View Full Version : School of Rock

School of Rock was a ton of fun! It's great to see a cast who are really enjoying themselves, and Jack Black is obviously having a ball, as are the very talented young kids whose excitement at being in a movie is palapable.

The film is written by Mike White (The Good Girl), and directed by Richard Linklater (Before Sunrise, Waking Life, etc.). Both are quite talented, and here they really let it rip. The film is exuberant, off-the-wall, and very funny. It has a few peaks and valleys, but Kong was smiling or laughing pretty much throughout the whole movie.

Go see it!

Okay class, did everyone complete Professor Kong's homework assignment by carrying your little butts to the theater and watching the movie School of Rock which opened today?

If you did then please don't hesitate to sing its praises.

I was gonna see it, but I ended up seeing Lost in Translation for a third time instead. I don't regret it.

I will begin the singing. This movie was awesome!!! Jack Black absolutely owns every scene of this movie. The use of real kids and not trained actors was very cool. Their talent with their music and the acting added so much. Very fun movie. An actual funny movie you could take your kids to that will please kids and adults alike.

This was SOOOOO wonderful. I had such as good time at this. I had very small expectations for the film (despite several postive reviews), and I LOVED this film. Easily one of the most entertaining (and thus, best IMO), this year. Everyone really needs to see this wonderfully funny, entertaining movie now. I kid you not....SEE IT!!!! :D

As a sidenote: I catalog every movie I see. I'm getting mixed results as to the correct title of the film. Is it The School of Rock, or just School of Rock? Thanks.

Beale - What do you mean you catalog every movie you see?

I keep a record of all the films I see (not how many times, but rather which films I see and which I like. Its sort of a way of checking myself and making sure I don't overlook movies).

I write them down in a little book I started, I put a check next to the ones I like, and an x to the ones I dislike.

Kinda weird....but.....

This was probley one of Jack Black's best movies. The movie was full of fun and excitement and to see how well the kids and Jack worked together put a smile on my face. There was funny parts and sad parts. Up's and Downs but overall I give this movie a 10/10 :)

Jack Black is da man! I love that guy, he is so f'n funny. He's kinda cute too in a weird dorkish kinda way (I'm not gonna get in trouble for saying that, am I? LOL). heh

Anyway, my bf and I have been arguing over which movie to see next, SOR or Pirates of the Carribean (again). The more good stuff I hear about SOR the more I think we need to see that.

Sweet - glad to hear it lives up to the hipe (sp).

I just thought I'd bump this back up since I've just seen it a couple of times on video.

This was so much fun to watch...especially with the kids. I wasn't crazy about Jack Black in Shalllow Hal, so I wasn't sure what to expect....but I loved him in this. I also loved Joan Cusack and the kids. Definately fun to watch with the family.

This was a great movie--very fun and appreciate-able in a late 20s, early 30s something way. Jack Black has a way of encapsulating failure and making it look fun. :D Gotta love the guy! (And it always helps to have JOAN CUSAK!) She does a really good snide humor.

Am I the only one who wanted the girlfriend OUT????? I wanted to reach in the screen and strangle her myself. .. .

School of Rock was a very good movie. Of course it's dictating what we already know that great rock music began and ended in the 60's & 70's today its a whole lot of mega size superstars of empty music.
I loved this movie.

So true. The new alternative/modern rock is edgy and interesting in new, different way, though, wouldnt you say? Rock music will never be quite like "that" again. The nice thing about music is that its timeless.

I'd give it 2_5 out of 5

When I rate films, I rate them how I see them and like them....there is no such thing as overrating them.

Jrs, you give films like King Arthur, I, Robot, Anchorman, and The Notebook a near perfect rating. And then you give perfect masterpiece ratings to: Napolean Dynamite, Spider-Man 2, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I mean come on Jrs, very rarely does a new film appear that is even close to being perfect, and I mean really, are films like Spidey 2, Potter, and Napolean really that great? Admit it jrs, your probably the easiest member to please when it comes to new summer films.

Rock music has never come close to the great musicians of the 70's and 80's and I say musicians because there are no more. Music is so prefabricated today and a lot of really great rock artists of the 70's and early 80's will remain forever edged in a different time. Because no one can make that music again. Sadly.

Id say Jack Black's character was a man out of time, then, wouldnt you? :D I watched the movie and thought, "hey--he's stuck in the 80s! I know that feeling!" The movie a great source of amusement for me.

I do think there are music makers out there right now, its just that they are "diamonds in the rough," if I can spout a cliche. :p And have you ever noticed that every generation makes that same claim to fame? :D (uh oh. I might be wading into deep water here! ;) :D)

As an aside, I find also that a lot of today's "pop" music is nothing more than a gateway into the older, better stuff.

I might have gone overboard with Potter....but yes Spidey 2 and Napolean are that great. As I said, I do not like "every" film - as either a masterpiece nor close to it. I am not going to admit to something that has no FULL meaning

No the rock musicians of the 70's and early 80's will never again be; yes every generation has their musicians. However now its the image and not the music. We really never had the exposure to musicians other than going to their concerts now if the person looks good so does the music. Image is everything now.

I'm sorry, but it's always been more about image than anything. Back then, being a talented musician was more lucrative. Today it does not matter. That is the only difference.

And, additionally, we only hear the great everlasting music from those eras. There was just as much **** then. I can think of very few hippy songs that don't suck. Similarily, I can think of very few songs that were popular in the past 10 years that didn't suck. Hell, past 20 years.

For those of you are interested, reverse shot has just published their SUMMER EDITION (http://www.reverseshot.com), which focuses [almost] entirely on Richard Linklater.

The highlight, of course, is the THREE-PAGE INTERVIEW (http://www.reverseshot.com/linklater1.html) with Linklater, in which he comes across as intelligent, laid-back and even kind of wise.

Okay, this movie was not as good as i expected. Jack Black gave his usual funny performance as a substitute teacher, but that was about it. The storyline was crap and all they did was get a bunch of kids to dress up and play the musical instruments. My top 3 favorite Jack Black movies are as follows:
1. Orange County
2. Shallow Hal
3. Saving SilverMan
Anyways, i'm out for now!

I have seen School of Rock two times in the movies, and I have it on DVD. I thought it was a great flick. Someday I will write a reivew about it. That movie is "The Man" ok well maybe not, but it was good hehe. I really liked the parts when they played the music. But my favorite is when "Mr. Snepbly" finds out they can play and he tells the kids to pay the things he tell them hehe good movie.

It was good except the drummer and the bassist were fakes.... The guitarist and the keyboardist were real though... The movie was decent. One of Black best roles.

The Taxi Driver
08-12-04, 01:52 AM
i heard the drummer was really like 14 year old who just looked young cuz they couldnt find a 10 years old kid who could play the drums really good or something like that. i did like this movie alot but it was alittle fake. there is no way a person could get away with pretending to be a teacher and teaching them music. And i dont think pillows are going to sound proof a room. And when they called the cops on him, he really should of been thrown in jail not just sent home.

MyRobotSuit
08-12-04, 02:41 AM
Yeah, that'd make for a better family movie. He goes to jail and the kids go back to lessons. Good one.

The Taxi Driver
08-12-04, 07:58 AM
well im just saying if they made him go to jail it would be more realistic but i like that he didnt. because that would be a lame ending.

Memorable Quotes:
>
Dewey Finn : Your kids have all really touched me, and I'm pretty sure that I've touched them.
>
Dewey Finn : Ok, here's the deal. I have a hangover. Who knows what that means?
Frankie : Doesn't that mean you're drunk?
Dewey Finn : No. It means I was drunk yesterday.
Freddy : It means you're an alcoholic.
Dewey Finn : Wrong.
Freddy : You wouldn't come to work with a hangover unless you were an alcoholic. Dude, you got a disease!
Dewey Finn : Hmmm... hmmm... What's your name?
Freddy : Freddy Jones.
Dewey Finn : Ok, Freddy Jones, shut up!
>
Dewey Finn : Those kids are infected with a very rare disease. It's called "Stickittodamoninosis".
Battle of the Bands director : Really? I've never heard of a disease like that.
Dewey Finn : You're lucky. It's Hell.
>
Dewey Finn : You don't have to worry about me because I'm a hard-ass. And if a kid gets out of line, I got no problem smacking them in the head.
>
Dewey Finn : Give up, just quit, because in this life, you can't win. Yeah, you can try, but in the end you're just gonna lose, big time, because the world is run by the Man. The Man, oh, you don't know the Man. He's everywhere. In the White House... down the hall... Ms. Mullins, she's the Man. And the Man ruined the ozone, he's burning down the Amazon, and he kidnapped Shamu and put her in a chlorine tank! And there used to be a way to stick it to the Man. It was called rock 'n roll, but guess what, oh no, the Man ruined that, too, with a little thing called MTV! So don't waste your time trying to make anything cool or pure or awesome 'cause the Man is just gonna call you a fat washed up loser and crush your soul. So do yourselves a favor and just GIVE UP!
