I've just bought an aeropress kit, and it seems a bit of an upgrade on my Caffetiere, now I've got a decent recipe.

Does anybody have a favourite ground coffee / coffee bean?

The Grumpy Mule India seems decent, but I'm convinced there are better out there

My wife used to own a coffee house in Mobile, AL, and she's tried a ton of them. Recently she's had to switch to decaf, so she uses Raven's Brew and Kicking Horse. She used to buy one called Three Peckered Billy Goat. These coffee growers have senses of humor.

I've always been a coffee Neanderthal, and a cheapskate, so I use Folgers brewed..:) But lately I've had to make it so weak that it's like coffee flavored water..

Nah, I just need the caffeine to satisfy the addiction. I know it gets awfully fancy, though. I'd be curious to hear how it goes with all your new stuff.

The aeropress is about 10 times easier to use than a caffetiere (and way faster), and there's virtually zero clean up process. It's amazing.

I really recommend one. I'm not a coffee connoseur though so proper snobs may frown on this device.

I am very serious about.my coffee - I make my own and I seriously have to have it. ;) But I am not as adventurous as you as far as gadgets ScarletLion Yours probably brews an exotic coffee, but I've been very happy with my stovetop glass perculator.

I have recently cut waaaayyyyyyy back on caffeine so I' m usually brewing decaf. And I let it perc a long while; 10-12 minutes , so it's a rich brew. I tend to use Folgers or fresh ground decaf from a store.

I have found that for caf coffee I usually prefer Columbian - but for decaf I like French - seems to work better.

And when I'm out of the house, Dunkin's my favorite.

Hoist your cups, coffee friends, it may be our last vice left. :)

Love coffee. I'm a huge (evolving) coffee fanatic!

I want to learn all the time and try new stuff. I love to visit coffee places when I'm out and my preferred kind of coffee is a cortado. I feel like that's a great middle ground for someone who would love to taste coffee in its purest form, but without the natural bitterness of an espresso shot. I enjoy a pure espresso every now and then, but I love how the half-espresso/half-milk of a cortado keeps everything but the bitterness intact - you still get the taste of roasted coffee beans, the wholeness of the taste and just the depth of it. I love that.

I got a Sage/Breville espresso machine at home where I make everything from a cortado to an Americano and a latte or cappuchino for my sister and mom, who love those.

I ground my own coffee beans of course, but have yet to experiment with roasting them myself... I drink filter coffee when I'm just in a hurry or french press when I'm feeling a bit fancy and then espresso when I have the time.

I live in Denmark so I can't really recommend any beans.

I find it pretty amusing that I was the last one to post here.

Anyways, as I also posted about in the corona thread I just bought a BUNCH of coffee stuff (and I do mean a bunch). Recently I got myself an AeroPress, which I really love. Been brewing with that a lot lately. But I thought it wasn’t quite enough to satisfy my growing obsessiveness over coffee...

So i recently bought coffee stuff for like 150 dollars. I got myself a Chemex, a Hario V60, some coffee beans and some other stuff here and there.

Adding all that to my drip coffee machine, the espresso machine, the French press and the occasional instant coffee, I really got a lot of freaking ways to brew coffee now and keep me occupied during these crazy times.

You might try using a French press or a stove top percolator, especially if you're going through the trouble of grinding your own beans. Filtering coffee through a paper filter you're losing a lot of flavor.

I guess I've more or less become an addict. Probably it was just an excuse to get up from my desk at work and walk away for a few minutes. I'd get a cup from the kitchen and slowly wind my way back the long way making sure to stop at everyone else's desk to say good morning first. Now I feel I need it, though I'm not sure the caffeine does much. Yeah. Patterns.

And a Dunkin has opened up about 8 miles from home. I'll never stop there. One, the line is as long as any Starbucks. Two, I hate franchise coffee houses. Rather, I generally hate the people that frequent them. At least those here. :D

I also love coffee :)
If I go out, I'll just buy any good espresso they make with an espresso machine.
I like simple black coffee, don't like to add nor milk nor sugar into my coffee.
For home I like to buy these 2 types of coffee.... one of them is Austrian and the other English:
https://iili.io/qm8gnI.jpg
https://iili.io/qm8PFn.jpg
From Julius Meinl I like de Jubilaum and from Costa (which has 10 levels of roasting and different types of coffee) - I love the Colombian Roast (7)..... each has a different aroma, Costa is better but I like the other one too
I bought once a small Phillips Saeco espresso machine, but since you have to make like 4 or 5 coffees until it makes a decent coffee with that brown cream on top - I quit using it and returned to the "classical" moka-pot.... which remains my favourite coffee maker.... oldie but goldie :p

They say coffee will disappear (https://www.businessinsider.com/how-coffee-bees-effected-climate-change-south-america-2017-9) by 2050. So we should enjoy it while we can.
Same as the green tea, dark chocolate and the red wine, coffee is very rich in antioxidants, so it reduces the possibility of developing cancer.
If by 2050 will disappear people should build up reserves to have it while they can.
The best coffee they say (and the most expensive one ) is the Kopi Luwak (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kopi_luwak) which is obtained from "partially digested coffee cherries, which have been eaten and defecated by the Asian palm civet".
It is produced mainly in Indonesia.
We should try at least one cup during our life time ha ha :D

Usually people tend to drink warm drinks in the winter :)
Me for example I drink more wine during the winter because it rises my blood pressure therefore my body temperature and I get warm, while in summer I'll drink more beer because it's more refreshing :p
In war when they were fighting during the winter, soldiers use to have a chocolate in their pockets because it contains a lot of calories so they got warmer (please don't ask me which war coz' I can't remember lol )...

Coffee is probably going to become like caviar sooner than later.

Especially if coffee rust sets in on any of these farms.

Last time there was serious coffee rust it wiped out a whole country’s production of the plant.

And since a lot of these coffee strains are so similar it wouldn’t be unheard of for the majority of the market to get wiped out. Same goes for bananas.

Re coffee rust: it is a fungus that is dependent upon coffee to survive, so it only attacks coffee plants and once it gets started you ain’t going to stop it. Back in the 50s (I think that’s when it last was) there was a small island known for exporting coffee until rust set in and they had to destroy entire crops to eradicate it. By the time they were successful in stopping it the island had already moved on to another crop and that coffee bean is now lost to the annals of history.

As for bananas, we have strategically grown and breed certain strains to create a fast growing/ripening banana that is relatively transport/shelf stable. If anything ever wipes out/attacks that particular strain then no more bananas.

Of course I just shouted about coffee...

No coffee. NBD. It’s one of my favorite things, but not as much as oxygen. Speaking of...

What are some at home, drip brewing coffee tips. Please don’t “french press” me or send me to buy something else.

Drip coffee, whole bean, filtered water is my process. I like a strong cup (doesn’t seem thin/watery), but seem to get too much of that oily/acidic tongue finish.

I’ve tried a bunch of the Target varieties and broke down and got a bag from the people that can’t spell doughnut. Still not right after experimenting with the amounts. I use about 8T for 4 (carafe) cups, which is probably 18oz of water.

My gf has a Keurig, SA blend from Target and it is perfect. That leads me to believe it’s the process over any of my physiological issues.

A coarser roast and less coffee seem to be a step in the right direction.

Hate to say how much I love the french press, only because I resisted it so long. Didn’t want to be the fp guy 🤫

The simplicity wins me over and I’m surprised by how long it stays warm. Clean-up is the only drawback.

If you don't have on you a moka-pot, nor an espresso machine, maybe traveling somewhere......
Here is how you can make a Turkish Coffee
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvNWLrRzIAM

If I'm making Turkish Coffee, I'm not boiling the coffee with the water, I add it after it's strongly boiling..... by stopping the stove and adding the coffee after it boiled. Then I stir it.
But I guess there are different styles of making it ....

Here is another style ....

At least (in both videos) they agree on 2 things: the heat on the stove should be medium and when you pour it - you have to pour it slowly :)

Panicked at a big shopping center this a.m. (unfamiliar to me). Desperately in need of coffee & could not find a DNKN. Had to be there since they are everywhere. Finally found one tucked away off the main strip (unusual for DNKN). Panic over.

First time ever I’ve seen a little case of wipes affixed to each table for the use of customers at DNKN. Excellent idea.

A Dunkin Donuts was constructed a few miles from my house about six months ago. It's drive-thru only. No going inside at all unless you work there. I'm wondering if that was a conscious pandemic-related choice or if Dunkin Donuts has had a bunch of drive-thru only locations. Anyone?

I'm by no means a coffee snob, but I try to have my "morning" coffee every day. (I'm a night owl, so sometimes that first coffee is, like, now—which is 11 a.m.) My daughter buys me a bag of this coffee for Christmas most years now, and I love it. Very smoooooth:

https://aromaridge.com/roasted-coffees/coffee-for-a-cause/hannas-blend-coffee/

Other than that, I have a few local favorite shops, especially Café Kolache, about three miles from my house: https://cafekolache.com/ The owners are great fun, the kolaches are scrumptious (both breakfast and lunch types). Their coffee is as close to perfect as I've ever tasted. A few years ago a Starbucks moved in just down the block, and I worried for the future of my beloved little coffee shop. But... no worries! Starbucks has its very different type of client, and Café Kolache's patrons are incredibly loyal. Both shops survive at opposite ends of the block of the small town near me.

And now, I'm off to drink my Hannah's blend with a little Sweet 'n Low and some Coffee Mate sugar-free Italian Sweet Creme creamer, in my punctuation mug given to me by a writer friend, the mug sitting on a coffee warmer so I can sip for hours. No judgment, please. :)

Never seen a drive-thru only DNKN, which doesn’t mean they don’t exist. No doubt drive-thru only is the way to go. The one at the end of my street is eat-in & drive-thru. My favorite DNKN, which is eat-in only, has “temporarily closed”, which is maddening.

Where I live, since many people here don’t own cars, the best business model IMO is eat-in & drive-thru. The drive-thru part is definitely the busiest part though.

To be fair, if it had issues, it might have been tough to fix. They are notorious for not being very user-friendly once something major goes wrong. And with a bajillion parts, a LOT can go wrong. I have a few Selectrics here that are currently little more than paper weights or door stops because they're not functioning ... and there are no local typewriter repair shops around. The one that was closest (2 hours, one way) used to look at Selectrics but he too has since stopped doing repairs.

So, that one could have looked fine but been in non-working condition with little hope of revival. :(

John McClane

Selectrics are paperweights now.

Good luck finding anyone that will work on them. And even more luck needed to find parts. Plus, the most important parts are freaking plastic. My carriage won't advance anymore because a tiny little plastic piece broke. I mean, the typewriter was practically brand new from my gramps (I even have the receipt: $500!!). And that was with the employee discount he got from IBM.

I would love to get it fixed but it just ain't going to happen. :(

So in the back of the closet it shall sit for now, but I am never getting rid of it. It may not work, but it makes a fantastic art piece, including the table that came with it.

EDIT: One of the reasons why they are so advance is because they were designed with in office repairs in mind. Buy the machine and pay IBM for service. It made them boatloads of cash back in the day.

I actually do know people who fix them—I'm in a Facebook group that's just for Selectrics—but none of them live near me, and I ain't sending a Selectric through the mail! (Granted, I got several of mine on eBay and they were shipped, but it was pricey and dicey.)

Next time I attend that yearly typewriter gathering in West Virginia, I'll bring at least one of my Selectrics to hand off to one of the repair guys there. He can then have it for a year till the next meeting. :D

Oh, where were we? COFFEE.

Of course seriously. My dream is to become a barista. And I have to have a good understanding of coffee brewing guides in order to be a good worker in the future. I don't like it when someone else makes coffee. I like to make it myself. That's what I started from. And from that came this desire for a future profession. So at the moment I'm studying everything related to the technology of making coffee. Making it for someone?

yee ole ex gifted me a bag-o-grounds for me bir... ok wtf I'm actually typing like Chyp now. lol

The ex sent over a bag of coffee for my bday recently. KINDA out of the blue and unexpected. I don't have a coffee pot at home though, so brought it to work to share. Everyone here seems to enjoy it. It does have a slightly tart lemon kick up front for the first few sips, but you adjust to it and it fades almost as soon as you taste it. The coffee flavor then takes over.

It's not bitter. Not enough to need a sweetener or anything. Depending on how you make it, it's almost like a strong tea with just a drop of lemon. It's gotten a good response here and two of us have noticed that it must have a good bit of caffeine as we both were pinging about twenty minutes or so after downing a cup each. The bag is hell to get a spoon in and out of.

But I've been trying to ease off the caffeine to help my sleepless nights. So far so good, though I'm still adjusting.

AGREED. That's for weak-willed tea drinkers. :D Blech.

I'm back to good ol' Maxwell House here at home. And I got a new coffeemaker that automatically works with Alexa. I know many coffeemakers have timers built in, but I have no clue WHEN I'm going to want coffee on any given morning. Some nights I'm up way later than others and therefore get up later the next day. So, a timer wouldn't work. You need to know WHEN you want the coffeemaker to kick in. I never know. :D

So now I can simply wake up and, while I'm still in bed, croak out, "Alexa, turn on the coffeemaker."

And she cheerfully responds, "Okay!" By the time I'm dressed and down the steps, the coffee is ready.

I don't even have to set the clock or anything. The Alexa devices found it. And any Alexa device on the same network will be able to turn on the coffeemaker for me. I didn't even have to connect it to the home network. The network just found it. Best coffeemaker ever.

You too can be spoiled. Go here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TFLNDNR

We have so much of our house automated now that I have to warn guests that lights seem to randomly go off and on by themselves, the bathroom floor heats up now and then, and the phone shouts out the number of whoever is calling. Well, these are things mostly just tied to our home network/LAN and not the WAN. And nothing with the locks/keys. Those are all old school.

But hey, if the FBI wants to start hacking into the coffeemaker and turning it on for me in the morning, that's fine by me. :D

I fought it at the time because we had been without a working shower/main bathroom for months and were still DRIVING back to the OLD HOUSE to take a freaking shower every day. His research and added work (since he did it himself) meant about three extra weeks on the project. He chose electric floor heating instead of hot water. (He's an electrical engineer, so...)

But I tell ya, in the dead of winter, in the middle of the night, when you walk in there barefoot and feel WARM tiles underfoot... oh my goodness. I fall in love with him all over again. :D

It also means the whole bathroom is warmer whenever the floor is "on." Very nice when getting nekkid to shower when it's freezing outside.

Oh yes! It's automated too (since it's encased in self-leveling concrete and does need a few minutes to heat up so you can feel it). So we typically have it set to go on about a half hour before hubby gets up for work. It's then off most of the day after we're both up and showered.

It seems like every few years the medical community changes its stance on coffee - one year it's one of the most destructive things you can put into your body, then another year it allegedly helps to prevent cancer, heart disease and it treats allergies!

Since I'm a habitual user, I lean toward accepting coffee as a cure-all.

In recent times I start off with a couple cups of hot coffee in the morning, but I've taken to making an afternoon ice coffee almost everyday.

Coffee is some inseparable thing of my everyday life for decades. I start it after the breakfast and drink at least three cups of it until the late afternoon.

This Bosch is our brand new machine that substituted the previous one which served us for more than 15 years. It is a filter-type coffee machine (the coffee is put in a paper filter into the machine, one filter per make).
We use different brands of finely ground coffee, usually Lavazza, Jacobs or Tchibo as well as Lidl packs.

After switching to lattes my taste for coffee in hot water has declined to the point I wont make coffee without milk most of the time. I prefer instant crystals. Dump them in the milk and microwave it. Add flavors such as chocolate, almond, mint or coconut. Shake hard, fetch out foam, then drink.

I've bought enough bad lattes while out shopping that I almost never buy them anymore at coffee shops, I cant trust their drinks to be pure and uncontaminated. Thats fine though because a coffee shop latte is $6-$10 per cup while a home made cup is more like $1-$2 when you calculate out the expense. So, not trusting them is an all-around win-win situation.
