Following Netta's win for Israel last night, it's "next year in Jerusalem" ;)

Here, 5 personal favourites from Eurovision history--

France, 1977 winner, L'oiseau et l'enfant

Sweden, 1974 winner, Waterloo

Portugal, 2017 winner, Amar pelos dois

Germany, 1982 winner, Ein bisschen Frieden

This year's winner is the only song from the competition I've heard. If it's the best Eurovision had to offer 2018 I probably would have pierced my ears if forced to watch. Absolutely terrible song.
P.S. It always cracks me up to see Israel and Australia in this contest.

Why? It's already been explaiaall ned.
There might not be an Israel in a year so not gonna argue with you at this point.

Our favourites were Italy and France, each to their own.
(The French song is about a young child who survives the dreaded Mediterranean crossing that has claimed many refugee lives in recent times).

Fab countries, big Eurovision fans - great to have them on board.

I have nothing against them as countries, pretty much the opposite actually. It just feels weird to have them in a European contest, that's all.
And I haven't watched these in years as they've become so damn politicized.

It was great. All about love and not giving in.
And my country is full of peeps related to you, bless, so why begrudge it. Where are you from,?

Begrudge? Like I said I have nothing but respect for both of those countries. They're just not in Europe so I find it funny that they compete in a European song contest (politically I get Israel but why Australia - why not rest of the Commonwealth of Nations?).
I'm from Finland (zero points) ;)

In Finland Eurovision is kinda big too. Every year our media finds some way tell people how everyone is in love with our song and that we're one of the biggest favorites to win. Then the night comes and we're usually in bottom two (we have the second most last places and seven times we've missed the final including three years in a row 2015-17) :D

Last year I think it was we were in the top five or something. It was a nice song and he's a lovely guy. This year, equally lovely person and gorgeous song, we came 20th. Australia - any excuse for a party, especially with so much heartache in the world. The royal wedding is our next party and that started a few weeks ago. Wooooot

I wasn't a fan of the Israeli song but I guess it was the most memorably quirky. I liked the Swedish entry. Cannot believe so many people voted for that awful Moldovan song rather than Australia, UK or Ukraine. Finland and Portugal were pretty hard done by as well.
I didn't the chicken song at first but she's obviously very quirky and Eurovision loves quirky. I winced a bit everytime Ms White hit the high notes but the way she handled the security breach was phenomenal, and the whole country just about (except for the bigots) is proud of Jessica for showcasing the indigenous people here. And she was graceful about it. I love her.
Channel surfing and saw violin guy. Wow he sure can belt it out while dancing. Silly lyrics but he's pretty fit. Whooshka. Took my breath away.

I loved Israel's entry. I picked it from the semi's and was really pleased to see it win. If Cyprus had beaten it (which was a lot of hype I just didn't understand) I'd have been gutted. I disliked most of the songs that have been mentioned here. Sod all the political statements, make a decent song. Better yet, do something crazy or quirky. Or just odd. It's Eurovision! If I wanted to listen to the same kind of music as on the radio, I'd listen to the radio. I also liked Moldova's song. Love Moldova. They almost always put forward a proper Eurovision entry.
This is the least interesting Moldovan entry I can think of and it still has a rapper arriving on a scooter.

As for Australia and Israel (as well as a few other countries really. Turkey anyone?) being allowed to enter, it's because of the EBU. I think I'm right in saying that Australia, while not a current member, is an associate member, which is why they were allowed to take part. Plus, it's huge there, as Dani has said and so it's growing the brand. Were this opened up, I assume that any country could take part, so long as they were a member or associate member.

Nightwish, Within Temptation, EPICA, i wonder why they dont perform in these. They should blow pretty much every pew pew song that is sung in these competitions out of the water. And these are only the ladies! :)

I agree with you. Pretty much says everything about how I feel about those bands.

I've not heard anyone mention it, but then I look for this thread and see we do have some Mofo Eurovision fans.

Favourites? What will do well? Which should've made it? Anything you don't like?
No matter what Mans said, I thought semi final one was much better than the second. More songs I liked and more barmy staging and performances. The second felt a little pedestrian to me much of the time. So that's where the winner will probably come from. :(
I liked the Czech Republic most from the first semi and Switzerland from the second. I'd be ok with either winning, but I'd really like San Marino to take it. It's such a old school Eurovision song and, I have to admit, the fact that I think he looks like the ghost of Inspector Montalbano and my gf nicknamed him Right Said Dad puts it over the top for me. :D

I'd also like to see Iceland do well because one year feeds into the next on Eurovision. I don't think it's a shock that there are more off centre songs and performers the year after Netta won and if this won there might be a few more rock songs next year. I also read a quote where they said silence can be a protest. Please stand there for your three minutes and do nothing. I'd love that. It'd probably do more for them than winning will.

Just for those who can't remember or don't know what I'm talking about when I mention Netta.

Didn't think much of many from either semi-final this year tbh. Did like the Greek entry though, which is unusual 'cos I normally hate their songs, but I see it's 150/1 so undoubtedly won't receive much love and finish down the field. I could swear the Aussie gimmick of being on poles has been done before (or at least something like it)?

<3 You know what I found amusing, the members of Iceland protesting in support for Palestine. Looking the way they do and act, I recommend they take a walk through Tel Aviv, and then take a walk through areas of Palestine and see what happens... that support will soon go out of the window.
Enjoyed Eurovision last night, haven't watched it all the way through for years and decided to this year in support of Israel's right to host, and add to the audience numbers. Glad to see nothing in connection to protests ruined the night, great security.
And look, the UK had another bland song and singer but not that bad to come last! what a surprise... :D:dizzy: <3

Oh, boring Netherlands won. :( Not boding well for next year.
I was sure that Madonna would be bad, but I really had no idea. Wow. Even 8,000 hardcore Eurovision fans couldn't get themselves up for a music legend and gay icon after she finished that. Tragic.
Was surprised, but quite pleased, to see N. Macedonia do so well. With the juries, at least. My sister didn't like it and was worried it'd do well, but I told her not to worry - the public vote would take care of it.
Do you remember how the jury system was supposed to stop the political voting? Well, looks like there's still a little way to go with that. Better though.
Did Iceland make it out of the building alive? My sisters dog barked and growled every time he sang. :D

I quite liked Netherlands and so glad it beat Sweden, now they had a boring song! ;)
Countries I enjoyed on the night: Netherlands, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Australia, Italy and Azerbaijan. Can't really remember the others.

Is it bad I was hoping she would fall down the stairs again... they were all very careful on the night.

I didn't care for it either, but I think Sweden was hurt by the sound system at the venue. Anything which had/needed a bit of bass was at a disadvantage, IMO, because it sounded tinny from semi 1.

No love for San Marino? That was the one I wanted to win. Proper Eurovision, harking back to the 70's and 80's when pop music ruled and the Europeans weren't often very good at it. Which created examples like that, which was brilliant, IMO. Also helped that he looked like the ghost of Inspector Montalbano ala Kenneth Cope in Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)

No. I'll bet almost every British person who watched it was praying for that to happen. Probably not limited to the Brits, but I'd bet the percentage was higher. :D

Sound system issue for Sweden for sure.
I used to like the contest, but not anymore.
