Here we are again my friends! Time for our 22nd Hall of Fame! Time to add another great winner to our Hall of Fame entrants! I hope we get a nice interesting mix again, seems like we always do. Happy watching!

Rules will remain what they have been. Here they are as a brief reminder:
Movie Nominations: Any movie under 240 minutes can be nominated, except for previous HoF winners.

PM me your nominations and include: film title & year of release. Keep your nomination a secret until the reveal of the films.

Open Door Policy: For one week after the reveal of the movie nominations, I will be taking new members.

Length of HoF: There will be approximately one week of viewing time per movie, so if there are 10 movie nominations the HoF will be about 10 weeks long. The deadline to finish will be posted after the HoF starts.

During the HoF: Everyone watches the nominated movies and will discuss them in this thread. You need to write at least a few sentences about your thoughts on each movie, after you watch it. Part of the process is discussion of the movies as a group.

Note: If you've seen a movie recently or have seen it many times you can skip watching it, otherwise you have to watch all nominated movies.

Requesting help to locate movies: If you have trouble locating a movie make a post and ask for help. When responding with a movie link send it by private message, don't post links or embed films in this thread.

Dropouts: Members who don't finish will be disqualified and their movie nomination removed from the HoF. Please make sure you have the time to complete this, it helps to start watching the films right away so you don't have a bunch of movies to watch at the end.If for any reason you do need to drop out, absolutely let me know you can't finish.

New HoF Members: New HoF members will need to post their movie write ups on a regular basis. 1 write up in the first 2 weeks, and 3 in the first month and so on. That way we know your keeping up. If you're going to be absent from watching movies for a period PM me and let me know, otherwise I might think you've dropped out.

Taking a wait and see approach here. I’m still working a lot at work, but that may be coming to an end soon.
I’ve just been too exhausted to watch movies lately. Which sucks 😫

you (and in fact everyone) have seen my nom but LB shows that you gave it a 4.5 so at least it would be a fun watch:p

which brings up the question why I'm even nominating something everyone has watched... well I looked through and I don't think I could nominate something no one has seen yet, most of my options are very very well known at the moment and I love this movie to death so I just picked it.

Some prefer nominations to be unique & underseen. Others think an HoF should be about nominating the best of the best.

To me what's cool about a general HoF is the diversity, as we get a good mixture. This time I picked a well known, but underseen classic film. So far no one has seen it, that's posted on the thread.

I saw it yesterday and can still see it today. Maybe try clearing your cache? That usually sorts out little weird issues like that.

I have Firefox set to clear all cache, history and cookies upon shut down. I also just tried a different browser, Chromium and it didn't show me the photo either. It's so weird!

It must be my internet provider service or my DNS lookup? This is what I get when I right click on the image and select 'view image'.

Actually, now the image isn't showing up for me either. Perhaps it was still stored in my cache, and that's why I could see it earlier. I get the same screen when trying to view image as well.

It's a well-known movie so I'm sure some of you will have already seen it. It's also pretty polarizing so I expect to see some hate for it.

You haven't seen mine, but Ed has. So far he's the only one that's seen it (according to the MoFo List)

Why? I suffered through it because of Phoenix, but trust me I suffered. What makes you want to watch it?

Anyway, I had a look around and it seems mine will be a rewatch for most of the people who have signed up so far. Maybe even all. There are a couple people I’m not sure about, though. Either way I’m looking forward to reading people’s thoughts on it.

Why? I suffered through it because of Phoenix, but trust me I suffered. What makes you want to watch it?I thought Mary Magdalene (2018) looked interesting when you posted about it in your Joaquin Phoenix movie rating thread. I don't think I've seen a movie about Mary Magdalene before and it seems like an interesting subject.I also usually like movies that have a woman as the lead character. I see it's rated pretty low however, only 5.5, so if I ever do see it I might not end up liking it.

They're probably 85% or more accurate. I keep meaning to thoroughly go through them, but ultimately end up getting tired of looking up all the titles (I am pretty horrible with remembering names), and give up. Maybe one day I'll get through them all haha.

Regarding what you mentioned in your post comment: I was honestly thinking the same thing. It would definitely be a rewatch for everyone, but I doubt anyone would need to watch it again explicitly for this HoF if they didn't want to. If I can't think of anything, I'll probably go with that, or another very similar film.

I might do something a little weird, and nominate a film that I was actually a little disappointed by when I first saw it, but upon further reflection, have come to like a lot more.

I'd prefer to rewatch it first, but if Raul wants to get this HoF started soon, I can just go with it and hope for the best. It's not on any of the lists, so it's hard to judge who has already seen it. I'd creep through everyone's post histories, but the keywords in the title are a bit too generic for that haha.

Inglourious Basterds, my own nom, as I said just rewatched this and loved it.

The Matrix - fantastic movie, will rank highly for me.

Joker - Didn’t like it at all, which was too bad since I wanted to.

I’m not sure if I’ll rewatch Matrix and Joker since I saw both of these fairly recently (Joker Jan 15 and The Matrix Dec 12)... but depending on how tough I find them to rank with the other films I may rewatch.

Mildred Pierce (1945, Directed by Michael Curtiz)

This is actually playing on TCM Sunday, so pretty happy about this one. I liked it the first time I watched it, obviously Rules is thinking of the Noir hall and this is a good pick.

The Last Picture Show (1971, Directed by Peter Bogdanovich)
Nominated by Rauldc14

I didn't like it when I saw it in High School but I was a stupid kid then. I will be watching this one again and paying closer attention. Very intrigued with watching this with I, Donald Blake.

State of Siege (1972, Directed by Costa-Gavras)
Nominated by Siddon

This was my pick, thinking of both the noir Hall of Fame and the film challenge this was shot in Chile based on Uruguay from a Greek filmmaker who is considered part of the French New Wave.

If you are going to do JAB's 2020 challenge this fits a number of categories.

https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=60462

1. French New Wave
2. South America
6. Criterion Collection
4. Marcello Mastroianni/Yves Montand/Paul Newman/Toshiro Mifune
2. a foreign language film

Mildred Pierce (1945, Directed by Michael Curtiz)

This was on my list of future HoF noms like forever, so I thought why not go with it. It's tagged noir at IMBD but it's more of a melodrama, not really a noir. I've seen it a couple of times and it's in my top 10. I also just watched the Kate Winslet mini series Mildred Pierce which was also good.

The Last Picture Show (1971, Directed by Peter Bogdanovich)

Dronningen alternate title is Queen of Hearts, iirc, so if you search for it it may be under that.
Can Neiba make it 3 in a row?
Can Miss Vicky make Phoenix happen again?!
If it wins, will she reenact the famous staircase scene in triumph?

What did you think I was going to nominate?Something that you like and something I seen once and liked at the time, and have been very curious to rewatch. Well one of these HoFs you'll nominate it:p

Have not seen Dronningen or State of Siege, and frankly, they both look awesome. I can't remember if I've seen Shine, so I'm going to watch all 3. I'm a fan of all of the other 7 with my top 3 being Joker, Mildred Pierce, and Blue Ruin. The Last Picture Show would be a wildcard for me. A rewatch could put it anywhere from first to last if I were voting. I should probably see that again anyway. Have fun bitches.

Very interesting line-up this time! I've seen half of these.

As raul mentioned, it's pretty fascinating that so many members chose modern films. Most HoFs I've been in it always seems pretty well-mixed and sometimes very new films are a rarity... And like Siddon said, this indeed does look to be a "bleakness" theme going on. Well, we are all depressed during these coronatimes anyways, so let's go! :p

Mildred Pierce (1945, Directed by Michael Curtiz)
Nominated by Citizen Rules

Casablanca is one of my favorite movies of all time, yet I haven't seen anything else from director Michael Curtiz. Don't know what to think about the plot, but the cast looks great and it seems to be a well respected movie. I'm definitely interested.

The Last Picture Show (1971, Directed by Peter Bogdanovich)
Nominated by Rauldc14

This is already on my watchlist so that's nice. A young Jeff Bridges in what I think was his first ever Academy nomination? Anyways, this one sounds really interesting and I'm looking forward to it!

State of Siege (1972, Directed by Costa-Gavras)
Nominated by Siddon

Never heard of it. But I like crime-ish films, so should be good.

Shine (1996, Directed by Scott Hicks)
Nominated by Edarsenal

While I like the guy, I've never been in a rush to see more Rush, even if I always enjoy him on screen. I really should see more of his work. So yeah, I definitely look forward to see this and it sounds really uplifting and nice.

The Matrix (1999, Directed by the Wachowskis)
Nominated by Thursday Next

I've seen this a couple of times and most recently on November 17th. It's definitely fresh in mind, but I might still rewatch it, since the 4K/HDR disc with Dolby Atmos is an absolute joy!

Inglourious Basterds (2009, Directed by Quentin Tarantino)
Nominated by Ahwell

The film that made me fall in love with Tarantino, though my last rewatch made me lower my score a tad. It's still a fun film though. I rewatched it in January, so perhaps I won't rewatch this either. I know it front to back.

Blue Ruin (2014, Directed by Jeremy Saulnier)
Nominated by Cosmic Runaway

LOVED this when it came out. Haven't seen it since but I've been meaning to. So this is a perfect nom for me!

I, Daniel Blake (2016, Directed by Ken Loach)
Nominated by Neiba

Again, another one from my watchlist. The plot sounds like something I'd like but more importantly I've never seen a single film from Ken Loach. So it's about time eh? Perfect nom once again.

Dronningen [Queen of Hearts] (2019, Directed by May El-Toukhy)
Nominated by MovieMeditation

Well, my own nom... and as it was already mentioned by Wyldesyde19 it is also known as Queen of Hearts. So if you can't find it by its original title, then try that. Anyways, I only just watched this recently but I love to gamble a bit with these HoFs. I want to give people something different or something they wouldn't usually see or haven't seen before. Not that this is a story never seen before, it has quite a few familiar tropes, but the acting on display is fantastic in my opinion. Despite of the familiarity, the acting truly makes this feel hyper-realistic. It's a very raw film in many ways and I love smaller indie films like this that comes out the other side quite powerful. I have one member in mind who might really love this, perhaps two actually... we'll see.

Joker (2019, Directed by Todd Phillips)
Nominated by Miss Vicky

I gave this the full 5 on first watch. I saw it on 70mm film in a big ass theater with Dolby Atmos sound (the biggest of its kind, actually). And while nothing beats that first experience, I still really liked it on a rewatch. For me, it's all about the main performance and his character. This is a movie that tells its story from the inside out. It's all about Arthur Fleck and how the world reflects itself on him. And I like that. I liked it less on a rewatch but I will most likely watch it again to really cement my opinion.

Overall I'm definitely looking forward to this. It's been a while since I've joined a HoF and this looks like a good time. I also kind of like how many of the movies this time is actually quite short. It will be fairly easy to get through them and I'm looking forward to discussing all the movies and seeing everybody's various reactions.

Most of these will be new watches for me. Besides my own nomination, I've only seen two: Last Picture Show and Inglourious Basterds. I had pretty mixed feelings about both of those, so I'll see how I feel about them on a rewatch.

Joker, Shine and I, Daniel Blake are all films I've meant to get round to watching but haven't yet.

Ok, interesting set of nominations!

Mildred Piece - I've heard of it, but don't really know a lot about it. Being a CR nom, I'm expecting it to be great!

Last Picture Show - same with Mildred Piece

State of Siege - never heard of it

Shine - This has been in my watchlist for so many years, and I don't know why I've never got to it. I know enough about it to suspect I'll love it.

Matrix - First watched Matrix 2 months ago, really liked it, doesn't need a rewatch as it's quite fresh on my mind.

Inglourious Basterds - ahwell bringing the big guns! I know this film by heart, it's probably the film that I watched the most, and though it has been losing some magic, especially that middle part, it's still amazing. This will always be high on my voting list.

Blue Ruin - never heard of it

I, Daniel Blake - my nom. Watched this when it came out. It won Cannes so it's obviously a very moralistic film. I suspect europeans will relate to it more but I'm curious to see the reactions from everyone.

Dronningen - never heard of it, but I usually love MM's picks so I may start with this.

Joker - this must be the first time a movie so recent gets nominated. I watched it fairly recently. I thought it was ok but I really don't get the "masterpiece stamp" it gets from so many people. Phoenix is a monster in this, though, and that's half of the film.

Mildred Pierce (1945, Directed by Michael Curtiz)
I don't think I've heard of this one. A quick google search says that it's a film noir, so I'm 100% on board without looking into it any more. I just finished the Noir HoF but am always in the mood for the genre.

The Last Picture Show (1971, Directed by Peter Bogdanovich)
I've heard a lot about this film, but I haven't seen it. His film Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women was a bad recut of my nomination for the Russian Hall of Fame, where they altered the narrative and added footage of sexy women. I imagine this one will be much better than that haha.

State of Siege (1972, Directed by Costa-Gavras)
I don't think I've ever come across this film before. That's not surprising though since I haven't seen many French films anyway.

Shine (1996, Directed by Scott Hicks)
For some reason I know the film's poster, but it doesn't seem like something I would've watched on my own accord. Perhaps I kept seeing it on the shelf of a video rental place?

The Matrix (1999, Directed by the Wachowskis)
This used to be one of my favourite films. I still really like it. I don't remember the last time I watched it; I think it was a couple of years ago. I look forward to seeing it again!

Inglorious Basterds (2009, Directed by Quentin Tarantino)
I am very mixed on this one. I really like parts of it (that intro, and just Christoph Waltz in general), but I'm not really a fan of the film overall. Maybe that'll change upon rewatching it?

Blue Ruin (2014, Directed by Jeremy Saulnier)
My nomination! When I first saw this I wasn't sure how I felt, because I was expecting a completely different film. Over time, I came to realize I appreciated that take a lot more. Rewatching it the other day solidified that. I actually started writing something last night, so I'll probably have my review up soon.

I, Daniel Blake (2016, Directed by Ken Loach)
I watched this at Camo's behest for the Film Awards that year. It was unexpectedly one of my favourites, and I thought it deserved more recognition than it got. It will be interesting to see if the emotional impact holds up on a second viewing.

Dronningen (2019, Directed by May El-Toukhy)
I've never heard of this. With it being a new and foreign film, hopefully it'll be easy to track down.

Joker (2019, Directed by Todd Phillips)
My initial interest in seeing this film was practically nonexistent, and then the trailers came out and looked absolutely terrible to me. The drama surrounding the film was ridiculous, and plummeted my interest into the negatives. It's one of two films I didn't bother watching all the way through for the Film Awards, the other being Uncut Gems which I just couldn't get into. Looks like I've got to watch the whole thing now. I'll try to save this film for when I'm feeling in the right kind of mood to give it a fair shot.

Blue Ruin (2013)
Directed By: Jeremy Saulnier
Starring: Macon Blair, Amy Hargreaves, Devin Ratray

On the surface, the plot of Blue Ruin sounds like a typical revenge story, but anyone expecting a glorified, righteous reckoning in the final act is going to be sorely disappointed. This is a slow, quiet, and methodical film with minimal dialogue, that doesn't attempt to make its protagonist's actions seem justified. He is not a hero, but rather a flawed and self-destructive man who makes a series of bad decisions, and is left to deal with horrific consequences.

Macon Blair is excellent as Dwight. He is alone on screen for a large chunk of the runtime, so his performance is the single most important aspect of the film. Even without many spoken lines, he's able to convey Dwight's emotions and state of mind with his incredibly expressive eyes. He's very believable as a man in over his head, whose every action only digs him deeper into the dirt. Nothing seems to go as planned for him, but he is ultimately the architect of his own downfall.

There are no genre-typical scenes where you cheer for Dwight as he mows down his enemies. Instead the violence in Blue Ruin is quite realistic and brutal. It's meant to be uncomfortable and shocking, even though you know it's coming. The effects looks great, especially considering the low, kickstarted budget. The cinematography is also fantastic, with well framed shots and only a minimal use of the dreaded shaky cam. There are a lot of blue hues throughout the film which help set the mood, but the camera itself builds the most suspense.

I, Daniel Blake (2016)

I, Daniel Blake is one of the most honest and emotionally driven films I've watched. It tells the story of a man who is caught in a failure of the system, the same system who should take care of him. He gets to a point where he's stuck and being forced towards poverty without any fault of his own.
It made me feel infuriated and frustrated in a way a few films ever did, especially because it never seems fake or fiction. Its greatest strength is that it has a kind of documentary feel to it. To that contributes an extremely clever and grounded script, a very straight forward direction by Loach and a cinematography that feels both beautiful and real. There are also very convincing perfomances by everyone especially Dave Johns in the lead. He portrays the descent and incresead desperation of the character masterfully.

Only thing it made me feel a bit unsure was the ending, as it seemed a bit overkill, but apart from that, it's a hell of a fine film, my absolute favourite from 2016 and one I feel it's not talked about enough.

Inglorious Basterds (2009)

This might come out a bit chaotic but I have so much to say about this movie.

I watched Inglorious Basterds when it came out, and I kept going back to the cinema multiple times that couple of weeks. I was a die hard Tarantino fan back then and to me, this was the event of the year. I watched it many many times since then, the last of them a month ago, and I even used it to do a presentation on "sountrack use" to a subject I had in my bachelor. This was in 2015, and part of my work back then was to watch every film IB referenced in some way, especially through the soundtrack. It was also the year I joined MoFo so this film played an important part in me becoming a cinephile.

That being said, my main problem with the late Tarantino films is the balance between epic scenes and some more boring ones. He has been creating some films that are too uneven to be enjoyable as a whole. I have had huge problems concerning that, with Django and especially The Hateful Eight and Once Upon a time in Hollywood, which makes Inglorious Basterds the last film by the man I truly enjoyed.

Granted it still has some problems, especially in the middle sections, the balance between the great scenes and the not so good ones is mostly positive and that's because the film opens with a scene I believe is among the most memorable and well executed in film history (and that's not an exaggeration). Tarantino chooses to open with a long dialogue, as he often does, but this time there's no "what's Like a Virgin about?". He writes an intense conversation that jumps right to the point, and presents the villain at its most menacing moment, rewriting the rules of movie making once again. The acting is obviously top notch especially from this film's greatest revelation: Christoph Waltz, who jumps from french to english to german displaying remarkable accents in all of them while never losing the character and this dangerous aura around him. This dialogue culminates in a moment that still gives me the goosebumps after so many watches. The soundtrack looks like it was written for this movie and the camerawork is astonishing!

While opening a film like that sets the bar very high, Tarantino still finds a way to create an impressive second chapter, introducing the Basterds, lead by a very impressive Brad Pitt. These characters are rough, menacing, violent but they are killing guys worse than them so we find ourselves rooting for them. There are some really funny moments and again another well executed tension bit with the Bear Jew smashing the brains of a honorable nazi general.
Now, at this time the movie is already going to be a favourite of mine, no matter what happens.

In the next chapter we are introduced to Laurent's Emmanuelle Mimieux, the new identity of the girl who ran away in the first scene. This is where I think the film loses some steam. We see a young nazi soldier, that I really never cared about, trying to seduce her while she plans a way to get revenge. The peak of the chapter is Emmanuelle's meeting again with Hans Landa. There's not much happening in the scene but the tension is almost unbearable! I read what I think was the original script once, and if that was legit, Tarantino had the ideia of shooting a plan under the table and show that Emmanuelle peed on her pants with the fear of getting recognized. I'm glad he took it out and we are let as it is.

Then there's the Operation Kino and the tavern scene. The dialogues here are not as cool and the Basterds lose some of that mystiscim but the under the table stand off blows in a spectacular fashion, with a typical Tarantino burst of adrenaline and over the top blood spilling. About the acting, I usually like Fassbender a lot, but here he didn't convince me. I think you need to have a very particular personality to deliver a Tarantino line and he just doesn't have it. We lose Stiglitz though, waaaay to soon IMO as that's probably the only character I felt I wanted to see more from.

Finally, the big reveal, where all the plot lines must come to an end. We get all surviving major characters under the same roof and the film goes from the epic make up scene backgrounded by Bowie's amazing Cat People theme song, to an hilarious Brad Pitt speaking "italian" (and yet another language Waltz dominates), to the tense confrontation between Landa and von Hammersmark. There's also a BEAUTIFUL death scene when Emmanuelle is shot by Zoller, an hilarious shot of Hitler getting filled of bullets and a twist when Hans Landa tries to help the Basterds, who don't let him off the hook as easily as he expected. This final chapter has indeed many terrific bits but some of them are not tied up perfectly and it loses some speed.

Overall, it's a hell of a movie, hugely entertaining and that's what Tarantino ultimately aimed for.
But I always remember what I read about the making off of Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut. When Frederic Raphael started working on the script, Kubrick asked him to send immediately every scene as soon as it was written, which Raphael didn't like very much. After the first scene Kubrick got, he phoned Raphael and told him it was too good. He knew that both Raphael and himself wouldn't be able to keep that level so he prefered to sacrifice a terrific scene instead of the integrity of the film. Kubrick understood that a movie worked as a whole and that should be more than the sum of its parts. This is what I think stops Tarantino from being among the true great directors.
That and a lack of emotional and philosophical depth, which is ok if he kept making style over content masterpieces like he did. It's when he tries to be a grown up that shows he's way over his head.

Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Interesting that based on first reactions people don't love this movie too much. Oh well :/ it's definitely not for everyone. Citizen Rules someday I will nominate something you like:p

On to the review:

Well, I thought I would show my Dad a Tarantino he would like, as well as reminding myself that Tarantino really can be a great director. Although I didn't achieve the former (my Dad was not a fan), I can very much confirm the latter. Tarantino is at the top of his game with Inglourious Basterds - everything is notched up to the highest degree, especially the violence and the gore. We as the audience don't care about the excessiveness since, well, you know, its the Nazis getting their faces shot off and having swastikas carved into their foreheads for once - this is Tarantino giving a giant **** you to evil.

And it's a blast like usual. This and Django Unchained cover the most "serious" of any topics Tarantino has done, and for that reason they are arguably the most controversial works he's put out. Inglourious Basterds actually rewrites history however - the ending is a fine fine turn of events, and while yes it is Tarantino's rage fantasy I think he speaks for a lot of us.

To say that Inglourious Basterds, well, glorifies violence is obviously true. It's not Tarantino making a discreet comment about violence from both sides - he, and we, genuinely believe the Nazis got what they deserved. In fact, this shares clear traits with something like the Indiana Jones series. Tarantino simply notches it up so that there is blood shown, but both franchises/movies ensure the Nazis' asses are kicked in the end.

The dialogue is some of Tarantino's best; from the very first scene we are gripped in the intense plot. And THAT FIRST SCENE. Can we take a moment to appreciate how well Tarantino sets up characters and events? When Landa switches to English, cunningly aware that the Jews under the floorboard don't speak it. When he asks for a glass of milk, only for it to appear later in the meeting between Landa and Shosanna. Tarantino meticulously crafts these plot developments and motives, and we already hate Landa from the very first fifteen minutes.

I love how clear and focused the plot is, as compared to the twisting and turning of Pulp Fiction or the mystery of the Hateful Eight. The goal is simple and clear, and the buildup is even better than the climax. The bar scene gets better and better every time - it's practically Tarantino flexing and showing us just how well he can write characters.

Brad Pitt gives his second best performance (Tree of Life, man) as Aldo the Apache - an ignorant, frankly idiot, violence lusting American who I absolutely love. Christoph Waltz steals the show, however, and won an Oscar for a reason. Every scene with him is Gold, and it helps that Tarantino writes in delicious lines. I love to hate him.

So, yes, I could go on and on. Usually I try to talk about a theme or a message with a film, but with Inglourious Basterds or Django Unchained we're along for the ride, and it's a good ride. Thank God for movies like this!

In the end, Inglourious Basterds is Tarantino at his flashiest, best looking, most fun. Pulp Fiction will always remain my favorite at heart, but Inglourious Basterds might just be his masterpiece. :)

I liked Basterds much more the 2nd time around, but I'd still put it behind Reservoir Dogs, Pulp, Jackie Brown, Death Proof, OUATIH, and Django. I'd have it close to The Hateful Eight and ahead of the Kill Bill movies.

Monsters, Inc. (2001) you liked that one sort of.
The Tree of Life (2011) which you voted last.

So yeah you "sort of" like my animated ones I guess, but I have yet to hit gold with something you love:D

Still, I've seen only three of the nominations (The Matrix, Joker and Inglorious Basterds). I really like the first, more or less like the second and the third is kinda OK. Especially the last HOF. Jagten I wasn’t familiar with, although I realized it was The Hunt after looking into it but still knew little about it other then it was an Oscar nominee for foreign film.
This film was an extremely pleasant surprise and, along with The Salvation (which I know has its detractors, but I enjoyed its simple tale of revenge with a good performance by Mads) has me really looking into Danish films more and more.
Donningen really has piqued my interest.

It's hard to say since it would depend on where everyone placed it, and how its ranking would have affected Dances with Wolves' overall score.

I had The Hunt on my original ballot because I finished before it was disqualified, and I had it at number 1. Dances with Wolves was third on mine, behind The Great Dictator.

Citizen Rules

Here's how I voted in the 13th HoF, I had The Hunt middle of the pack.

1 Dances With Wolves
2 Buffalo '66
3 Manchester By The Sea
4 The Great Dictator
5 Nightmare Alley
6 The Hunt...disqualified
7 Forbidden Games
8 The Three Musketeers
9 Captain Fantastic
10 The Marriage of Maria Braun
11 Wings of Desire
12 The Quiet Earth
13 Flesh and Blood...disqualified
14 Dead Poets Society
15 The Broken Circle Breakdown
16 Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring

rauldc14

I honestly don't remember where I had it. I know Manchester Great Dictator and Broken Circle would have been ahead of it. I would have had The Hunt above Wolves, but if I remember correctly Wolves won fairly substantially

Miss Vicky

I had Jagten at #3 behind Dance With Wolves and The Broken Circle Breakdown.

I wholeheartedly agree.

I’ve seen quite a handful of great and memorable movies because of this. Sure, I’ve gotten recommendations here and there as well as on the forums, but being an a HoF you aren’t just taking the advice you want you’re actually “forced” to watch the movies in the HoF.

Sure, sometimes it’s a huge miss for you and you might even hate a movie and struggle to finish it. But then, when you actually see something you would never watch on your own and you really love it. That’s just such a great feeling. And then having people be passionate about their noms and discuss each other’s films I mean... it’s just great.

neiba
05-04-20, 08:27 PM
I can't say how my ballot would have been as I've watched only half of it, but it would have been hard to take The Hunt from #1 as it currently stands in my top 10 and I didn't love Dances with Wolves!

But yeah, maybe it was a better use of The Hunt a few HoFs after... Though I still regret getting disqualified!

And I changed my mind. If that isn’t asatisfactory explanation to you, and If I must explain it, I will.
Going over the films, I realized that a few could go for a rewatch. Shine has been about 23 years and The state of Siege and The Last Picture Show have been around a decade since my initial view. They could use a fresh viewing.
Second, my main motivation is time available. Work has now decreased my workload finally, and I now have Thursdays and Fridays off for the next month. That’s a whole other issue. But I now have more time to dedicate to this.
I figured I could change my mind since we have a week still to join, and figured “Why not?”
Hence, me joining.

my thoughts on the nominations:

Mildred Pierce (1945, Directed by Michael Curtiz)
Nominated by Citizen Rules It's been a while so it'll be great to see this again.

The Last Picture Show (1971, Directed by Peter Bogdanovich)
Nominated by Rauldc14 This was disqualified when it was in the 70s HoF so I'm glad I'll have another chance to see it.

State of Siege (1972, Directed by Costa-Gavras)
Nominated by Siddon Completely unknown to me, so it'll be exciting to discover

Shine (1996, Directed by Scott Hicks)
Nominated by Edarsenal I was hoping to do a rewatch this before nominating it since I haven't seen it since it came out. But it was the film that opened my eyes to Rush, so. . .

The Matrix (1999, Directed by the Wachowskis)
Nominated by Thursday Next One of my "Countless Watch" films. WOO HOO

Inglorious Basterds (2009, Directed by Quentin Tarantino)
Nominated by Ahwell I am a Tarantino fanboy so, while I know this film extremely well, I'm more than happy to rewatch it.

Blue Ruin (2014, Directed by Jeremy Saulnier)
Nominated by Cosmic Runaway Cosmic films have been quite the journey for me so I'm intrigued to see where this one takes me

I, Daniel Blake (2016, Directed by Ken Loach)
Nominated by Neiba I remember the title and a curiosity regarding this when it came out. And now, lil miss curiosity kitty is getting fed

Dronningen aka Queen of Hearts (2019, Directed by May El-Toukhy)
Nominated by MovieMeditation Looks like this may be on the hard hitting side, but I've been intrigued by MM's past films, so, happy to venture forth.

Joker (2019, Directed by Todd Phillips)
Nominated by Miss Vicky I am very much on the fence about this film even with Phoenix being his usual powerhouse so I'm looking forward to seeing this and how I feel about it.

Genocide (1982Directed by Arnold Schwartzman)
Nominated by Wyldesyde19 Not a documentary fan per se but the subject matter has always intrigued me throughout my life, so I'm very on board to seeing this.

The reason for my uncertainty is like ahwell remarked, from the various trailers and while it looks like a solid film with the usual seriously solid performance by Phoenix, I honestly couldn't decide while viewing them if it was something I wanted to check out on my own accord. Unsure, exactly, the why of it, it just didn't hit me with a really strong desire.

Of course, seeing that Miss Vicky nominated it does alleviate a nice chunk of that uncertainty due to the running streak of films by her I either fully enjoy or completely love from previous viewings.

Interesting.

When I first heard about Phoenix being cast as the new Joker, I was not excited. When I saw the makeup test and set footage, I was not excited. But when that teaser dropped, I thought “holy s***, this is going to be amazing.”

I didn’t quite love it the first time I saw it, close but not quite, but loved it the second time around. It is very dark but it’s not humorless - though the humor is pretty twisted. There’s one scene in particular that stands out to me as being equal parts horrifying and hilarious and I can’t wait to see what you think of it.

I watched Touch of Evil on there too actually, but was even more surprised to see a “lesser known” Welles film on there. I’m guessing there has to be a big Welles fan among the Danish Netflix upper staff. :D

Mildred Pierce (1945)
Directed by: Michael Curtiz
Starring: Joan Crawford, Jack Carson, Zachary Scott

Mildred Pierce is a film noir with a melodramatic character study sandwiched into its centre. It's a strange mix that works better than one would expect. While I'd personally prefer a larger serving of noir, the dramatic aspect is quite compelling thanks to Joan Crawford's performance as the titular character, and an altogether excellent supporting cast. Ann Blyth in particular excels as the spoiled, manipulative daughter, whose complete lack of compassion seems evident to everyone around her.

Mildred loves Veda despite the child's flaws, and it's this love which drives most of her actions throughout the film. She's cautious of the men in her life and their attempts to exploit her, but allows Veda to consistently lead her into ruin. She is otherwise a strong, hard-working woman whose only fault was caring about her children too much. Whether or not this was meant to be commentary on a woman's place in the home is open to debate, but it nonetheless makes for an interesting film.

Most of the story is a retelling by Mildred herself, so the blend of genres makes sense from her perspective. She's reflecting on her past, and her emotions are ultimately going to colour each event. The tragic elements of the plot feature harsher shadows that make them look appropriately darker than her happier memories. The cinematography is of course at its best when it leans more heavily into elements of noir for the introductory scenes, and later for the climax once the flashback narrative catches up to the film's opening.

I'm guessing that you didn't care for Mildred Pierce that much Cosmic? It's hard to tell from your review:cool:

I hope people don't compare Mildred Pierce to other noirs, as a yardstick. The term noir came into use in America much later that the 1940s and when Mildred Pierce was made it was called a melodrama and wasn't directly aiming to be like The Maltese Falcon or any of the more beloved noirs. Probably one of my more popular film omissions, so I was glad to see it get nominated. Seems like it has got a lot of praise, especially with this forum as it ranked quite high on some of the collective lists that we have here.

Overall it's super entertaining. The visuals kept me glued throughout the duration of the film and the environment created by the Wachowskis was fun to be in. The film seemed to really race by and I thought the story was fairly decent too. I wouldn't consider it one of the more innovative Sci-Fis ever but I can see where people would love it.

The acting for me was highlighted by Hugo Weavings performance certainly, thought he did a really good job with his character. The rest of the cast was ok, I'm not the biggest Keanu Reeves fan bit I had no problems with him in this.

Overall a decent start to this Hall of Fame for me. Thanks for nominating this Thursday.

There's probably a ton more of super well known movies I haven't seen yet myself. So many movies, never enough time

I can't tell if you like the film, dislike the film, or are intentionally keeping it a secret from all of us :). Either way, glad to see you are on the board.
I'm guessing that you didn't care for Mildred Pierce that much Cosmic? It's hard to tell from your review:cool:
I actually didn't intend for it to seem so vague, but reading it over now I can see what you guys mean. I liked it quite a bit.

I used to write in a very neutral, essay-like manner, and I think I sometimes default to that when I don't have a clear idea of what I want to say.

Not actually true. I voted my nomination second place in the first Animation HOF.

But it's highly unlikely that Inglourious Basterds will beat Joker on my ballot. It is a top 100 favorite movie for me though, so second place seems likely.

I, DANIEL BLAKE

64197

This was my first Ken Loach. But definitely not my last. ‘I, Daniel Blake’ is a restrained but straining social commentary about the coldhearted cruelty done to a kindhearted man. Unfortunately, that kind heart holds some complications following a heart attack, which forces him to stay out of work but in return work even harder to stay in society. The government is not exactly helpful to someone like Daniel Blake, who suddenly finds himself hopelessly stuck inside a ridiculous societal roundabout that sends him spiraling down through a grim governmental mentality that might end in debt – or even worse – death.

Ken Loach seems to be the type of director who doesn’t try to create the perfect scene… he captures it… seizes the moment. His approach isn’t about artificiality but about allowance – allowing the scene to breathe on its own and restraining from interfering too much, which ultimately proves rewarding… especially the more impactful moments hit even harder because of the even tempo and eased telling of the story. Everything is extremely grounded. There are no obvious build ups, no rapid change in editing and no sudden charge of music. Loach is clearly in complete control of his film and operates almost entirely in the background and lets the foreground establish itself along the way. It is almost like he just lets go of his characters and let them tell the story for him. His confidence in material is sublime, which may not be much of a surprise, considering he has worked with the same screenwriter for more than 20 years.

I honestly really love the storytelling on display here, and it reminds me of directors like The Dardenne’s and Nuri Bilge Ceylan. It is in a way anonymous but never without personality, and you are easily drawn into the film because there are no fancy film elements to distract you from the story and characters unfolding on screen. I loved the unconcerned humor in otherwise concerning situations, as well as the slight satirical absurdity of it all, which ultimately cemented this story as a deeply unpleasant, yet determinedly uplifting journey of a man left behind by society. A regular bloke just trying to get by. Daniel Blake isn’t trying to make an overstatement; he’s merely trying to reach an understanding about how someone can overlook what is right just to uphold what is written. Daniel Blake is the John Doe of our world, representing the everyday man in what is unfortunately an everyday situation for many...

There is so much to take away from this film and I haven’t even scratched the surface… but no matter what I say, I think Daniel Blake himself is the right man to have the final words… "I am not a client, a customer, nor a service user... I am not a shirker, a scrounger, a beggar, nor a thief… I'm not a National Insurance Number or blip on a screen. I paid my dues, never a penny short, and proud to do so. I don't tug the forelock but look my neighbor in the eye and help him if I can. I don't accept or seek charity. My name is Daniel Blake. I am a man, not a dog. As such, I demand my rights. I demand you treat me with respect. I, Daniel Blake, am a citizen, nothing more and nothing less.” Aye, Daniel Blake, aye.

I really thought I had, but looking over her filmography none of the titles stick out. Then again, I am horrible with those haha.

Usually my nom stays in first on my ballot, but not always.
I think I usually end up ranking my own nomination around the middle of the pack, but I know I've ranked it #2 a few times. The Second Chance Hall of Fame was the first time I had my film at #1, though my nomination ended up at the top of my ballot once before, since my actual favourite film from that HoF was disqualified after I sent in my list.

Maybe I need to pick better nominations? haha

I decided to take a look through my voting record. I was correct in remembering that I ranked my own nomination either in the middle, or towards the top (but not usually #1).

11th - #3
12th - #2 originally, #1 after a DQ
13th - #6
14th - #3
15th - #5
17th - #2

30s - #4
40s I - #6
40s II - #6
Animation I - #6
Animation II - #2
Foreign - #2
Japanese - #2
Russian - #3
Sci-Fi II - #4
Second Chance - #1
Shorts IV - #3 and #7

I think the Animation HOF is the only one where my nomination wasn't number one on my ballot. That said though, it's not really a strategic thing. Sometimes it is strategic because the gap between my #1 and #2 movies is slim so I just give the edge to my own pick, but usually it's a very wide margin because I always nominate movies I love so it makes sense for them to be my #1.

We doing this now?:D

18 - #1
19 - #1
20 - #2 (would have been #3 if Rear Window wasn't DQed)
21 - #1

Pixar - #1 (but after rewatching most of the noms I'd change that to #3)
Classic Comedy - #1 and #2
Pre-30s I - #1 and #5
2nd Sci-Fi - #2
Pre-30s II - #1 and #2
2nd Animation - #1
Golden Age Comedy - #2 and #4
VHS Comedy - #1 and #7
Japanese - #2
Western II - #1
Best Picture II - #3

Or we can do a specific Hitchcock hall though it likely needs to be curated more so than nominated for balance and quality. Psycho had already won but I believe their are 21 Hitchcock films that could/should be reviewed and watched.

The 39 Steps, The Birds, Dial M for Murder, Foreign Agent, Frenzy, Jamaica Inn, The Lady Vanishes, Lifeboat, The Lodger, Man who knew too much, Man who knew too much(1956), North by Northwest, Notorious, Rear Window, Rebecca, Rope, Shadow of a Doubt, Spellbound, Strangers on a Train, To Catch a Thief, Vertigo

I know I would definitely be up for a Hitch HOF. I own two box sets of his. One that’s a red velvet like box with many of his classic and a set with his early works, including some of his silent films, like The Lady Vanishes, Jamaica In and the 39 Steps. *

The British Era: 1944 and earlier
The Early Hollywood Era: 1945 to 1953
The Prime Years: 1954 to 1959
The Later Years: 1960 to 1976

Or something like that:p I just did that quickly. There's probably other ways to break his film periods into groups. I suppose to keep it simple just two Hitch HoFs The British Years & The American Years

The problem with a Hitch HOF is his movies are pretty standardly ranked for the most part. Obviously with a decent sample size, Psycho will beat a movie like The Man Who Knew Too Much. Rear Window would be a Topaz. Or maybe I should just shut up and let this move on. Forget what I said :)

The Matrix

Agent Smith: I hate this place. This zoo. This prison. This reality, whatever you want to call it, I can't stand it any longer. It's the smell, if there is such a thing. I feel saturated by it. I can taste your stink and every time I do, I fear that I've somehow been infected by it.

There is a basic movie equation that states that a protagonist is as strong as their antagonist. A good hero needs a really good villain, and with Hugo Weaving playing the unrelenting Agent Mr. Smith
https://qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-030d320fe98b82196daa6d317ee2af4c
who's mannerisms and speech patterns is dead on for the character he portrays is an ideal immovable object for Keanu Reeves' genesis (Neo) and eventual growth into a unstoppable force.

The first in the trilogy of the Matrix films, this is a serious addition to the sci-fi/action genre within a dystopian landscape. It's "bullet time" action sequence being snatched up, copied and even parodied within a few years of its debut in some twenty odd films. Even the name, referencing the facade that blinds us from what is truly occurring has been ingrained into our everyday slang.

The Wachowskis world building, as well as their introduction into that world is quite the adrenaline filled ride with some wonderful sci-fi philosophy giving this stylized film a solid ground to stand upon and reach skyward.
Following Mr. Anderson's discovery, or more accurately, being discovered by the dystopian world and those doing battle within to "wake up" those imprisoned and used as "copper tops" for the IAs who control the Matrix.

From the very first time I stepped out of the movie theater, heart pumping with excitement from the incredible ride I had just thoroughly enjoyed, I've been a fan of this film and the trilogy itself. The action and solid dystopian story line blends extremely well and while some of the wire fighting is a little off (which isn't a serious critique since wire use is a fallible technique in itself) it still remains a powerhouse with excellent primary and secondary characters. Some of my extreme favorites being The Orcacle played by Gloria Foster and Tank (Marcus Chong).

A d@mn good start to an incredible list of nominations!
