You've got to listen to the soundtrack from Somewhere in Time. I don't think it's depressing, just beautiful, but violins can sound kind of sad when you hear them.

Try the soundtrack for The Assassination of Jesse James for the Coward Robert Ford (phew), it's haunting.

definitely chaconne by vitali - beautiful piece for violin, but its also been transcribed for viola.
