The Dark Crystal
Narrator: The Skeksis, with their hard and twisted bodies, their harsh and twisted wills. For a thousand years they have ruled. Yet now, there are only ten: a dying race, ruled by a dying Emperor, imprisoned within themselves in a dying land.
Unlike many Fantasy films that pit Good vs Evil, The Dark Crystal seeks out the Balance aka the bringing together of the two extremes since they are but splinters of a whole. In this instance, a shard of the great crystal that split an elderly race into two distinct creatures. And, now, a thousand years later, the prophecy to find and return the shard is played out.
The details when it comes to the world building is truly impressive. I always find myself trying to take all of the scenery in any time I would watch this.
And while Jen seemed rather un-lifelike which, for nearly every puppet/muppet created and used by Henson, Oz and the other puppeteers, bringing life to objects is a beautiful art form. Which is why, I would imagine, for a lot of us to have Jen fall short of what is normally a given for anything created by these masters causes a severe road bump in viewing enjoyment.
To negate that I did make an extra effort to skip past this common critique and simply enjoyed this fantasy world and its denizens.
And it was quite the wonderful viewing, indeed.

I haven't seen Disney's live action remake of Beauty and the Beast yet, but it's on my watchlist. Is it really that bad? What didn't you like about it?
Obnoxious characters, bad acting, and the songs were annoying from what I remember.

I seem to feel the complete opposite because I connect so well that I forget that I'm watching a movie.
Unfortunately, I can't forget it is a movie as Drew is a little girl in this. I love her films as an adult...
EverAfter and Never Been Kissed are favorites.
I might also try to rewatch Kwaidan before submitting my list because there were several posts explaining some of the things that I missed in the movie. I don't really expect either of these rewatches to change my list, but I want to give each of these movies a fair chance.
Thats awesome because I don't want to be discouraged from nominating challenging films. It's a textually dense film and I do feel it's rewarded for those that pay attention to it.

That's a shame. I was thinking about buying the DVD, but maybe I'll just wait for it to air on TV instead. (It sounds like the commercials might make for some nice breaks in the movie.)

Again, I'm the opposite. This was the first movie that I ever saw Drew Barrymore in, and I haven't seen her in many other movies over the years, so I'll always think of her as the little girl in E.T. (But I've had the DVD of EverAfter sitting on my shelf for years, so I should actually find the time to watch it. It sounds like my type of movie.)

Don't ever let anyone discourage you from nominating any movies that you want to nominate. The whole point of these HoFs is for people to watch movies that they might not watch on their own. If you love the movie, hopefully someone else will see what you see in the movie, and they'll love it too.

Good day, fellow adventurers! There have not been any major changes to our journey, so those of you who are still walking the path need not fear for any last minute twists. I've called you together simply to share a progress report of our quest. I will continue to summon you all on a weekly basis from now until the deadline.
We have already passed the halfway point of our eleven week commitment. Just 5 weeks remain to complete your tasks, as the deadline is still set to Saturday, September 19th. Most of our fellowship are not in any danger, though some have started to fall behind.

The Dark Crystal
Jim Henson’s wonderful and often dark fantasy film is a treat for the eyes. This was before CGI became so rampant (and often times lazily used).
The story is a simple one. A gelfing, named Jen is given a task. The story is thin, and simple. But that’s not the point. The special effects is what matters here.
Henson has created a literal, breathing and vibrant world. Full of wondrous creatures and strange flora and fauna. You can see the care and love put into it to create them. Perhaps a bit too much, at that. At times it seems almost distracting from the film. Especially when he pauses on some creature in the foreground before breaking to Jen.
At times the pacing is a bit slow as well.
But none of those detract from a good film. The characters, and their respective races, the skeksis, Gauthim, Mystics and crystal bats, are all a great to look at.
It’s an achievement that seemed almost impossible to consider without resorting to CGI.
But that’s perhaps a testament to the imagination of Henson.
Good pick. Been way too many years since I last saw this child hood favorite.

Well this was.....interesting. It would be very easy for me to slam this whole movie and trash it to pieces but there actually we're a lot of decent things to it. First I found Jodelle Ferland's performance pretty admirable, especially for someone who was around 10-11 years old when this movie was actually filmed. I don't think I've seen any of her works besides this movie. And of course seeing Jeff Bridges if even in a super limited role was really cool here. I thought the film looked really good too, a very dark imaginative setting made by Gilliam.
For the extreme hate is the performance of Brendan Fletcher who was both horrendous and in a way gross. Kind of acted like a mental Forrest Gump if that makes sense. And those little puppets were pretty damn annoying too. I wonder if the film would have worked really well without these two things going against it, but then also that makes it a completely different film.
Still, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't at least entertained by the majority of the film, save for a bunch of parts that had no place in the film in my opinion.

Draco: Such deception hardly befits a knight of the Old Code.
Bowen: Ha! Fleecing Einon's lackeys, that's a service to mankind.
Draco: Is it? When you squeeze the nobility, it's the peasants who feel the pinch.
Borrowing from Arthurian Legend regarding the "Knights of the Old Code" we have the groundwork for a fantastical story of Honor and, always the counterpart; Betrayal. Giving us the arc of lost faith and the eventual return of Hope. Though not entirely grand in the more poetic scope. It is merely the focus of the main characters, Bowen (Dennis Quaid) and Draco (voiced by Sean Connery) and the cause of venomous despise by David Thewlis' Einon. Mix in a little tongue in cheek and you get a fun, enjoyable romp into the Sword & Dragon Fantasy Realm.
While the secondary tier of actors; Julie Christie, Dina Meyer and Pete Postlethwaite are all enjoyable to watch, for me, the above three bring forth the full parameter of this story/film. All fitting their roles extremely well. Connery's voice brings the romantic gravitas to Draco and Quaid does a splendid job of the old knight who has lost his faith and as become a mercenary killer of dragons. And so far as contemptible Kings are concerned, Thewlis makes his devious/cruel Einon stand above the usual grind of despots that habitat fantasy realms.
This is not an epic or a familiar tale revised, this is the comfort of said familiar tale that brings a smile to us who enjoy its telling.

Lord of the Rings; Fellowship of the Ring
Sam: This is it.
Frodo: This is what?
Sam: If I take one more step, it'll be the farthest away from home I've ever been.
Frodo: Come on, Sam. Remember what Bilbo used to say: "It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."
Of the trilogy this is my favorite. While the following two are epic in their battles and struggles, this is the introduction to it all. To Middle Earth. The One Ring. The Shire. Gandalf. All of it. This was the film that gave me a relaxed sigh realizing that Peter Jackson was The Guy to bring JRR Tolkien's world to celluloid.
Because a lot of us fantasy geeks wasn't sure it was going to be possible. We knew it wasn't going to be an exact duplication of the books, but d@mn if he didn't show serious love and attention to detail when it came to the world and the characters that Tolkien inspired so many of us as we read his works.
Now, of course, the nitpickers DID have their day complaining about the "size comparison" of everyone, which, considering the amazing work of not only tackling one of the most renown fantasy works of the twentieth century, but then doing such an incredible job recreating it with all its splendor, was and is, in my eyes, a tad petty.
On this recent watch I made absolutely sure to sit back in a recliner at home and watch on a large TV screen for a more full appreciation and I found myself recollecting to a number of Fantasy artists from when I was a young geek as I revisited one beautiful background to the next. Specifically the Hildebrandt Brothers, which I am assuming, along with the core material, Jackson was combing through theirs and others like them when it came to composition.
Much like The Godfather is the epitome of Gangster films, this is for Fantasy/ Sword & Sorcery films.
F@CKIN BRAVO rauldc14!!

For QUITE a while I couldn't watch 'em without getting aggravated because of how MUCH he changed the story to make it more of a prequel than what it originally was -- a stand-alone story that equals one film and not 3. Jamming every bit of Lord of Rings references like a drunken hostess overstuffing a turkey for a bigger guest list. It drove me crazy.
Then my roommate gave me a simple perspective to look at it as fan fiction.
That helped. I still had to prepare myself with that mantra: "It's fan fiction. It's fan fiction. Ed, it's just fan fiction. . ."
It'll take another watch or two to appreciate the magic WITHOUT the grumbling.

Excalibur
I’m starting with this one because I have a healthy respect for Citizens nominations. It was the one film that caught my eye when nominations were first anounced.
John Boorman weaves a tale about the legend of King Arthur without the glamour. He replaces it with the mud and blood that so often, and accurately, permeated these legends.
Arthur was born of a tryst of a King, under the guise of another, aided by Merlin, and of Ygraine, the wife of a rival King.
The first 15 minutes or so depicting these scenes are riveting. Somehow, the films falters a bit once Arthur is grown. The dialogue is clunky at times, although nowhere near as atrocious as I have read it was supposed to be.
The films also is too brisk as we move in and out of scenes without really getting a full chance to appreciate them. Lancelot’s introduction feels rushed for example. As does The scene where Guinevere and Lancelot finally give into temptation.
But it’s shot magnificently, as Boorman is able to capture the battle scenes without getting lost in the crowd, instead focusing on the individual matches. And the scenes with mountains covered in snow, fog or rain are amazing to look at. And especially the scenes where a rejuvenated Arthur rides through the forest as it blooms healthy again. And that final battle between Arthur and Modred, withe red sun between them in the horizon.
As for the acting, other then Helen Mirren, Patrick Stewart and Nicol Williamson , it’s mostly forgettable. Not terrible mind you, but wooden in some approaches. Indeed, Nigel Terry as Arthur is the most disappointing. But whatever failings he has is more then made up for by Williamson as Merlin, always skulking in the back ground, an ominous presence watching and waiting. Always answering with cryptic riddles. He has the best lines and the best scenes.
But isn’t not quite enough to make this among the best films for me. It’s close, but it suffers from the previous issues as well as a badly paced search for Holy Grail. It drags on and the film only recovers once Arthur is rejuvenated.
Still, it is a good film.

I tried rewatching Tideland, but sadly, it didn't change my opinion of the movie. I just can't get past the annoying and disgusting characters to care about anyone in the movie.
I can understand from the explanations here about the comparisons with Alice in Wonderland, but I just don't see it when I watch the movie. Alice in Wonderland is a wonderful story about a young girl who falls into a rabbit hole and has a fun and amazing adventure, but Tideland is a story about a young girl who loses her parents and just ends up in a creepy world.

Alice in Wonderland is by far better than Tideland. However Tideland was amusing even of I didn't care for it all too much.
-- a side quest --
Tideland by Mitch Cullin
I decided to venture from the main quest too, and do some side quests for the loot and glory. I got into my hands an ancient manuscript foretelling the events shown in my nomination and was astounded by the clarity of this ancient prophet's vision.

After reading the novel, it's easy to believe that Gilliam loves it. His film is one of the most faithful adaptations I know. The differences between the two works are mainly cosmetic: the movie tells the story in chronological order while in the book, the events preceding the farmhouse are shown as flashbacks, there's a little difference in the order things happen, and we get little more character details (especially for Jeliza-Rose). Other than those, it's very much the same story.
The way the book is written takes some getting used to. It's sparse and hectic first-person narration, like a mixture of childish thinking and competent prose. I didn't like it at first, but it did grow on me. Maybe (probably) because I've seen the film first, I did find the voices of the characters to perfectly fit with Gilliam's film (to a degree, that I was reading Dickens' lines in his movie-voice). The two versions of the story are inseparable.
And about Alice in Wonderland? All the references are from the book (I think it actually has little more of them than the film). I wouldn't call it a retelling of Alice (any more than a retelling of Psycho), but it certainly has affected the book, and therefore the movie as well. The sexual themes in the book are slightly more profound than in the film, so if they bothered you in Gilliam's vision, you may want to skip the book.
Just like the movie, I found the novel Tideland to be good. I don't know if it would work as well without the film, but it's a great companion piece to that (in a way, the film brings the book's slightly flat characters to life).

Beauty and the Beast
This foreign version of the French fairy tale is a more darker telling, staying closer to its source material then the more well known Disney animated version. I have not seen Cocteau’s 1946 version Nor Disney’s live action update. Not the other reversion that I’m less aware of. So I can’t compare them accurately.
As it is, this film does a decent job of telling the story. We get the feeling of wonder and danger that surrounds the castle of the Beast/Prince. It seems a bit more reliant on CGI, and I found myself wishing they would have used an actual castle.
Belle and The Beast are well cast, Leya Seydoux and Vincent Cassell respectively. Seydoux captures both her beauty and her adventurous spirit, while Cassel brings a sad quality to the Beast. He captures both the pride of the prince he previously was, and the menace of the beast he currently is, while lamenting his curse he brought upon himself. Balancing these is no easy task.
I do wish they spent more time developing the rapport between Belle and Beast, and less time on his background that brought upon his curse. And the ending with the vines felt like cheap terror. But this isn’t a bad film. It’s ok. I feel the same for it as I did Excalibur and The Dark Crystal.
A decent film that could have been more.

Kiki’s Delivery Service
Studio Ghibli has a way with stories. When one mentions animation, they’re up there with Disney and Pixar.
Kiki tells the story of a young precocious witch who flies off to start her own life. She brings along her cat, Jiji, voiced by the marvelous Phil Hartman In his final role before his untimely murder.
Kiki is cute, I’ll just say it. Voiced by Kirsten Dunst, she’s naive and a bit stuck up when a young boy Gives her some attention. She doesn’t have any particular skill, even as a witch. So she just relies on her flying and opens her own delivery service.
What follows is a somewhat interesting story of a young girl trying to make her way in a large city. Until one day, Things go wrong. It’s a cute story, and it’s filled with regular characters that one could meet pretty much anywhere. Miyazaki is able to capture the personalities effortlessly here, such as the painter Ursula, and the two old ladies Kiki befriends on one of her deliveries.
But at the center of it all is Kiki. It’s her story, and a wonderful one at that.

Excalibur
So I'm not going to lie, I thought this would be one that I would enjoy. I actually saved it near the end of my watching because of that. But I was oh so damn wrong.
Just about everything to do with the movie doesn't work for me. Arthur is as bland a character as can be. Yet that isn't even the end of the badness for me as the guy who played Merlin who was even worse. Just about every character in the film had me wishing I didn't have to watch this film.
The film feels oh so dated. Yeah it's almost 40 years old but it sure as hell wasn't entertaining. The visuals were pretty bad IMO and the battle scenes were just purely lame.
If I had to make some sort of an analogy to watching this film, I'd say it is like watching YouTube clips of people scraping their nails on a chalkboard. Dear God please never let me watch this again.
Do I have anything positive to say? Unfortunately I'm still fishing.

1-
I'd honestly rather watch Youtube clips of people scraping their nails on a chalkboard than have to sit through a single minute of Yellow Submarine again, so while I obviously enjoyed Excalibur a lot more than you did, I can certainly sympathize haha. Sorry the film didn't work for you at all.
It's interesting that there have been several reviews that were about how much someone hated a specific movie, but it's been a different movie for each person. I didn't like Tideland, but it sounds like rauldc14 and CosmicRunaway hated Excalibur and Yellow Submarine even more.
But on a lighter note, I rewatched Kwaidan, and while I still didn't like the movie that much, at least I understood more about what was going on in each of the stories, so it was definitely better than it was on the first watch.

Greetings once more, fellow travellers! Another week has passed, so I've summoned you together again to review our progress. Over 100 total write-ups have been posted so far: 88 from our primary quest, 13 additional film reviews, and 1 book report. Many are close to the end of their journey, and no one has fallen significantly behind.
However the deadline is fast approaching. There are only 3 weeks left until our quest comes to an end. Those who did not watch Return of the King before its disqualification have technically had an extra week already, and those who did watch it have reached the end of the path, or are just a step away. Because of that, there is currently no intention to extend the deadline past Saturday, September 19th.

Dragonslayer
Valerian: Are you afraid of dragons?
Ulrich: [confidently and calmly] No. In fact, if it weren't for sorcerers, there wouldn't be any dragons. Once, the skies were dotted with them. Magnificent horned backs, leathern wings... soaring... and their hot-breathed wind. Oh, I know this creature of yours... Vermithrax Pejorative. Look at these scales, these ridges. When a dragon gets this old, it knows nothing but pain, constant pain. It grows decrepit... crippled... pitiful. Spiteful!
When this first came out I wasn't much of a fan of it.
It didn't work for me at the time. Didn't think much of Peter MacNichol's Apprentice character, it took far too long for the dragon to finally appear and by then my interest had dropped too much to actually enjoy it. And I felt gypped when the very cool sorcerer got taken out so quickly and, like the dragon, his return didn't help my already aggravated viewing experience.
In short, as a teenager I had not the patience to appreciate this film properly.
I do now.
Very much so.
For one, while MacNichol's Galen is, as is typical of novices and apprentices, a bit on the whiny side, I have enjoyed his portrayals in a number of comedies and TV shows since then and with those enjoyed viewings, I actually did tolerate and, at times, enjoyed his performance.
The dragon's minimalist appearances works a lot better for me now. Like an old time ghost film, the lack of presence enhanced the menace far more. Like when you looked through his eyes and heard the rumble of fire within the pit of his stomach as the camera pulled back before the flame burst forward was pretty d@mn cool.
The same can be said about the slow rise of its head on a few shots had the same enjoyment for me. And when we got a good look, up close, the sinister aspect of his visage said everything. This wasn't a magical, mystical creature of lore. It was a volatile, dangerous beast of violence and fire.
And, like a number of theatrical thespians before and after him, Ralph Richardson was an absolute treat as Ulrich. I still would have loved to seen more of him but, in its place, I relished the time I DID get to see his character. Along with Hodge (Sydney Bromley) as the cantankerous servant.

All of it making for a rather pleasantly surprising enjoyable revisit. F@ckin YAY

Anthologies are difficult to pull off, and difficult to review. You have to rate each story and then measure them as a whole afterward. Sometimes you get a good one, such as Twilight Zone: the Movie, Or mediocre ones Such as Tales from the Darkside the movie, and Creepshow 1 and Creepshow 2. As such, I’m going to tackle these stories One at a time:
The Black Hair. Story of regret and revenge by the spirit of a wronged woman who was left by her husband for The daughter of a more prosperous famIly. The ending of this ones is filmed well, with the man aging before our eyes and the camera work giving the appearance of the man going mad as he attempts to flee. The hair looked a bit silly attacking him, but such was the limits of the special effects at the time. 2 1/2 *’s
The Lady of Snow
Now this looks amazing! The story of a peasant sworn to uphold a secret meeting with a spirit. If broken, she vows to kill him. Shortly afterwards, he meets a mysterious woman who never seems to age. The background of the painted sky with “eyes” ever watching. I knew this story beforehand, and it was even cribbed in Tales of the Datkside Only replace the spirit with a gargoyle. Still, there is a sadness to this, as it was inevitable the peasant would break his vow. But even then in a reprised by the ending. It doesn’t go for shock, but emotion. As both spirit and man are forever torn by grief. The way the lighting switches between the reveal in the scene is well done.
3 *’s
Loophole: I would have told the spirit “I have broken no vow. I have only told you, and since you are the spirit, you already knew, therefore I have told no one who isn’t already aware.”
Worth a try anyways.
Hoichi the earless
Again, I really like the start with the figure standing on a cliff overlooking the sea. Here we are told of a battle at sea between two rival clans. It’s elegantly staged, but not well choreographed. Rather, it is presented and told as if a stage production. The scene of the women throwing themselves off the boat into a Red Sea, covered in fog, is a great scene.
Their spirits are said to haunt the shores and prey upon the local fisherman.
Hoichi, A blind monk, is summoned every night to tell their tale to these very same spirits. He is sworn to secrecy. His nightly visits take a toll on him that, along with his absence, does not go unnoticed. An attempt to prevent the ghosts from claiming him further is made, with horrific results.
Here the rain, fog and sound are all used to great effect to set up the visuals. It helps set up the atmosphere.
3 *’s.
A Cup of Tea
We are warned about unfinished tales before this one begins.
Here we see a Samurai grabbing a drink. In each drink he sees the reflection of a mans face staring back at him. Eventually he drinks.
The same man visits him that night before vanishing. But before apparently being injured. His 3 retainers, also ghosts, appear to issue his veangence.
The Samurai fights with them, and the use of shadows and freeze frames are well done. It end abruptly, as it was an unfinished tale. The sudden ending brought to mind Fellini’s Satyricon, whose ending was similar.
2 1/2 *’s
Wonderful set pieces and engaging stories that actually kept my attention, waiting to see what would happen next. So much detail went into the scenes.
This is a really good movie, and I’m glad to have *finally* seen it after first hearing about many years ago.

God bless Mary for, as frantic as she does get, she's able to roll with it all as her kids take in an alien looking to phone home and, do just that -- go back home.
It's been several decades or more since I've watched this and it's been a lot of fun going back to revisit. It has a lot of heart and definitely gets you caught up in the kids as they do their best to help ET with a number of laugh out loud scenes and a number teary eyed ones as well.
While some of the effects are definitely dated, the magic still shines through and in the end, that's what matters.
Thank you gbg for nominating this.

It's interesting that you saw the first story as the story of the wronged woman. I saw it as the story of the man who regretted his decision to leave the woman he loved for what he thought would have been a happier life with more money.

I'm glad that were able to relive the magic of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Many of Spielberg's movies have family and/or parent issues, so it's not surprising that the mother in E.T. isn't a good mother. Having beer in the frig is just the tip of the iceberg when you realize that she left her youngest child, Gertie, home alone when she left to pick up Elliott from school. (But we needed that scene so E.T. could learn to talk.)

TideLand
Warning. This isn’t going to be a nice review.
This was hard to get through. Not because of the subject matter, mind you, that didn’t bother me. It was how boring it was. Terrible acted, terribly scripted and badly directed. It just sort of.....meandered on. I wanted to stop watching at about 20 minutes.
I’m usually a fan of Gilliam, but I’m never going To confuse him With the greats.
The subject matter didn’t seem suited for a fantasy film where the girl, orphaned by the untimely deaths of her parents due to separate overdoses, retreats to her own imagination where she speaks to the severed heads of her dolls. It should have been taken more seriously by Gilliam.
Once Dickens is introduced as a potential love interest that was extremely cringe inducing, I had pretty much decided that there was no saving this film.
That’s......that’s really all I can say about it.

I was going to rewatch the Bakshi Lord of the Rings film before the end of this HoF. Since I just have one film left for the 23rd (that I already watched part of), I should definitely get around to it sometime later this week or early next week.
Haven't started to read the books yet though, and probably never will haha.
I finally rewatched Excalibur today. I'll try to have a review (possibly an updated version of my old review) up in a few days. I'll also send in my vote soonish (there are two pairs of films that are really hard to put in order). Screw it, I'll vote now (the other pair included a bonus films so it doesn't matter that much and I'm quite sure of the order anyway).
Excalibur (1981)
Excalibur is a mythical movie, a pure fantasy that never aims for realism or historical accuracy. Its glossy and hazy visuals make it look like a dream. It's a fairytale for adults where knights wear their stylized plate armors 24/7, live the life of high adventure, and are heroes worthy of songs.
49065
The scope of the film (starting from Arthur's father, Uther, and ending to his death and departure to Avalon) is massive, and even at 140 minutes, it moves at a fast pace. There's little room for character development, and many of the knights are nothing but a name. The legend of Excalibur is greater than the people, and even the greatest heroes are mere pawns to something larger. I often complain about shallow characters, but here it doesn't bother me.
I think Excalibur is a somewhat unique movie. It's a combination of Hollywood epic, a fantasy b-movie (like Italian barbarian films) and European artsy fantasy (the first example that comes to mind is a Finnish tv-production Rauta-aika aka The Iron Age from '82). It's weird, it's campy, and it's like no other movie I know.
49066
I have only minor complaints. Some casting choices are a little off (Arthur for sure, I'm still torn about Merlin - I didn't mind Merlin being a bit odd this time). Some of the sets are totally bonkers, like the foil-covered castle walls. I get the knights wearing their armors 24/7, but Uther having sex wearing full plate maybe went too far.
Excalibur is one of the best fantasy movies ever made. It's a little rushed retelling of the Arthurian legend, but no other adaptation can match its style and weirdness.
P.S. Shamelessly recycled the pictures and half of the text from my original review.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982):
I first saw E.T. in the theater in 1982, and it almost immediately became one of my favorite movies. I've always believed that there must be life somewhere else in the universe, so I loved the idea that aliens came to Earth, and even better was the fact that they were friendly, not invaders trying to take over our planet.
I love the bond that E.T forms with Elliott. It feels like they need each other. E.T. needs Elliott to keep him safe until he can find his way home, and Elliott seems to be a loner who hangs out with his siblings, so he needs E.T.'s friendship. :)
I love how we don't see the faces of any adults, except Elliott's mother, until late in the movie. It makes it feel like they're dangerous, and the kids should avoid them.
I love some of the movie's comic moments, like E.T. blending into the stuffed animals in Elliott's closet, and Gertie dressing E.T. up in women's clothes.
I even love the heartbreak when it seems like we've lost E.T. before we can get him home, and then just when we get him back, we lose him again when we have to say goodbye to him. No matter how many times I watch this movie, I've never been able to make it through the final scene without crying. :bawling:
And I love the little nods to other movies, like Star Wars and Star Trek.

Dragon Heart
(Or oops, I forgot to write this review last night and watched a Spanish musical film called Holy Camp!)
Dragons are usually portrayed as terrifying Creatures of legend. So it was somewhat refreshing when we had one that was not only noble, but down right polite. Throw in the fact that he was voiced by Sean Connery and you would think it’s a winner.
One would think anyways......
The problem here, aside from the dialogue, which I’ll get into shortly, but the nonsensical scenes and the whole dynamic behind what is essentially a buddy movie.
Dennis Quaid plays Bowen, a man who once trained the prince, now King, who hunts down dragons and kills them. After a battle with Draco, the aforementioned dragon, they come to an agreement on a partnership. Suddenly, Draco doesn’t mind that Bowen has single handedly hunted down his kind and has left him the last of his kind. How convenient for the plot.
The dialogue is sketchy at times. Lines like “I merely chewed in self defense! But I never swallowed!”
And scenes like the one on a village where the villages, who were previously fearful of the dragon, are suddenly emboldened by the sight of an obviously faked death by Draco and decide they want to eat him. After he escapes, they then turn to Bowen and his friends and decide to I guess eat them as well? As they all in unison chant “Meat! Meat! Meat!” It’s a silly scene.
The acting is ok, for what the film is. David Thewlis as the corrupted King shows some of what we come to expect from the decent actor we know today.
Altogether, it’s much like most of the films here. Not really bad, per se, but not that good either. Hovering somewhere along the lines of mediocrity.
Sorry, I don’t mean that to be so harsh as it sounds.

finished the last two films today and will try to get reviews up tomorrow (Sunday) and my vote sent out along with them.
https://www.indiewire.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/dark-crystal.jpg?w=780
I figured I would save the best for last, Jim Hensen's The Dark Crystal is a film I didn't grow up with but decided I was going to "save" it for later in my life. And for those of you who saw Wizards know that I have an open mind for fantasy films....so I figured this would be in the running for my #1 vote.
I was let down. First the good part visually the film has incredible production values, Jim Hensen's world is fully realized and several of the puppets look amazing. But while the puppets looked great the movement was when the film fell apart to me. Normally I can disassociate the puppet from the character but for whatever reason I couldn't with this one.
I'd describe the plot but that was another issue I had with it. The movie felt like 90% world building and set up and then everything was just slapped together at the end. Almost like they couldn't film a 2nd act so they just extended a prologue for hour...it was a good pick but it just wasn't for me.

Kiki's Delivery Service
I like how easy and laid back this film is to watch. I like the world that this film is centered in. Kiki is a pretty good lead character, and without a doubt the cat steals the show. I love his sarcasm. I wouldn't put this among Miyazakis greats but it is a good film in it's own right. The animation is really vivid to me too, it's one of Miyazakis sharpest looking films.

Tideland
Jeliza-Rose: Squirrel butts don't glow.
I'm not sure if I would necessarily place this as Gilliam's darkest film, it was, for me, his most unsettling. And yet, much like many of his films, I still remained, very much, fascinated by it.
There has always been a kind of fanciful barrier between us and the Grimm Fairy Tale-like stories that are the blood flow of his films. Not here. It was stripped away, Placing us in the barren lands besides our "Alice" instead of at a safe, fantastical distance. What would be metaphorical symbolism are, instead, stark realities. Madness is not amusing eccentricities but dangerous mental illnesses. Creating an uneasiness, and at quite a few times, very palpable trepidation at what may occur next.
The safety net as been snatched away and the high wire - cut.
This is, in very equal proportions, the film's Achille's Heel and it's brightest, shining light.
I have continually enjoyed Terry Gilliam's films throughout his career post-Monty Python as he delved into his own, beginning withTime Bandits (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088846/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_12) when it premiered at the movies when I was a Junior in High School. I would continually view his films as they came out from then on. Rewatching many of them. Gilliam has a deep love for both the fantastical but also for the darker imaginings of the splintered mind adorned in the fanciful.
Should he have continued with the formula; specifically the fanciful with this film?
I don't think so.
And even though I was continually uneasy throughout my viewing, I must applaud the means to the end of this dark adventure set in modern times.
I saw a review on IMDb that spoke of an opening, in B&W, much like the one in the 1930's Frankenstein, featuring Terry Gilliam informing us that "we may find the movie shocking, but that it should be seen as through the eyes of a child -- innocent."
An excellent note on how to view the film.
The version I watched did not have that and there is a part of me that was glad to be flung down the "rabbit hole" without any safety. It does give me an added appreciation after the fact.

The Lords The Ring: The Fellowship
“Is it secret?! Is it safe?!”
This film is the film that when discussing Pure fantasy films, it starts and ends with LotR.
And with good reason. This has it all. Adventure, a quest, heroes, elves, dwarves, goblins, orcs, trolls, wizards. And of course the most impressive of them all, the Balrog.*
All brought to life by Peter Jackson.
Watching it again, I pay more attention to the way he captures the mountains, the streams, the meadows and the forests. Iirc, he filmed mostly in New Zealand? I’m sure someone can chime in here.
But above all, the acting. McKellan and Gandalf got the Oscar nomination, but Viggo was also instrumental in bringing Aragorn to life. Torn by inner turmoil of a fate he feels he can’t escape.
There are a few minor quibbles here. The rivalry between Gimli and a Legolas felt forced at times, And at times certain scenes felt too long. But overall, a great film!

With four ghost stories taken from a book from 1904, there is definitely a serene, poetic nuance to these stories and their presentation. Even, for me, the intense moments of each of them still retained that relaxed tone. Creating a more profound parable-like story telling.
Each story, from my understanding, represents each season of the year. With a variety in connent they connect to one another through the aforementioned nuance. Told in a kind of romanticism, we are more enchanted by the atmosphere and stories, not haunted or terrified by them. And this is in no way a critique, having enjoyed that enchantment throughout.
I am quite hard put to breakdown a list of favorite to least. Each story is told very well and has a value and beauty of their very own. But, in the end, while enjoyed them all, there was something a little more special in the third, "Hoichi the Earless" with the ghosts of a great battle wishing to hear of the saga in song that I liked ever so slightly above the others.

It has been a long and arduous journey through a variety of realms,
but we have reached the end of our harrowing quest with enough time
left to sit and rest at the inn while waiting to see if these trials have
ultimately been worth the risk.
Our path took us through epic battles, deep into a dragon's lair,
and gave us a closer look at the world of childhood imagination.
Along the way, we encounterd extra-terrestrial beings, phantasms,
and came face to face with man's inner demons.
So what has happened to our nominated films over the course
of this Hall of Fame? They have been tested, they have weighed,
and their final ranking is now before us!

Jodelle Ferland was a really amazing actress in this. She was so natural and could convey all sorts of emotions, that adult actors would have had a problem portraying.
It's visually gorgeous (like Gilliam's films usually are), and the combination of childish innocence, disturbing events, escapism, and adaptation creates quite a unique blend.

The puppets looked great, the film goes with a less is more approach and I prefer that in my films.
The movie plays out like a religious allegory. The dragon lives down a pit with a lake of fire that brings seems like Hell. It’s visage calls to midnight satan with his horns, and even is referred to as Lucifer. The wizard returns to life and stands on a cliff almost God like standing amongst the clouds hurling lightning at it. All while the townspeople pray.

I liked Dragonslayer for the bad guy and for the way the virgin princess sacrificed herself. That was unexpected. I think the lead teen protagonist dropped this movie down a bit though. Though I did like his girl side kick, too bad she wasn't the apprentice wizard instead.

Excalibur is sadness at a great loss, a lament of things that were. A foreshadowing of things that might come to be if mankind doesn't change it's ways...

The production design of The Dark Crystal is simply outstanding. It is a highly imaginative film with fantastic visuals. The mix of real locations, matte paintings, and a frankly ridiculous amount of props and puppets create a magical, alien world that is a treat to witness.

La Belle et la Bête (2014)
Nominated By: MovieGal
Befitting a beautiful romantic fairy tale, every little nuance from the cold wintry town of where Belle's family lives to the grandiose, exquisite castle and grounds of where the Beast dwells. Adding to that, I found the reciting of the story as a bedtime story was just one more enchanting nuance to this adaption.
Its story asks us to look inside ourselves and of others for what is good. The appearance on the outside truly means nothing but its what is in our hearts that makes us who we are. Makes us human, not a beast. It teaches us diversity and what it is to truly means to love everyone for what is inside them.

I love the bond that E.T forms with Elliott. It feels like they need each other. E.T. needs Elliott to keep him safe until he can find his way home, and Elliott seems to be a loner who hangs out with his siblings, so he needs E.T.'s friendship.

I still think I have OpenOffice installed but I've switched pretty much completely to Google equivalents.

I was surprised to see that I wasn't the only one to have E.T. ranked last, and even more surprised that it didn't end up breaking the top 3. I was pretty certain that it would have been in the running for #1, but I was clearly wrong about that.

Kiki's Delivery Service / 魔女の宅急便 (1989)
Nominated By: ahwell
The animation is really vivid to me too, it's one of Miyazakis sharpest looking films.
Kiki's Delivery Service reminds me not only of how much I need movies in my life, but of why I love what I love, why I do what I do. There are few movies out there that have more power to me. And to say that I was inspired enough from a movie to create something of my own is about the highest praise I can give it.

I did graphs for an HoF once, I forget which one. I just used an online graph site, it worked OK for me.
For all 3 of the HoFs I've hosted, I've made a spreadsheet to keep track of the lists, points awarded, and to help calculate the final results. I also double check the point totals by hand in case I coded the sums wrong, but I haven't had an issue yet. Since I have the values in the spreadsheet already, it's just a couple of clicks to get the application to produce a graph, so it's quite convenient.

It is filled with hauntingly beautiful imagery, and features many elaborate sets, costumes, and effects. The design is fantastic.
On a technical level...it's less is more but also everything is practical and gorgeous. The effects enhance the story and even though it's 60 years ago for me it has more of an impact.

This film is the film that when discussing Pure fantasy films, it starts and ends with LotR.
From a pure production standpoint, it's hard to argue just how well this film is artistically. The cast was perfectly chosen, the score is amazing, and the visuals are super impressive. The film is obviously long but you don't really feel the length at all because you feel like you are a part of it's world.

For each of the films, I decided to take a quote from the person who nominated it, as well as someone who had the film in their top 3. I didn't have to think hard on who to pick for The Dark Crystal's other quote, because MG was the only person other than me to have the film ranked that high.
Hell yeah, Im a fan of the artistic creator of the film and Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal are amazing and from my early teenhood.

I spent a lot of time debating whether I should rank Fellowship or Return of the King at #1. As much as I've pointed out the flaws of RotK in this thread, many scenes still gives me chills, and it's arguably one of the best conclusions to a film series in the history of cinema. So I placed it at #1, but was kind of relieved when it was disqualified, because I do think that Fellowship is the more balanced film.
After the two Lord of the Rings films, Kwaidan was easily my next favourite nomination. Even its weakest segment is still enjoyable, and I'd still be impressed with those visuals even if the film wasn't as old as it actually is. I'm glad that it placed so high in the HoF.
Here was my final list:
DQ. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
01. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
02. Kwaidan
03. The Dark Crystal
04. Excalibur
05. Kiki's Delivery Service
06. DragonHeart
07. Dragonslayer
08. La Belle et la Bête
09. Tideland
10. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Thanks everyone for participating, and for the positive feedback on this reveal, even though it's exactly the same thing I've done for the other Hall of Fames I've hosted haha.

I didn't expect E.T. to win, but I'm glad that most people liked it. Hopefully some people can see it more as a fantasy movie than a sci-fi movie now. Not surprisingly, it was #1 on my list.
I was surprised that people didn't like DragonHeart more. I thought it was one of the most enjoyable movies in this HoF. I had it ranked at #2 on my list.
I don't think that La Belle et la Bête is the best of the "Beauty and the Beast" movies, but it's a good movie, and I liked it a lot. It ended up at #3 on my list. (Those of you who know my feelings about foreign movies with subtitles should realize that #3 is actually a very high ranking from me for this movie.)
I haven't seen a lot of Miyazaki's movies, but I liked Kiki's Delivery Service enough that it was #4 on my list. I probably won't go looking for more of his movies on my own, but I'm looking forward to seeing a few more of them in future HoFs.
While I wasn't a big fan of the Lord of the Rings movies, I'm not surprised that The Fellowship of the Ring came in at #1. It's an enjoyable trilogy, and even though it wasn't my favorite movie, I think it deserved to win. The whole trilogy ended up in the middle of my list, probably because the movies in this HoF were basically split up as 1) movies I liked, 2) movies I respected more than liked, 3) movies that were okay, but I thought I would have liked them more, and 4) movies that I disliked. (Fortunately there were only two movies in that last category.) The LotR trilogy were the movies that I respected, but someday I hope to rewatch them, and maybe move them up to the higher category.
This was my ranked list:
1) E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
2) DragonHeart (1996)
3) La Belle et la Bête (2014)
4) Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)
5) The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
6) The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
7) The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
8) The Dark Crystal (1982)
9) Dragonslayer (1981)
10) Excalibur (1981)
11) Kwaidan (1964)
12) Tideland (2005)

I gave pretty low overall ratings to everything after 5 but there was strange liking to 6 and 7 even though I didn't rate them as such. I think a film like Kwaidan could be liked even more in the future, perhaps even Tideland.
I think Return of the King would have beat Fellowship possibly.
