Same as was done for March.....

Join in and drop out as you please
No set number of nominations
Nominate on the fly
Max song duration: 10 minutes
No individual matches - no random or (as in some cases) no host fixing the matches
Only one nomination per person per 'round'
Only those with songs nominated in any 'round' are eligible to vote; except the 'Final' where all those that have previously nominated a song in the month may vote should they wish

Every couple of days will be a new 'round' where any and all newly nominated songs are up against each other. As soon as voting starts for one 'round' nominations will be accepted for the next 'round'.

Players vote by ranking all the songs in that 'round' from 1 (their favourite) to n (their least favourite). Songs will be awarded points based on their positional ranking in each vote (number of points will depend on the number of songs contesting the 'round' - if 10 songs #1 song would get 10 points, #10 song would get 1 point).

The winning song from each 'round' (or songs in the case of a tie) goes through to the 'Final' at the end of the month.

Winners of previous 'rounds' are ineligible - Alice in Chains - Would?
Beethoven - Symphony No. 5, Movement 1
Garbage & Screaming Females - Because The Night
Guns N' Roses - Paradise City (WINNER - MARCH 2019)
Guns N' Roses - You Could Be Mine
Jinjer - Pisces
Metallica - One
Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
Sam Cooke - Nothing Can Change This Love
The Bangles - Hazy Shade of Winter
The Moody Blues - Nights In White Satin
The Sisters of Mercy - Lucretia, My Reflection
Thin Lizzy - Emerald
Wisdom - War of Angels

Simples but if any relevant questions just ask.

1. Joshua Ray Walker - Lot Lizard
(I think JJ either nominated or messaged me a song from this dude before, but if so the song didn't really make much of an impression on me. Well, this one certainly did. Dude has the range of a hound dog. That may not sound like a compliment, but I mean it as one. Good lyrics as well. The genuine article.)

2. Slipknot - Unsainted
(I've never really given Slipknot their due, probably because of dumb high school associations (the kids who were obsessed with them were the same ones rocking KoRn t-shirts just a couple years earlier, and the mask thing also seemed like a stupid gimmick), but I haven't been able to get enough of this song since first hearing it. I think it's time I put aside biases and dive into their back catalogue.)

3. Wolf Alice - Blush
(Vulnerable and pretty. I can see myself listening to this again. Thank God someone in the comments clarified that the person in the video isn't the actual singer, because I was very confused at first.)

4. Killswitch Engage - Holy Diver
(As a big fan of Dio's version, I was ready to write this cover off, but they did just enough to make it their own while still saying true to the original. Also I'm just in a metal mood at the moment. The video was also very entertaining, parodying all those nerdy, cheesy 80's metal music videos.)

5. Electric Youth - Tomorrow
(I always enjoy this nostalgic, 80's-inspired synth sound.)

6. The James Gang - Walk Away
(I've heard this song many times on the radio, but never knew who it was by.)

7. Ludovico Einaudi - Nuvole Bianche
(Makes me want to take piano lessons.)

8. Martin Delray ft. Johnny Cash - Get Rhythm
(Much prefer Cash's original over this hillbilly stomp cover, but Cash's involvement at least keeps it close enough to the real thing.)

9. Johnny Mathis - 99 Miles From L.A.
(A driving song that threatens to put people asleep behind the wheel. Despite being a bit sleepy for my tastes, it's still a pleasant/chill listen.)

10. Beethoven - Choral Symphony, End of Mvt. 4
(I recognize the liveliest part, around the 3-minute mark, from many shows/movies, usually as the backdrop for something comedic like a slow-motion food fight.)

Liked every song to some degree.

Round 1

Johnny Mathis - 99 Miles From LA - I don't think I've heard this before, but it instantly worked on me. After about a minute or so I was thinking I might have this above my own choice. Which is the only one I knew I knew before listening.

Wolf Alice - Blush - I've only recently found this band and haven't listened to much, but this grabbed me straight away. Even if it's the only song of theirs I end up really liking, I know it'll be around for a long time with me now. If you do like this, I'd also recommend Moaning Lisa Smile. That's the other one I thought of using but went with this one.

ELECTRIC YOUTH - Tomorrow - I liked this but it's one note and outstayed its welcome. Had it been a couple of minutes shorter I'd probably think better of it.

Slipknot - Unsainted - I think I have this so high because a lot of this round was quite mellow and, well, I've just had a really rough few days.

Beethoven - Choral Symphony, End of Mvt. 4 - It's Beethoven. He does big and overblown really well. The rest is just... nice.

The James Gang - Walk Away - Pleasant, easy 70's listening with a hint of country.

Ludovico Einaudi - Nuvole Bianche - Is nice. Sounds like we all went for something pretty subdued and mellow.,

Martin Delray & Johnny Cash - Get Rhythm - It's country, but it's not really annoying. I wouldn't choose to listen to it, but that's OK.

Joshua Ray Walker - Lot Lizard - More country but not horrible. I think if I was in a better mood I might enjoy it a bit more.

Engage - Holy Diver - Even when I really liked Iron Maiden, those middle albums of the 80's weren't my favourites and part of that was because of this kind of thing. I thought it sounded like a Dio cover even before I found out it was. :D Just not my thing.

Round Two

1. Turnpike Troubadours - Gin, Smoke, Lies
('Cuz all I smell is authenticity and great f**king music.)

2. Lynyrd Skynyrd - That Smell
(One of my favorite Skynyrd tunes.)

3. Santo & Johnny - Sleepwalk
(Crazy how just a few strings can evoke such emotion and imagery. Like being transported back in time courtesy of a steel guitar. Just wish the song was longer!)

4. Megadeth - Addicted to Chaos
(Enjoyed this a surprising amount given my typical indifference toward the band and my general dislike of Mustaine.)

5. Carla Thomas - (I'm Afraid) The Masquerade is Over
(I love the wide range of music that's being nominated so far. This song is pure class.)

6. Pusha T - Come Back Baby
(The sampling of George Jackson's soulfulness really helps to elevate this. Also: can't hate on a song that namedrops Ric Flair.)

7. Redbone - Come and Get Your Love
(Another song that I've heard countless times but never knew the artist. A definite mood lifter.)

8. Vanic - Save Yourself (ft. Gloria Kim)
(Not terrible, just not a style of music that ever does much for me.)

9. Neil Diamond - Remember Me
(Neil Diamond =)

I'd be willing to argue for that Troubadours' song as a top ten country song of this decade. Maybe top five. I love it. Those dudes are kind of local legends around here. I hope Evan gets his life in order and they can keep making music.

The Runaways - Cherry Bomb - I didn't expect a song to be nominated which would beat this one for me, but Champaign got a lot closer than I expected. I'm not a big fan (I barely know any of their stuff) but this song has always been fantastic.

Champaign - How 'Bout Us - I've always liked this song but never knew who it was by, so thank you whoever nominated it (too lazy to look back:D) this was a nice interlude in my day. :)

Brother Cane - Got No Shame - Well that was a rocking good time. Thank you.

Michael Romeo - Fear of the Unknown - Fast and punchy. It doesn't go on too long. I like it

Symphony X - Electric Messiah - This is on the outskirts of my wheelhouse, but I like it. These always seem to be a little too long, but other than that I'm happy with it.

William Clark Green - Ringling Road - I quite liked this. Not sure if it's something I'd listen to again and again, but it passed its time nicely and didn't outstay its welcome with me.

Ryan Bingham - The Weary Kind - More emotive than the following, so goes above it this time.

Maddie & Tae - Die From a Broken Heart - Radio-friendly country. Light and inoffensive.

Jean-Michel Jarre - Fourth Rendez-Vous - Familiarity and the fact it's short means it just finds itself above next place.

Enamel Animal - Unfaith - Maybe it's just my mood today. It's ok, but it's just kind of there. Turns up a little after a few minutes, but even then it's just the same. Maybe it's just because I'm unfamiliar with it?

Round 3

1. William Clark Green - Ringling Road
(I haven't liked anything else I've heard from this guy, and I don't necessarily think this song is great or anything, but it's impossible for me not to dig it given the various elements: a circus theme, substance abuse problems, a noir-ish intro, a coda that spirals into madness, a video that circles around a dead clown . . .)

2. Enamel Animal - Unfaith
(I love how this song continued to morph and change as it went along. At first I thought it was going to be a whispery, ambient piece; then the guitars suddenly come to life. Just as I thought it was going to be an instrumental, the vocals start. What began as sleepy background music had me banging my head by the end. Impressive. Never heard of this group, but judging by the video views, neither has anyone else.)

3. Ryan Bingham - The Weary Kind
(Pretty sure I've nominated this in the past. Sound quality feels a bit off in the link, but it doesn't take away from the song. Love the sparseness that's like a western desert. It really puts the emphasis on the emotion and the lyrics.)

4. The Runaways - Cherry Bomb
(I wish we had chicks with this level of spunk and attitude in the mainstream today.)

5. Champaign - How 'Bout Us
(Pretty smooth. The type of song that slow dances the listener while subtly grabbing two palmfuls of butt cheek.)

6. Symphony X- Electric Messiah
(For the most part, this song didn't do much for me, but that guitar solo was killer.)

7. Maddie & Tae - Die From a Broken Heart
(Solid, radio-friendly country. I feel that the emotion/lyrics are undermined by such an upbeat approach. Or maybe that approach is meant to speak on the ability to get over such heartbreak. Either way, it doesn't quite work for me, but it's a pleasant listen.)

8. Brother Cane - Got No Shame
(Not bad, and I can listen to this type of rock all day, but sorta generic/forgettable. I dug the emphasis on the harmonica, though.)

9. Michael Romeo - Fear of the Unknown
(Love the ferocious pace and instrumentation. Hate the singer's voice.)

10. Jean-Michel Jarre - Fourth Rendez-Vous
(Felt like the intro to a song more than anything.)

The Hillbilly Moon Explosion - Call Me - Blondie's version is one of my favourite songs and I only recently found this version. Thought it was a great cover. If you like the style but not the cover, try a few of their others. I'd recommend Down On Your Knees or Motorhead Girl. Nice version of Chick Habit too.

Horse Party - Animal - I like this. It's my kind of thing.

Texas Hippie Coalition - Moonshine - I liked this, but a little too heavy on the country feel by the end for me.

Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman - So mellow and familliar. No problems here.

Pretty Reckless - Make Me Want To Die - Pretty sure this has been nominated. That's good though, cos I like it. :)

The Clash - Rock The Casbah - I like this song, but I don't like The Clash anything like as much as so many others.

Dionne Warwick - Don't Make Me Over - Honestly, I don't know if I could name a Dionne Warwick song that wasn't a cover. Had it not been for Whitney, I don't know if I'd have known who she was at all. :o It's ok, though to me, it sounds pretty much like every other song which sounds like that from back then.

Dan Seals - Addicted - What is it with all the country? Still, not too bad but fairly plodding and down.

Round 4

1. Texas Hippie Coalition - Moonshine
(More southern metal than southern rock. A party song for redneck headbangers.)

2. The Pretty Reckless - Make Me Want to Die
(I've yet to hear a song from The Pretty Reckless that I loved, but I've liked most of what I've heard from them, and I like this more than the average. I'll always have a soft spot for female-led rock.)

3. Horse Party - Animal
(I dig the fuzzy, garage-band sound, and I'm sure I'd enjoy it even more if I wasn't a bit hungover at the moment.)

4. The Hillbilly Moon Explosion - Call Me
(A fun twist on Blondie's original. I've nominated this group before and likely will again.)

5. Dionne Warwick - Don't Make Me Over
(Agree with honeykid that the song sounds a bit same-y compared to other such songs from the era, but it still boasts a magnificent vocal.)

6. Dan Seals - Addicted
(Not exactly my brand of country, but I just love that the genre has been heavily represented so far in this tournament.)

7. The Clash - Rock the Casbah
(An overplayed classic.)

8. Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman
(Never been big on Glen Campbell.)

Jeffrey Osborne - On The Wings Of Love - Now this is a song I love. Thank you.

Dorothy - Raise Hell - Only found this when I was playing in the last tournament. After looking for stuff like the Screaming Females/Garbage combo and this was possibly my favourite. There were a few others which I was going to nominate, but I'll probably do one of those next.

Dream Theater - Untethered Angel - Very technical and a good example of the craft. Like most of this stuff, it goes on for longer than I'd like, but this one didn't outstay its welcome.

Quix*O*Tic - Lord of this World - Is it just me or is there more than a hint of early Black Sabbath's here? ;):D It's good though.

The Cramps - What's Inside a Girl? - I very nearly nominated something from this band, but went with Dorothy as I'm pretty sure I've nominated the other song before. I like them, but even at 3 minutes I'm usually tiring of it by the end.

Thornetta Davis - Cry - This is ok. At least it's got a little something to it. Nothing's really grabbing me today. :(

Breaking Benjamin - So Cold - Noughties rock sounding very much like Noughties rock. Meh.

Johnnie Ray - Bury Me Out On The Lone Prairie - Just not my thing. Inoffensive enough though.

Charlie Rich - The Most Beautiful Girl - I'm just to mehhed out to comment now. Sorry.

Bob Dylan - Maggie's Farm - I just don't get Dylan.

1. Dream Theater - Untethered Angel - I haven't like a record from these guys since the early 90s, but their latest is actually pretty good. They have finally dialed back the mind-numbing noodling.

2 Breaking Benjamin - So Cold - Best tune from these guys.

3. Dorothy - Raise Hell - I have never heard this, but I like it!

4. Quix*O*Tic - Lord of this World - Gritty. Good stuff!

5. Thornetta Davis - Cry - This could easily have been in 4th, but it slipped to 5th in the end.

6. The Cramps - What's Inside a Girl? Lux!

7. Charlie Rich - The Most Beautiful Girl A bit overplayed, but a classic nonetheless.

8. Johnnie Ray - Bury Me Out On The Lone Prairie - Tolerable country song.

9. Jeffrey Osborne - On The Wings Of Love - A little too far into the elevator music realm for my taste.

10. Bob Dylan - Maggie's Farm - Still can't stand this guy.

Ok, read the rules. Let me know when to jump in. :)

Round 5

1. The Cramps - What's Inside a Girl?
(If my brain had a soundtrack, it'd probably sound something like this flirtatiously sinister tune.)

2. Johnny Ray - Bury Me Out on the Lone Prairie
(My affinity for westerns means I also have an affinity for cowboy songs such as this.)

3. Thornetta Davis - Cry
(Was loving this for awhile, especially in the first half when it shows a lot of restraint, but I felt like the song lost some of its individuality once the rock elements took over. Still a good song.)

4. Charlie Rich - The Most Beautiful Girl
(Classic country.)

5. Dorothy - Raise Hell
(I've heard this somewhere before, perhaps on a TV spot or something. Rock with female vocalists always seems to appeal to me, even when the song is average. I'd say this is slightly above average. Moderately catchy, but I don't think it's dynamic enough to survive multiple listens.)

6. Bob Dylan - Maggie's Farm
(Love Dylan, but this is one of my least favorites from his well-known stuff. I feel like his voice is at its most grating here.)

7. Dream Theater - Untethered Angel
(I have a lot of respect for Dream Theater as musicians, but that respect rarely translates into outright enjoyment of their music. This is no exception.)

8. Quix*O*Tic - Lord of this World
(Not terrible since it has the backbone of Sabbath, but this cover feels too disjointed and messy. Those transitions are jarring.)

9. Breaking Benjamin - So Cold
(Too generic.)

10. Jeffrey Osborne - On the Wings of Love
(Too lame.)

Round 6

1. Floorman - Crazy Boy
(Nice vintage sound and a welcome change-up from what I'm used to hearing in these tournaments. Makes me want to don a pinstripe suit and fedora.)

2. Opeth - Windowpane
(I've yet to listen to an Opeth album in full, but over the last 2-3 months I've been listening to a lot of random songs from them. They took awhile to win me over, but I'm becoming a fan. In order to fully appreciate them, though, you have to pay attention to the music. Put on headphones, close your eyes and let them take you on a journey. I'm no musician, but their music sounds incredibly complex to me. Odd time signatures, crazy transitions . . . No doubt, they're insanely talented. This likely would've been my #1 had it ended with more of an exclamation point than an ellipsis.)

3. Alestorm - Drink
(I loved these guys after first discovering them, but the novelty of "pirate metal" soon lost its luster. I mostly just nominated this to see what Nostromo87 thought of it since he loves both alcohol and pirates (pretty sure he's created threads dedicated to each subject). I still enjoy "Drink" as a goofy, fun song. It'd be awesome to one day find myself in a tavern singing this song along with all the patrons, everyone hoisting frothing beer mugs in the air . . . but unless I'm transported into a musical version of Pirates of the Caribbean, I doubt that scenario will ever play out.)

4. Tyler Childers - Universal Sound
(The acoustic version was my introduction to this song, so in comparison this studio version sounds overproduced, sanding away some of Childers's natural grit and not allowing the spotlight to shine as brightly on his excellent songwriting. Had I heard this version first, though, it's possible I'd be raving about it. I was planning on nominating his "Nose to the Grindstone." He's one of the most promising young country artists we have right now.)

5. Sweet Tempest - Mine
(Not the type of music that instantly grabs me, but I like it well enough and I think that it should continue to grow on me. It definitely suits the mood/atmosphere of the movie.)

6. Twistin' Tarantulas - Let's Go
(Danceable rockabilly!)

7. Sam & Dave - Hold On, I'm Coming
(I sing this every time I climax.)

8. The Donnas - Who Invited You?
(Wish it felt more rock n' roll than pop, but an enjoyable, albeit forgettable, little ditty.)

9. Vic Mensa ft. G-Eazy
(Most of the lyrics are dumb as hell, but in an entertaining way, at least.)

10. Retröxx - Aerobics Tape 5 (W.A.S.P. - Wild Child)
(Classic Nostromo. I so hope spandex and aerobics become fashionable again. I guess the modern equivalent is yoga, which just seems like fancy stretching to me. How do you work up a proper sweat doing a downward dog? . . . Disappointed that "Wild Child" is almost unrecognizable in this remix. That's one of my favorite songs to rock out to.)

11. Bhones - 12 Rounds
(Sounds like the perfect soundtrack for a video montage hyping a boxing match. As a listener, I was ready to throw in the towel in round one.)

12. Madonna - This Used to Be My Playground
(Adore Madonna, but slow ballads are not her strength. This one nearly put me to sleep.)

Probably my favorite round so far due to the diverse range of genres. Also a very tough group of songs to rank.

The Donnas - Who Invited You - I've nominated this a couple of times in tournaments and it never does well, but I don't care. I'm going all rocking ladies this month and The Donnas are among the best of them. I love this song.

Madonna - This Used To Be My Playground - I've always loved this song. I just really connect with it.

Sam & Dave - Hold On, I'm Coming - Classic. Honestly, how many don't like this? Gotta be a small percentage of the population.

Bohnes - 12 Rounds - Short and punchy. I like it. Get in, get done.

Sweet Tempest - Mine - I liked it.

Vic Mensa - Reverse ft. G-Eazy - This was ok and a nice change of pace for today

Floorman - Crazy Boy - Brassy with a strong bass. It felt a bit too one note towards the end but I liked it.

Alestorm - Drink - Has this been nominated before? Or something like it? It's fun anyway.

Twistin' Tarantulas - Let's Go - Not really my thing, but it's ok and at least it has tempo and energy.

Tyler Childers - Universal Sound - Repetitive, but that works in its favour. Not my thing, but it didn't outstay its welcome, which is something I always appreciate.

Retröxx - Aerobics Tape 5 (W.A.S.P. - Wild Child remix) - (I had to do the same as gbg, so I hope that's ok) - It does go on, doesn't it? Never gets anywhere though.

Opeth - Windowpane - Sorry, I'm sure it's all very clever and everything, but I just don't care. It's like rock trance or something. In a comedown room, I'm sure I'd appreciate it.

#1. Retröxx - Aerobics (Tape 5)
I'd buy four zillion of these synth track tapes, and I'd want each one to be numbered like that, Tape 367, Tape 29,638, Tape 937,947,843, etc. While drinking the other day I came to this choice. The forum can definitely profit from some EXERCISE SPIRIT, I've seen that MoFo Personal Pictures Thread, LAFF. Unfortunate the aerobics video didn't work for Honeykid, and assume that also means that entire YouTube Channel isn't available to him, it's called The 80s Retrospective (http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTtiETWCeBFwm1TqkoE7TBA/videos?view=0&sort=p&flow=grid), lots of fun material!!!!

#2. Alestorm - Drink
Clear the decks for action or in her lagoon we'll drop anchor! Heave off yer corsets and prepare to be boarded! Firstrate gunpowder rum drinking music, now I want to find more Alestorm videos.

#3. The Donnas - Who Invited You?
I'm pretty good with it. *Attitude*

#4. Sweet Tempest - Mine
Stylish echo-ie muffled foxy-ness

#5. Sam & Dave - Hold On, I'm Coming
It's used in movies sometimes, classic

#6. Floorman - Crazy Boy
Swingin music with a welcome flow to it

#7. Opeth - Windowpane
Actually a fine song. Not familiar with the band

#8. Tyler Childers - Universal Sound
Pleasing melody and harmony, I've lost most interest in country music but sometimes I can enjoy it and this sounds pretty favorable.

#9. Twistin' Tarantulas - Let's Go
Upbeat throwback kind of rock

#10. Madonna - This Used to Be My Playground
Apparently the theme song for the film A League Of Their Own, sort of somber slow-dance song

#11. Bohnes - 12 Rounds
Wicked

#12. Vic Mensa ft. G-Eazy

Round 7

1. Tanya Tucker - The Wheels of Laredo
(A great return to form by a country music legend. Few artists possess a voice with so much character.)

2. Ihsahn - Until I Too Dissolve
(I thought this was pretty kick-ass. Hearing harsh vocals mixed in with very 80's sounding riffs gives the song a sorta schizophrenic feel, but it worked for me. Will be listening to more of their stuff.)

3. The Seige - Run For Your Life
(Rap is one of my least favorite genres, but this track turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. I love how intense and adrenalized it feels, really embodying the "run for your life" of its title.)

4. Don Williams - If Hollywood Don't Need You
(Pleasant, soothing, laidback.)

5. Ida Maria - I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked
(People usually tell me the opposite. I actually just listened to this for the first time the other day when it showed up in the YouTube suggestions and the title caught my eye. Funny that it now gets nominated. Fun, energetic song.)

6. Sly & The Family Stone - Dance to the Music
(Funky.)

7. Thin Lizzy - Boys Are Back in Town
(A classic rock staple that's grown a bit stale for me due to overexposure.)

8. Soviac - Strill
(I enjoyed this while it lasted, but it's so short that it doesn't make any real impact.)

9. Low Flying Owls - Looks of a Killer
(Didn't do anything for me and felt twice as long as it actually was.)

Each round is open for voting for 2 days.
I certainly can if needs be, here be some instructions that may help you to be self-sufficient though:
1. Copy the url of the link you want
2. Type the text of the artist and song in a response ... i.e. Clive Dunn - Grandad
3. Highlight that text
4. In the list of optional actions at the top of the response box (where italics, bold, underline etc. is click the picture of a globe with 2 links of a chain underneath it
5. In the box that comes up paste the url you copied earlier
6. Edit the "www" in the box to "m"
7. Click ok and it will wrap the HTML for the link around the text and that's it

You can verify it looks ok and that it works by previewing the post in the 'Go Advanced' editing option.

Round 8

1. Rush - La Villa Strangiato
(I try to avoid nominating such long songs, but since there's only 7 of us in this round, hopefully nobody minded. This song is the definition of epic. A sonic masterpiece and one of the greatest rock instrumentals ever recorded. I'd be a bigger fan of Rush if not for Geddy Lee's wimpy voice, but here that's not an issue.)

2. DMX - X Gon Give It To Ya
(As I've said before, I don't listen to much rap, but I've always loved DMX's gruff voice. I feel like a bad-ass anytime his music plays.)

3. Miranda Lambert - Gunpowder & Lead
(I bemoan the state of modern country radio, but I think Miranda Lambert is one of the few bright spots. I like her most when she's in angry redneck mode, as she is here.)

4. Pearl Jam - Even Flow
(Not a big fan of Pearl Jam, but I do like this song, even though I've heard it countless times on the radio.)

5. Camille - Home is Where It Hurts
(Wasn't sure if I liked this or not, so I gave it a second listen. Still unsure. Lots of disparate elements going on here that don't seem to mesh, but it's an interesting listen.)

6. Slipknot - Vermilion Pt. 2
(The softest song I've heard from Slipknot, but I found myself longing for their usual intensity.)

7. Robert Goulet - The Impossible Dream
(I've only ever heard the name 'Robert Goulet' in the context of a joke, and listening to this I can understand why, as his singing style is impossible to take seriously.)

1. Jake Holmes - Dazed and Confused
- Zeppelin stole it and made it better, but the original version is really interesting and trippy and urgent.

2. The Smiths - What Difference Does It Make?
- I guess at some point I'll probably just have to admit that I am a Smiths fan.

3. The Secret Sisters - He's Fine
- Heard of The Secret Sisters, never listened before. Will listen again.

4. Dire Straits - Walk of Life
- This song is like when you are in a bad mood and somebody is way too happy around you. They either cheer you up or piss you off.

5. Sullivan - What's Good For the King
- I was actually digging the Sufjan Stevens-esque parts of the song before they started being loud. After that, it felt like a Tony Hawk video game song, which is not my thing.

6. Ricky Van Shelton - If You're Ever in My Arms
- Not terrible or anything, but not really my speed

7. Jason Aldean - Rearview Town
- I hate Jason Aldean. Like, a lot.

lenslady
06-20-19, 12:04 AM
1- Dire Straits - The Walk Of Life - This song has a riff that I'd swear I was born hearing. The riff makes the song, and the entire tune is as upbeat as the summer sun, and as sweetly addictive as a bar of fine chocolate. Just makes me smile through and through.

2- The Secret Sisters - He's Fine
Terrific! Grabs your ear like an old familiar friend, and mines the same heartbreak as Tammy Wynette did , but in a new and unique way. Great harmonies, melody, storytelling and instrumentation. This song has it all. This is how it's done, friends.

3- Sullivan - What's Good For the King
Like jiraffejustin I was happy enough with the 'acoustic' stretch of the song, but the louder electric segment worked for me too. I love good lyrics, and there were some great Dylanesque ( that 's a plus with me) images ( lidocaine eyes!) Driving rhythm Entrancing song.

4- Ricky Van Shelton - If You're Ever In My Arms
Good sound , nice warm voice. True there's no new ground being broke here, but hey it's June, the month of romance, and this one deserves a slow dance with the one you love.

5- The Smiths- What Difference Does It Make
Interesting, strong beat, seems like alt rock, and if the melody isn't as indelible as the top 3; well,, he asks a tantalizing question.

6- Jason Aldean - Rearview Town -
I like the theme, sort of ' Take this Town and Shove It. Worth a listen but the others just appealed more to me.

7- Jake Holmes - Dazed and Confused
Interesting that this was the backbone of a Led Zeppelin song. It was a little dated in its sound, but that doesn't usually bother me. I just think it didn't grab me as much as the others .

1. The Secret Sisters - He's Fine
(More than fine.)

2. Jake Holmes - Dazed and Confused
(As a big Zeppelin fan, I'm ashamed to say that this is my first time hearing of this song or Jake Holmes . . . although I guess that's the way Jimmy Page would've wanted it. Love how psychedelic this gets. Still prefer Zep's reinterpretation, but I think this version does a better job of capturing that "dazed and confused" feeling.)

3. Ricky Van Shelton - If You're Ever in My Arms
(Comes close to crossing the threshold of being annoyingly corny, but thankfully it didn't quite reach that point for me, instead remaining an effectively romantic, slow-tempo country ballad.)

4. The Smiths - What Difference Does It Make
(Doesn't light my world on fire, but pretty good.)

5. Dire Straits - Walk of Life
(Heard it plenty of times on the radio over the years, but it's just not a song that's ever grabbed me.)

6. Jason Aldean - Rearview Town
(I like the sentiment of the song, but that's the only positive thing I have to say.)

7. Sullivan - What's Good for the King

Thanks Chypmunk - this was a lot of fun and I was glad to tie with a great song. And an extra BIG thank you to those mofos who gave me 'thumbs up' support- it really means a lot :)

The best part of this tourney was to have the opportunity to listen to all the music from all mofos . Made me smile all week.

1. Queensryche - Speak - I don't agree with the ideology, but in the framework of the concept album, this song kicks a ton of ass. Love the chuggy verse riff, and this one has a memorable guitar solo that weaves the main theme of the song in. Cool vocal approach that is almost too bombastic, but not quite.

2. Lord of the Lost - Loreley - Dark and Heavy - Love it! I sent this to my wife and she really likes it, as well.

3. Avenged Sevenfold - A Little Piece Of Heaven - Bizarre A7F song, but I liked it in a sort of odd Devin Townsend way.

4. Postmodern Jukebox and Haley Reinhart - Creep - Loved this!

5. The Platters - Twilight Time - Saw these guys live in Disneyland in the 80s. Great tune.

6. Connie Francis - Fallin' - Classic tune!

7. Ghostpoet - X Marks the Spot (feat Nadine Shah) - This is a tough round. I like this, but I still have to put it fairly far down the list.

8. The Sword - Freya - This band. I feel like I should like them more, but I find their music to be boring and derivative.

9. Michael Crawford - Colors of the Wind - This set my teeth on edge. Way too far into the vanilla elevator music realm for my taste.

ROUND 10

Surely you remember your first love. And the night you met at your best friend's party, in the family den.
Wood paneling, a dartboard on the wall, card table with folding chairs, and you were lucky if you didn't bump into the billiards table. Liquor cabinet locked ( of course) - you were that young.

And you all were listening to the music your friend's parents listened to. Golden oldies, but tonight it was like those songs were made for you. Your eyes met, and you knew.

Surely you remember your first dance. That slow close waltz. Your first kiss.

And here you are again. And the season is lush - spring is just turning the corner into summer. The longest days, the sweetest nights The honeysuckle breeze, the bough bending trees, and the deep blue dusk upon the sea- and all the world is beckoning you to dance in each other's arms. "To fall in love again, as you did then."

Surely you remember the dance.

And the dance is just beginning...................
1-The Platters - Twilight Time

2- Ghostpoet- X Marks the Spot
Like this guy. I've heard some of his songs before, but not this one. Mesmerizing. He really is a poet- loved that line about 'the drawer in our house calling your name' Is he asking her to stay? Or pack it up and move out? Good sound, and a little bit of mystery.

3- Post modern Jukebox and Haley Reinhart- Creep
This really was a tie for #2 for me. Amazing. A bluesy torch singer for the 21st century. I've always felt that the blues is the bravest style of music- baring the secrets of the soul, the great losses , the shame, the self pity and self loathing for all to see - and then somehow it comes out with wit and triumph. Love this singer- her mighty voice and her diva growl - and what she did to reinvent this song.

4- Connie Francis - another great singer. I've always felt she was under recognized for her powerful voice and timeless style. Turns a nice phrase too- " swimming up the Niagra" A classic

5- Michael Crawford - Colors of the Wind. Liked the movie and liked the song. A lovely idealistic sentiment and the melody could be sung in any style.- country, pop, or roots - and nothing wrong with the arrangement here.

6- Queensrych- Speak
Like a prior poster I was intrigued by the world view and political statements herein, whether or not they're in concert with my own. If Woody Guthrie was around now , would he be in this band? Maybe not, but Phil Ochs might have.

7- Lord of The Lost -Lorely
The band is loud and tight, and the story is- ironically - haunting.

8- The Sword - Freya
Another powerful band -and story. I know I' m missing the point when I say this about these dark /goth/metal bands - but I'd love to hear the story with the buzz on the amp tuned down a bit.

9- Avenged Sevenfold- Little Piece of Heaven - again, not a style I listen to a lot, but again, great storytelling. Could be the plot for a goth version of Criminal Minds. And truth be told, the song following in the tradition of centuries old English ballads - of murdrer and mayhem and the supernatural.

1. Postmodern Jukebox and Haley Reinhart - Creep
- The people at PMJ deserve credit for doing something different and interesting and for giving Haley Reinhart a way to use her incredible voice. She is beyond talented, but it seems like the only thing she does that I am into is her stuff for PMJ. "Creep" by Radiohead is legitimately good, but I don't care for the band. This cover makes it something brand new and hearing it from a female perspective makes it all the more sad.

2. The Sword - Freya
- I'm always going to be into that doom Sabbath style. It's lyrically pretty nerdy, but these dudes are Zeppelin fans, so what can you really expect?

3. The Platters - Twilight Time
- Incredibly warm song.

4. Connie Francis - Fallin
- I love this type of music. I am not overly familiar with Connie Francis, but she sounds like a total badass here.

5. Ghostpoet - X Marks the Spot (feat. Nadine Shah)
- Musically, I really like this track. Vocally, it's kinda different, but not terrible.

6. Michael Crawford - Colors of the Wind
- I sometimes randomly burst out into the blue corn moon part. Not a great a song.

7. Lord of the Lost - Loreley
- I don't hate this, but I probably wouldn't seek it out again. I like the electronic work.

8. Avenged Sevenfold - A Little Piece of Heaven
- I appreciate how weird this video was, which actually helped me to pay attention to the song a lot more. I've never really cared that much for A7X though, and this track lasts a long 8 minutes.

9. Queensryche - Speak
- Musically this was enjoyable enough, but man, those lyrics are good for an eyeroll and a half. They would be tolerable if this song was presented in a way where I could feel like at least these guys might try to overthrow a government or felt out of control or something.

1. Malibu Ken - Acid King
- Aesop Rock is a weirdo. Love it.

2. Betty Davis - Anti Love Song
- Love Betty Davis. Gin Wigmore take notes. This is a bad ass female rock star. Her voice is so cool. The music is funk gold.

3. U2 & Johnny Cash - The Wanderer
- How have I never heard of this song before? What a weird mix. U2, Cash, and Eno. This should be just a clusterf*ck of a weird car crash, but I really like this. Part of the joy from this is expectations and how weird it is to hear Cash performing over these instruments. Interesting lyrics too.

4. Kenny Rogers - Morning Desire
- This has that 80's country sound that really keeps that era of country music from being my favorite. Kenny Rogers also has a certain softness that I don't usually like from male country singers. He'll never be a favorite of mine, but I can't really say that I ever hate any of his songs. And he's certainly charming. This song is decent enough.

5. Mad Season - I Don't Know Anything
- Perhaps this track should have just been an instrumental. Vocally it's not bad, but lyrically it's the kind of thing that kinda gets an eyeroll out of me nowadays. I really like do the music though.

6. The Dogs - End of an Era
- Decent 00's rock song. This type of music from this era had a relatively low ceiling for me. This tune is fine enough, I guess.

7. Gin Wigmore - Black Sheep
- Feels a little too on the nose for presenting yourself as a bad ass. Not terrible though. It's a fun, high energy performance. Seeing as it's a performance for a tv show, I probably would have had a decent time in the audience. Of course, the lyric about going black definitely doesn't make me think what she's trying to make me think.

I went to go say hi to a friend who was in town working for them (I hadn't even heard of them, so the name went in one ear and out the other). She suggested I just go up to the balcony to see the show. hahah. I hadn't intended seeing a band, didn't even know them, but it was pretty cool. I couldn't tell you if Haley was with them, they had a **** ton of personnel, none of whom I was familiar with. I was impressed with pretty much all of them though. 1. Rush - Limelight - IMO, one of the best rock songs of all time. A masterpiece that is both progressive and completely accessible at the same time. The band flows from one time signature to the next so seamlessly, that unless you are paying attention, you don;t even know it's happening. This is Rush at their peak, with Lee grooving on bass, Lifeson filling the song with odd chords that just weren't used in rock at the time (and an absolutely beautiful, weeping guitar solo), and Peart delivering his usual excellent drumming along with lyrically perhaps the best meditation of life on-stage ever written. A towering achievement in progressive rock, as well as a quintessential Rush tune.

2. Ghost - Ritual - I'm a big Ghost fan, especially of their earlier stuff.

3. The Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet with Butterfly Wings - Top notch 90s anthem with perhaps some of the best lyrics Corgan ever wrote.

4. Talking Heads - Psycho Killer - Classic Talking Heads tune. They were at the top of their game here.

5. The Breeders - Cannonball - A less than classic 90s tune, but still dripping with the signature sound of the time.

6. Kin Palo - Twisted - I liked this one a lot! This is another great round of music so far...

7. P!nk - So What - Starting to fall off a bit for me at this point, however. Pink has a great voice, which locks her in here in the 7 slot.

8. Jeremy Jordan and Katharine McPhee - Rewrite This Story - Pretty bland, McPhee is a dime-a-dozen cookie cutter cutsie doodle.

9. Victoria+Jean - Holly - Did not like this.

10. Paul Cauthen - Cocaine Country Dancing - Liked this even less! I just can't do country music.
