Video-wise - I'd check out "Sane Man", but his best stuff is audio only, and not the best quality. "I'm Sorry Folks" is a good video that's on YouTube if you like Bill going after a heckler for half the show... Also, here's one right before his death.

You're welcome, and its my pleasure. I have a "Laugh with Matt" thread with a lot of stand-up, but would be more than happy to give more recommendations, especially after I know what you like and don't like.
Speaking of Bill, there's a show that was just uploaded on his main channel (operated by his brother Steve), although I've heard it on audio. There's some interesting stuff (not funny) - dictating a long road trip for example. I like interviews, to get to know the people.. My favorite is Mort Sahl (with Hicks at #2) but I find this a great interview for 1964, and very relevant for today. It's short and to the point.

Not to turn this into a comedian convo but hell yea Normand is the man. He is my spirit animal lol. He always hollers back on twitter or Instagram, he has liked a bunch of my stuff ha. Him and Tim Dillon are my two favorites going right now with Schulz a close 3rd. I really hope Normand and Dillon get a chance to make their mark on TV like the 90s and 2000 comedians did. But the landscape is changing, they still killers though.
Dillon and Schulz are too controversial, they are on the YouTube/social media/ Patreon path. If Shane Gillis got cut from SNL...
Normand’s delivery is a real thing that has been discussed. He seems to be more of a comedian’s comic, not a big time streaming/network special guy.
Then again, Tommy Buns been doing YMH for years and he got specials. Who knows.

Schulz is getting big enough on his own. He is going after the Daily Show/John Oliver type shows and he is creeping up on them. He has the young people's ears.
That's the reason I like Dillon he has no filter. He has acting chops from a kid. I think he would have got a show easy in the 90s. Liken him to a Roseanne who got her show then. I don't know what he ends up doing but be nice to see him get a chance.
Normand has Seinfeld's praise which helps. I'd actually think Dillon/Normand show would be cool. I hope for the best for all them dudes, I think they are all talented and truly love stand up.

I guess the question is, “How do you quantify success?”. Schulz is huge, he’s the only reason Yanni Long Days got an hour. Are these guys happy doing sets and podcasts, or do they want development deals, etc? I think “hour specials” are close to being extinct, because they have changed so drastically from what they use to be.
Normand’s funny. I get Seinfeld liking him. He’s still a comedian’s comedian. I’ll eat my words if he ever gets any mainstream shine.
Distefano is a step in front of those guys as far a chance to break mainstream, even if Schulz is a Youtube phenom.

Paula Poundstone is hilarious. Try this one, from 1989, but still sooo funny:

And back in the day, Roseanne's standup was pretty funny too.
Lily Tomlin, also good. Rita Rudner, gold.
Generally, though, I love Dangerfield, Steve Martin (saw him twice live back when he was playing college gymnasiums, even interacted with him twice *during* the shows), Brian Regan, and Jim Gaffigan.

Also, this is on YouTube in little chunks, but this whole special is one of my favorites of Paula Poundstone's. Starts with this one (links to the rest are right there and they play automatically). The bit about the lube rack is comedy perfection.

Watched a Rob Schneider special from Salt Lake City on Netflix last night. He's a reasonably funny guy with some halfway interesting material, but if was full of filth and gratuitous language. We made it through the show, but then were shocked when he brought out his family-- including a couple of daughters, one just a small child. I couldn't believe it!

It seems so hard to find standup on Youtube, these were classic suggestions from other videos after I had been trolling for a while.
Mike Young’s energy was really good, his material is nothing groundbreaking. Really like specials like this with “scripted scenes” cut in. All energy with this guy, but I’ll vouch for it.

I've been searching for great stand-up my entire adult life. I've gone to international festivals, and the "amateur" was much better than the headliner I went to previously. I've seen all the HBO and Comedy Central specials, and only found one (Dov Davidoff) who I didn't know before and actually really liked.
I can find a ton of great music (especially on YouTube), movies not as much, but I can only think of about 10 stand-up comedians I like, and I've seen near a thousand. Lately, I get more laughs reading YouTube comments, or those from chat from those I kinda know. And people in real-life I interact with. Then again, I doubt anyone in here knows my favorite, Mort Sahl (despite him being the "Godfather" of stand-up)

Seems like I remember seeing this when it was on CC. Use to get so excited when they would premiere new content after midnight, because they would not censor language.
Dov Davidoff is unique in how high-energy he his, while actually having some depth to what he’s saying. Don’t know if he sidetracked his career or if it’s showbiz politics, he is a talent.

Gary Owen’s #Doin’ What I Do is on Showtime and I had a free-trial. It seems like every bit is on Youtube, just not in one piece.
Have always heard about the “white comic who plays the black circuit”, but I never saw any of his material. I enjoyed it. Anytime a grown man is doing childish voices, I’m in.

Nick Thune had been on a podcast a while ago, talking about his substance issues and how dark his life had got. Looks like he is still above water and I’m guessing this was made afterwards. I enjoy this type of stuff a lot. The tags that he comes up with seem to be his strong suit. Searching for a Doctor’s email to tell him that you know what 🍆 look like, really lands with his delivery.

Well, you know I was a big Mort Sahl fan, as I sort of grew up with him in the late '50s-early '60s. He was unique at the time-- more cerebral and irreverently droll than anyone who came before. Great topical political satire. We could use one of him today. Winters, Shelley Berman and Nichols & May were big then, but none of them did political stuff. Lenny Bruce came along later. Today Bill Burr nicely touches a little bit on even-handed angled political satire, but of course much more animatedly.
Good tip about Dov Davidoff. I hadn't heard of him, so I just watched a clip of his from The Tonight Show. First rate delivery. Having acting chops really helps his story telling. I'll have to investigate one of his hour-long programs.

Mort sorta created a new language, it's quite amazing. Being born in the 80s, I had to do quite a lot of research (which I enjoy anyway) and learned a lot about the zeitgeist of the times, instead of the retrospective ups and downs events of history. I was very proud to meet and talk with him when I took a few 3,000 sojourns to California. We still do have a Mort Sahl now - Mort Sahl! He was working every week to a live audience, and took online questions, until COVID shut down the theaters.. I'll paste the last show from February down below..
Bill Burr is probably the next guy who is still alive, whose podcast is probably better than his stand-up. I've noticed him softening a tiny bit now that he has a wife and kids, but he's still funny and will still talk about the things most are afraid of, but part of that could be that he's grandfathered in. The same with Carlin, and how no one accused him of all the silly-baloney abbreviations, acronyms, and whatever is trendy.
You gotta check out Dov's hour-long special. He's very unique, but haven't heard from him since.
Do you know Bill Hicks? I recommend his non-released stuff on YouTube, especially the longer shows, where he could riff, talk to the audience. Kinda reminds me of a vulgar Mort Sahl.
Doug Stanhope has been kinda dry, but his specials are pretty darn good. Social/political, anti-PC (which is what I like)..... Also interesting is that I just got this 1961 Playboy in the mail (yesterday) with a panel of Mort Sahl, Lenny Bruce, Steve Allen, Bill Dana, Jules Pfeifer, Mike Nichols -- you'd never read something so "on the money" today, so I just keep living before my time, because along with the music and movies, there isn't anything for someone like me.

We did watch one Stanhope special: Beer Hall Putsch (2013). I'm really impressed with the guy's energy and comedic timing. And I do like his near avoidance of language and trite social justice topics. But his material is DARK. His bit about assisting his mother's suicide got too much for my wife, so I shut it off. But I'll check out some of his other stuff. Any recommendations?
Also looking forward to Dov Davidoff's longer routines.

I would start from the beginning.. His last one wasn't very good (kinda like Burr's last two, Louis CK as well) but his first handful were really good. I don't know if I'd recommend watching them all at once, especially if your wife doesn't like the dark stuff..
I've seen him live 3-4 times, and I think his well has gone dry, he also used similar material.. I hung out with him by accident after a show. I took a month-long vacation in Texas, stopped in Chicago to see his show, and after the show, I had nothing to do, so I went to the bar and got a beer, and I hear someone say "Nice shirt, Steely Dan is great" and it was him. He told the bartender he'd buy me the drink, and we got talking about Pink Floyd (he said his favorite song is "In The Flesh", lol) and after a while, he invited me and a few ladies and the opening act to come along to another bar. By 4am, everyone else had departed just outside his hotel room, where he took a piss out on the grass, with multiple police cars a block or two away.. He even gave me this cool book "Amusing Ourselves To Death" (which I unfortunately left in Thailand - another long story), and after finding out my flight was taking off around the same time as his, he offered to give me a ride to my hostel, and then off to the airport we went.
I'm guessing you probably already know Dick Gregory, but his 60/70s stuff was really good, before he got wrapped up with health diet clinics, etc.. Towards his end, he was saying all sorts of crazy stuff, how Obama wasn't going to leave office, lol.
Mitch Hedberg is another good, unique comedian I'd recommend. I usually don't like one-liners, but he was great.

It's great to see the Mort Sahl love. Extremely influential. I happen to be enamored with both his and Lenny Bruce's later forays into political material. They're not standard comic fare, but with Bruce some of my fave LPs are The Law, Language and Lenny Bruce and The Berkeley Concert, despite the poor reputation of that era of his work. Not exactly wham-bam funny, but fascinating stuff for the interested listener. This era also coincides with my fave Dick Gregory LPs like Frankenstein, Light Side/Dark Side and Caught in the Act, which also venture into deep politics. more monologue than straight jokes. It's a shame about Gregory's descent into chemtrail conspiricism, but it could be worse, he could have been Cosby. I kept all of my Cosby LPs as well, but I get too pissed to listen to them anymore. I also love the early LPs of Bob Newhart and Woody Allen.
Richard Pryor is my absolute favorite comedian, but I don't know what else to say that hasn't already been said. Carlin is great, but I prefer his crustier later period to his 70s era, starting around What Am I Doing In Jersey? through to the end. The only poor release was Complaints and Grievances, which we now know was botched due to his having to excise the central bit, "I Kinda Like It When a Lot of People Die" after 9/11, but that's since been released as well. My favorite comedians of the 70s are the more meta ones: Andy Kaufman, Albert Brooks, Steve Martin, Robin Williams.
Has Sam Kinison not been mentioned yet? Unfortunately a lot of comedians are badly dated due to their abhorent attitudes toward homosexuals, but Kinison was a force of nature. Bill Hicks is justifiably legend, and probably the most bootlegged comedian I can think of. Among my 80s faves would be Garry Shandling and Richard Lewis, Louie Anderson and Kevin Meaney. Dennis Miller was excellent before his mid-life crisis. It's worth revisiting prime work by Roseanne Barr and Whoopi Goldberg (respectively I Enjoy Being a Girl and The Spook Show) to remind people how funny they used to be.
Bernie Mac has to be the greatest comedian of the 90s, and I'm not sure how it's even close, unless, again, the "sissy" thing. Dave Chappelle is easily the most electric and compelling comedian working today. Chris Rock has cooled from his early 00s peak. Some more recent favorites would be Paul F Tompkins, Maria Bamford, Dana Gould, Doug Stanhope, Jen Kirkman, Kevin Hart, Bill Burr, John Mulaney.
I suppose most recently I was impressed by Sam Morril. Really solid set.

Do you have to be South African to appreciate him?
Not really. I mean Trevor Noah is from South Africa and he's popular internationally. I saw two of Rob's films as well (a mockumentary about a music band and a popular "joke" character among Afrikaners) and he's pretty funny. But he will be playing a different role in October: he's playing the driller killer in the remake of Slumber Party Massacre.

It gets pretty dark. He did a bit about assisting his mother's suicide, for example. Acquired taste perhaps. I like him ultimately because several of his shows have the effect of rotating between hating the guy and somehow winning me over with a great line. I appreciate the provocation, even if he's a bit of a <unt.

He's in my Top 10... I've seen him four times, and hung out with him and a few others in Chicago.. He was a nice guy, good conversationalist, gave me a great book, and a ride to my hostel and the airport (via taxi, our flights weren't far apart).. However, the last time I saw him live, he was recycling, and kinda dumbing it down. Maybe this is why he's writing books? His stuff on YouTube is sparse, and not necessarily very good, especially the people around him
His first handful of video specials were great, but his last one was the first sign of him going downhill. But he admits he's lazy, so if he thinks he has enough money or doesn't wanna work anymore, more power to him.

I don't guess that Eddie Izzard does stand-up or concerts any more, but his "Star Wars Canteen" bit still remains one of the funniest, laugh out loud routines I've ever seen.
In this vid, the Canteen bit starts at about 2 minutes in, and the first 2 minutes are a nice lead in. This was a small portion of his hour long show from that year's tour.

Going to see Normand in Tampa on NYE. Pumped. That dude is like my spirit animal ha.
Should follow up. Normand set the place on fire. He is fantastic live if you get a chance. Had tickets to see Tim Dillon but had to bail on it :(. Normand, Dillon and Schulz are my favorites right now. Schulz getting to big to see, he is on small arena tour now. I love everything these three do from their podcasts to their stand up. I hope they get a shot at shows or movies if they want to.
Sam Morrill, Andrew Santino, Kyle Dunningan, Shane Gillis, Dan Soder are all good too but I tend to like either their stand up or podcast personalities a little more. Dunnigan and Gillis have amazing skit shows better than what SNL is putting out online.

The Schulz phenomenon is lost on me. I’ve tried multiple times but I think it’s an age gap think.
Tim Dillon is great, but I had to give up because of the stuff he talks about. Not really a lot of bright and cheery stuff. Fake Business will always be one of the funniest bits I’ve ever heard.
Gillis. His videos prove the SNL gig.
Soder is one of the best riffing, but his material is not the strongest.

Bill Burr just released one. I'm not really into 20 minutes in, but musicians also have a 10-15 life. Almost like when musicians play their music in another key because they don't have it anymore.
I either need to laugh inside or out, but he seems to have said it already on his podcast, which must be watering down comedy. Maybe I'll smoke another joint and hopefully it picks up.

I think “hour specials” are close to being extinct, because they have changed so drastically from what they use to be.
Can you elaborate? I'm not sure, because for me, they're not what they used to be in terms of quality (laughter - inside or out) and I watch less and less. It seems like the podcast form, where a guy sits for hours talks mostly nothing, but a few funny parts, mixed in with stand-up.
Another part is the live comedy shows or festivals. I quit going after the last couple shows (Stanhope, CK) were full of audience members who were drunk and/or kept screaming. If you miss half the act, you're not going to get the punch-line, what's going on.. No different than the movie theater where people are talking, phones going off, but then I'll watch Mort Sahl from 2002, a show I've seen a dozen times, and laugh every time, and usually discover something I didn't notice the time before. Hell, even in his 90s. But he was never the type of comedian to hold back. "Are there any groups I haven't offended?"

My thoughts go to the all-time specials. Stuff like Delirious and Bill Cosby: Himself. It just came across larger than the sum of its parts. An event. It’s theater. An energy.
The Kyle Kinane special that nobody watched is the best thing I’ve seen in recent memory. Every premise in that special is A material that he has multiple tags for. It doesn’t stop. But it still feels like a club set for lack of a better term. The new Segura special was one of his better ones and it’s still forgettable.
Comedy’s changed and I realize that my opinions are formed by these old specials. So it’s definitely me. At the same time, a lot of these people are selling friendship through their podcasts and their material is not getting worked over. Why sweat catching the check drop set when you make $20,000 a month on your pod. Normand gets a lot of respect for how he still grinds in light of not having to.

Eddie Murphy was the first comedian I saw.. Me and a friend (having just graduated) had the house to ourselves, got a case of beer (despite only being 17) and had quite a laugh, but we rented "Raw" on his recommendation, and then rented "Delirious" a few days later, and thought that was even better. But because he only had those, I still needed more, and would watch anything, and got into Dave Chappelle. Then while searching on Kazaa Lite, I saw "Bill Hicks - Great Time On Drugs" and thought "how audacious!" who led me to Mort Sahl.
Bill Burr was doing advertisements in the middle of the show, and yeah, they're much different. It was twice as long, but should have been twice as short, but it was like he was on my couch, shooting the shit.

I saw him live twice toward his (our) end, and he was very bitter, but I don't blame him.
"Jammin' in NY" is my favorite video special, but I love his earliest work. The Burns & Carlin Playboy album is on YouTube, too... And even attempting to do an impression of Mort Sahl (while impossible) is quite an accomplishment.

Saying that SNL is dead is nothing new. Part of me feels like it can be people age, tastes change, crap on the young generation.
Now it feels slimy and dirty. When they fired Shane Gillis over stuff he said in the past, there was a lot of moral high ground stuff used in addressing it. What do you say when you bring him on to host? “Oops, our bad”?
I support people having convictions and standing by them. Just make sure you toe that line after you draw it.
“Where you get them chheeee, Danny!?!”

I haven't seen much stand-up since I was a teen, but back then I would watch Comedy Central routines with my friends. The most memorable one where we laughed hardest was Mitch Hedberg and then there was that skinny older tripped out New Yorker guy with the long curly hair who also appeared on Letterman a couple times. He was so mellow but so funny.

Attell is always put at the top of the mountain, at least by the NY comics.
Someone was telling a story about the comic’s table at the Cellar. Sandler came in and sat down at the head of the table. Everyone was happy.
Attell comes in to one of the bars on the other side of the room. Sandler hops up and starts going, “Dave! Dave!…”. In true Attell fashion, he turns and sighs, “What is it Adam?” 🤣

Reminds me of a story when Don Rickles told Frank Sinatra that he would be showing up to a restaurant with a special lady and to come over to the table later.. When he did that night, Don said, "Frank, can't you see I'm busy here?"

I surprised my #1 on our trip to Charleston last year by seeing one of her favorites.
He had the worst opener I’ve ever seen. Got a stern comment from the guy in the 4th row behind us for my “appropriate” heckling. Proceeded to stare at the most beautiful women in the world and emote in protest.
Then Regan came on and everything in the world made sense. One of the best nights in my life.
I took a split second photo of my favorite at Doar Bros. that they posted to their ____.
Didn’t find Bill Murray.

I liked him. You're right, he is like Steven Wright and I love that stream of consciousness type of humor, going immediately from one subject to the next. I looked up Demetri Martin on IMDB after watching the clip you posted and I can't believe he's the same guy who played the lead in the film Taking Woodstock (2009). He was really good in that. He's been in several other movies but I haven't seen many of them and the ones I have, I don't remember him in them. But there's one I have to see, and that's Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022) where Martin plays Tiny Tim. Gotta see that! I sense it will be perfection. Anyway, Captain, thanks for the heads-up about Demetri Martin---I'll definitely check him out in other stuff.

I like Bill, but I notice when comedians get married and have kids (and when the angers subsides) it makes the well go dry quicker.
Even his last special only had one bit (but one of his best) - taking magic mushrooms.
I can't remember the b&w special he did, but I thought it was the best. I should watch chronologically sometime.

As far as living comics, I honestly haven't watched enough of them to make much of an informed opinion. I like some of Bill Burr's stuff, and Chris Rock has some funny bits, but they don't even come close to the three I previously listed IMO...
