View Full Version : A Song For July
Chypmunk
06-28-20, 05:18 AM
Same as was done in April and last year.....
Join in and drop out as you please
No set number of nominations, nominate on the fly
Max song duration: 10 minutes
No individual matches means no random or host 'fixing' the matches
Only one nomination per person per 'round'
Only those with songs nominated in any 'round' are eligible to vote; except the 'Final' where all those that have previously nominated a song in the month may vote should they wish
Every couple of days will be a new 'round' where any and all newly nominated songs are up against each other. As soon as voting starts for one 'round' nominations will be accepted for the next 'round'.
Players vote by ranking all the songs in that 'round' from 1 (their favourite) to n (their least favourite). Songs will be awarded points based on their positional ranking in each vote (number of points will depend on the number of songs contesting the 'round' - if 10 songs #1 song would get 10 points, #10 song would get 1 point).
The winning song from each 'round' (or songs in the case of a tie) goes through to the 'Final' at the end of the month.
Songs that made it to previous 'finals' are ineligible - 13th Chime - Cats Of Toulouse

Welcome in HollowMan,
External linking is easy:
Copy the url of the song link you want (it has to be a free to access link - most of the time we tend to use YouTube)
Type the text of the song or whatever in a response ... i.e. "The Beatles - In My Life"
Highlight the text
In the list of optional actions at the top of the response box (where italics, bold, underline etc. are) click the picture of a globe with 2 links of a chain underneath it
In the box that comes up paste the url you copied earlier
Edit the "www" in the link to "m"
Click ok and it will wrap the HTML for the link around the text and that's it
You can verify it looks right and even that they work by previewing the post.
For example here's the one for The Beatles - In My Life (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqpysaAo4BQ)

Thanks, however I don't see the symbol of the globe with chain underneath. The only symbols I have are smiley face, bold, italic, a person, warning, speech marks and the picture one. I'm using a tablet if that makes any difference.

Ah, I'm on a Mac and get this:

Do you get a "Go Advanced" button like the one you can see at the bottom of my screenshot? Perhaps the globe with chain underneath might be in there for you?
If not perhaps someone else that uses a tablet might be able to assist?

No worries - I'll message Yoda about this when he's back fit and able but for the time being just drop the ordinary video link for each round you want to play into this thread and I'll format the links for you when I'm collating the songs for the rounds.

As far as I remember, it was always impossible to do the "m." thing on mobile. Even writing it correctly would bring up the entire youtube clip. It's a desktop thing only.
Edit: I see you're on a mac. Ops, no experience with those...

Round 1
1. Cody Jinks - Watch the World Die
(Apocalyptic country. Timely lyrics.)
2. George Jones - The King is Gone
(No song with "Yabba Dabba Doo" in its chorus should be this good.)
3. Cerrone - Supernature
(One of the YouTube comments summed it up perfectly: "If disco and porno music had a baby." First-time listen. Great nom.)
4. Rush - Big Money
(Strongly tempted to rank this dead last for that dorky ass music video. Gotta remind myself to judge the song on its own merits.)
5. Saving Escape - Rhyme or Reason
(Comfortable, if perhaps overly familiar sound. I'm always partial to female-fronted rock, and the song builds nicely.)
6. American - Sister Golden Hair
(Beautiful, breezy harmonies. Perfect song to play outside on a warm summer day.)
7. Toothless - Sisyphus
(Pleasant, upbeat, if a tad monotonous.)
8. The Alan Parson Project - Sirius
(I wondered why this sounded so immediately familiar. Thankfully the YouTube comments pointed out the reason: Jordan-era Chicago Bulls introductions. Wish this was 2-3 minutes longer.)
9. The Beatles - In My Life
(Simplistic perfection, but I respect the Beatles more than I enjoy listening to them.)
10. Hell on Wheels - The Soda
(A little too indie-sounding for me, though it did grow on me.)
11. Depeche Mode - Little 15
(Never been a fan of Depeche Mode. Their sound just always bums me out.)
12. Journey - I'll Be Alright Without You
(I love a lot of Journey songs, mostly for Steve Perry's soaring vocal abilities, but this one has never done it for me.)
13. Neil Diamond - Hurricane
(Don't hate it, but it definitely makes me think of elevator music.)
14. No Buses - With or Without You
(Grating.)

Round 2 nom:
Apocalyptica feat. Brent Smith - Not Strong Enough (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AlZuqUTgcss)
1 Rush - The Big Money - One of the best Rush tunes from the 80's synth era...
2 Cerrone - Supernature - DAT FUNK! Love the trance-y synth lines.
3 Saving Escape - Rhyme or Reason - Kid has some pipes!
4 Alan Parsons Project - Sirius - Classic APP tune...too bad it isn't longer.
5 Beatles-In my Life - Good tune, but not a favorite from the band.
6 Toothless - Sisyphus - Good energy.
7 Cody Jinks - Watch The World Die - A country song I actually like!
8 America - Sister Golden Hair - Fairly good classic rock, but doesn't do much for me.
9 Depeche Mode - Little 15 - I like quite of bit of DM music. But not this one.
10 Journey - I'll Be Alright Without You - One of the few duds from this band that is somehow still popular.
11 Hell On Wheels - The Soda - Got better as it went along, but a bit too stripped down for my taste.
12 No Buses - With or Without It - What did I just watch?
13 Neil Diamond - Hurricane - One of the few Diamond tracks I just don't dig.
14 George Jones-The King Is Gone - Nope!

No contest. This has been a fav of mine since I was a kid, complete with its freaky album cover and music video
2. The Alan Parsons Project - Sirius
Love me some APP. Sirius is a classic.
3.The Beatles - In My Life
Great song. Kind of sad, though. Like the kind of song you play at someone's funeral.
4. Toothless - Sisyphus
5. Hell on Wheels - The Soda
Sweden's Violent Femmes, I guess. The first band my boyfriend ever worked for.
Kind of heartbreaking lyrics though.
And I will take that dollar bill
And I will drink so much
That it could kill me
Because it's sin
Because it's my nature
Then we bounce into the water
And we bounce into the soda
And we bounce into the whiskey
And we bounce...

Round 2
1. Rodriguez - Hate Street Dialogue
(I've listened to this album a ton ever since watching the excellent documentary Searching for Sugar Man a few weeks back. Incredible story of a transcendent talent who was completely ignored in his own country but unbeknownst to him was a revolutionary artist half the world away.)
2. Prince - Purple Rain
(One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite artists from one of my favorite albums. Might dock it a few points for being such an OBVIOUS song, depending on how the rest of this set shakes out, but in reality this would be my #1.)
3. Luke Bell - The Bullfighter
(Sounds like he was transplanted from a 1950's roadside honky-tonk bar.)
4. Raskolnikov - Hunde sind an der Leine zu führen
(I dig its murkiness and low-driving energy. The tunnel imagery in the video fits the sound quite well.)
5. Vintersea - Illuminated
(Tough one to rank. Wasn't really feeling it early on and its length was a turn-off, but I was pleasantly caught off guard when the demon vocals materialized after the solo. Even though I don't love the song as a whole, I loved enough little moments throughout it that I'd be down to sample a few more songs from this band.)
6. Nadine Shah - Fool
(Original link was unavailable, so I went with this alternative (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YIfXCYdYsH0).)
7. The Pretenders - Don't Get Me Wrong
(I wish I liked The Pretenders more than I do. As with most of their stuff, this falls under the less-than-enthusiastic "alright" category.)
8. Apocalyptica ft. Brent Smith - Not Strong Enough
(I don't think the vocals mesh too well with the gothic styling, but I can rock this no problem.)
9. FINNEAS - I Lost a Friend
(Not my thing, but listenable.)
10. The Very Unknown Band - The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet
(Just because it's mysterious doesn't make it good.)
11. Trace Adkins - The Rest of Mine
(At least it's not "Honkytonk Badonkadonk.")
12. Morbid Angel - Angel of Disease
(Sounds like they're mangling their own instruments beyond recognition.)

1. Prince & The Revolution - Purple Rain
- Prince is undeniable. "Purple Rain" is undeniable. If you are ever sad, about anything, just turn on "Purple Rain" and yell the chorus even if the rest of the song doesn't have anything to do with your problems.
2. Morbid Angel - Angel of Disease
- When the good captain said these dudes sound like they are mangling their own instruments beyond recognition, something I do probably too often fyi, he wasn't kidding. I think it sounds dope. It's very aggressive and just feels good, like a warm gun.
3. Luke Bell - The Bullfighter
- It's refreshing to hear newer music that sounds like it's from another time without losing any authenticity.
4. Rodriquez - Hate Street Dialogue
- Not having seen the Sugar Man doc or having listened to any of his music before, I don't know exactly what I expected. Maybe a folksier tune, but I'm really digging this song.
5. Raskolnikov - Hunde sind an der Leine zu führen
- I like that they are doing a Joy Division thing.
6. Trace Adkins - The Rest Of Mine
- Right in the middle for me. Bonus points for being country, but it's pretty sanitized stuff. Not bad, never will be a favorite.
7. The Pretenders - Don't Get Me Wrong
- I am mostly neutral on this track. It's not good or bad. By the middle of it, I kinda zoned out. By the end of it, I kinda remembered what I was supposed to be doing, and I didn't hate it.
8. The Most Mysterious Song On The Internet - The Very Unknown Band
9. Vintersea - Illuminated
- I don't hate it or anything, but I am not moved by it in the slightest. I don't know what to make of this kind of music. And this song is pretty long, and I'm still not too keen on the growly, screamy stuff, at least in this context.
10. Nadine Shah - Fool
- Maybe I'm just in a sour mood, but this was pretty grating.
11. Apocalyptica feat. Brent Smith - Not Strong Enough
- I am getting Chris Gaines vibes the dudes, but I probably shouldn't judge the song on that. It's not really my thing.
12. FINNEAS - I Lost A Friend
- I was out as soon as he said he lost a friend like keys in the sofa.

Round 3
1. Colter Wall - Caroline
(Brock Lesnar of all people brought Colter Wall to my attention. A sound as sparse as the open plains. Unfathomable to me that he was 20-years-old at the time of this recording. He sounds more like an ancient, weathered horseman returning home from decades of toil and trouble.)
2. Anthrax & Public Enemy - Bring the Noise
(This is my "Walk This Way" barrier-breaker/genre cross-over. TURN IT UP!)
3. Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy Man
(If all goes as planned, I'll be taking my first mushroom trip in a few weeks. Part of me would love to play this while tripping, as it's got that meditative/third-eye quality, but I worry that its sinister undertone might unnerve me too much.)
4. Naneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance
(Charmingly dated and very fun.)
5. Prince - I Wanna Be Your Lover
(Pure sex. It's still strange to me that Prince's music is so easily found on YouTube, when his team used to constantly shut this sh*t down when he was still alive.)
6. Long Night - Barren Land
(Feel like I can hear slight echoes of simplified Tool in there during a few moments, which is a favorable comparison. Lyrics are overly repetitive. Like it, don't love it.)
7. Medicine Boy - Alina
(Didn't grab me on a first listen, and I'm rarely into whispered vocals, but I appreciate its haunting quality.)
8. Brad Paisley - Me Neither
(Still think I prefer him when he's selling insurance with Peyton Manning, but I like Paisley more than many of his mainstream contemporaries, and he's always been skilled with a guitar.)

Let's hope so, since your link won't work for me and I'm not seeing any other options. Perhaps pahaK can speak on it since he's familiar with the artist.

I like a few Behemoth songs, but this side project of demonically possessed outlaw country is much more my thing.

Yeah, the alternate link is fine. It's really weird that both of the linked versions are on the same official channel, but they're geoblocked differently

For me, it's the opposite, I like Behemoth (at least the albums they've done since Nergal's recovery) while the side project isn't exactly my thing but they have some cool songs.

1. Colter Wall - Caroline
- Colter Wall is one of a kind.
2. Prince - I Wanna Be Your Lover
- Sex is a nasty, shameful, embarrassing, awkward, messy, improper thing, but Prince makes it sound fun.
3. Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance
- I like the rapping and electro/dance portions more than the chorus and singy stuff. This song is kind of an epic in the way it moves from delivery style to delivery style, the argument against it would be the music perhaps doesn't change enough. I'm very into this track, will listen again.
4. Anthrax & Public Enemy - Bring the Noise
- I don't love Public Enemy, but this track is high energy and fun enough.
5. Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy Man
- I've never been much into Donovan, but it's not a bad song or anything. Musically it's pretty interesting. Donovan's delivery is suitable for the music. Maybe I'll do some shrooms with Spaulding and like it more.
6. Medicine Boy - Alina
- Spooky and decent.
7. Long Night - Barren Land
- Not bad, but unlikely to ever make my rotation.
8. Brad Paisley - Me Neither
- This is rather inoffensive I suppose. There are Paisley songs I like a lot less. His guitar was getting after it well enough too. I could see Paisley fans really enjoying this live.
9. Bring Me The Horizon - Parasite Eve
- I'm probably not the audience for these fellas.

Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy Man
There's just something about this song. I'm not even a big Donovan fan, but...it's that sinister turn...it's been on my mind for a few months now.
Medicine Boy - Alina
Pretty cool.
Long Night - Barren Land
Oooh I quite like this.
Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance
Yaaas!!!
Prince - I Wanna Be Your Lover
This was quite fun. I've never heard this before (not a Prince fan, except for When Doves Cry).
Colter Wall - Caroline
Bring Me The Horizon - Parasite Eve
Anthrax & Public Enemy - Bring the Noise
Brad Paisley - Me Neither

Round 3
RIGHT?

A warm welcome back to HashtagBrownies, resopamenic and Sedai while honeykid joins in for the first time this go around
Thanks to pahaK for noting Derek's choice had already won a round in a previous tournament ..... please do remember folks that if a track is on that collapsible list in the OP as the winner of a round in a previous tournament it's no longer eligible for future tournaments and as I only check when physically creating each round it would sadly be too late for any replacement at that point.

I only really know his16HP and Woven Hand output but love both of those so thus far I'd certainly agree.
You really ought to join one of these sometime, would love to listen to a few nominations from you as we also share a liking for the likes of Beach House too so there's a good chance you'd nominate something I'd like that might be new to me.
Black Soul Choir was cat's nom btw.

Good idea. Usually busy but I bet I can do a couple. Please PM/ping me when another starts up and I'll see. :)
Aha, that's the beauty of this new format, people can drop in/out as they see fit so being involved for the entire tournament or just a round here and there are totally optional.
As far as joining in goes ... rounds last two days and whenever one round is being voted on nominations for the next round are being taken, so whenever one of my tournaments is ongoing you can pretty much post a nom and join the next round at any point.
This tournament will go on until the Final at the end of the month and then I like to give it a couple of months between tournaments (so they hopefully don't get stale) meaning the next one will probably be in October or November. You're more than welcome to join in a few rounds of this one if you like or I can certainly @ you for the next one if you prefer.
1. In Flames - Fear is the Weakness - Band has been around for along time. I picked a somewhat newer tune this time around. A far cry from their death metal roots, but I still like this tune a whole lot. Guitar part is fun to play.
2. Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy - Classic tune! I love this one.
3. Dark Funeral - Unchain My Soul - Excellent black metal.
4. Catatonia - Dead From The Waist Down - I had not heard this before; good stuff!
5. Metallica - Nothing Else Matters - Still pretty sick of this tune, but it's still good enough to place fairly high on my list.
6. L'Arc~en~Ciel - Kasou - Good separation on the instruments production-wise.
7. Girls aloud - The Promise - Cool video, and pretty good song
8. Me and That Man - Man of the Cross § (alt link if needed)

Round 4
Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy - I love this song. It's something I've nominated before and am happy to put it at the top of my list.
Catatonia - Dead From The Waist Down - I'd completely forgotten about this song until about 4 days again when I saw it on a music channel and it's been on my mind ever since. Just something of the lullaby about it which I find so appealing when sung in Cerys' voice.
Girls aloud - The Promise - Those of you who've played these tournaments with me before will probably be aware of how much I love a good pop song. I only really got back into music in the last few years and finding a couple of gems by this band has been one of the good things about it. Especially as my dislike of all things Cheryl would've barred me from enjoying it otherwise. :D
Billy Fury - Somebody Else's Girl - Billy was probably my mum's favourite way back when, so I've heard more than a few of his hits. It's a short, easy listen and the nostalgia will probably help this towards the top of my list.
Metallica - Nothing Else Matters - Great song. Not sure how I'll place it today due to it being nominated so often.
L'Arc~en~Ciel - Kasou - I don't really know what I think about this. It's quite pleasant though.
Victoria Shaw - Don't Move - Schmaltzy, but I was choosing pics of Tara Palmer-Tomkinson for a post elsewhere while it played and it fit quite well. :D
In Flames - Fear is the Weakness - I like the sound and the energy but there's little else there for me.
Mina - Il cielo in una stanza - This just isn't my thing.
16 Horsepower - Black Soul Choir - Another which is not unpleasant, just not something I'd choose to listen to. Thankfully short means it does better than those it's above in my list.
Me and That Man - Man of the Cross § (alt link if needed) - My first thought was "I wish he sang not." It's not enough to annoy me, but it's just kind of there and I'd rather it wasn't.
Dark Funeral - Unchain My Soul - It's loud. It's growly and it's there.
Bob Dylan - Abandoned Love - Oh, no. It's Bob :( I try and I try but I don't hear what everyone else seems to. Or maybe I do and I just don't like it.

1. Bob Dylan - Abandoned Love
- Hot take: Bob Dylan was really good at writing songs.
2. 16 Horsepower - Black Soul Choir
- I love the old school pre-country sounds mixed with that dark underbelly of underground country style and lyrics.
3. Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy
- Catchy af
4. Me and That Man - Man of the Cross
- Giving me some Slackeye Slim vibes. You know anything about Slackeye Slim Captain Spaulding?
5. Dark Funeral - Unchain My Soul
- Pretty wild. Completely ridiculous and over the top, but I'm here for it. It's got the most juice in this round
6. Metallica - Nothing Else Matters
- I like Metallica well enough, but I am over this song for the most part. It takes about five minutes to get interesting.
7. L'Arc~en~Ciel - Kasou
- Makes me think of what it would be like if you injured your brain and then listened to The Smiths or something. Heaven forbid I ever injure my brain, but if I do, I plan on testing this theory. That probably sounds derogatory, but it's not really supposed to be.
8. In Flames - Fear is the Weakness
- Started out kinda shaky for me, but I liked it as it picked up and got going.
9. Billy Fury - Somebody Else's Girl
- Sounds like a second-rate Elvis, which makes sense... cause that's what he was.
10. Victoria Shaw - Don't Move
- Not really my style, but it's not a terrible song.
11. Catatonia - Dead From The Waist Down
- 90s alt-rock just ain't for me. It's not like it's bad or anything, but I just have a hard time getting into it.
12. Mina - Il cielo in una stanza
- I prefer French music to Italian music I think.
13. Girls aloud - The Promise
- I don't care for this.

Round 4
1. Bob Dylan - Abandoned Love
(I know his voice is an acquired taste, but it's still disheartening to see the lack of respect Dylan gets in these tournaments. This is my first time ever hearing this song. Insane to think this didn't make the album cut.)
2. Me and That Man - Man of the Cross
(This side project definitely sounds like a bunch of metal dudes playing cowboy dress-up, and the songwriting leaves a lot to be desired at times, but the overall sound and aesthetic is very much in my wheelhouse. Country/folk with a dark, ominous pallor. A soundtrack for the undertaker.)
3. 16 Horsepower - Black Soul Choir
(Likely a major influence on many of the dark alt-country artists I love. I know I've heard this somewhere before, but I don't think I really took notice of it at the time.)
4. Dark Funeral - Unchain My Soul
(:devil::devil::devil:)
5. Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy
(As soon as this started, I was like, "Oh yeah, this is real 80's," not some retro emulation that is so popular nowadays.)
6. Metallica - Nothing Else Matters
(Undeniably great song, though it's certainly played out at this point -- both in real life and in these tournaments.)
7. Billy Fury - Somebody Else's Girl
(Definitely understand the "second-rate Elvis" comments, but it's a pleasant enough song.)
8. In Flames - Fear is the Weakness
(A welcome kick in the pants after a slow start to this round, though it sounds indistinguishable from a lot of of similar bands. Definitely welcome the energy, however.)
9. Mina - Il cielo in una stanza
(The unexpected sight of Matthew McConaughey at the beginning of the video made me LOL. Don't really know what to say about the music. It's pretty, but not something I'd listen to outside of a perfume commercial.)
10. L'Arc ~en ~ Ciel - Kasou
(The singing style always dooms this band for me every time they're nominated. Song itself seems to meander.)
11. Catatonia - Dead From the Waist Down
(Based on the name, I expected a metal song about impotence, so this was a sharp contrast. An annoying butterfly of a song. Really not feeling this round so far, although I'm only only four songs in at the moment.)
12. Victoria Shaw - Don't Move
(Talk about slamming on the brakes. Going from Dark Funeral to this nearly gave me whiplash.)
13. Girls Aloud - The Promise
(That was a long four minutes.)

Round 5
Deborah Harry - I Want That Man - Like my previous nomination this was something I'd forgotten about until recently. I didn't even know it was Ms. Harry. But I really like it and have been spending some time with it of late.
Stevie Wonder - Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer - If you're going to do Stevie, go 70's Stevie.
Pauline - Dancin' - Really enjoying this. A great start. Only the first song but I expect this to do well on my list.
Fanny - Blind Alley - I'm liking this too. It's got that late 60's/early 70's hippy rock feel which is always welcome with me.
Modern English - I Melt With You - ooh, now here's a blast from the past. The only negative about this song (and it's a minor thing which is my problem, not its) is that I just associate it with movie soundtracks and not the time itself, as I don't think it was that big a hit here.
Juice Leskinen Slam - Myrkytyksen oireet - I wasn't sure how I felt about this but by the end I'd started to quite like it.
Kid Rock - All Summer Long - I quite like it because I like Skynyrd so much. But that also pulls it down a little because I'd rather it was.
Die Krupps - Nazis Auf Speed - This isn't something I really listened to. It's more that I heard it and enjoyed it's noise and energy.
Elysian Fields - Hit By a Wandering Moon - Dreamy. But I'm not really in the mood for dreamy atm. On another day this might do a lot better.
John Carpenter - Skeleton - Meh. Instrumentals are rarely my thing. It's not bad or anything, it's just a big comedown after enjoying the first two so much. I think it'll end up in the middle of the pack for me.
Neil Young - My my, hey hey (Out of the blue) - I'm afraid Neil Young is another one I just don't get or really like bar a couple of songs.
Billy Joel - Prelude / Angry Young Man - He has a few songs I like. This isn't one of them. Also, doesn't he take his time to get to it?!?!? :D
Slackeye Slim - Vengeance Gonna Be My Name - My heart sank the moment I saw this was 6 minutes long. The opening notes did not provide any confidence. I think after about 3 minutes in I was just hearing it... Then it stopped. I looked at the time left. Over a minute!!! Thank you. :) I would not have experienced that joy had it been accurately timed.
01: Slackeye Slim - Vengeance Gonna Be My Name Holy crap, this is good. Don't know if it's better than my nom, but I'll put this at #1 'cause it's a new find. Spotify, here I come.
02: Juice Leskinen Slam - Myrkytyksen oireet
03: Fanny - Blind Alley This one's good too, and also a new find for me.
04: Modern English - I Melt With You

Round 5
1. Fanny - Blind Alley
(Damn, that was awesome. Just took a brief detour and listened to a few more of their songs, some of which are even better than this one. How have I never heard of these ladies?! At the very least you'd think they be celebrated as pioneers. This blows away anything I've heard from The Runaways or pretty much any other all-female rock band.)
2. Die Krupps - Nazis Auf Speed
(No clue why YouTube recommended to me a German electronic song about Nazi fighter pilots snorting drugs, but it did, and I dug it, so I nominated it.)
3. John Carpenter - Skeleton
(Not as eerie as I was expecting but still very cool.)
4. Modern English - I Melt with You
(Surprised by how quickly I found myself singing along to this. I've never loved it nor sought it out, but I've also never grown tired of it despite hearing it many times before in movies and on the radio. And I'm sure it'll now be playing in my mind the rest of the day. No wonder the song was a hit.)
5. Slackeye Slim - Vengeance Gonna Be Mine
(Wish the production was a bit cleaner. This would be right at home in a Tarantino flick.)
6. Neil Young - My My, Hey Hey
(The way most of you feel about Dylan is probably close to how I feel about Neil Young. It's always been tough for me to look past his obnoxious, nasally voice to appreciate what else he brings to the table.)
7. Deborah Harry - I Want that Man
(Nice while it lasts, but I'm sure I'll forget everything about it five minutes from now.)
8. Juice Leskinen Slam - Myrkytyksen oireet
(Would work better for me as an instrumental. Original link was unavailable so I went with this alternative (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GuGEr9wNj9k).)
9. Kid Rock - All Summer Long
(Sampling "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Werewolves of London" seemed like such a cheap ploy to manufacture a hit, but it paid off for him.)
10. Pauline - Dancin'
(I don't dance, but if I did I'm sure this would be fine. Good tempo and all that. Just not really my thing.)
11. Billy Joel - Prelude / Angry Young Man
(Before the pandemic brought everything to a halt, a buddy offered me a free ticket to a Billy Joel concert since his wife couldn't attend, but I told him to find someone who'd actually enjoy the experience 'cuz that person ain't me.)
12. Elysian Fields - Hit By a Wandering Moon
(I wanted to like this but it just didn't do anything for me. On a different day I could maybe get into the sultry, sedated vocals, but that chorus kinda sucks.)
13. Stevie Wonder- Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer
(Stevie's voice has always been like nails on a chalkboard to me. Also can't stop chuckling at the prospect that the woman he's singing about didn't actually leave him but simply walked into a separate room without telling his blind ass.)

Round 6 nomination:
Midland - Cheatin' Songs (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dRPDJPy9y-Q)
1 Modern English - I Melt With You - Top tune from the 80s. One of the best in the genre from that era, IMO.
2 Juice Leskinen Slam - Myrkytyksen oireet - I like pretty much every Finnish band I hear.
3 Fanny - Blind Alley - This just rocks! I checked out a couple more tracks and this band is excellent. Will listen more in future.
4 Die Krupps - Nazis Auf Speed - This also rocks!
5 Stevie Wonder - Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer - Classic Stevie song...
6 Slackeye Slim- Vengeance Gonna Be My Name - Great vibe!
7 Neil Young - My my, hey hey (Out of the blue) - Sometimes Neil Young REALLY annoys me. This is not one of those times.
8 Billy Joel - Prelude / Angry Young Man - A huge talent. Also an *******.
9 Deborah Harry - I Want That Man - I had not heard this. Pretty good pop song.
10 John Carpenter - Skeleton
11 Elysian Fields - Hit By A Wandering Moon - Like HK, just kind of not in the mood for this today.
12 Pauline - Dancin’ - Didn't do anything for me.
13 Kid Rock - All Summer Long - Rip-off!

1. Slackeye Slim - Vengeance Gonna Be My Name
- This track comes from a concept album, so if you are the type of person who would be into this, you might enjoy it more in context of the album. This style of alt-country certainly isn't for everybody, but if you like your westerns revisionist, this is the music equivalent of that type of thing.
2. Die Krupps - Nazis Auf Speed
- Well this is crazy
3. Modern English - I Melt With You
- Exactly what I want from 80s music.
4. Fanny - Blind Alley
- Yo, that drummer was getting after it. Also shout out to the lead singer/keyboardist. If she performed this well in a live setting doing both, that's impressive.
5. Neil Young - My my, hey hey (Out of the blue)
- Never been in love with Neil Young, but I think he is pretty solid.
6. John Carpenter - Skeleton
- John Carpenter has made some fantastic music in his career, the Halloween theme being some of the greatest music ever made for a film. So I was looking forward to checking this one out. It doesn't live up to the greatness Carpenter's capable of, but it's not bad. It reminded me of a little more boring, less tropical Todd Terje. It's pretty solid, but failed to meet my too high expectations.
7. Juice Leskinen Slam - Myrkytyksen oireet
- I expected some weird Scandinavian metal or something, but this is a pleasant surprise.
8. Billy Joel - Prelude / Angry Young Man
- I am not really a Billy Joel fan, but I'll give him credit for an impressive performance in this video.
9. Stevie Wonder - Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer
- He has a good voice, but this song is kinda boring.
10. Pauline - Dancin'
- Seems fine.
11. Elysian Fields - Hit By a Wandering Moon
- Feels like something is missing here. I don't care for the when the dude sings either.
12. Deborah Harry - I Want That Man
- I like Blondie, but I wasn't feeling this track too much. I liked the little breakdown.
13. Kid Rock - All Summer Long

1. Elysian Fields - Hit By a Wandering Moon
I love this band. I probably picked the wrong song for the tournament so now everyone except HashtagBrownies thinks they're crap  but they're seriously good, and I think this is an amazing song.
2. John Carpenter - Skeleton
**** yes John Carpenter. I love his **** and most of the stuff he's inpired.
3. Die Krupps - Nazis Auf Speed
****ing fun.
4. Fanny - Blind Alley
New to me and it's quote cool. Then again I like 70s stuff. Rocking voice!!
5. Juice Leskinen Slam - Myrkytyksen oireet
Another new one to me. I like it!
6. Stevie Wonder - Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer
He has such a great voice.
7. Neil Young - My my, hey hey (Out of the blue)
I like Neil Young quite a lot, but that's not a favourite song of mine from him.
8. Modern English - I Melt With You
An old classic.
9. Pauline - Dancin'
Never heard this before. Pretty cool dance track.
10. Kid Rock - All Summer Long
11. Slackeye Slim - Vengeance Gonna Be My Name
A little bit too jangly. I'd have liked it a lot more if there was a little more frequency range. I liked the idea though.

Round 6
I'm not sure why I'm doing this as I'm not in the best mood today, but I fear I might not get the chance to do it tomorrow, so today it is.
Ocean Colour Scene - The Riverboat Song - Not quite a rediscovered song, but one I keep forgetting about nominating since I started doing these things. I think that'll be my theme for this month.
Swirlies - Two Girls Kissing - I really liked this.
Powerwolf - Army of the Night - I'm liking this too. This has been a good start for this round. There have been rounds where I've been wishing for the end by this point.
Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks - This was quite nice.
Ennio Morricone - Un Altro Mare (featuring Edda Dell'Orso) - It's nice but it's too long. I feel like I want to speed up the opening titles and get to the film.
Christopher Lee - Massacre of the Saxons - I remember reading about this when it was released. I didn't really know what to think then and, having heard some of it, I'm still not quite sure.
HVØSCH - Our Sole Refuge - 7 minutes to begin with? Actually it wasn't too bad for the first 5. I know almost none of these songs so don't know where this one will finish.
Midland - Cheatin' Songs - Oh dear. Still, it's short and that'll save it from last place already.
INXS - The One Thing - I don't remember this INXS song. I think I know why.
Scorpions - Still Loving You - The first misfire, but I was sure I wouldn't care for it when I saw the list, so that it's the first I've not cared for is quite good. Not bad, just meh like most of their stuff I've heard.
Lefty Frizzell - Saginaw Michigan - I wasn't happy when I saw he was called Lefty. Better than the last one though.
Karl Blau - That's How I Got to Memphis - It's also how you ended up towards the bottom of my list.

Round 6
1. Lefty Frizzell - Saginaw Michigan
(Bona fide. I feel bad that I consistently rank gbg's noms near the bottom, so I'm happy to finally get a chance to put one of her songs at the top. Fun fact: I used to have a dog named Lefty.)
2. Midland - Cheatin' Songs
(I'm very curious to see what jiraffejustin has to say about this band. It won't surprise me if he says they are to country music what Hangman Page is to cowboys, but to me that isn't necessarily an insult. I've been listening to this album a lot lately and I really enjoy it, even though their sound harkens back to an era of country I don't typically love. Maybe my eardrums are just tickled by the Eagles-style harmonies and the echoes of Dwight Yoakam that I can hear in some of their songs. I know people question the band's authenticity and say that their image is too manufactured, but I don't care. To me they're a rare example of good commercial country in the modern age.)
3. Ocean Colour Scene - The Riverboat Song
(At the start I was negatively reminded of Oasis and similar British rock bands that don't appeal to me, but by the end I was grooving and really enjoying myself. Don't think I've ever heard of this group, but judging from this one song, they seem to have chosen the right influences.)
4. Powerwolf - Army of the Night
(The problem with a lot of power metal is that it's so cheesy and over the top that it's impossible to take seriously, which is a shame since there's a lot of great instrumentation that gets overlooked as a result. I should listen to this again without the video because I was laughing too much. Will probably still rank high due to the enormous fun factor.)
5. The Scorpions - Still Loving You
(My Scorpions - Greatest Hits CD used to get a lot of play. Not so much nowadays, but I still enjoy their music. This song is perfect for theatrical air guitar and hairbrush-as-microphone bathroom mirror performances.)
6. Christopher Lee - Massacre of the Saxons
(So I think Christopher Lee just became my favorite human of all-time?! Holy sh*t! When I saw that Hashtag had nominated this, I just assumed it was some tongue-in-cheek band name dedicated to the legendary actor. Never in my wildest imagination did I expect it to be the real Christopher Lee belting metal at the age of 90. My mind is shattered right now.)
7. Ennio Morricone - Un Altro Mare (featuring Edda Dell'Orso)
(R.I.P. to the greatest film composer of all-time.)
8. HVØSCH - Our Sole Refuge
(I assumed this was an instrumental and I was really digging it for the first three minutes. Turns out that long intro is just lulling you into a false sense of security as the vocals arrive like a sledgehammer. It felt like I was being bombarded by an apocalyptic firestorm for the remaining duration.)
9. Karl Blau - That's How I Got to Memphis
(Never heard of this dude, but I'm intrigued enough by his voice to seek out more. I'd like to hear something more soulful than wistful, as his voice clearly has a lot of character, and this overly repetitive song likely doesn't provide the best showcase. Those backing vocals are a bit obtrusive. Otherwise a pleasant listen.)
10. Foster the People - Pumped Up Kicks
(Damn, this song is 10-years-old already? That's almost as hard to believe as a song about school shootings becoming a monster commercial hit. The contrast between the dark subject matter and the airy pop sound is what always intrigued me about this song.)
11. INXS - The One Thing
(Outside of a handful of songs, INXS has never done much for me.)
12. Swirlies - Two Girls Kissing
(It's okay, but unfortunately it's 6-minutes long instead of three, so "okay" starts to morph into something less than okay . . . okay?)
Good round. Even my least favorite songs were decent.

Round 6
1. Lefty Frizzell - Saginaw Michigan
(Bona fide. I feel bad that I consistently rank gbg's noms near the bottom, so I'm happy to finally get a chance to put one of her songs at the top. Fun fact: I used to have a dog named Lefty.)
Don't feel bad. I always expect my noms to come in last. I'm just happy when somebody likes them enough that they rate them somewhere in the middle. :)

1. Lefty Frizzell - Saginaw Michigan
- When I saw that this was nominated, I already knew what my #1 pick was going to be. This is as easy of a choice as I've ever had to make. Left Frizzell has a classic voice, performed classic country music, and on the country music Mt. Rushmore, I think it would be a mistake not to put his head right next Hank, Sr.
2. Karl Blau - That's How I Got to Memphis
- I initially heard this song because I was looking for more covers of this particular song. It was written and performed by Tom T. Hall and then Bobby Bare, but I heard it first when I heard Whitey Morgan's version. This is very different take on this classic country song, but it has grown on me. Karl Blau is an odd individual in the underground country sphere, but I'm glad he's here.
3. Midland - Cheatin' Songs
- Captain Spaulding as funny as your Hangman/Midland comparison is to me, I like Midland a lot more than I do Hangman. If mainstream country wants to go full Midland you will get absolutely zero complaint from me. Authenticity is a big deal in the world of country music, but if music is good then music is good. I know everything matters, but sometimes being good is good enough. I don't love all their songs, but I would love it if mainstream country always sounded like Midland. I particularly enjoy "Fourteen Gears". They are smooth, but don't feel out of place in a smoky playlist.
4. Powerwolf - Army of the Night
- The video is goofy as hell, but the song is a blast.
5. Christopher Lee - Massacre of the Saxons
- Go on then, Christopher Lee.
6. Ennio Morricone - Un Altro Mare (featuring Edda Dell'Orso)
- Kinda Sexy. R.I.P. to the GOAT.
7. Ocean Colour Scene - The Riverboat Song
- This is fine; I just have a hard time coming up with enough to say about this after listening to some my top voted songs. I dig the little funky breakdown at the end though.
8. Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks
- This is an interesting song just based solely on the subject matter and the way it's delivered. I can't decide if I want to like it more than I already do or dislike it more than I already do. This song deserves credit for approaching this subject matter and not shying away from it, not blaming guns, and being deeper than the music might make you think it is.
9. Scorpions - Still Loving You
- I'm kinda into this song, which isn't a given with Scorpions songs. Maybe not a full six-and-a-half minutes into type of thing though.
10. HVØSCH - Our Sole Refuge
- I dig the creepy industrial sound. Fine song.
11. Swirlies - Two Girls Kissing
- Six minutes feels like a long time if you aren't too into a song. This song doesn't really sound that bad, but I don't want to listen to it for that long.
12. INXS - The One Thing
- I don't like INXS.

Listening now - votes to come asap!
1 HVØSCH - Our Sole Refuge - This surpassed my nominee to take first on my ballot.
2 INXS - The One Thing - Another 80s gem.
3 Ennio Morricone - Un Altro Mare (featuring Edda Dell'Orso) - Wonderful stuff...
4 Christopher Lee - Massacre of the Saxons - I had no idea. Dude is legendary!
5 Ocean Colour Scene - The Riverboat Song - Good tune!
6 Scorpions - Still Loving You - Probably wouldn't place this highly in another round, but the beck half of this ballot was pretty rough for me.
7 Lefty Frizzell - Saginaw Michigan - Good, not great.
8 Swirlies - Two Girls Kissing - This represents the last tune in this round I was able to get all the way thorough.
9 Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks - I never liked these guys. Still don't.
10 Powerwolf - Army of the Night - Metal is normally a shoe-in for me. This is too symphonic and over-the-top for my taste.
11 Karl Blau - That's How I Got to Memphis - Nope
12 Midland - Cheatin' Songs - Nope x 2

I'm curious what he's listening to nowadays as it's always something unique and interesting and I miss interacting with him.)
