Visually the film is OK.

It's interesting to hear this, since not just this film, but all of the director's work, seem to always be praised for their cinematography and visuals. I guess I can understand how the colour palette could turn people off.

Maybe it's a culture thing but I felt that people were bit too ready to take the blame for other people's crimes.

It's not a culture thing, it's just that money can stimulate the mind.

In the first situation, Eyup probably could've lost his only job, had he not accepted the politician's offer, not to mention they definitely have history. His family also doesn't look in that good of a financial situation, especially since the mother probably earns little money in her small job. Plus, the money that the politician is offering is no joke.

In the second situation, I'd say it was more understandable than the initial one. The guy is broke, doesn't have a place to live or sleep well in (not like prison is any better), and is easily in more need of the money than Eyup was.

I'm not sure if I liked the ending either; it felt a little too easy solution to all the problems especially considering that it replicates the initial cause of the issues. I would have preferred more tragic ending.
Firstly, we're not even sure if the guy has accepted the offer, in fact, it's not even implied, it's simply left in the air. Secondly, I wouldn't call it a solution either, since the family's problems are only more complicated by the end of the movie. An easy solution and ending would've been a suicide (which I'm glad the director didn't decide to go for).

This Hall of Fame really was just the misery Olympics
No wonder I'm loving this Hall Of Fame.

Johnny doesn't have any sort humanity so he fails to feel real...which you can still make a good film with that as long as you ground that plot with other characters that seem human.
I'm a little confused, you're arguing against the idea of "I didn't like the movie because the character isn't a good person", by saying that Johnny isn't humane, therefore he isn't realistic? Let's actually say that Johnny does indeed lack any sort of humanity (which I don't believe to be the case AT ALL), what makes that unrealistic though? and what exactly about the rest of the characters that makes them less human than humans? I guess a few of them are exaggerated, but not nearly enough to make them aliens.

I just find it quite hard to believe, how anyone would actually believe, that the characters in Naked don't exist at all...

The film has a point and the characters go on a journey.

but their is a point to it all.

The biggest problem with Naked isn't that it's self absorption misery porn...but that it's to lazy to have a structure and plot to it.

I'd say Naked definitely has a point and a message, whether if it's just spouting how much humanity is a cracked egg, or doing the opposite and giving glimpses of hope, or studying a character such as Johnny who can only give as well as he gets, etc...It certainly has a point.

Regarding the movie's structure, do you have the same problem with films such as La Haine, Do the Right Thing, etc...because they definitely have similar structures. A man wandering through the streets of London, and getting ping pong'd by life, is still a sort of structure. His journey is the plot.

My goodness, alot of people hate this film! I didn't though.

This film tells of the people who live in those very scummy areas of cities, people who are generally not very productive or have a shred of decency. I didn't entirely hate the character of Johnny like everyone else seems to. He has a nice air of sarcasm to him and his philosophical debates are very interesting. He is a total jerk though even with those qualities: He sexually harasses women, he thinks he's intellectually superior to everyone who doesn't agree with his opinions etc. The music is beautiful. The direction and writing from Mike Leigh is impeccable (Some scenes are really beautiful, the dialogue isn't boring etc.). The best scene was definitely Johnney talking about the apocalypse with the security guard.

If you hated the film and want to see something better, I couldn't recommend enough 'Secrets and Lies' by the same director and writer. The tone isn't at all nihilistic and the characters are actually likable.

Great nom Neiba

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006) Tom Tykwer
46603

This film was truly a perfume. A perfume that will make you gravitate towards the road leading to the nearest library, where the novel (which the movie is based on) resides. The story that the film and novel tells, shows us the extremes that some artists are willing to go to, in order to fulfil their sick and selfish artistic pleasures. This basic concept is portrayed in the most ambitious, challenging, and interesting manner. The storytelling is so good, to the point that I left the film with immense satisfaction, despite the mediocre execution I just witnessed. Most of the credit for all of the latter, should go to none other than the writer of the novel himself, which is why I'm totally committed enough to peruse the actual book, especially since the story can only perfectly work by using one's own imagination.

The vast majority of the complaints the film gets, is due to the "outlandish" conclusion, but personally, I didn't find it to be as outlandish as it is claimed. The whole story demands a whole lot of suspension of disbelief, and the ending is no different. In fact, I found the ending to be quite fitting, fulfilling, and most importantly, the most logical way to go, of course in the context of the story. I mean, what exactly is so crazy about it, that makes it stand out against all of the craziness that came before it?

The movie is filled with all kinds of different problems, but thankfully, none of them came close to detaching me from the happenings. As much as I hate to say this, about the guy who made one of my favourite films of all time (Run Lola Run), I do believe that in the hands of a better director, this could've been a masterpiece, even a classic! Not to say that the story and the story alone was the saving grace of the film. Not at all, it is still skilfully shot, funnily edited, carefully dressed, and greatly cast. I also respect the ambition and braveness of the film-makers, to turn such a bizarre tale into its cinematic form, despite how hard it should seem from the outside looking in.

I thought the lead severely lacked menace and charisma. What great bad guy lacks those qualities?
Grenouille is obviously no Joker, or Naked's Johnny, etc...He's a near illiterate weirdo, with no sense of social cues, so charisma should definitely not be one of his characteristics. As for menace, we see the world through him, so we have more of an understanding of why he does what he does, which I guess would render him to be less menacing, since the unknown is always the most frightening.

Another thing before I forget; did they all speak English in France back then? I'm not going to complain about that because it's not something I've ever noticed or complained about before. Anyway, I do think some authenticity is lost with the movie being in English. Or, maybe I was just searching for something.
The Pianist is also similar in that regard, but it's still seen as one of the greatest films out there (undeservedly I believe, but that's a discussion for a whole other time). Did it bother you in that movie as well?

At least in Perfume, I thought the different languages were a benefit, as they aided in the humour. Seeing Hoffman speak Italian, English, and French, in a single sentence, was definitely amusing. "Monsieur, Basta! Enough!"

Quills came to mind as an example, and I also thought of Quills because I think Joaquin Phoenix would have been great in the lead role here.
Very interesting. He doesn't come to my mind at all, when thinking about a character such as Grenouille. He's definitely capable of it though, as we've seen him metamorphose countless times.

I absolutely hated hated hated Dustin Hoffman in this. He is one of my all time favorite actors, and he probably had as good a 20 year stretch as any actor ever. Fast forward to the present, and I don't think he's done anything noteworthy in many years. I feel like modern film has passed him by, or he's taking the wrong roles, or something, because I'm just not seeing him the same way. I thought he looked ridiculous, like some kind of weird hobbit, but really all I saw was Dusty Dustin in some awful makeup.
See, I thought Hoffman was great, and quite frankly, no different than what I've seen from him in the past (The Graduate...). He always seemed to play his characters, with an exaggerated tone, and I saw no difference in this particular case. Nothing ground-breaking, but still stratifying and charming.

Some of you guys commented on how the film manages to portray the smells through the screen. Obviously, that didn't work for me, as I didn't mention it in my original post. In fact, that didn't even cross my mind while watching the movie, so it actually miserably failed in that aspect, but it's something that's too hard to genuinely convey anyways, at least to me.

A director that I think successfully achieves this, is Luca Guadagnino, in his films I Am Love, and Call Me by Your Name, but mostly in the former. He's easily the most sensual director I've ever encountered. The first and only time I could literally smell and taste dishes shown on film, was during I Am Love. Obviously Call Me by Your Name was a nominee, that's why I thought this was worth mentioning.

That is intriguing that the "scents" didn't come across for you. But I AM very glad to hear that it inspired you to read the novel, which I haven't and truly wish I had the leisure time to do just that.

You mentioned a couple of films regarding scent, one that comes to my mind is Chocolat.

I also didn't realize it was the same director who did Run, Lola, Run. Can't even count the times I watched it when it first came out and need to do a revisit of that one.

Mr. Freedom (1968) by William Klein
46630

Mr. Freedom is a spoof film, depicting everything wrong about the stereotypical American patriot and his philosophy. Actually, it's all of the latter, but amplified and exaggerated by a thousand degree. This results into the making of probably my favourite superhero movie of all time, and just like in the case with all of them, I don't have much to say and express. This time, it is due to the fact that I'm not that well versed with past or present America's politics. I only know enough about the country's political climate, to enjoy and appreciate all of the satire presented, but still remain distant and unenthusiastic. Regardless, the absurd characters, costumes, effects, mannerisms, dialogue, along with the dark humour, all help at making the film a warmer and more amusing watch. It's ably made as well, so there's definitely a chance I'll revisit it again in the future. This was a pretty cool nomination, that I wouldn't have discovered otherwise. Thumbs up from me

Those were some skinny blonde cheerleaders in Mr Freedom. Gawds! they were so stupid... and constantly jumping up and down as they followed Mr Freedom around the grocery story, that that scene cracked me up:p Even that picture of them is funny:D And I think I finally figured out what they symbolized too.
I'm glad you mentioned this, because I thought it was one of the funniest parts in the film too. I was also surprised to see Jeanne Dielman in this, she was great too. All of the characters were unique and colourful with their mannerisms, which was the movie's biggest advantage.

2) My comments about sloppy were objective. I don't think the film has much technical / artistic value. It is very simplistic sketch stretched to film length with bad acting, writing, directing and cinematography. It being a satire is no excuse for its flaws.
I like how you start off your point by stating that you're objective, then immediately follow that up with an extremely subjective sentence. I would also really like to know, what exactly is bad about the cinematography in Mr. Freedom, or simply, what do you consider bad cinematography to be?

You must note that this was a reply to an "accusation" of not being able to see the artistic merits of the film because of disagreeing its political stance (that's the objectivity referred here). I don't personally believe in literally objective values in something as subjective as art. What I was trying to say in that quote was that 1) I was indeed able to evaluate the films artistic and technical qualities and 2) I didn't see anything of great value in my evaluation.

What was wrong in its cinematography? I can't go into specifics without rewatching (which I don't intend to do) but it basically looked and felt like a cheap television sketch. That sort of style (if you can call it such) works to a degree and is quite mandatory for TV-shows that have multiple different sketches per episode but it becomes a chore when stretched to a full movie length.

I guess we'll leave it at that, since I can't do much with a comparison to TV sketches, especially since I don't know what they look like in your eyes either. Maybe the not so great quality of the copy of the film that's around, may have helped at that? I personally thought the cinematography, while not exceptional, was still pretty neat, with its nuanced composition, and at times symmetrical framing. It had a sense of purpose, which is more than what we usually get.

Three Monkeys

I think this might be my first Turkish film, and I liked it. The direction is pretty great, considering the abundance of lovely looking shots (Some of them silhouetted). I was expecting that the dirty-looking cinematography was going to bug me but it didn't, it added to the mood of the film. There's one thing that's really holding down the film for me thought and I can't put my finger on it: It's either the pacing or the length of the film. We have lots of scenes in the film where nothing is really happening (Or sometimes nothing is happening). I think that was a terrible idea, the nice visuals kept me from getting bored though. I think the abundance of those scenes actually lessened the impact of scenes necessary to the plot (That intense af scene in the car, the ending etc.). I could imagine enjoying this film a whole lot more if it was trimmed to a shorter running time.

Cool nom 2007 meme.
