Same as was done for March and June.....

Join in and drop out as you please
No set number of nominations
Nominate on the fly
Max song duration: 10 minutes
No individual matches - no random or host 'fixing' the matches
Only one nomination per person per 'round'
Only those with songs nominated in any 'round' are eligible to vote; except the 'Final' where all those that have previously nominated a song in the month may vote should they wish

Every couple of days will be a new 'round' where any and all newly nominated songs are up against each other. As soon as voting starts for one 'round' nominations will be accepted for the next 'round'.

Players vote by ranking all the songs in that 'round' from 1 (their favourite) to n (their least favourite). Songs will be awarded points based on their positional ranking in each vote (number of points will depend on the number of songs contesting the 'round' - if 10 songs #1 song would get 10 points, #10 song would get 1 point).

The winning song from each 'round' (or songs in the case of a tie) goes through to the 'Final' at the end of the month.

Winners of previous 'rounds' are ineligible - Alice in Chains - Would?
Beethoven - Symphony No. 5, Movement 1
Betty Davis - Anti Love Song

great start with some excellent songs

ROUND 1
Johnny Cash - Cocaine Blues
India Ramey - Devil's Den Gotta score high for this one, simply because it's unknown and how much I enjoyed it and will be looking into more from this lady
David Bowie - The Pretty Things are Going to Hell Did NOT expect this to rock as much as it did. Excellent surprise
Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love A standard and always enjoyable
Woven Hand - Bleary Eyed Duty very intriguing. Had a kind of ghost of Johnny Cash vibe going on that I liked
Gladys Knight & The Pips - Neither One Of Us a sweet torch song
Frankie Avalon - Venus a wonderful song from my childhood and should have scored higher if not for the songs above.
Aretha Franklin - Wholy Holy We are SO going to church on this one! And I'm going to hell for letting the Queen of Soul score so low.
LIVE - Lightning Crashes I've always liked this one and much like Venus the only reason it scored low is due the great songs beating it out

Carole King - So Far Away (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=umvblNSqt2s)

George Strait - If I Know Me (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VvN4ThH66AY)

Captain Spaulding

Round 1

1. India Ramey - Devil's Den
(I've been listening to Ramey's album, Snake Handler, quite a bit lately, and this is one of the standout tracks. Alt-country steeped in Southern Gothic; Flannery O'Connor-inspired songwriting. Each track delves into the dark recesses of the deep south with lyrics that deal with domestic abuse, alcoholism, drug addiction, dead-end futures. Sprinkle in some religion and voodoo and you've got the running themes of the album. Judging by the views on YouTube, Ramey's far more obscure than I realized. Obviously it's not a matter of talent but just lack of exposure.)

2. Johnny Cash - Cocaine Blues
(The definition of outlaw country. Love the mirthfulness despite the dark story being told.)

3. Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
(Essential Zeppelin. Also one of the best tracks to test surround sound.)

4. Gladys Knight & the Pips - Neither One of Us
(Many people can sing well, but hitting the right notes and conveying the full emotion of a song is far rarer, and this is a song with 100% feeling. They call it soul music for a reason.)

5. LIVE - Lightning Crashes
(One of the very few songs I enjoy from this band.)

6. Frankie Avalon - Venus
(Not my cup of 50's tea, but a pleasant listen.)

7. David Bowie - The Pretty Things Are Going to Hell
(A rather forgettable Bowie track.)

8. Woven Hand - Bleary Eyed Duty
(Kept hoping it would switch gears at some point, as I'm not really a fan of the muffled, lo-fi singing. Not a bad song, though, just better suited for passive listening.)

9. Aretha Franklin - Wholy Holy
(Aretha's pipes are legendary, but I've never particularly enjoyed listening to her music. Too many runs, too much over singing . . . despite the ginormous talent, her voice usually starts to wear on my nerves after a bit, as it did here. How 'bout a little R-E-S-T-R-A-I-N-T?)

Round 2

1. The Highwomen - Highwomen
("Highwaymen" is one of the greatest country songs of all-time, and while this feminine remake obviously isn't on the same level, I think these ladies do a magnificent job honoring the original, keeping the same structure and making callbacks with the lyrics, while still providing a fresh, modern spin on a classic. Plus their voices complement each other really well.)

2. Revere - I Won't Blame You
(Cool song. I love how the music steadily builds intensity, teasing a full release at times only to recompose itself, yet madness wins out at the end as we're spiraling out of control.)

3. Lacuna Coil - Blood, Tears, Dust
(A welcome injection of heaviness. Especially dig the contrasting vocals.)

4. Eric Strickland - Standing in the Headlights
(Very solid country tune. Sounds like something that would've been a hit two decades ago.)

5. Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 2, Movement 2
(Classical music isn't at all my thing, but this piece took me on a nice little journey with its ups and down and dramatic flourishes and dainty little touches.)

6. Carole King - So Far Away
(A classic, but for me it's never struck an emotional chord … or a piano key, I should say.)

7. George Strait - If I Know Me
(A little too standard for me.)

8. Beastie Boys - So What Cha Want
(Outside of a few tracks, I find the Beastie Boys more annoying than enjoyable.)

Round 3

1. Concrete Blonde - Tomorrow, Wendy
(I like/love everything I've ever heard from Concrete Blonde, so I really should dive deeper into their catalogue. Their music sounds very ahead of its time to me. Especially love the mood they create.)

2. Peppino Gagliardi - Che vuole questa musica stasera
(Part of me wants to rank it last for being such a pain in the ass to spell, but the music itself is quite beautiful and full of character and feeling. Booking a flight to Italy now.)

3. The Pretty Reckless - Going to Hell
(I'll save you a seat, darling!)

4. Faith No More - Falling to Pieces
(Dude has such a distinct voice. Depending on my mood, I either find it annoyingly whiny, or uniquely compelling. Today I find it a bit of both, but that bass is groovy.)

5. Slipknot - Snuff
(A much softer sound from Slipknot than I'm used to hearing.)

6. Don Williams - I'm Just a Country Boy
(I'm just a country clown.)

7. Mark Lanegan - Strange Religion
(Not bad, but I wish it had kicked into a different gear at some point as the sound gets too monotonous after awhile.)

8. Sazz Leonore - Too Darn Hot
(The original link was unavailable to me, so I went with this (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ck9wz06cA3A) instead, which has a whopping 2 views at this point! Anyways, decent little jazzy number, but there's something very artificial about it that I don't like. It made me think of noir-themed episodes of sitcoms, where characters are donned in fedoras and pinstripe suits and the women are all pouty and whatnot. I get the same sense here, with a singer pretending to be something she's not, playing dress-up with her music instead of her wardrobe.)

9. Nas - The World is Yours
(Admire the verses. Hate the beat and the chorus.)

10. Beethoven - Symphony No. 5, Movement 4
(I think I'd have a greater appreciation for these classical pieces if I was watching an orchestra perform them in person, but in a song tournament they don't do much but bore me.)

Wasn't really feeling this round, to be honest.

Great list of nominations, IMO.

1. Mark Lanegan - Strange Religion
I hate voting my pick first against some of the options available, but I guess my age is a factor in what I listen to most now. It is what it is.

2. Faith No More - Falling To Pieces
Love Faith No More! The Real Thing album is maybe my second or third favorite from FNM. Had this been another track it could have easily been my #1 pick. Still a tough call as it is.

3. Concrete Blonde - Tomorrow, Wendy
A favorite band of the ex's so this one holds a bit of sentimental value more than other noms of the round. Too, great smokey vocals are always sexy.

4. Peppino Gagliardi - Che vuole questa musica stasera
Tough pick over Sazz Leonore. While I prefer the jazzy style of Too Darn Hot, I found the way her vocals sit in the mix too distracting to really enjoy the song as a whole. Her voice lacks dialogue with the band and unfortunately sounds overlaid against a muted backing track. It sounded most obvious during the sort of scat back-and-forth in the last third of the track. Shame really, as her voice is truly lovely. I suppose my #4 is less about what it is and more about what my #5 wasn't. If that makes sense?

5. Sazz Leonore - Too Darn Hot
Beautiful voice! See above comment for ranking preference.

6. Pretty Reckless - Going To Hell
Fun song that feels out of time. This would have felt right at home during my GnR, Motley Crue, and Extreme days :)

7. Nas - The World Is Yours
Was never a fan of Nas but hearing the style definitely took me back.

8. Beethoven - Symphony No. 5, Movement 4
Sad to say that two years of music theory totally burned me out of classical music. Nice to see Beethoven on the list though.

9. Don Williams - I'm Just A Country Boy
Never was a fan of Don Williams and openly opposed most country music in my youth having grown up in rural Alabama. But I believe him to be authentic. Perhaps another track of his might have ranked higher.

10. Slipknot - Snuff
Maybe it's a generational thing but I've never understood the attraction to Slipknot. I've had younger friends follow them near religiously but I could never seem to catch on. To me, Slipknot is their genre's equivalent of Phish. Both seem to have a massive fanbase, but I just don't get it. =D

Totally agree. I love his voice but most tracks this album don't build. It definitely can get monotonous.

Oh it's not at all hate. Just I never could get into them. People love them. I don't =/

Part of that may be my first introduction to them and noticing their theater. Masks and such seemed more for attention than their music. I've always looked at them as a novelty act for it and never really heard anything new in their sound. I mean put Mike Patton's percussive vocals in front of Korn's bass-heavy rhythms and there you go. Five years earlier. Not that I was much a fan of Korn either, aside from a few college cover band efforts.

Just not my thing. Even less so as I get older.

Faith No More - Falling To Pieces - I nominated this because I've just re-discovered it.

Pretty Reckless - Going To Hell - If you're gonna do rock, do it more like this.

Beethoven - Symphony No. 5, Movement 4 - I'm not much of a Beethoven man, but this has always been something I liked to listen to. Probably because it was the first of his symphonies I listened to in its entirety more than once.

Concrete Blonde - Tomorrow, Wendy - I like the feel of this. Very 90's.

Nas - The World Is Yours - This has a nice groove.

Sazz Leonore - Too Darn Hot - A nice bouncy little number to start us off. I like it, but it I agree with those who feel something isn't quite 'right' with it. I think the Captain sort of came to a similar conclusion, but I think I probably like it more than he did.

Mark Lanegan - Strange Religion - I quite like the mood and feel and, if I knew the lyrics I might feel it more? But I don't and as this is my first listen to it, I think it's doing ok.

Don Williams - I'm Just A Country Boy - Meh. It's not offensive or annoying enough to hate. It exists and finishes quickly.

Slipknot - Snuff - About 15 years ago I might've liked this a little more than I do now, but it just has that noughties nu metal sound I have never been a fan of. If it was shorter it'd be a place higher.

Peppino Gagliardi - Che vuole questa musica stasera - Now this feels more authentic. It's just of something I don't really care for.

Not a one I did not enjoy and the eclectic sojourn of this list was a pretty entertaining one

ROUND 3

Concrete Blonde - Tomorrow, Wendy A band I've loved and YET to really delve into. This, along with their rendition of Everybody Knows, they are both huge favorites of mine. So much so, I listened to a couple of them as I started on this.
Elevating it above my pick:

Pretty Reckless - Going To Hell The entire band is just "spot on" "balls out" serious f@ckin musicians that I've thrived on. Their musical growth over the span of their albums as been a f@ckin joy to listen to.
Oh, and GODD@MN!! the incredible visuals in their videos!! A nocturnal fest of visceral ecstacies.
Idiot Translation: "ShLt's f@ckin hot, man! Uh. . . like, you know, in a, like, artistic kinda hot shLt. Ya know?"

Beethoven - Symphony No. 5, Movement 4 Ahhh, an "ACTION" piece by the Lemmy of Classical Music.
I've wondered, when I listen to this, especially referring to the initial movements, if, that being deaf, such precision and depth created here, could be due to "feeling" the thunderous pulses. The scattering of higher strings that rise to a harrowing gallop is but rest points as we traverse to the next pounding. Such would, I imagined, assist Beethoven when performing such a piece. To physically feel the throbbing pulse of the music.
And, it's f@ckin awesome.

Peppino Gagliardi - Che vuole questa musica stasera Reading the previous reviews, I agree with the comparing of this, and "Too Darn Hot". This is authentic, TDH is commercialized.
I can envision the smoke-dense dives, where the soul of this song rises from. Having enjoyed such songs in, very much, such environs and loving it as if within a warm hearth.
VERY VERY nice.

Faith No More - Falling To Pieces Was on the fence with these guys when they came out. Did enjoy them as a warm-up to a Guns & Roses and Metallica concert I went to at the time. For the hits and misses of their songs for me, this is very much a hit and only resides here due to the songs above.

Nas - The World Is Yours Got up and threw shapes on this un. Hell and Yeah.

Don Williams - I'm Just A Country Boy Traversed back to childhood, sprawled out on the carpeted floor scarcely a few feet away from the screen, transfixed to Hee Haw.

Sazz Leonore - Too Darn Hot Another I feel bad about such a low position. And while some of it is the family-safe roots of this, it definitely does the trick for it. I do not disagree on that point.

Mark Lanegan - Strange Religion Another I enjoyed, though, honestly, I don't feel as bad regarding its placement. A great tonal, yet even-leveled traverse. This is simply walking forward from one insignificant point to a disinterested one. For me, it is the change-ups that make for a more adventurous voyage. (See those above in ascending order.)
Do NOT dislike, enjoyed the simple meander, but those above are there and it is here for said reasons. I state out of honesty, not cruelty.

Slipknot - Snuff I did get a chuckle out of ynwtf 's statement (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=59972&page=4#) regarding not quite understanding the pull of this band. Solid band. But, like ynwtf; never got connected to it. Have enjoyed the few Stone Sour tunes I've come across and for a quieter song from Slipknot, it is a good one.

Guns N' Roses - Live And Let Die - IMO GnR managed to give us three of the best cover versions out there. I'd argue that a couple of them (this and Knockin' On Heaven's Door) are better than the originals, though I respect the opinion of anyone who says otherwise. I'll be stunned if this isn't my #1 pick. I do try and keep stuff like this from the top of my lists (as do quite a few of us who've done many of these tournaments, usually more successfully than me) but there are times when I just have to bow down.

The Heimatdamisch: Sweet Child o' Mine (Guns n' Roses) - I was sure this wouldn't do well, but really, it's such a good cover and, well, damn it, it just needs to be experienced at least once. :D

Etta James & Sugar Pie DeSanto - In The Basement, Part 1 - A nice start, but this list will have to be pretty poor for it to be near the top of my list.

Wanda Jackson - Fujiyama Mama - This was kinda fun. Something about enormous exploitations in Japan in the 50's just seems... Well, not quite right for such a trite, if fun, song.

Frank Sinatra - My Way - I like this song (most of us do) but feel it's done. I wrote more, but decided it might be best not to post it.

Gateballers - The all = poem - This quickly became background music to me, but pleasant background music. I'm pleased it was a couple of minutes long rather than six. It might've found itself lower had it been.

Pink Floyd - Time - *Sigh* Not a fan. At least it was one of their better songs.

Joe Walsh - Rocky Mountain Way - I can't say this really does much for me, but it's not shaping up to be a good round for me. It's something I hear and not something I'd listen to.

Joe Diffie - A Night To Remember - Just not my thing.

ROUND 4

1. Guns N' Roses - Live And Let Die
What's left to say about GnR? Great double-album release with their Use Your Illusions 1 and 2. This probably wouldn't be my first choice of theirs for a song tournament, being a cover, but it was still branded well enough by their sound.

2. Etta James & Sugar Pie DeSanto - In The Basement, Part 1
Fun song. I enjoy the style well enough but would prefer a bit more variety over its play. I think it falls victim to some of the repeat hook trappings from its time, but still a very solid track. I wonder if it ranked higher for the variety it provided in context of the other songs from this round?

3. Gateballers - The all = poem
This was my pick for the round. A relatively random find shuffling through Spotify, I enjoy the simple groove of it. The mix is clean and everything sits where it should. There's enough variety through the track to keep my attention but I agree with honeykid that it would suffer if it ran longer. If you like this at all, then give Autolux a try. Gateballers are kind of a softer, watered-down version of them. Sorta.

4. Frank Sinatra - My Way
The Chairman of the Board, Frank-the-tank Sinatra. (I added the tank part cuz I watched Old School a few weeks ago). I've never really been a fan of his music but there is something to be said of his staying power and influence.

5. Joe Walsh - Rocky Mountain Way
Also not a fan, but the song is solid. Was this in the Heavy Metal soundtrack? If not, it would fit in right around the scene where the John Candy-voiced robot was snorting cocaine off the mothership floor...

6. Wanda Jackson - Fujiyama Mama
Wow. Just... wow. I'm kind of surprised that this track didn't make the Kill Bill I soundtrack. Silly song and makes sense for the time, but I'm cringing a lil hoping no one can hear this through my headphones at work! lol.

7. Joe Diffie - A Night To Remember
Country isn't my thing at all, but I get the inclusion. It's a solid country song with the right sound for its purpose.

8. Pink Floyd - Time
Aside from just not being a fan of Pink Floyd, I think this track would probably work best if heard in context of the album as a whole. Without the investment and progression of the titles before and after, some songs just don't stand alone well for me.

9. The Heimatdamisch: Sweet Child o' Mine
Great cover and a fun novelty track, but it did wear out its welcome pretty early on.

Round 4

1. Wanda Jackson - Fujiyama Mama
(Vintage rockabilly from an absolute firecracker. Also fun to imagine how much of an uproar this would cause if released today. #CancelWandaJackson. The lyrics might be culturally insensitive, but the Japanese made this song a huge hit back in the day.)

2. Guns N' Roses - Live and Let Die
(Sometimes it feels like GNR are the most popular cover band of all-time. Considering how little music they recorded together, a disappointingly large percentage seems to be covers. This, "KOHD," "Sympathy for the Devil," the Live Like a Suicide EP, the entire Spaghetti Incident album, and that's not even factoring in concert staples like "The Seeker" and "Whole Lotta Rosie." However, as I say every time they're nominated, GNR is my favorite band, and I much prefer their version of "Live and Let Die" over the original, as they inject the perfect dose of attitude and muscle into McCartney's tune.)

3. Pink Floyd - Time
(I've heard this countless times in my life, but I've never stopped enjoying it. If anything, I like it more as I get older, and as someone who thinks to himself, "Where did the time go?" at least once a day, the lyrics feel more poignant with each setting sun)

4. Frank Sinatra - My Way
(Hard not to feel distinguished any time this classic plays.)

5. Joe Diffie - A Night to Remember
(I would've hated this when I was younger, as it's the embodiment of the corny country that I found so lame as a teen, and which my mom seemed to listen to all the time. But tastes change, and I actually found myself liking this tune quite a bit as it went along.)

6. Joe Walsh - Rocky Mountain Way
(A bit played out for me, but that guitar sound is something I'm naturally drawn to.)

7. Etta James & Sugar Pie DeSanto - In the Basement, Part 1
(The link wouldn't work for me, so listened to this version (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PKSSsbjztlY) instead. Curious to hear it with Part II since this song ended just as I was starting to get into it.)

8. Gateballers - The all = poem
(There's something oddly indistinguishable about this song. Listened to it twice and still unsure what I think of it.)

9. The Heimatdamisch: Sweet Child O' Mine (Guns N' Roses)
(A mixture of LOL and WTF.)

Thank you. He seemed to be feeling a little better today, but he's on meds that make him sleep a lot, so it's hard to talk to him and find out much about how he really feels. But they're talking about moving him to a rehab facility within the next few days, so hopefully that's a good sign.

Round 5

Fine Young Cannibals - She Drives Me Crazy - I love this song and have done since release, so it walked to first place here.

Kobra And The Lotus - Black Velvet - It misses Alannah's voice, but it's a good song and a good cover.

P J Harvey - Rub 'Till It Bleeds - Ah, PJ. Never really became a fan, but often liked much of what I've heard.

Stravinsky - Rite of Spring "Clap-along" - Something stronger and more direct? That's more like it today.

Brother Dege - Too Old to Die Young - Still a bit too country for comfort for me, but ok for one listen.

Valerie June - The Hour - Nice enough but even this short it became a little trying.

A Day To Remember - If It Means a Lot To You - Pleasant enough before going off in the last third.

Secondhand Serenade - Your Call - Listening to this makes me think I might not be in the best headspace for this today. But I don't have time for it tomorrow, so I'm going on. It sounds quite 90's in a familiar way, but not one that pleases me much.

Bob Dylan - The Ballad of Hollis Brown - Not a fan,

Alan Jackson - Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning) - Sorry, but I this really is the kind of mawkish stuff I just can't bear.

1) Alan Jackson - Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning) - I live only a few miles from New York City, and I remember 9/11/01 like it was yesterday. After watching the events on TV from the very beginning, (before the first plane hit the first tower), and seeing the second tower fall, I drove to my in-laws house on Long Island, and I almost got hit by a fire truck that was rushing to the city. I nominated this song to make sure that those of us who were around back then Never Forget, and those of you who weren't can hopefully understand how that day affected the rest of us.

Round 5

1. Bob Dylan - Ballad of Hollis Brown
(Love those rustic-sounding Appalachian strings. Impossible not to visualize this song being performed on the ragged front porch of a cabin deep in the mountain woods, a shotgun leaning on the splintery wooden banister, an ominous dusk spreading over the treetops. A perfect example of Dylan's unrivaled songwriting skills.)

2. Stravinksy - Rite of Spring "Clap Along"
(Man, that was intense and dramatic. Made my heart accelerate. Sounded like I was facing the final boss in an epic video game or something.)

3. Valerie June - The Hour
(Not super familiar with Valerie June, but I've had this song stuck in my head since recently hearing it for the first time. Love her soulful, bluesy voice, and the jazzy-pop tempo.)

4. Brother Dege - Too Old to Die Young
(I've come close to nominating this great song from Django Unchained several times in the past.)

5. PJ Harvey - Rub Till It Bleeds
(This song sounds like it just woke from a five-day bender, reeking of booze and sex and urine, hair matted with sweat, vomit crusted on the side of its face. Then it staggers up off the floor, grabs a guitar and the nearest half-empty bottle of liquor and resumes where it left off. Count me in.)

6. Fine Young Cannibals - She Drives Me Crazy
(I've always dug this song, although I can never remember the artist.)

7. Alan Jackson - Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning
(I don't think any American will ever forget where they were when the news of 9/11 broke. I was a freshman in high school. Needless to say, no assignments were given that day, as the TV in every class was turned to the news. I had numerous classmates who would eventually go on to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan.)

8. Kobra and the Lotus - Black Velvet
(Solid cover, but it just makes me want to listen to the superior original.)

9. A Day to Remember - If It Means a Lot to You
(Was about to rank this below "Your Call" since it has that same wimpy, emo vibe I hate, but with a weaker chorus. Fortunately the last minute of the song saved it.)

10. Secondhand Serenade - Your Call
(Too wimpy and emo-sounding.)

Minus those last two songs, this was an exceptionally strong round.

I love the song I nominated, so there's not much there to say. I love that Dylan can/could write such great songs in different ways. Comparing this song to something like "Visions of Johanna" makes me think that Dylan has a legitimate claim at the best songwriter of all-time.

I am a big fan of Valerie June. She's beautiful inside and out, and I love the way she brings country music together with soul and blues.

That PJ Harvey song makes me think I need to start listening to PJ Harvey. I'll echo the Captain's comments on it, it feels really goshdarn dirty and nasty like brushing sawdust off the back of your long unconditioned hair because you woke up in a lumber mill with a hangover for some reason.

"She Drives Me Crazy" is good and memorable with a killer chorus. Not much else to say.

That Secondhand Serenade song makes me want to say some politically incorrect things about it. I'll refrain.

The Stravinsky piece is made for cinema fiends like us. I want to chase/be chased with this playing. Ducking into canals and alleyways. This would work well in a space movie too. Gimme some X-Wings shooting at some TIE Fighters to this and the new Star Wars movies will be a million times better. (A million times zero tho...)

A Day to Remember, a song to forget. La la la. The chick sounds better than the dude tho. La la la la la la.

"Black Velvet" sounds a lot better with Alannah's rough voice. This isn't bad or good. It's just kinda there.

I think Alan Jackson meant everything he said in this song and I think he really wanted to get this song out. I know South Park has ruined this song, but at this point in my life, it's hard for me to hate on Alan Jackson for this song. I don't really know how to rate this song. I'm old enough to remember 9/11, but young enough to where perhaps I don't understand the true emotional toll it had. I do hate when people sh*t on people who turn to their faith to help them cope with traumatic events though.

If "Too Old to Die Young" is in Django Unchained, I've heard it... I just don't remember it. Been awhile. That said, I love this God vs the Devil and I'm caught in between type of stuff.

(I heard some song recently that name-dropped a bunch of red-dirt country artists. All of them I was familiar with except Brandon Jenkins. Decided to look him up and I've loved what I've heard so far. There's no re-invention here, just tried-and-true, Southern-bred, authentic, earthy country. I had no idea he was dead until I saw the comments on this video. Apparently he died of some heart condition at age 48. That sucks, but he had a 20-year career and multiple albums, so there's still a ton of music for me to comb through. Curious to hear if jiraffejustin is familiar with him and, if so, which songs/albums he recommends the most.)

2. Swedish Hitz Goes Metal - Money, Money, Money
(Well, that was fun. Goofy and entertaining, but very technically skilled as well. Quite the vocal range by the young blonde Shampoo Commercial Meat Loaf.)

3. Bobby Womack - Across 110th Street
(Feel like this has been nominated a ton of times before, but it's a fantastic song, so who cares. Always think of Jackie Brown when I hear it.)

4. Big Pun - Twinz (Deep Cover '98) ft. Fat Joe
(Some of the rhymes in this made my head spin.)

5. Dope Smoker - October
(Ride the fuzz.)

6. Junior Kimbrough - I'm Leaving You Baby
(About three years ago or so I became really interested in traditional blues, immersing myself in the music of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf and Lightnin' Hopkins and the like. For whatever reason I haven't been listening to that stuff lately, but this has caused the itch to flare back up. Simple song, not a lot to it, yet like all the best blues music, there's something so genuine and cathartic about it.)

7. Dvorak - Symphony No. 9, Movement 1
(Not crazy about the length, especially as it gets so quiet at times, but it's obviously a fantastic piece of music. As I keep saying, I'm not into classical music, but I do seem to enjoy these pieces that are very dynamic, very dramatic, going through multiple highs and lows and basically providing a movie for the imagination.)

8. Ricky Van Shelton - Living Proof
(A bit vanilla for me, but the dude has a smooth voice.)

9. José Feliciano - California Dreamin'
(There seems to be something about this song that lends itself easily to reinterpretations. Love the Mamas and Papas original, and I've heard multiple covers that I've really enjoyed as well, but not a huge fan of this version.)

10. Tears for Fears - Head Over Heels
(Never cared for this band.)

I'll be out of town this weekend, so I'm going to skip the next round. I'll jump back in early next week.

ROUND 6

Bobby Womack - Across 110th Street
(Wanted to nominate this one later on, but Ed beat me to it.)
Dope Smoker - October
Big Pun - Twinz (Deep Cover '98) ft. Fat Joe
(It has one of the best / the best bar ever written in it. Overall I like the original '92 version better.)
José Feliciano - California Dreamin'
Tears For Fears - Head Over Heels
Ricky Van Shelton - Living Proof
Brandon Jenkins - Down in Flames
Swedish Hitz Goes Metal- Money, Money, Money
Junior Kimbrough - I'm Leaving You Baby
Dvorak - Symphony No. 9, Movement 1

Captain Spaulding I am not familiar with Brandon Jenkins' music, but I remember seeing an article about his death. I wouldn't have known it was him if he didn't have such a distinct look.

1. Big Pun - Twinz (Deep Cover '98)
2. Junior Kimbrough - I'm Leaving You Baby
3. Swedish Hitz Goes Metal - Money, Money, Money
4. Dvorak - Symphony No. 9, Movement 1
5. Brandon Jenkins - Down in Flames
6. Jose Feliciano - California Dreamin'
7. Bobby Womack - Across 110th Street
8. Dope Smoker - October
9. Tears For Fears - Head Over Heels
10. Ricky Van Shelton - Living Proof

"Living Proof" is a little too smooth and clean for me. Dude can clearly sing, but I prefer something with a little more edge. I need to ask my dad if he likes RVS or not, I can't remember. To be fair though, I used to think of Keith Whitley the way I think of RVS, so who knows what type of re-eval I'll give him in the future.

I KINDA like "Head Over Heels" because the dude sings in a weird way and he has a weird face/head/teeth combo with nearly the same haircut as my brother. Coming in at almost five minutes, this starts to drag early.

Bobby Womack is dope. "Across 110th Street" makes me wish I was at least a little bit black.

I really didn't expect to care for Jose Feliciano's cover of a song that I've grown tired of a long time ago. I dig it though, and I should probably go ahead and see OUaTiH.

Swedish Hitz Goes Metal? lololololol I love this. I don't even know what to say, this is wild and fun and awesome. This track came from nowhere and off the top rope for sure.

I plan on diving into classical music pretty soon, but I think I am going to get into more chamber stuff and sonatas first. I don't have a problem with the bombast you get from symphonies, but I think prefer the more subdued and intimate music you get from much smaller numbers of players. That said, it's hard to ignore the accomplishment of getting a group of people together and make something that sounds as epic as the movement from Dvorak.

When I heard Brandon Jenkins' voice, it was not I expected. I thought I was going to hear somebody that sounded like Whitey Morgan. It might take me a few tries to get used to it. Instrumentally, I can't complain. Lyrically, it doesn't feel like anything new or challenging. That's not necessarily a bad thing. I'd take this over modern radio country any day of the week. I'll have to check more of this guy out. As far as Texas and Oklahoma country goes, he's got stiff competition from the people I prefer. I don't think he reaches the same level as a lot of those dudes. But being second-tier to guys like Cody Jinks, Turnpike Troubadours, and Randy Rogers is nothing to be ashamed of.

F*ck. Just pump "I'm Leaving You Baby" straight into my veins. That guitar is filthy. And it has the best album cover I've ever seen.

As far as my nom goes, sometimes I just love listening to rappers just getting bars. How do these two fat guys even breathe while they get these complex bars?

Smoke weed everyday.

Good round, nothing I hated. I'll be sitting the next round out too, as I'm spending the weekend with my dad and siblings.

Bobby Womack - Across 110th Street - I love this. It'll go above my choice and will probably be my #1 here.

Swedish Hitz Goes Metal- Money, Money, Money - Probably my favourite ABBA song and I really like Swedish Hitz Goes Metal (I was thinking of nominating Roxette's The Look which I recommend)

Junior Kimbrough - I'm Leaving You Baby - Old blues, baby. Nice.

Big Pun - Twinz (Deep Cover '98) ft. Fat Joe - Nice flow. With more listens I might rate it higher.

José Feliciano - California Dreamin' - A great song done ok.

Dvorak - Symphony No. 9, Movement 1 - I like it, but it's just not for this kind of thing for me.

Tears For Fears - Head Over Heels - Nostalgic, but not one which has every really got me. It's ok and familiar.

Dope Smoker - October - Love the guitar, but it went on far too long for me.

Brandon Jenkins - Down in Flames - I don't really have anything to say here.

Ricky Van Shelton - Living Proof - We all know by now I don't care for country, but this doesn't offend my ears, it's just there and thankfully short (though still too long for me :D)

ROUND 6
Bobby Womack - Across 110th Street serious SEEREEOUS soul! muh brutha
Ricky Van Shelton - Living Proof This one sort of caught me out of nowhere with such an easy feeling
José Feliciano - California Dreamin' I had completely forgotten about this soul filled gentleman from the 70s and he gave so much life to a song I had grown tire of, he just HAD to score high for it
Junior Kimbrough - I'm Leaving You Baby It's da BLUES and dat's all you gotta say baybee
Swedish Hitz Goes Metal- Money, Money, Money schlock. But damn good schlock
Dvorak - Symphony No. 9, Movement 1 Epic. Purely epic.
Brandon Jenkins - Down in Flames Really enjoyed this but a few songs beat it out
Tears For Fears - Head Over Heels Never cared for this when it came out but it was fun to hear it again.
Big Pun - Twinz (Deep Cover '98) ft. Fat Joe Not much to say
Dope Smoker - October Do love a good buzz, but since I'm not buzzed presently, it did suffer for it

George Michael - Kissing a Fool A truly wonderful surprise. When jazzy lounge singing is a beautiful thing. I swear there are times when I catch a song like this from Michael and I feel so sorry for the sh#t rap he got.

Jeff Carson - Not On Your Love Soft, gentle, relaxing sad song.

1. Nick Drake - Three Hours
Deserved so much more recognition for his music in his short life.

2. Bill Withers - Use Me
Well obviously. Just a great pop funk. Gives me an idea for a possible nom...

3. Leslie Clio - Told You So
Lovely voice and catchy hook. Agree that it repeats a bit much but such is the style. I imagine she doesn't open for Adele for fear of taking the audience away.

4. Mahler - Symphony No. 5, Movement 4
Not much to say but still glad to see this though it sits low on my list.

5. George Michael - Kissing a Fool
There are a few George Michael tracks I enjoy but this isn't one if them. Classic 80's blur of pop musical styles where nothing stands out for me.

6. Jeff Carson - Not On Your Love

Princess Chelsea - Monkey Eats Bananas - Sometimes I like weird but it soon gets annoying. For some reason this hasn't. To the point where I've checked out other stuff by her and like that too. Obviously I didn't nominate this to win, but if some of you did like it (or didn't hate it) I'd recommend checking out her other stuff. It's not all like this. :D

Di*Ove - Gaze - I dont' know if I like it more because there's that Bowie sound to his voice or whether I'm punishing it for it?

Eric Burdon, War - Spill the Wine - This should be right in my wheelhouse, but it's not quite there for some reason. Still, mellow and a nice bass sound.

Jim Croce - Operator .. (alt if needed) - Nice and short, it felt quite nice to listen to.

Dvorak - Symphony No. 9, Movement 3 - This just existed for me today. I'm afraid I wasn't into it at all.

T. Graham Brown - I Tell It Like It Used To Be - This stuff just passes through my ears. It's not unpleasant, but pointless for me.

6.Eric Burdon, War - Spill the Wine
(Typically I'd be into its funky, lazy, sunny 70's sound, but today I'm just not feeling it. And I'm rarely into songs that are mostly spoken instead of sung.)

7. Peppino Gagliardi - Sempre, Sempre

My apologies.

Both you and ynwtf are of course welcome to rejoin by throwing a nomination into this thread whenever you desire.

As yin is involved I guess I should add that nominations after the Final is put up won't actually enter anything though - so dropping a nom here in November (for example) might prove rather pointless ;)

I can't believe I got a win with Princess Chelsea.

Airlock - Face Down - This has a really nice vibe. Very mid/late 90's trip hop. I don't know the song at all, but it's smack bang in the mood I'm in today it might well beat my own choice, which is something I've not known for very long.

Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 2, Movement 1, Part 1 - I just love Tchaikovsky. So much of his stuff is instantly likeable and just gets better with familiarity.

Colorama - Baby Don't Go - It's such a nice simple sound. It can't go on for too long because it because it'll become background music, but while it's here I enjoy it.

Metallica - Wherever I May Roam - So familiar but so good.

Sacred Reich - Manifest Reality - A lot of thrash metal sounds the same to me, but that's not that bad a thing. Screaming guitars and heavy percussion is welcome.

Steve Wariner - Some Fools Never Learn - Not my sound as we know, but in another round this would've done better.

Round 9

1. Sacred Reich - Manifest Reality
(It seems like the majority of songs in this tournament have fallen on the slower, softer side, including my own nominations, so I felt the need to inject some thrash metal into our collective veins. Full-throttle intensity. Wake up and rock out. Unlike most metal songs, the lyrics here are surprisingly life-affirming.)

2. Metallica - Wherever I May Roam
(Not one of my go-to Metallica tracks, but still a kick-ass, head-banging good time.)

3. Steve Wariner - Some Fools Never Learn
(As with most of gbg's nominations, this isn't quite my brand of country, but there's a comfort level that makes for easy listening.)

4. Colorama - Baby Don't Go
(Sorta forgettable, but I appreciated its mellow vibe.)

5. Airlock - Face Down
(Pleasant enough, but nothing about it stands out to me.)

6. Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 2, Movement 1, Part 1
(Just not what I'm in the mood to hear this afternoon, and it seemed to last an eternity.)

This isn't as much fun with so few people participating. :(

Nah, it's far too cool a tune for some crappy James Bond titles sequence. No idea what movie it might be tbh, I generally don't really watch the videos when listening to music but did look this time and it's not ringing any bells for me - looked like a fairly generic actioner.

1. Billy Preston - Will It Go Round in Circles
(Excellent first-time listen that had me groovin' in my chair.)

2. American Aquarium - Losing Side of Twenty-Five
(Musically this isn't all that interesting, but it's all about the lyrics for me here, which I find highly relatable, even to the point of it name-dropping the chain of grocery stores I worked at as a teen.)

3. Stone Temple Pilots - Plush
(I think fondly of STP, since I remember them being all over rock radio in the 90's, and hearing them automatically conjures memories of summer days spent outside playing basketball and drinking Kool-Aid as a kid as the radio blared nearby.)

4. Come - Yr Reign
(Made me think of Nirvana, but that might partly be because I kept mistaking the "reign me" line for "rape me.")

5. Vern Gosdin - That Just About Does It
(Familiar, comfortable country sound.)

6. Mahler - Symphony No. 5, Movement 5, Part 1

Some of our comments have me thinking of a song tournament variation. Imagine this format but mixed with Survivor style rules and game play!

You create tribes tricking your group into liking their song betting on the idea that the final tribal counsel might vote their song off, leaving yours in the running. If you find hidden Billy Idols in the forums you can save your song from a vote off.
