I saw you recently commented about inet access and passwords and such. Is this part of that?

Are you cutting access for reasons, or is it more being unfamiliar with the tech to get reestablished once you switch over/move?

To reply to your other thread on email... If it's an email account through yahoo, Google, hotmail, live, etc., then that goes with you. You can access those accounts anywhere so long you know your user ID/Pass. If you have an email through your specific internet service provider (Comcast, Time Warner, Knology, whoever) then that account probably closes when you end your service plan.

I use yahoo so I'm not tethered to a service provider to use email. If you use your provider's email system, then there may be a way to download your saved emails to your computer ...or even transfer them to a third party email provider such as Yahoo or gmail. Or whatever is popular now.

Way off topic I know. I keep meaning to respond over there but I'm lazy and eaily distra....

Yes, yntf. In short I'm being evicted (so my landlords can demolish this little shoe-box house I've rented for the last decade, build a McMansion to tower over the nearby bungalows, and give it to their daughter.)

Thanks for the info. I'll have to resurrect my old hotmail account. When I got Windows 10, I was assigned an "Outlook" account, but the Windows 10 e-mail system seemed to have some bug with "syncing" my e-mail addresses, and I found the only solution (to constant pop-ups telling me to sync my accounts which it then wouldn't let me do) was to only use one e-mail.

Ack!
Man, I am sorry to hear that. I hope you can quickly find stability after such a major change up. =/ especially considering it sounds forced.

My guess is your email is through Microsoft then. On that ASSUMPTION, you should still have it regardless of your service provider.

Might try to Google a few questions on the domain name to confirm. @hotmail or LIVE.com or whatever yours may be.

I'm really sorry to hear the news. Sometimes forced change can be the best, else we get too complacent with our patterns. I dunno. Just trying find a silver lining in this =/ sucks either way.

Do you mind me asking the timeline? I don't want to wake up one afternoon to find that mon capitaine has vanished. =(

If you use laptop or even mobile for internet browsing, there are tons of free WiFi spots available if your device(s) support it. McDonalds, coffee shops, most any dine-in fast foods probably. Most advertise it to bring kids in to buy food and browse the web. So yeah, that might be an option till you get your bearings.

I'm rambling in the wrong thread now about stuff you probably already know. Sorry about that!!

I'll most likely be disconnecting and moving my computer this weekend - moving day for furniture (to put it all in storage) is the 27th.

On complacency - I realize how complacent I became as I now try to pack. The weird thing is I'm dealing with "stuff" I "intended" to "get to" for the last 10 years. I sold stuff on eBay and at garage sales (those of my friend's parents who'd allow me to join them), but not nearly enough.

I've been thinking about this thing I heard on Hoarders once (not that I'm really a Hoarder): that many are actually perfectionists. They may be a perfectionist in the sense that they may need many hours just to arrange and order one small collection of items to the point where they are satisfied with it. (I can kind of relate to this.)

It sounds totally counterintuitive, but the idea is that they want things in perfect order and need lots of time to focus on working toward that kind of order, but often this work is stalled or halted by a trauma, death or personal loss. As gradual progress slows or stops, they begin to become overwhelmed by their stuff. Then it becomes an "all or nothing" situation where, since they can't have the perfection they desire, they give up trying to proceed gradually toward it.

This thread was supposed to be humorous (and sarcastic)... ;)

But thinking about traumas that seemed to have a snowball effect of gradually slowing me down:

2008 my pharmacuetical proofreading job ended - I wasn't fired, it was due to this ridiculous "2 year rule" thing where, if they don't hire you directly (and they weren't hiring anyone directly) they HAVE to get rid of you and replace you with another contractor.

Then my mom was diagnosed with cancer, she had surgery and required months of care to recover, and then I had to take her to radiation treatments everyday for a couple more months.
In the meantime my dad had several developing medical conditions (including increasing dementia).

2011, my friend Bill died (and I inherited his partner - a LONG story for another time). Bill was also my biggest client for my freelance landscaping / self-employment business, which soon had to be halted.

2014 my dad had a heart attack when I took him to a pre-admission testing for a surgery to remove a tumor in his colon (the surgery was canceled and he was never well enough again to resume seeking the surgery).
At that point I went from part time caregiver mode / part time freelancer to 24/7 caregiver mode for both parents.

In the meantime, I had people needing me to help them move, take care of their dogs & cats (multiple people in different locations, with multiple cats all at the same time), my friend Bill's partner had this emergency surgery and no one to take care of him or HIS cats afterwards -

At the same time I got Tophaceous gout (misdiagnosed at the hospital, and thus went untreated which left me crippled in my ankles to this day). So after 16 hours a day with my dad, I'm either on crutches, using a cane or limping, stopping at houses to feed cats & clean litter, I'm going to this other guy's house to clean this pump that was taking fluid out of his stomach, help him go to the bathroom, get him something to eat and feed his four cats and scoop all their litter boxes. And doing this routine every single day for months until this guy recovered enough to be able to somewhat care for himself.

During this time my oldest brother had some kind of mental breakdown, lost his job and basically went insane - thus becoming an additional burden at a time when what the family needed was help. (He's only slightly better now.)

It was kind of at this point where I really slowed down as far as my eBay business, doing any freelance work, exercising, paying attention to diet, or even cleaning my house. Opiod painkillers & alcohol were my only coping mechanism, which left me a drug addict.

Last year my dad finally passed away and I was set to try to begin to pick up the pieces... then my landlords told me to get out.

That's a really bad summary that doesn't begin to address the details, but it touches on a few major points that brings me to my current state.

Okay, as Steve Martin would say, "Enough comedy jokes!"

For whatever it's worth, you have my respect. I hope your absence here is minimal and that you find your way through these troubles, and back to your MOFO family and friends sooner than later.

Forged in fires of pain and despair. He arizes, no longer what he once was - now he is only sinew and darkness and dripping oily steam with a hunger for justice, a hunger for fear and a ravenous gluttony to taste the hypocrisy and mendacity that streams off the souls of who would kill thought. He seeks the minds of those who silence others and he seeks the minds of others who silence those. Mediocrity cannot tame him as he's picked up the trail of he who oppresses, those following the smell of the blood that leads them to the hearts of the infidels... He is Jihadi Hunter, the allpresense that brings the doom of the millenia and four centuries from the bowels of the past to pass judgement on the militant blight that threatens the present!

Regarding your name, I really thought Captain Steele Dossier was funny when you mentioned it the other day. But that may be too timely and rooted in the now to be relevant in a few months. My best bet is that everyone reading this knows someone who is popping, but have no idea that the person is using or is hopelessly hooked.

Like many, my story starts with an injury - in 1985, during a trip to Jamaica I went cliff diving at "Rick's Cafe." I was too scared to dive so I went feet first from about 70ft. I didn't keep myself straight, my legs came up and my head went back - so I landed in a seated position.

You can't believe what they show you in movies - hitting water the wrong way from a significant height is little different than hitting the ground. I had a giant bruise on the back of my legs and butt. That went away, but what didn't go away was my neck injury.

I went to 2 different chiropractors for 6 years. (Despite my neck being a lot better today, I've since decided to never have cervical adjustments again - they are too dangerous for that area of the spine and some data shows they can cause a type of stroke over time.)

It was actually my late friend Bill who gave me my first percocet - at a time I was out sick from work with a horrible neck spasm. I didn't think too much of them at the time - probably because I was only using them for an actual injury. He seemed to have a supply of them from various doctor visits and relatives he'd collect them from and we started using them recreationally.

In later years I developed actual slipped discs in my back (and have the MRI to prove it) - which became a convenient way to get more pills. It used to be I could just take them for pain or save them for a weekend, but now - if I have them, I will take one everyday until they're gone: that is addiction.

The supply however is not unlimited and they are very difficult to get - so when I finish a bottle I go through withdrawals and have to wait a couple months to try to convince the Dr. to prescribe more, but it appears with the epidemics of abuse and newer regulations, those days are coming to an end.

My dad use to go to a chiropractor. The doctor liked to talk, alot...and told him about his father who had also been a chiropractor. I'm guessing it was in the 50s or 60s? Anyway his dad was adjusting a patients neck and he broke it, the patient died on the table.

I always thought that was bad business for the chiropractor to tell that story....I went once with my dad to have an adjustment, and that was enough! It's gross having somebody twisting your neck around.

Back in the 1950s it was considered quackery and many in the medical field opposed it. Psychical therapy is the way to heal and strengthen back and neck injuries, not jerking the body around until the spine makes a popping sound.

Yes. My first chiro hurt me a couple times - I don't mean the normal soreness or after pain associated with adjustments, but from cervical adjustments that went wrong. I called them misfires. (It seemed like they couldn't really mess up an adjustment on my lower spine).

I first remembered hearing about the danger of cervical adjustments on Alan Alda's Scientific American Frontiers (for anyone who remembers that show).

Thanks for answering, mate. I'm popping but not sure I'm placed in the category of potential addict. Without a government authority these are 900 for a double pack and I doubt any addict is going to pay that although maybe. I dont even know what addicts experience when they stop these opiates cold turkey.

As for chiros, I saw them for years but always said if they touched my neck I'd kill them. I have fractures in my neck from an old injury but I've never had them treat my neck, and yes, I have heard of them breaking necks on the slab. No thanks.

My old karate teacher is a lecturer at University and I wouldnt even let him touch my neck but he was never a cruncher anywy. I started seeing a female chiro before xmas for chronic back pain and trusted her because she was one of his ex students. Well that was a huge mistake because some where along the track she became an old school cruncher. I knew I was in trouble the last treatment when I, someone with very high pain threshold, was screaming NO NO NO NO!!! She had to help me off the slab and into my car and how that neanderthal bitch let me drive home is beyond me. Thus started my 6 week holiday in hospital as an early present from santa and a lifetime of treatment at the hospital. Thankgod it's a good hospital and close by and my husband and wife team pharmacists will drop by after they close if I need but not much of a saving grace when I cant walk without a wheelie. I will NEVER see a chiropractor again, not that I blame her for this but if I saw her in the clinic carpark I would take much joy giving her five to the teeth.

As I said I'm not sure what it's like for recreational users but really glad you're off it. Must have got very exy. As for your other stuff and now having to move, all the best for you.

What on earth were these pet owners doing expecting you to look after their pets while you were going through so much family distress? I hope they were atleast paying you.

What on earth were these pet owners doing expecting you to look after their pets while you were going through so much family distress? I hope they were atleast paying you.

Kind of a situation where no one else know what others were doing;
My parent's neighbor with a dog asked me to house sit with the dog thinking I'm at my parents all day anyway, but I'd have a private place to sleep nextdoor - sleep WITH the dog that is, that was the whole point of staying there - the dog can't sleep on it's own = spoiled.
Once I committed to that, another friend says he's got to go away for a couple weeks on business and could I stop in for his cat, so it wasn't far and I agreed.
Then this guy John (with 4 cats) has this medical emergency and is rushed from his work to the hospital - get called to take care of his cats (I'm the former landscaper and still have keys to the house) - but on THIS date, one cat has a Dr. appointment and I always remember driving around to different vets (because I didn't know the cat's current vet), carrying the cat carrier in the pouring rain. I finally found the right place, but then there was a 4-hour wait!

And that was just the beginning, John was in and out of the hospital, but he had a surgery on some sort of hernia rupture so he couldn't care for his cats no less himself. So I was taking care of his cats and him for almost 4 months - which overlapped my other pet care duties.

This all kind of got dumped on me at a time when I'd told John I was too tied up with my dad to nursemaid someone else, but he made no plans when he had a chance and just relied on me - which made me feel I'd had about enough of him.

Another confession why I didn't just tell John he was on his own:
1. I really couldn't leave him in the lurch while so helpless and trying to recover, and he was the widowed partner of my former friend, (they sent him home about 4 times after which he'd have to go back to the hospital due to hemorrhaging & to have this stomach pump thing checked - it had an awful alarm on it! They never should have sent him home the first three times, esp. when there was really no one there to care for him.)
2. I did care about his cats (I'm not a total beast)...
3. But here's the clincher - since he'd just had a major surgery, the doctors were loading him up with month's worth of percocet where he was allotted like 6 a day, but would only take 2 a day - and I was getting the scraps! ;)

P.S. They did all pay and John paid in more than just more, but opioids!

Re: painkillers. It's always bothered me that people lump addiction to painkillers in with so many other substance addictions. Never seemed right, since it's something you might need, or be prescribed, or get hooked on almost out of necessity rather than as something elective or recreational. Seems like something good people can fall into easily.

Anyway, only advice I can give is to keep on going. Change is always scary, particularly if it feels like a step backwards, but we're all better at adjusting and making the best of things than we realize. When reality is simply dealt with directly, without complicated issues of pride or unneeded analysis about what a given change means or says or other big-picture questions like that, I think it becomes a lot more manageable. I hope you land on your feet.

You know it!
Most of it was doing side by side comparisons of those inserts you get with prescription drugs - seeing if anything changed from one version to another.
It wasn't even regular proofreading (looking for grammatical errors) like you'd do for a book - and where you might still be able to pick up on a story in the process.
It was about the most tedious thing I've ever done - it really required a Zen-like attitude.

Luckily the work was usually (but not always) sporadic - so a lot of time was spent trying to "look busy." (see the movie Office Space).

I'm not sure if a flip phone can get on the internet, but you can check with the phone company to find out. If it won't, most libraries have computers with free internet access, so you can try your local library to keep in touch with us. Either way, we'll be here waiting for you when you get back. :)

About the admin, you have to remember that humor and sarcasm don't always come across properly in writing, so you have to make it clear when you're joking, and if necessary, you may even have to apologize if someone took something the wrong way. You'd be surprised how much a sincere apology would mean to someone who just misunderstood something.

"You took me too seriously" is an odd thing to say after making serious accusations, telling me you're effectively trying to save civilization, and then sprinkling a little sarcasm on top.

Sorry, I think I have/had exactly the right read on what you were trying to do. Take serious jabs and use a (very thin) veneer of humor for deniability.

@Captain Steel (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=87640) I've been watching Happy Days TV series almost every night. I'm up to season 8 which I had never seen before. It's really weird because Ritchie and Ralph left the show and they have new cast members including Marion's nephew who's a gym teacher and Fonzie now teaches auto shop at high school. Oh and Jennie Piccaloo, who use to be talked about but never shown is also a regular cast member. Oh...Bag who was only in the first couple seasons, is nowhere to be seen.

It can, but, depending on the phone, it could take forever.

I've never argued with a single person on this site.

Oh, the days of hot pants & white knee-high boots. :) It's a pretty snazzy looking outfit:p I don't know what year that is from? My guess is 1970-1971 based on the fashions.

Testing... testing... from new location with "snazzy" new (or at least new to me) modem.

A decade ago, I said I could never move again... I wasn't far off. I totally failed at getting ready and packing. but the actual movers were much better this time - 3 guys, and took under 4 hours, but I guess stacking stuff in a storage unit is probably easier than taking it to different rooms in a house.

I had to go back to my rental house after the move: that night and the next day to finish packing up small stuff - but I was officially out before the end of this short month!

I'm still reeling from going from 10 years in my own house (after accumulating 30 years of stuff living on my own) down to ONE ROOM! The bizarre thing I realized my first night is I was sleeping in my first bedroom. It's my late father's room, but when I came home from the hospital my crib was in that room because it was my parents' bedroom and the only other bedroom in the house was occupied by my brothers (and my grandfather was there then sleeping either in the attic or on the first floor - not sure where he stayed when I was first born).

It sounds like your move went okay.

I think I actually understand how hard it must have been for you to pack up and move. It's tough moving after years of collecting stuff. We have a house full of collectibles, and I'm planning to live here forever, just because I can't even think about attempting to pack up all this stuff.

It must feel weird being back in your old room, but hopefully you'll get used to it quickly. I guess the old saying isn't true. You can go home again. :)

Welcome back Captain!

Do you have a new internet provider? I think you said you would. If so did they give you a new email? And did you cancel your old internet service? If so your old email might work, but only for a day or two. Then again your old email might keep working. My old MSN email still works even though I haven't used their service since the dial up days. Remember them?

Hope all goes well for ya, catch ya later.

I didnt realise you were downsizing to one room. That's a pretty massive effort. Good job.

Just as long as you’re not sleeping in your crib ....

Hi Cap, How did you go with your move? You've been very quiet since.

I hope you managed ok - did you have help from friends or did you have to do it all on your own?
A very good school friend of mine had a huge move a weekend or two ago so I thought of you and your dilemma. She had lived there for 12 years and being a special FX artist in the Aus film industry had an entire studio in her back yard she had to pack up. Yikes. I really feel for you guys making such massive transitions. 10, 12 years is a long time to have a territory of your own and then have to move into a smaller space. She bought a block of land outside sydney and will be living in a container. Looks great. Already has a massive deck, stairs, about to hook up electricity and water. She cant afford to live in sydney anymore so did what she can afford. In the mean time, like you, she is living in one room, but with her son.She was really sad to leave her environment so I thought of you and sending all the best thoughts it is not too difficult a shuffle but for me it would be HUGE. Genuine best thoughts for you.

I meant to ask, did you have to put much in storage? If so I hope that went ok.
