View Full Version : Waiting for Baseball
This is the time of year where there's a lot of trading and deal-making going on in Major League Baseball. Congratulations to Powdered Water as his Seattle Mariners have now got Edwin Encarnacion, Cleveland getting back Carlos Santana. It's a 3 way trade involving the Tampa Bay Ray's, but as it always is with the Rays, who they give up and who they are getting is nobody anyone has heard of.

swallows a little vomit I think Boston had built up their karma over a century to where they could win the World Series in bunches. I had a strong feeling they were going to the World Series before the All-Star break because their pitching rotation was silly ridiculous.
Our pitching? The Rays spent 30 million dollars and got Charlie Morton for two years. You think that's a bad investment? You're damn right it is. Joe Maddon wept.
Morton's gotten pretty good. I think the bigger issue is, you're paying him so he kinda has to be, when the money's probably better spent finding whoever this year's Morton is. Of course, if he pitches as well the next two years as he did the last year or so, it'll still be a great deal.
Anyway, yeah, I'm counting the days, too, for both baseball and softball. Might not be too long, there's usually a warm day in mid-February where we can get some practice in. Here's hoping!

You still slugging well? I remember you saying the first year you had a powerful stick cuz he had the sense to use your torso. Can't remember how fast they throw the ball to you though. I'm sure the pitching is getting harder to hit each year as the pictures develop also.
Yeah I hope both Morton & Glasgow (former Bucs) keep going strong.
You still slugging well?
Pretty well. My offense took a dip this past year, though. I was doing this pretty intense esports thing throughout the spring and summer, and went on a huge hot streak when it ended in the fall, so my focus was probably split.
Also need to start lifting. My biggest power numbers came the year after I made a point to lift weights in the offseason, though, and I've kinda been coasting on that, with steadily lower power numbers each year since. But after a few years of that, it's obvious it's not a fluke and I've probably given back a lot of that strength, so I'm going at it again this offseason, but harder. Guess it'll just require more maintenance.
Can't remember how fast they throw the ball to you though.
It's just slow-pitch. The rule says it has to arc between six and 12 feet, I think, though it's not generally enforced unless it's extreme. We actually probably lost a championship game because the pitcher was throwing borderline fastpitch and the ump just didn't want to call it. Really threw off our timing.
Yeah I hope both Morton & Glasgow (former Bucs) keep going strong.
Yeah, kinda worried Glasnow's going to haunt us the way Morton kinda has already. Our team is pretty darn good at pitcher reclamation projects and squeezing good results out of bargain bin guys, but we haven't been able to turn out most talented prospects into major contributors and we still have way too many guys finding success after they leave. Bleh.

The weightlifting definitely is a benefit, I know just from Longoria watching him and his size and power decline from when he first started because he took up with yoga (no weightlifting) and his numbers never had been the same since.
Someone I knew played baseball and he said the best ball he ever played was when he didn't have a girlfriend. So focus yeah definitely definitely makes a difference. Baseball is more like golf than what people know.

Why? The Ray's will NEVER be able to land anyone with those price tags, and Machado will probably go to the Yankees. Wouldn't you want them with your team rather than against your team?
I think he's saying he doesn't like their attitudes.
Regardless of attitude, Harper's not going to be worth whatever he gets, I don't think. He's gonna want money as if his 2015 was the norm, rather than exception.

All of this and also in regards to Harper, if he were to go to the American League, there's a long list of disappointing players after they move over from the NL.

I remember that brutal slump Albert Pujols went through when he came to the Angels. I think he had one maybe two good years so far in L.A. just with hitting. There does seem to be hitters improving when they go over to the National League compared to improving when to come over to the American. I notice American league pitchers mostly flourish going over to the National League, but not the other way around. He has improved tremendously but I'm very nervous about Charlie Morton coming over to the American League Ray's.

It's such a weird thing and I have no idea the reasons behind it. For some players there's also a problem going from a small market to a large competitive market, although that's not an issue for the Rays.

No kidding lol, with Maddon gone idk if the Ray's ever will win a world series. Unrelated, but I think if the Lightning can win the Stanley Cup, Buccaneers win the Super Bowl , then the Ray's could win it all sometime. The Bucs & Lightning weren't in the A.L. East though.
I didn't know Charlie Mortons #'s the past 2 seasons were that strong?! Holy crap.

Yeah, the research about a pitcher's effectiveness diminishing each time through the order has been out there for awhile and now we're seeing the big market clubs start to make major personnel decisions based on it. Elite bullpens offer more benefit for each dollar given how expensive reliable starters are, at least for now. After a year or two of this, though, it could start going the other way.
The Kershaws and Verlanders who can remain deeply effective late in the game are still exceptionally valuable, but it's pretty hard to know who's going to be that guy, and anyone believe that tier probably isn't offering enough marginal value over the guys on the lower end of the middle range, given the relief help you could buy instead with the difference in salary.

Relief pitchers are becoming the standard more and more each year. 9 inning pitchers are scarcer than NFL teams with one RB. Hell, Tampa only has Morton, Snell. and Glasnow - 3 starters, and they're planning to rely on the bullpen going forward. I'm sure they'll call someone up to get at least 4 starters, 2 games a week for a bullpen would be too much. We just grabbed Drake from Toronto though, who knows?
Damn this is a boring offseason. I wish Machado would just sign with the Yanks and be done with it. If he chooses New York though you know Baltimore will Boo the living hell out of him.
DJ Lemahui (mispelt) just signed with the Yankees. Most likely they're gonna land Machado, and theyve spent a megaton of money rehauling their bullpen. The Yankees are gonna be scary tough next year.

Same as most years, somewhere in March.
I'll post something probably next week, mid-February at the latest, to start planning and whatnot.
A 10 team league?! bleah! There would never be a need to work the waiver wire, and I wouldn't know what to do with myself.
Looking forward to seeing Avisail, Pham, Morton, and Glasnow play this year, and hopefully a full healthy season at that. I've used Avisail Garcia on my FBB team periodically the past 2 seasons, neat how he's now with Tampa. I should be a scout.

Astros look like they're about to get hammered by MLB. What's appropriate for a pretty bad case of sign stealing? Suspensions, draft picks, fines are obvious but what else? Banning the manager and/or GM seems possible but would MLB go that far?
I'm thinking they'll lose several prominent draft picks (multiple first-rounders?), and be fined something in the millions. It's gonna be big. I dunno about lifetime bans, though. Maybe temporary ones?
They're not going to revoke any hardware, I don't think.
Hey Fredrick
01-10-20, 01:27 PM
The only reason I think it may go towards bans is that teams were just warned NOT to do what the Astros did. Maybe one of those lifetime but not really lifetime bans like what's his name, Williams(?) in New Orleans got for bountygate. How far does Manfred want to puff up his chest? Revoking hardware never made any sense to me. The entire thing with winning a championship is the instant euphoria the players and fans get. Record books are fine but it's the party that follows a championship and that one or two week window were everything is great that makes winning one so cool.
That's true, but another part of the enjoyment is the "nobody can take this away" thing. "Flags fly forever." They can't take away the in-the-moment satisfaction, as you say, but I imagine that asterisk would chafe for a lot of fans, and the organization, and probably taint that memory a bit. Ideally people would just not develop a genuine vicarious emotional stake in this stuff at all (so that they wouldn't much care if some other fan base threw the revoked hardware at them), but that's not changing any time soon.
Anyway, good point re: the warning. Defiance usually needs to be punished more than violation, in and of itself.
Wyldesyde19
01-10-20, 01:57 PM
It’ll be similar to the Patriots in football, I imagine. Maybe a suspension for the manager and/or GM. Fines and loss of draft picks likely.
I enjoy listening to baseball, and cricket for that matter, as they are 2 sports that have the time for the descriptions do make it possible to have a visualization of the action, as opposed to various football codes etc. The point being, coming from a perspective of not being completely ignorant, but perhaps not as well versed as those who grew up following baseball at close hand.
In regards to the current sign stealing scandal and it's place in the context of cheating in the sport as a whole though, it's interesting somewhat to consider how for example the use of PEDs, although not strictly enforced, or at least a blind eye turned, to literally enhance performance that otherwise players would not have been capable of or able to maintain.
But the thought occured to me a few months back when this story first broke, had actually done a rewatch of Eight Men Out, as it was 100 years anniversary of the Black Sox 1919 World Series. It's a film had sat through quite a few times over the past 30 years and have listened to the Eliott Asinoff book of the same name, which naturally goes into much more detail than the film contains. However, it was the film that I was specifically thinking of, and in particular the scene toward the end where Buck Weaver (John Cusack) points out that he never took any money, never made an error and batted .326, yet he was still banned, not for having cheated but for simply having been aware of others having agreed to. A fact that it should be noted that there was no rule about at the time, but was retrospectively enforced.
Now, in light of the Commisioner having literally made a statement after the BoSox incident a few years ago, no club, management or player should have been under any illusion about the legality of this practice, and by so doing, that the Astros were not complying with this, and indeed were benefitting from the practice of electronic sign stealing. The Commisioner did say that any further breaches will be met with much more substantial penalty than what the BoSox were subject to.
This isn't a case of retrofitting a punishment for a rule that never existed, as Buck Weaver was subjected to. Now, I'm not trying to make the case as to the rights or wrongs of Weaver's set of circumstances, but to highlight how someone who legally never broke an existing rule as it stood in 1919 and as part of a team who were considered to be the best in baseball in that era, was treated compared with the current Astros situation, who likewise have enjoyed considerable success in recent times, and no doubt part of that has to be attributed to what we know of the electronic sign stealing, and what they may be penalized retrospectively.
After all, considering MLB acknowledge Barry Bonds HR records, powered by the use of PED's, how then to strike off Jose Altuve's, attained through knowing what to expect from a pitcher through the use of electronic sign stealing? After all, if you know what's coming, you've a much better chance of being able to hit it. And how many, if any, of these multi-millionaire ballplayers who benefitted from the use of these stolen signs, the management of these players, those that actively participated in the transmitting and passing on of this information, whether under direction from club higher up's or of their own action, will likewise be dealt with by the Commisioner's Office in the same way as to make the game 'clean' once again?
Where is the balance? Where is the consistency? Where is the line and what happens to those that cross it?
Just food for off-season thoughts.
Well, I came pretty close: $5 million, first and second round picks the next two years, and a one-year suspension for the GM and the manager.

This is just the all-purpose baseball thread. We don't do signups until February usually. Anyway, per usual it'll just depend on how many returning owners we get. I've promised spots to one or two people who failed to get in before, but those are coin flips when February rolls around. If there's an open slot after all that, all yours.

Yeah, my guess is they couldn't figure out how to go after specific players since it's not clear how widespread it was or who knew about it (probably all of them, more or less?).

Def a major TIME commitment!
For sure, so I never begrudge anyone interested for changing their minds later when the time comes, and usually just assume one or two will think twice about it. We'll know in about a month, though. Can't wait. I miss baseball, in all its forms.

From what my understanding is, it was pretty clear that most, if not all of them benefitted from it. Bob Costas was on CNN discussing this and further namechecked Carlos Beltran, who is taking over at the Mets, as being heavily involved.
Essentially the easiest tell is that when they identified anything that was offspeed, there was some sort of noise made from the dugout to alert the hitter and if there was no such bang/noise then they would know it was a fastball. There was more, but even that is pretty concise and very handy for a hitter to know.

Yeah, for me the big question is whether they also did something as of yet undiscovered for pitchers, since admittedly they had a tremendous pitching staff. But in my experience, people willing to bend the rules, cultures willing to bend the rules, usually don't do so just in one isolated way. We may never know.
Hey Fredrick
01-16-20, 10:45 AM
The GM and Manager took the brunt of it but everyone else got off light. $5 million fine is a joke but it's the max you can fine the owners as determined by the owners. Nice. Nothing for the players who benefitted from it. Draft picks in baseball are the least valuable of any sports league, especially if you have money, so no biggie there. If I were an Astros fan I'd be fine with the punishment considering it got them a WS title.
https://twitter.com/MattGelb/status/1217891275791310849
Beltron essentially stepping down (or being stepped down/fired) from Mets, after being implicated in Astros scandal.
Also Bregman, Altuve & possibly Reddick also now being embroiled, for wearing vibrating patches on their bodies that were activated to inform them of pitches from stolen signs. So perhaps another chapter in all of this is yet to be revealed.

Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. The King . Yep, 1 win and 8 losses with an ERA of 6.40 at a salary of $27,857,142.
Life is too short for baseball.
Sorry to have posted my last post in Shoutbox but since the Picasso look to the forum took effect I couldnt access anything at all in the Miscellaneous section. I just.figured out I could search for the thread in site engine and have bookmarked it now.

Not that I'm enjoying this Astros thing (maybe a little bit) but some of the quotes players are dropping at camp are gold. Trevor Bauer's math is solid.

Yeah, you also don't break the rules and risk your reputation for something you don't think helps. Really dumb statement by Crane.

Tatis in the first round? Idk about that....
I simultaneously share your skepticism, but will not be surprised at all if he returns that level of value.

Yeah, you're a "snitch" for exposing the violation of rules in an endeavor which is literally people collectively accepting rules.

I just bet $200 to win $50 that the first batter of atsros regular season doesn't get HBAP, starting to regret it. Boys are heated
 That's a wild bet.

Usually I'm on the other side of these bets, but I figured the odds were good enough. I don't think Angels will get a picther ejected just to make a statement in Houston. They do have openers fairly often so

He’s just bitter because The Red Sox were also implicated in the sign stealing. And considering he only retired, what 4 years ago? There is the chance he was also complicit.

Spring softball season officially canceled. :(
Hopefully summer doesn't follow. I was so excited for this year, was planning on playing on more teams than ever before, and now a third of the season's just wiped out.

Is there gonna be any type of a baseball season this year?
Ugh! Doesn't look promising...
https://www.si.com/mlb/video/2020/06/04/mlb-rejects-mlbpas-114-game-proposal
Well there was a baseball season last year, for 60 games. This season should be a full normal season, right? Right?
I'm looking forward to the Tampa Bay Ray's TAMING the A.L.bEast again this year :)
Good question re: season length. The NHL basically restructured everything, and shortened their season, for this upcoming year, but obviously baseball's starting a bit later. I will not be surprised if they play a shortened season, though I suspect it'll be twice as long (or more) than last year.
A lot will depend on how the vaccinations go, I expect.

I can see slightly longer season this time around, but not a full season. This all depends on how the next few months shake out of course, as you mentioned already regarding the vaccinations.
What do you think of the Pirates Bell trade? And do you think Musgrave is next?
Bell trade is necessary. Got back some decent talent, not sure if Bell's gonna be valuable going forward, unlikely to factor into a contending team.
Musgrove, more plausible he could stick around long enough to be useful, but I get it if they want to move him, too.

Yeah, I bring up Musgrove because there were trade rumors previously involving him iirc.

Wow, that gave me flashbacks to watching the NY Mets in the late 70s and early 80s. I hope you guys had a better season than they did.

So the mock drafts for fantasy baseball are open. Now a normal person would think the end of January is too soon, whats the point if I don't know my draft position, or why bother because you never get the same people when the real draft occurs - AH HA! Which is precisely why doing mocks for months ahead of time pays off! I'll know who I won't be getting. :yup:
Yeah.. when you get Clayton Kershaw in Round 20 during a mock draft, it kind of slams home that I'm wasting my time :(
