Who was that directed at? It's based purely on opinion. There is no flat-out, dead-ringer, best guitarist ever.

I hear you, but I think "players" like Neil Young, Jack White, Thurston Moore, Kurt Cobain, Johnny Ramone, are on the other end of the guitar playing spectrum.

The funny thing is, I enjoy all of their music.

Yeah, I know what you mean..I was just curious as to who you had directed that comment at. I agree, none of those you just mentioned (Kurt Cobain, etc) are good guitarists (IMO) but they all have pretty good music in general. ;)

I love the playing of so many guitarists, so it's hard to make a list, but I guess I'll just throw one out....

Steve Vai (extremely precise and generally very creative)
Alex Lifeson (underrated)

I like many others....

Glad to see him get mentioned.

A master, and to think that this guy had to relearn how to play after his injury (his left and was burned and he was left with just two completely mobile fingers on that hand).

The first time I heard him I thought he was amazing.

Then my friend told me he only played with two fingers.

I assumed it was his pick hand.

When he told me it wasn't, I almost stopped playing guitar.

I can't even pull his stuff off with four good fingers.

Talk about overcoming adversity!

I think best bass players should be a seperate topic and not stuck at the back of the greatest guitar players thread.

In some bands, The Red Hot Chili Peppers for instance, the bass player is clearly the best musician in the group.

Here's my list anyways;

The greatest bass player in my opinion is Stanley Clarke.

He's not one of my favorites though.

Favorites;

Les Claypool

Chris Squire

Steve Harris

Lemmy Kilminster

Tony Levin

Flea

Geddy Lee

Tom Araya

John Entwistle

I like Fieldy, but not Korn

Jimi Hendrix

Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave
Bo Diddley
Lou Reed
Angus Young of AC/DC

I cannot believe some of the names on this list. Many of you have no clue what a good guitarist is.
There are a lot of 'good' guitarists. No question. You have to be good to be a mainstream rock artist. But there are definitely great guitarists, and you have all forgotten the best.

Duane Allman.

Not to be outdone by these other truly great not just good musicians, most of whom were mentioned.

Jimi
Django
Jimmy P.
Mark Knoffler

The rest, are just that... the rest. These 5 are the greatest.

Amen.

I felt Kurt was a sub-standard singer, but an extremely gifted songwriter. Many of the greatest songwriters in rock were sort of shoddy performers, and many didn't like having to be in the public eye, Cobain included (according to Rolling Stone anyway). Other examples would be Bob Dylan and Billy Corgan (hey, the guy can write a song).

As for greatest gutarist, I am finding it pretty much impossible to choose one person. I will list some guitarists whose music moves me, but I don't know if they are great, I just love the way they play.

Dave Gilmore (he was closest to being chosen)

Jimmy Page - I have a complaint. On my original cassette copy of physical graffiti, IMO the pinnacle album of Zepp's career, and maybe in the history of blues/rock, Kashmir was at the end of the album, followed immediately by Bron Yr Aur, an amazing drop C acoustic piece that is just magic. This was one of my favorite pieces of music for a very long time, both tracks, one after the other. I go to buy the cd, and they have changed the track order. It's a travesty I tell you.

Jimi Hendrix - The man.
