting pretty hardcore between the Strike Team in the last few weeks.
I always thought that when the show ends Mackey should definately be killed as payback for all te crap he's caused over the series run (he killed another cop in the pilot for starters) but the nearer the end approaches, I kinda don't wanna see that happen anymore.
Maybe he should hook up with that Agent Olivia Murray and disappear overseas somewhere with a few million bucks.
I figure since she was his girlfriend in the Fantastic Four who dumped him after he became the Thing, they deserve a second chance here on the Shield.

Lol, didn't realise that was same woman from FF.
I think someone's gonna have to die at the end but for some reason i see Shane getting away, seems to fit in with the shows twisted morality/justice approach.

One episode left, last one was quite an excellent send up for the shows finale. Personally, it's about on par with the Final Cylon (would be a lot more if i wasn't plagued by a damned over curious personality). I absolutely adore how they carried the characters over this last season, along their own paths and as they intertwine with others. There's the odd ropey bit and Ronnie still can't act but hopefully now each character has the final motivations it should end with a bang. Vic's confession did bring a smile to my face and kinda makes me thing it's a prelude to his death, just so we KNOW he isn't the nicest guy. I still have a nudge Shane will get away as he's been shown to be the sympathetic do anything for his family man. Ronnie, who knows about him? But i think if he survives he's going to kill either Shane or Vic. Claudette probably gonna die of natural causes, that or shag Dutch rotten.
John McClane
11-26-08, 01:05 AM
Hahahaha, I think it's safe to say basically none of what you said happened. Were you surprised by that? What were your thoughts on the finale? I was blown away myself. They couldn't have done any better.
A part of me died after it went off. My soul is dark, cold, and deary. Goodbye The Shield. You were a good friend.

Yeah, i was left feeling sad by the time it ended. Still see Shane as getting away though, in the sense not arrested or killed by Vic like it was leading up to. Claudette's (eventual) death was pretty strongly alluded to though. Was enjoying her and Dutch's investigation into Vic, hoped that they would carry it on a bit more to the end but that did kinda happen last episode when he got his immunity. Shame Ronnie got cut out, would have liked to see his arch finished of a bit better. And would have liked to see Vic and Shane have one last confrontation, hoped for something a bit more explosive.

I figured one of 3 people were gonna off Vic.
Shane out of desperation, Corrine out of fear, or Ronnie out of revenge but no-go.
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/660/vlcsnap608888zz8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
On account of the 'Family Meeting' title of the episode, I thought maybe we'd get a dual ending scene with Mara taking a bullet for Shane saying how she's always loved him or something while Corrine shoots Vic telling him how much she hates him.

Maybe they left it this way in case they ever wanna do any follow-up movies.
Vic at a desk job, Aceveda as Mayor and Ronnie going through hell in prison.

I thought the serial-killer kid story had a long way to go still with him trying to frame Dutch.
(I guess now we know why Ollie got Clark to help him a couple weeks ago with the use of his super-speed instead of Bart now, what with him here killing his mother an' all) :p

Some people have been throwing around the idea that Dutch killed the woman. I'm sure it wasn't the writer's intention but it is a nice ambiguity, especially considering his past (cat killer). It is nice how they avoided a Hollywood ending but still maintain there should have been a few more confrontations and i did want Dutch and Claudette to get Vic.

Just watching Season 5 agian. Have to say Kavanaugh, brilliantly portrayed by Forest Whitaker, has to be one of my all time favourite TV characters. Sublime season of television.

I do believe that Vic sitting at a desk is more torture than just getting killed. Seeing everything we did about Vic on the streets in all the past episodes shows that's his element and that he's not satisfied unless he's on the street bringing the bad guys down. Now he's got to watch from the sidelines as some junior punks take 'em down. Believe me, I think that would be much worse for him, and I think they alluded to that with the very final scene.

Think I'm going to rewatch it all starting now, been too many years.
It's still in my top 5 TV shows ever, a show not so much underrated but rather not as well known as other great shows. Part of the reason was that it was on cable or something in the US.

Yeah, it's one of the best shows. seanc is a big fan too.
When i was a kid and i saw it on Channel Five i thought it looked awful, mostly due to the way Chiklis looks. Wish i had watched it then coz it's fantastic, didn't end up until a few years ago.
Also Walton Goggins is the best TV Actor of the 21st Century IMO. The Shield, Justified and what little i've seen of Vice Principals is an amazing resume.

I watched it when it was on TV, I got the DVD boxsets though and got into it when s2 was out I think. I remember being emotionally blown away by the season 5 finale more than any other TV I remember since, with the exception of some shocking GOT moments.

Yeah such a wide range from Walton in the Shield. The whole cast is great but Shane, Vic and Dutch stand above the others as such fantastic characters.
Some super funny stuff from Shane throughout too, getting attached to his "stupid" chicken on an undercover op, his episode partnered with Dutch inc dating tips, "following up" with hot victims after the incident lol. The stripper episode, pissing on a suspect and getting slapped after in the car by Vic, many more that I cant remember too. When his wife, Marra was she called? came along he stopped being the "lad" that he was a bit and became a bit more serious which was a shame.

I have mixed feelings on that. I think it led to some of the most powerful moments of the show like how Shanes story ended. The problem was they did it way too early, Season 3 i think? Think that was at least two seasons too soon for that because it became a dragged out conflict over four seasons. That was the only consistent problem i think the show had as they did that more than once, like the money train happens in Season 2 and it's still regularly getting brought up Season 6.
Still great show and it's not a major flaw.
Absolutely love. Tied with Sopranos for my fave ever. Season 4 with Close is the best TV I have ever seen. Love Whitaker in 5 as well. Also the greatest pilot. Ok, now I want to rewatch. I never have.

It's a recurring them in the endgame though, they can't escape the sins of the past. No matter how slick Vic is. I always felt they brought up Vic's forced early retirement too soon Aswell, it was like well he is gonna find a way out of that, but I suppose in a way doesn't.
Sean the writing is terrible in the pilot, good episode but it's clear that it isn't the finished article yet. I'm maybe being overcritical though as it's just a pilot.

Loved The Shield. Seen it at least twice. Chiklis has done nothing worthwhile since so far as I know. But correct me if I’m wrong.

I love that guy. Only sw few one offs of the show, though. Was on too late for me.
An outright dreadful waste of time for him in Sons of Anarachy. Not sure why Sutter wanted to insult him. Wasnt he one of The Shield writers?

Good role in HS freak show as the strong man who was married to the gorgeous angela bassett who had three breasts and a 'dingaling'. Sad life.

Not that I know of.
Recently saw him in this movie. Absolutely atrocious. He produced it & played a most unconvincing Brit.
