It's actually only been out for a few weeks, as a VOD rental. Maybe I'll nominate it for something next year when it's more widely available and on more streaming services, assuming there's the right group of people for it. I don't imagine it's going to have mass appeal.

If worst comes to worst, I guess I could always just shuffle my DVDs and pick something at random to nominate, but I picked up a lot of trash when the local HMV went out of business a couple years ago, so I don't think anyone wants me going with that option haha.

So those four films were a bust. One was a film I didn't really like that much the first time I saw it, but I wanted to like it more, if that makes sense. I was hoping a rewatch would make it click like Blue Ruin did, but that wasn't the case. Maybe if I come back to it in a few more years, the third time will be the charm haha.

Good Lord there has to be something. I can always nominate something for you lol.
I've been completely opposite of that. I have at least 10 films I want to nominate in a Hall someday and just picking between the 10 is tough. I went pretty lighthearted this time and picked something that I normally wouldn't for a general.

Yeah, I don't know what happens to my brain when it comes time to decide on a nomination, since even films I previously liked don't seem to impress me much. It often makes me wonder if I even like movies any more. But then once the HoF starts, I usually enjoy most of the films so I know that's not the case.

Which reminds me that one of the films I have on my profile keeps disappearing for some reason (this is the third time), and now I can't remember what I had there. It was the first thing I thought of and made sure it wasn't in any other HOF. It is completely me, to someone who really knows me. Its a beautiful film but a hard pill to swallow. And the director, it is his first film. It has amazing actors as well.

You have seen a french director's American films... I'm sure you have seen "Fahrenheit 451" (Truffaut) and "Pretty Baby" (Malle).
Sorry I should say English speaking films.

Is that a subtle hint that I should just nominate one of my favourite films? haha
I always do.
Usually I just bring up my top 100 and pick one of them. The film I picked this time isn’t on that list, but if I ever make another one it will be.
Yep, I pick a favorite too. It’s more my “top 150” actually, but this time it was something in my 100.

Sorry I should say English speaking films.I've seen both of those. Pretty Baby was pahaK's nom for the 21st. It finished last, but I really liked it. We had another Truffaut film, Day For Night (La nuit américaine) in the 17th HoF. It didn't do well either, but it was one of my favorites in that HoF.

I think I've barely scratched the surface of any one specific French Director and would love to delve deeper into Jean Renoir. I discovered him along with the actor Jean Gabin at the same time and would LOVE to see more of him, as well.

1st Psycho
3rd The 400 Blows
7th The Shawshank Redemption
13th Dances with Wolves
17th The Innocents
19th Pulp Fiction
21st Jagten (The Hunt - of course, I was the one who recommended it to neiba)
2nd Inglorious Bastards
With the generals I've joined in I've really enjoyed or flat out love:
12th Casablanca
13th Dances With Wolves
15th The Station Agent
17th The Innocents
18th Road To Perdition (which also doubled as the first time a nom of mine placed first in a Generals HoF)
19th Pulp Fiction
20th Phantom Thread
21st The Hunt
22nd Inglorious Basterds
With choosing noms, I've done a lot of times with favorites or older favorites I haven't seen in far too long and I've only picked two of my top ten as noms.
I have also came across some great Blind Grabs of unknowns and a few Must Sees.
As far as Cosmic's Top Nine, I've seen them all and love 'em all with The Re-Animator being one I haven't seen in a few decades and should see again.
I picked a favourite of mine.
All of the ones that I considered are in my top 20

I could never put together a top 100 film list. It's too hard when you have seen as many I have in my "slightly over a half-century". My parents loved cinema. I grew up watching movies all the time. I can say my HOF choice would be in that top 100 because it is memorable but where it would fit would be hard to say. My top 10 here isn't really my top 10 films of all time, they are just films I enjoy.

Same! Also, since my favourite films are not necessarily the ones I think are technically the best, I wouldn't know how to approach ranking them. Should you put a perfectly executed film you like a little less above or below one you enjoy more despite its many flaws?
I'd find it hard enough to make a genre-specific list, let alone one for what I consider to be the all-time best, or my absolute favourites. I have a hard enough time ranking the HoF nominations haha.

Should you put a perfectly executed film you like a little less above or below one you enjoy more despite its many flaws?
I always consider personal enjoyment above all else when ranking any list - that goes for favorites lists, countdowns, and the Hall of Fame.
As to not being able to remember favorites, I don't really have that issue. If I love a movie enough to to call it a favorite, then I buy it on bluray or DVD so I just look through my collection and choose from that.
I use icheckmovies.com to keep a log of the filmes I watched and favourited. Besides, I have my own Top100 done there also, so it's easy to find favourites or to find good nominations to these HoFs.
Regarding the making of a Top 100, my personal preference comes before the inherent value of a film. And while I see why people struggle to order a Top 100, I never find it problematic at all. I just admit from the starting point that the order is not definite and just go film to film. There are definitely entire bits of my Top that I have ordered, like my top 12 are definitely better than the 15 after and so on.

That'll make a great wake up moment - THANKS
And with Top 100 Lists, it would be impossible for me as well. When I was a little kid I did have a notebook with every film I ever watched until I was around 13 when it dawned on me that with films on TV that are edited for time and content there were films I technically did not see, so I stopped.
Now, I have seriously considered a 100 Countless Rewatches List, though the only way I could do it would be alphabetical.

I might actually have a nomination! It's not any of the ones I've watched over the last few days, and I didn't even have it on my "to watch" list for the rest of the week. The idea just suddenly came to me, so I'm going to rewatch it now since I only saw it when it was in theatres.
I sent MV a PM to check it's availability on streaming sites in the US since it's a newer film than what I'd typically go with. I imagine it should be pretty easy to find by now though.
I'll probably rewatch a potential nomination today (my list of possible noms has grown from one to three during the last couple of days).
It must be lucky to only have one film to suggest for nomination my shortlist right now...
Black Narcissus (Powell, Pressburger)
Jane Eyre (Robert Stevenson)
Shadow of a Doubt (Alfred Hitchcock)
The Abominable Snowman (Val Guest)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Don Siegel)
The Bat (Crane Wilbur)
Divorce Italian Style (Pietro Germi)
The Great Love (Pierre Etaix)

Macbeth (Roman Polanski)

Raiders of the Lost Ark (Steven Spielberg)

This is an interesting group of nominations. I don't remember a lot about most of the films I've already seen, so they're definitely due to be revisited. Well, one of them I hoped never to have to suffer through again, and if it's not at the very bottom of my list I'll be incredibly surprised.
Christiane F. - Unless I'm getting this mixed up with a different film, it has some pretty uncomfortable content featuring minors and drug use. I don't remember very much of it, though I think it had a great soundtrack.
The Fisher King - This is the one Terry Gilliam film I haven't seen yet, so I guess I'll finally be completing his filmography. Gilliam's work can be rather hit or miss, but I'm definitely looking forward to it!
Gangs of New York - I hated every single thing about this film. I only watched it because it was required for a film class. I could only watch it in 15 minute chunks before turning it off for awhile. Seeing it nominated here has completely soured my mood.
The Great Mouse Detective - I know I saw this when I was a kid, but don't honestly don't remember much about it.
Hunger - I've been meaning to watch this, but haven't gotten around to it. My room mate didn't like it, but we don't exactly have the same taste in film.
Jojo Rabbit - This was my second favourite film of last year.
Late Spring - I keep seeing this film come up in different places, but I haven't bothered to check it out.
The Reflecting Skin - I don't think I've ever heard of this, and the poster doesn't exactly give me much to go by.
Schindler's List - We watched this in school when I was fairly young, so I only really remember the broad strokes, and none of the details.
The Skin I Live In - I know I've seen part of this, but I don't know if I've seen the entire thing or not.
Stand By Me - Here's another film I saw when I was young, that I remember very little about. That's kind of the theme of this HoF for me haha.

I have not seen Gangs of New York, Fisher King, Hunger, or Reflecting Skin. I have interest in all of them and I almost watched Reflecting Skin a few days ago. Of the remaining 6, there's only 1 I didn't like but I'm hopeful for a better result this time.
I won’t even try to guess :)
I’ve seen four of these, and like all four. I watched one of them (not my own) very recently, and the other three in 2020, so I’ll see if I get around to rewatching them.

Gangs of New York - I hated every single thing about this film. I only watched it because it was required for a film class. I could only watch it in 15 minute chunks before turning it off for awhile. Seeing it nominated here has completely soured my mood.
Haha glad I’m not the only one.
I have yet to have a necessity for seeing this so I have yet to finish it. I think I’ve tried to watch it like 4 times or something like that. Never got through it. I don’t like it at all. If I didn’t have a proper reason for not joining I have now. :D

This might help some of you with the guessing, since most of you are wrong.
I’ve previously seen seven of these.
Christiane F. - I had never even heard of this before it arrived in my inbox. This looks really grim and dirty.
The Fisher King - I’ve never seen this and comedies are often misses for me. It does have a good cast though so here’s hoping it’s an exception.
Gangs of New York - I see a few people guessing this was mine, but I actually didn’t like it the one time I saw it. I assume people are guessing me because of Leo? Or maybe because I was considering a Scorsese? I almost nommed a Scorsese but changed my mind when this got picked.
The Great Mouse Detective - I watched this once before (maybe for a movie tournament?) but didn’t like it. Maybe if I’d grown up with it I would’ve had a better experience, but it didn’t have nostalgia on its side.
Hunger - It looks like it could be good. I know a lot of people praise Fassbender and I think he’s a solid actor but he’s never blown me away. Maybe this will change that.
Jojo Rabbit - I watched this crazy ass movie a couple of months ago and thought it was very good, but didn’t love it. Maybe I’ll love it this time.
Late Spring - I watched this for a previous Hall of Fame and found it boring and thought the main character was annoying. I don’t expect that to change.
The Reflecting Skin - I typically only like vampire movies when they’re super homo-erotic and star Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and Antonio Banderas so I don’t have high hopes for this.
Schindler's List - I love this movie. I think it’s absolutely essential viewing. However, it’s a really, really tough watch and it’s very long so I can’t say I’m really looking forward to seeing it again.
The Skin I Live In - I watched this for the Horror countdown and loved it. It’s super twisted and Banderas looks great in it. :randy:
Stand By Me - I don’t know if I ever saw this as a kid but I watched it several years ago and it just didn’t really resonate with me. I hope that changes this time around.

Jojo Rabbit (2019)
Directed By: Taika Waititi
Starring: Roman Griffin Davis, Thomasin McKenzie, Taika Waititi
Jojo Rabbit is an anti-fascist satire that may initially come across as somewhat insensitive to some viewers, due to its outrageous handling of otherwise serious subject matter. Instead of presenting a simple critique, the film frames hatred in an absurd manner in order to highlight how ridiculous concepts like white supremacy truly are. It pushes the boundaries of what is acceptable, while maintaining a balance between its comedic and more tragic elements. It'll likely be a divisive film, but I think its core message is an important one to share, especially with the unfortunate resurgence and growing popularity of hate groups around the world.
Casting primarily British and American actors to speak in German accents works surprisingly well with the tone of the film. Their varying degrees of exaggeration suit each individual character almost perfectly. Of course the pièce de résistance is having an indigenous Polynesian with Jewish heritage playing Hitler himself. One of my other favourite choices was the clever use of Stephen Merchant's natural height. He's almost a entire foot taller than Sam Rockwell, but the difference in their stature is enhanced even further in certain shots so that Merchant looms overhead. He's both comical and menacing at the same time.
The performances are great, especially from newcomers Roman Griffin Davis and Archie Yates. Throughout the film there is a lot of great comedy in single lines of dialogue, with Jojo's friend Yorki having some particularly memorable ones. During my second viewing, I laughed at all the same things I did when I first saw it in the theatre, so I was glad that those parts held up for me. Jojo Rabbit is not all laughs however, as it does contain some genuinely heart-warming scenes, as well as occasional bouts of weightier content. It's a strange mix that isn't going to appeal to everyone, but I enjoy the film quite a bit and I hope no one is outright offended by it.

Date Watched: 08/08/2020
Cinema or Home: Home
Reason For Watching: The 23rd MoFo Hall of Fame, nominated by cricket
Rewatch: No
Christiane F is the tale of a young life almost wasted, thrown away to drugs and prostitution on Berlin's streets. It's a premise that is not all unique, but it is shockingly and heartbreakingly authentic.
The film glamorizes nothing. It also never stands in judgement of its characters and never comes across as preachy. It feels very raw and very real and it owes much of this credibility to the two lead actors, both of whom turn in remarkably convincing performances - especially considering that they were only teenagers when the film was released.
It's an impressive film and one I may well watch again. Sadly, with a HOF that is populated by so many strong contenders I don't think it's likely to rank very high in the voting. Still, I'm very glad to have been introduced to it.

The Fisher King
(Terry Gilliam, 1991)
Nominated By: edarsenal I was originally going to go with The Rum Diary (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0376136/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0) after a recent rewatch on Netflix until the recent conversation on the Fantasy HoF sprung this one to mind that I haven't seen in over a decade and it felt like a more ideal nomination for a General HoF.
Gangs of New York
(Martin Scorsese, 2002)
Nominated By: neiba I think I'm on a complete 180 with Cosmic when it comes to this film. Always love watching it and I've been dying to recently, so -- YAY
The Great Mouse Detective
(Ron Clements, Burny Mattinson, David Michener, and John Musker, 1986)

Banshun (Late Spring)
(Yasujirô Ozu, 1949)

Le Samouraï
(Jean-Pierre Melville, 1967)

The Reflecting Skin
(Philip Ridley, 1990)
Nominated By: pahaK A vampire flick a la pahaK??? I am very curious.
Schindler's List
(Steven Spielberg, 1993)
Nominated By: Citizen Rules A Must See! film I have always shied away from knowing how emotional of a film it is but I do believe it's time has come to experience and, most likely, applaud this film.
La piel que habito (The Skin I Live In)
(Pedro Almodóvar, 2011)
Nominated By: Miss Vicky From the first time this film came out I have been equally disturbed and attracted by the notion of seeing it.
And now. . . oh my ::wolf smile::
Stand By Me
(Rob Reiner, 1986)
Nominated By: Sarge I've enjoyed this in my youth and a recent rewatch for a recent HoF that I'm unsure of, I was a little lukewarm with it so I'll see if I'm back to enjoying it as I once did.
And now, the TRUE dilemma --- WHICH ONE do I start with!!!

Do you want Spaulding's quote of your previous review counted as your write-up for Christiane F or do you want to post something else for it?

Thanks!
I'm excited to check out your nomination as well. I'm actually going to find a copy now. I'm also pretty interested in Reflecting Skin now that I know Viggo Mortensen is in it. I'll probably watch one of those tonight if I'm able to.
If you, or anyone has trouble, I do have a very good link for it.
And I feel the same regarding Reflecting and Viggo as well.

Seen 5 of the 12. This will be quite interesting. I see 2 films contending for the top to start things off but we will see how it shakes out.
I agree with Ed, tough to know where to start lol.

Stand by Me holds up amazingly well for me. Watched it 2 years ago.
Schindlers List is such a great film, as well.
Seen 7 out of 12, this has to be the General HoF with most rewatches I was ever in.
Christiane F. - Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo: Never even heard of it, but historically I love cricket's noms so I'm looking forward!
The Fisher King: Never heard of it.
Gangs of New York: This was a huge favourite of mine when I was a kid and I was looking for a reason to rewatch it so I picked it. The fact that cricket had never seen it also helped the choice because I was actually trying to decide between this and another film nominated here.
The Great Mouse Detective: I think I've read the book of this story when I was a kid and might have watched the film but remember absolutely nothing about it, so this counts as a new watch.
Hunger: Also never heard of it.
Jojo Rabbit: Watched it quite recently, kind of liked it, won't have to rewatch.
Banshun: I watched this one for a HoF, I think, and really didn't like it. But I'm more mature now so I'll gladly give it another chance.
Le Samouraï: Amazing film! I am pretty sure it made my list to the 60s Countdown.
The Reflecting Skin: Never heard of it.
Schindler's List: A classic that I always found a tad overrated. It's still a very good movie though.
La piel que habito (The Skin I Live In): This was the film I almost picked instead of my own nom. Terrific film, easily Top 5 by Almodovar. The only reason for which I am not looking forward to rewatch it is that I watched this with my ex-gf so I'm not sure how I'll react to it now.
Stand By Me: One of those wholesome films! Great choice.
Seems like we're in to a hell of an HoF! Well done everybody.

The one movie I know I won't be rewatching, as I saw it just in July...

Schindler's List (1993)
The "war" or "historical tragedy" film is probably rarely seen in an optimistic light; Come and See is maybe the most brutal film I've seen. Apocalypse Now and Platoon have nothing good to say about humanity. Dr. Strangelove and Paths of Glory criticize authority and morality in war.
In 99/100 of these cases, the darkness and pessimism is absolutely needed. War is indeed hell, and many many terrible tragedies have happened on this Earth. They deserve to be told, and told with respect and accuracy. Humanity can do such awful things...
But once in a while there comes a story that really does seem too good to be true. A tale of a shining beacon of light in a time of despair and darkness. An entirely accurate movie that may come across as more sentimental than more brutal and angry films. But that's just because we're surprised, that of all the rotten and despicable acts during the Holocaust and other tragedies, there was perhaps one act in there that forged forward and reminded us that it's not just in fairy tales; evil really sometimes can be conquered by good.
Schindler's List tells one such story. It is about the horrors of the Holocaust, and about a time in history we should never forget. But it's also about a man who redeemed himself in the midst of this evil, and risked his life and status to save hundreds of people. It is true that 1200 people is nothing compared to the millions of Jews that died. But asking the people who survived because of Schindler - their children, and their children - might make one realize that life is so fragile. It's not about the numbers or the percent. It's about each and every person who is living and breathing today due to Schindler's protection.
The film is over three hours, but it never feels slow or draggy. Instead, Spielberg takes advantage of his running time and not only shows ghetto and concentration camp life, but develops strong and believable characters - especially Schindler and Goeth. They were people in real life, and they feel like real people in this film.
The black and white was a fantastic idea; It's commonly said that black and white can help bring more realism than color might be able to. While I don't agree with that statement all the time, films like Raging Bull and Schindler's List prove this often very much true. AT times, we almost feel like we're watching old documentary footage of the Holocaust. Spielberg utilizes shaky camera in a way that's effective but not distracting. You are truly inside the world of this terrifying place.
While I am by no means the first one singing the praises of Schindler's List, it's also a story that doesn't - and can't - get old. To forget the events of what happened in the Holocaust, and the events that happened in this film, is to disrespect every person who died. There aren't words to describe; no film can really describe it. Again, I'm simply repeating words hundreds and thousands have said. But after watching Schindler's List, I am reminded again of the importance of remembering, the importance of caring, the importance of living with a purpose.

One of the biggest strengths of this movie is the cast. They are all unknown non-professional actors, most of whom have done nothing else since. Without "stars", the authenticity smacks you across the head as you forget you are watching a movie. Because of the structure, it doesn't even seem like a documentary, but rather it seems as if you are watching a piece of somebody's life as it happens. Everyone in the cast is so natural and perfect. Even people who would normally be called extras, they are just people that happen to be caught on film. There's a scene late in the movie when the camera catches the faces of many down on their luck lost souls. These are real people who don't know they're in a film and the effect is bone crushing. The only known name in the movie is David Bowie. He doesn't act, but he contributes to the soundtrack and there's a scene that features one of his performances. The movie is filmed and set in Berlin, but his performance was in New York. They spliced that performance with the crowd at an AC/DC concert in Berlin to make it look like the same concert. They used David Bowie to market the film in America and that is a damn shame.
It is a heartbreaking true story that's all the more heartbreaking because of how many true stories it actually is. It didn't make me feel like I felt when watching other upsetting but fictional stories that I've nominated in the past. My wife and I lost one of the most important people in our lives 13 years ago to addiction. This is a story that really hurts me. When Christiane first decided she want to try "H", my reaction was please no. From that point on it's one unbearably painful scene right after another. There have been many good to great films about addiction but this one blows them all away. It's tough to watch but it needs to be seen. One of the most upsetting things about this movie is the fact that it's 39 years old and nothing has changed. We have to do something to help these poor people and I'm in tears writing this.
