This new ABC sitcom is about a large Catholic family in the 1970's. The pilot focused on pre-teen Jack Cleary, wanting to audition for a production of Man of La Mancha despite strong objections from Mama (Mary McCormack) and eldest son Lawrence (Sam Straley) coming home from the seminary and announcing he's not going back. It's sort of an extra-economy size version of The Goldbergs. except it takes place in the 70's and not the 80's. The parents aren't clingy and naggy like The Goldbergs...there was one very funny scene where son Eddie (Caleb Foote) brings a new girlfriend to meet Mom and Mom tries to talk the gir;l out of dating Eddie. McCormack is solid, but I found this pilot pretty unremarkable and I might give it one more episode.

I'm not a big fan of "The Goldbergs", but I watch it for the nostalgia stuff. I thought "The Kids are Alright" was a bad copy of "The Goldbergs", basically a "wannabe" show. (And if it's not somehow connected to "The Goldbergs", they should sue the writers/creators of this show because it has too much in common with "The Goldbergs" to be someone's original idea.)

I gave up on this show after just 1 episode.

Ep 2 was slightly funnier than ep1 but the committee's still out on this one...loving Mary McCormick though.

BIG mistake on episode 8...yes, I'm still watching...anyway, the episode was titled "Christmas 1972" and there was a scene where the mom and dad were watching an episode of Bewitched which featured Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York. Dick York had left the show long before 1972. Further injury was added when the mom mentioned Tabitha and Adam...Dick Sargent was playing Darren when Adam was born.
