Van Halen kicking out David Lee Roth

David Lee Roth left the band to pursue a solo career. I don't think he was as talented as Eddie or Alex, though.

Syd Barett from Pink Floyd.

Hmm. I always thought he was kicked out. My mistake.

Ousted, abandoned, asked to leave, dropped, moved on... we could use a whole host of terms. I don't think Matt here is asking who was literally kicked out. But Barrett, who was talented, was pushed out 'in a way' from the band.

The band still cared for him. Very much so. Tried to help him in many ways, but couldn't. And so they dropped him.

The official story (and no one Pink Floyd has EVER strayed from it) is that one member asked, "Shall we pick up Syd?" and someone else replied, "Why bother?" (since he wasn't performing on stage, anyway, unless you consider detuning your guitar), and they never reveal who said what..

Eerie how Syd showed up at the sessions for "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". It took them a while to recognize him, and soon Roger and David were in tears seeing Syd's shape. I always wondered if that was his laugh after the line, "Remember when you were wrong?"

If you watch one of the docs (I think "The Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd Story), they did record some instrumental guitar that they played - nothing but chords.

After Keith Moon died, Kenney Jones (formerly of the Small Faces) replaced him. Talented drummer, but Daltrey was unhappy with Jones’s drumming. So Jones was out & Zak Starkey (Ringo’s son) was in & has been in ever since.

Metallica kicked out Dave Mustaine.

Was Mustaine more talented than Burton? Serious question because I know Burton was considered the most talented of the post-Mustaine Metallica.

High Goatpriest kicked out Swan because Swan can only press one button over and over again. See, he's an electronic musician.

Too funny. If band members were kicked out for alcoholism, there’d be nobody left.

Good point! Cliff Burton was certainly innovative.

Just like Megadeth much better than Metallica.

Jones didn't fit that band at all, and when people think of songs by The Who, no one thinks about the stuff he played on.

I saw The Who in 2002, but didn't like Zak at all.

Since Keith died, Pete is always bad-mouthing Keith Moon, so maybe he wanted someone with no similarities?

Townsend being tacky. The dead should be left in peace. But, hey, that’s our Pete. :)

While watching a documentary on the early LA/San Fran thrash scene, several bands, including Exodus and Death Angel, claimed Mustaine was the guy that inspired them all to rethink their approach to metal when they heard what he was writing and playing. Many consider him to be the Godfather of modern thrash. Metallica was basically a cover band before Dave showed up.

It still bugs me.. Supposedly, Stevie gave the band an ultimatum. "Me or him" because Lindsey SMIRKED during a speech. Big deal.. Fleetwood Mac actually wanted him, not her, but he was a good boyfriend and musical partner, and said "We're a packaged deal". And it wasn't like Stevie had anywhere to go if Lindsey would have thought only of himself, and possibly missing out on a once in a lifetime opportunity - Buckingham/Nicks bombed (despite having three really good songs).. Even when they were in the band, he arranged all her songs, would transpose a 10 second thing she played on the piano, and make a song out of it, "Rhiannon" for example.

Stevie also said she was against making new albums because "Touring is where the money is at".... How much is enough? She has no kids, she's old and could never spend it all, anyway.

Meanwhile, shortly after getting fired, Lindsey had to get heart surgery.

Yeah, I'm a huge Buckingham fan and am in a Facebook group for his fans so heard all about everything. I can't even listen to Fleetwood Mac anymore or anything that has Nicks singing on it. The sound of her voice makes me so angry.

Buckingham was planning on releasing an album and touring this year, but obviously Covid put a stop to that. Fingers crossed for next year.

Occasionally, the stars align, and a subject emerges that Vicky and I agree on 100%...
