View Full Version : Song of the day

Hi I'm hoping to start a new musical thread here. This is a little similar to "what are you listening to today" - but different for a couple of reasons
1- The song you post is not just a tune you enjoy hearing - but has a real meaning to what you are going through this day. It could be a song to a loved one, a reaction to something on the news that affected you, or just what the song means to your experience of the day- a gripe, a grin, a birthday greeting. I would encourage you, if you like, to also write a sentence or two as to why the song is important to you today- but not necessary.
2- To be quite frank, my device has difficulty posting to the "what are you listening to " thread- there's so many videos - I can't always post there - so my new thread is not only meaningful -but just like Ralph Cramden's handy kitchen slicer- practical too ;D
I'll go first:
I went to a song circle yesterday - where different performers take turns at singing- and first heard this beautiful song. Sitting with a bunch of friends on a lively spring day who wanted nothing more than to sing their hearts out- I am moved to wish all my friends, present past and future- the feeling of 'home' in this song:

So today is a rainy day. And I have some paperwork that is due - or overdue- and I'm worried if I can get it done in time, and if I can get to the post office in time , and what to make for dinner, and do I have time to shop for food, especially in the rain?!?!???
And then I thought-
"There should be sunshine after rain. These things have always been the same.
Why worry?"
So today's song showcases the duo that taught everybody else how to sing harmony:

Thanks for posting your song SeeingisBelieving. This is just the kind of post I was hoping to see/hear. I am sorry you are having a Groundhog Day syndrome of too many sunny days lol . But your song, with its great lyrics of irony and dark humor - should, I hope- like any good blues song- give a bit of relief. And fortunately for you , you live on a part of the planet where the rain will soon enough' pour its misery down. ' Have a good soggy day.

Thanks for posting Ultraviolence-,your nostalgia was a new discovery to me- I looked it up- who knew that a song from a video game could- rock!
Maybe the next song will cheer you up Ms. M. Today was the first nice day we had after months of winter- blue skies, mild temps in the seventies, trees that were bare 2 weeks ago now as green as Kermit the frog- and the air fragrant with the sweet scent of honeysuckle.
Maybe I'm a simple lady, but that's all I need to make me......happy-

He has said that he doesn't really write the songs himself, they come through him. He has profoundly influenced and inspired every musician and lover of music who came after him- me too. He wrote this song at 21; how did he know how a man might feel about his world and his convictions -55 plus years on? Bless your muse, yourself and your loved ones- and Happy 76th Birthday to you

This song always cheer me up:D

Talk about being cheered up - the other day a guy drove by me as I was walking out of the supermarket, and gave me one of those old fashioned, old school 2 note, unmistakeable 20th century Wolf Whistles! And I gotta tell yas all, I was thrilled. Not to offend any feminists in the audience here, but it's nice to know if you're a gal of a pcertain age.....ah....well.....ahem......let's just say born before the 21st century- it's great to feel someone out there thinks ya still 'got it' - even if 'it' is now..... suitably seasoned. ;D
So here's a song in the spirit of this day by one of my fav old time country stars. And I ll tell ya, if the guy in the 'hot rod Ford' looked anything like skinny sexy Hank, I 'd
be more than happy to hear him say:

Sometimes a day doesn't go as you planned. Was supposed to join a friend on a day trip to a nature preserve, where a waterfall flows and the hills are abloom with wildflowers. Got derailed by some unexpected last minute chores and must-dos and feeling pretty miserable about this wasted day.
Found myself late in day at a shopping mall picking up some musts and a get well card for a friend. I looked up from the parking lot to see a not too distant hill planted with evergreens. Upon the blue sky were swirls of multi colored clouds, behind which a fat happy orange orb of sun shone. My bare face and arms, released at long last from the toils of winter, were gently swept by a breeze as soft as an angel.
And I thought- of in all places, a shopping mall parking lot- what a beautiful world we live in. What a beautiful gift this day has been.

Ihat was glorious, LL. have you ever thought of writing poetry?
lenslady
06-08-18, 03:35 PM
Thank you! Dani8. I had joined an ongoing poetry class/group some years ago. A dozen of us met in a restaurant, which it turned out, was more of a draw for me than the actual class. The leader came to the conclusion, and I didn't disagree, that what I was best at was not writing poetry, but these descriptive type essays, like the one you enjoyed here. I left the class, btw, when the group relocated to the library. But I'm glad you like these little paragraphs of mine.
I hope you enjoyed the music as well. I am inspired, amongst other things, by the beauty of nature and song. So you may see, thanks to your encouragement here; some more essays of lush gushing from me(and alas, Dani, we'll have only you to blame ;D)
And btw, please feel free to post a song of your own now and then, if the Muse so moves you. No poetry required. P
lenslady
06-08-18, 03:39 PM
If you're wondering what that final P was ; it was another typo wrested from me by dratted spellcheck and/or the playful evil gremlin that lives in my cyberspace.
I'm thinking of starting a contest to see if anyone can find a post of mine with NO errors.? Can't decide on a prize. Maybe a pic of some applied pie ;D
lenslady
06-08-18, 03:45 PM
PS noticed more typos!!!
Left out:
The leader called these essays of mine prose-poems.
And What was also omitted was:
I left the class, in search of a restaurant sans poetry. Hung out in music themed cafes and clubs instead, much better choice for me.

This was a Michael Jackson tune I wasn't so familiar with, but I can see how that driving beat and energetic song got you through the day. I love the way you describe how the music moves you with that crescendo - those words, in fact, set to an uplifting, bouncy rhythm- -sum up all that music can do- can you feel it?! oh my, yes- and enjoy your weekend.

This BB King / Eric Clapton / et al guitar session is so transcendent that it feels like Pope presiding mass directly in St. Peter's Basilica. Like a choir of Angels making musical piece out of Book of Revelation. I don't wanna impose however check the faces of listeners, they are definitely nothing but happy on that set. As I am despite of fact I didn't make it to BB King EU tour on time due to his departure. Well I am pretty sure dearest Riley you doing your vibrato in heaven now and giving your gift in full.

Terrific- never heard this jam before. Loved your way of describing how the music moves you Nestorio_Miklos. Also loved the look on BB 's face about halfway through- just so glad to be playing with all these guitar luminaries, as if he's forgotten that he's the reason they are so inspired. Like a kid in a candy shop.
Never got to see him in person alas- though I' ve seen Clapton and that's as close to guitar heaven as you'd want to be. . But BB's gone now. And the BB King Blues Club just closed up this spring.
Well here's the thing. I ' d like to think there is a heaven, indeed. And folks like BB should be there now. I would n't be surprised if all dogs go to heaven, not atall. Cats too. But don't expect to see your favorite car up there. No sirree.
No inainimate objects go to heaven.
Exceptin' for Lucille. No doubt Lucille is right up there with BB in heaven too, and the two of them are having a grand old time- just singing their songs. But of course it's not like Lucille was really just a hunk of metal - as you could plainly hear and see here- she's been very much alive.
I keep reading the title as soup of the day. I must be desperately wait g for Jerry Seinfeld. 🐢🐝🌷

Lol Dani8 well I love soup AND music. I actually know 2 songs about soup, but don't like either enough to post here. But I got to thinkin'-why not a song about food.
Which this almost is -sorta. See, do you remember we were talking on another thread about Meryl not being gifted in humor. Well I can think of one exception- in the movie Heartburn (spoilers here friends) when she talks about being in a dream and waking from a dream- and then smashes a cake in her two timing husbands face at a dinner party. Perfect brilliant comic
timing. Perfect-and when she boards the plane with a baby and toddler in loving tow; you KNOW (no Gone With the Wind question here)- she is going to be just fine.
And for a perfect song to end a movie , not just this movie but for any movie, I would say this one by Carly Simon.....takes the cake.

Yeah, these guys did it for me. I mean the blues with a Tuareg style. That's just crazy! This music makes me think. Sometimes we are just sleepwalking and living our lives unnoticed. Don't you wanna leave your signature for generations to see? Please distinguish your talents and make people to see them! Just like Earl Nightingale said: "Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway". It might sound like a cheap philosophy quote however it's vy true. I'm adding the lyrics to this song:
There was a time
I lived fulfilled.
Life taught me that
It can often change.
The one you find in solitude
Is prisoner of egotistical desires.
I have a friend I can trust
Who quenches the thirst
That burns in my heart.
I walk in his footsteps
Pursuing memories built
On a dune that’s always moving.
no sleepwalking,
don’t keep me apart
I’m through sleepwalking,
god be in my heart
no more sleepwalking,
been asleep too long
no more sleepwalking,
keep me with you god

Nestorio_Miklos - I never heard of them before. Turns out they are Grammy winners and were fans, by listening to bootleg recordings - of my personal Muse, Bob Dylan
The lyrics are beautiful - a poem.
Well I noticed something - the lead guitarist in the band is playing his guitar upside down. That is, he's playing a right handed guitar left handed- without re-stringing it.
So did the beloved folk singer Elizabeth (Libba) Cotten. The song I'm about to post has been covered by everyone from Dylan to Chris Smither to The Grateful Dead. She started it as a lullabye for her grandchildren, who loved it so they begged her to put words to it. A simple performance here, but you can hear the love in her voice.
And btw, she was first discovered by a once young man you may have heard of- when she was the maid for the family of Pete Seeger.

Thus week I ' m hoping to go to a couple of events where I may run into people I haven't seen in years. This song, brilliantly crafted by the gifted writer/guitarist Chris Smither - is a clever rumination on the passage of time ( by someone much older than I btw but I get the gist)
Chris is a personal favorite of mine - in the style of 'roots' music I very much enjoy - who I've seen perform. several times - and the percussive 'tapping' you hear is not a snare drum- the man brings his own floor to concerts - big wooden circular slab - and taps out the rhythm with his feet.
If you haven't heard of him, he 's written hit songs for people like Bonnie Raiit.
Well anyways, if I feel a little older after seeing these folks ( I mean I don't think I look that much older after 5- 10 or so years, do you?) I know .... I' ll be home soon.

Thanks I. Rex. Was finally able to find time to listen to the 'recent' posts. Gray day today, so the BB/Clapton piece fit the overcast mood of the day. Two guitars talking. Talking back and forth. Talking to each other, by the end - underlining each other 's thoughts.
I realized the Ramones, after second hearing, were top notch of the headbanger bands.
@akexkevin . When I was listening to this I kept feeling it was like a film score. Name was not familiar to me. Then researched the musician, he was Pakistani, and a top star in 'world music'. AND he did contribute music to films. Admired by and played with a lot of musicians
I do know, including Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam.
These recent submissions make me think of an oft repeated, but so true, saying: Music IS the universal language.

Hi music fans - glad to see your songs posted during my brief absence - busy time for
me. (-plus I am usually out and about in summer)
So here's a few comments on the songs and music pieces.
Derek Vinyard. - this is a song I may not otherwise hear but for your post . I kept thinking of Dylan, who broke the mold on the June/moon/spoon lyrics tradition when he snarled at a false, malicious ex friend- "I wish that for just one time, you could stand inside my shoes, you don't know what a drag it is to see you."
Here, your narrator , being driven to the breaking point, succinctly snarls: "Shut up! "
Jmho , not all poetic lyrics have to be about moonlight and romance- and to me this song follows ol Bob in laying it on the line.
spookiemoviemania The Righteous Brothers Version of Unchained Melody is considered a classic by many. Not quite a torch song, but close, it tells of an aching heart and an undying passion.
The classical selections are great music - background or foreground music- I particularly liked the selections from Paganini ( rousing concerto) Bach, Chopin and Beethoven- extremely moving version of the Moonlight Sonata.
Carry on music lovers please f eel free to share whatever song in your heart your day inspires.
And to paraphrase General MacArthur- I shall post again.

So familiar but I 'm not realtly sure. David Bowie? Upbeat and sensual music, I will take another listen to this band.
I like Iva Davies- the music is really catchy, and also in the spirit of Beach Boys and Little River Band - the kind of music you want to put on the car radio as you zoom along to the beach ( in your little deuce coup?) open the windows and put the top down. Heck, if you don't have a convertible, get a Swiss Army knife and peel a hole in the roof;D
In my room is a little more introspective than the rest, but still has those great harmonies the BBs perfected. . Reminiscing has a sultry swing to it. I like this Aussie pop group and see they've been around for quite some time.
It's funny you're playing this music now spookie b/c you're heading into Oz winter, but this music is just right for me-,I feel like it's 'summer music' - and if I'm not at the beach or pool, makes me feel I' m there right now.

This song by Jean Redpath can almost be a hymn on how to live. Today was a beautiful Summer's day. My favorite season. But due to this severe allergy season, I wasn't as upbeat as I usually am in this glorious weather - and certainly not as energetic. Did not take my usual nature walk but sat outside my grocery store - that thoughtfully had provided a bench outside. As the sun went down, and the breeze cooled the day; I decided to just sit awhile and enjoy whatever I could of this day; the glimmering blues and greens of summer, the decorative roses and yellow lilies , families walking their smiling toddlers and a little sparrow too young to fear any harm from a human ( well he was right not to fear me) who hopped to my feet and looked up fo me like a little feathered angel.
How can one not be happy on a day like this? . How can I keep from singing? . Mhttps://youtu.be/_wRZb9zuqks

@lenslady (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=99178). It's funny you're playing this music now spookie b/c you're heading into Oz winter, but this music is just right for me-,I feel like it's 'summer music' - and if I'm not at the beach or pool, makes me feel I' m there right now.
Yes LL it is mid winter here now..cold and miserable.. all the more reason to listen to some of my all time fave songs to lift my spirits. You told me winter got you down. Well it does me too. I will now listen to Little River Band Greatest Hits. Imho their harmonising is the equal of the BBs.

A comment( for now ) on Gary Puckett. He has one of the greatest under-recognized voices in pop music. I see him as a being in line with singers like Tom Jones and Englebert etc but never, unfortunately, had the same long time renown. But his singing, imho, is of their stature and greater.
I went to a concert years ago, I think he was touring as an opening 'oldies' act - and he blew me away. Can't even remember who the other band was now, but hearing him sing in person was unforgettable - an unexpected pleasure.

PS- Jean Redpath was a Scottish singer. She was considered a folk singer ( and educator) but I think her voice and songs go beyond

I was walking down the road late afternoon to the 'corner store' about to buy some things when I ran into an older neighbor who I enjoy talking to. Mind you, this store is about 3/4 mile walk but it was such a lovely Summer's day-clear blue skies, mild 70's and a tender breeze - that I didn't mind walking. Neighbor ( friend really) and I got to chatting about everything from the weather to the price of paper goods to favorite cousins, and the day was getting late . So, despite her being older and a bit stiff in the joints, she insisted on hobbling to her car and giving me a ride to the store. It was a kind little nugget of good heartedness that made my day brighter.
Josh Ritter is a modern singer-songwriter in the roots tradition I so enjoy. I love his songs and the way he 'turns a phrase' And this song does not exactly reflect the event of this afternoon , but the unexpected gesture of human kindness just sort of expanded into the late day and made me remember it .
When the sun is low and aglow in the sky, when a person offers a dear gesture in friendship, when the mockingbird swoops and skips upon the branches above you, on the green road home- it makes you remember, if you care to, many friendships, many good people, even the caring heart of strangers - and one special loving person who came into your life when you thought the sun was going down- but he made you realize- the sun was coming up.

Didn't forget you spookie. I have to admit Judith and the Seekers was my favorite of your recent selections. Icehouse is new to me and like some of your other bands, just makes me feel my arm on the wheel and my other arm out the window, as I drive along to the driving rhythm. Kind of a yearning to the song.
Silence is golden- a catchy golden oldie - and a phrase, I believe. if honored, that may have saved more than one marriage ;D
But Judith really blew me away with this song and her voice. I remember the Seekers from Georgy Girl and a few other hits- but it seems that vocally, she truly mellowed like fine wine. A strong distinctive voice that actually grew better with time. Glad she's still out and about and sharing her music.

Thanks. spookie. I ( and some others) call it 'Roots' music , also could be called folk and/or singer-songwriter music.
Hope others enjoy this lovely song .

'Roots ' here refers to the 'roots' of music - for instance Dylan listened to traditional folk songs ( or those who wrote in that tradition) to craft his early music.
Music like old-timey( similar to bluegrass) blues, country , zydeco, English ballads- all inspired songwriters from Donovan to Johnny Cash, Nancy Griffith to the Avett Brothers , etc.
I will continue to use the term and hope you can forget whatever x-rated connotation it may have in Oz in this case.
Btw 'The Masters Apprentices' - new name to me- seemed to have some inspiration in that type of music as well, even tho they seem more of a pop or lite rock band. Enjoyed the melody and the clanging acoustic guitar.
Finally, spookie, no need to ask me whether I like each song , tho I' ll try to get to as many as I can. - what I'd love to know is why YOU like each song. Of course, there's no grades system here on Song if the Day , but I'm hoping you ( and others) to be inspired by an event , memory, mood or even a dream that you're experiencing and post a song that fits your day.

It happened again! Walking past a construction site ( actually I think they were laying telephone wire or somethin) I got a guy call at me:
Hey, beautiful mommy! Yes, you baby! - I'd like to take you out sometime and......" ( I'll leave this part out for our g rated audience)
I wasn't even trying to look 'all that' - just wearing some slim 3/4 length slacks and a casual but form fitting v neck.
Leave it to a good ol' steamy American summer to bring out the animal instincts in some people. And all I can say is - if the temperature soars and I have to walk by that site again, I'll know what I'm dealin' with.......
so .... Forewarned is fore armed....and think I'll wear that outfit again. ;D

A few comments for you spookie. I think I'd heard of Nick Cave but didn't know he was from Oz.The one thing that seems persistent in your tastes is that your selected singers - like Nick- all seem to have extremely good voices. As a person whose first muse is Dylan, I won't say that all my heroes can sing at the Sidney Opera house. But I wouldn't be surprised if most of yours ( like Gary Puckett ) could. Wonder if you sing or play an instrument.
Celtic Women , ironically, sang a version of the very first song I posted on this thread; Song for the Mira. And of course S&G defined the 'roots' sound of an earlier generation. Didn't see them both , alas, but did see Art in concert- a wonderful and gracious performer, of angelic voice.

I also love singer songwriters not as well known as S&G, but quite talented, and who are singing and playing in this traditional musical style; but writing in their own unique voice . Nothing but ripe succulent peaches, plums , berries, melons and tomatoes on my platter these days. Bursting with flavor and reminding me of our hardworking farmer recalls this song, written by a Canadian singer-songwriter I've seen many times in concert.
This song, in a bouncy waltz time, was written many years ago, but the resounding sentiment is still pertinent today in 'these days when everyone's taking so much, there's somebody giving back in."

I've been thinking of this song for a while. And this 20th century Canadian duo is not well known by most, but beloved by those who have heard their songs....like me, and a fellow named Johnny Cash, who liked them well enough to record itheir music himself.
I like this catchy, well written song which sounds like a mini movie set in a... well ...an old time dance hall.
But what impresses me most is their fiddler, Ian Guenther, who lines this song, and the duo's singing, so sinuously and gracefully, it's as if he's become a third voice of harmony and counterpoint. If I'd ever have the chance to pick a 'famous' musician to back me up when I sing , playing as if he's an angel cleaving to the clouds, I'd pick Ian.

Today was a nice long day; in the afternoon met a friend, strolled along a local botanical garden and later wound up at a fishing pier. It seemed the whole world showed up to enjoy this summer day: families having a picnic ' lunch' , children gathering around an ice cream truck parked conveniently by the pier, fishermen talking about their catch ( and lack of such) , lazing on their chairs with poles leaning on the rail.
As the sun set slowly on the water, colors bloomed and shimmered on the sky, the clouds, the water. Cell phones and cameras came out to capture the display. As the light dimmed and blued, you could see the little boats passing by, leaving trails of pale foam in the indigo water, and then the lights from the homes across the water twinkling in the dusk. How could anyone feel anything but happy when surrounded by happy people enjoying this beautiful world?
This song is really from before ' my time' but I've heard this timeless classic by the Platters often on the radio. And I was thinking of it as 'heavenly shades of night were falling' at
Twilight Time.

I enjoy hearing a lot of different styles of music. And though I enjoy classical music, opera has never been high on my list. But today was just one of those energizing days. I met with a few folks who are thoughtful, artistic genuine and generous people. It was a pleasure to pass the time of day with them. And the day was just one of those autumn days that make you glad to be alive; , temperate and mild, the trees still lush but starting to rim with gold, purple asters bursting from the ground, and birds trilling from the high branches.
And since I was feeling inspired, when I got home I decided to post this quite renowned aria-- because with a day like this and a song like this:
How can you not feel exalted?

Heard this at a recent song circle I attended , and found this quite moving . It sounds like a Celtic folk song, but the words were by the poet William Butler Yeats. He attributed it to an old peasant woman he heard, who used to sing to herself in the county Sligo. At any rate this touching ballad - about love and youth and time- has now acquired a life of its own; and has been recorded by many singers, from Marianne Faithful to the Clancy Brothers.
This version I found on YouTube is the one I like best:
