"Gidday" ... I'm a Kiwi, a New Zealander, to get here, fly towards Australia, and when you see that, turn left towards Antarctica... if you see snow and ice EVERYWHERE, then do a U-turn, you went too far.
If you see a couple of Island with soft sunny beaches and, in the distance, snow capped mountains, then welcome to New Zealand, or as we call it, Gods Zone!
To be honest, I was born in 1960 in the Netherlands but when I was half a year old, my family came out here to live.
So, anyhow, recently I was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, I'm taking a gene pill to extend my life, and it seems to be working. These days, I'm getting all nostalgic for the music I like (1930's Big Band Swing through to the 50's rock and roll, and through to the end of the 1960's... after that, meh.... I don't call that music!)
But also, TV shows and movies. I was telling my wife about one movie but for the life of me, couldn't find it, not even sure of the name. Hoping this site can help.
I'll help out where and when I can.
Welcome to Movie Forums. :)
Hey bro. I'm your neighbour. Sydney to be exact. Thankgod I have someone on the right side of the date line to chat to! There's a movie questions subforum so whack you and your wife's query in there. Welcome.
I'm really sorry about your recent diagnosis, matey. All the best with the treatment. Seems very exciting and hopeful. Hugs to you.
Right-oh.
Hi!!!! Welcome! All that jazz!!! And speaking of, big band is great! Though I'd have to argue the post-60s music opinion ;)

I'm opinionated, but my opinion is based on factual evidence. :) However, some of the music after the 60's is OK, I like Rod Stewart for example, Mull of kintyre, Sailing, and a lot of movie themes...
It might be faster to say that music should move you, as a movie should, right, to me, music must make the blood boil... like the Chris Reeves original "Superman" theme played at full volume, as one example, or music to make you cry and emotional, like Amazing Grace and Elvis singing "Peace in the Valley".... both those songs have such an impact on me that I want them played at my funeral. :)
But after the sixties... I'm fussy.... VERY fussy. :)

We ANZAC's need to stick together, however, you have TRIED to steal all out national icons, like Phar Lap, Sir Ed Hillary, Goodbye Pork Pie (the 70's movie, not the remake).... so I have to warn you, try any of that around me and I'll have to bite your head off. :)

"Gidday" ... I'm a Kiwi, a New Zealander,
Welcome. New Zealand was on TV here in the UK earlier today, looking at the Kakapo – what a great bird :).
I've been lucky twice with my film questions so I'm sure somebody here will know what it is you're thinking of.

I hope so. As for the cheeky birds, have you seen the video of them moving road cones and diverting traffic to places they don't want to go? :)
We never park a car where they can get onto it, if you did, they "peel" all the rubber from it.. and mirrors... they are so cute we cannot hurt them... as much as want to hurt them... of course. :)

Well, of course, that is why I wrote it.... :) :) :) RIGHT?
"Music soothes the savage breast".....
but to me, it really should move you, depending on your mood and the mood the music wants to infuse you with. For example, on the 7th December, 1941, when war was declared (for the USA at any rate) The Marines just had to play their "Marines Hymn" and many young men would be inspired to join up. That is the whole point of "Patriotic" music, right?
I could therefore argue that music is also propaganda, or at least, the Patriotic music is. Its there to inspire, to fire people up, to get them to stand, to feel proud.... and there is no other National anthem better at doing that than the Anthem of the USA.... "Oh can you see, by the dawns early light...." ..... what does the UK have? God Save the Queen.... yeah, right, that inspires me to vomit... (no offence) ... ours is worse.... "God defend New Zealand"... because sure as hell, no one else will.... and the Aussies.... "Advance Australia Fair".... yeah right, a real macho song to go to war with, that one.... :)
But you see my point... music makes you feel emotions, whatever the author of the music wants you to feel... its why depressed people play sad songs, and happy people play happy songs (or music). :)
DO'H..... OK.... I get it, sorry, I'm slow today.... errr, yeah, I made a Superman reference and you are..... yes.... now I feel foolish. :)
Welcome. Your movie is The Long Gray Line with Tyrone Power and Maureen O'Hara, directed by John Ford.

I don't find God Save the Queen at all inspiring, especially prior to a football match :).
I prefer Jerusalem, which I think has been used for England in the rugby in the past, because it's more about the country and the sense of place. Land of Hope and Glory also to a lesser extent.
The one that really gets to me is the Icelandic national anthem, I think mainly because of the overwhelming feeling of history and nationality it conjures up. The Wales anthem is like that too. I also like the ones for the Netherlands, Croatia and Portugal.

Hey Hey Hey dont forget the almighty pavlova. I am very respectful about Kiwi icons I will have you know my good man, and Australians think Sir Edmund Hillary is Australian? When did that happen? It's general knowledge here he was a Kiwi. You might be mixing him up with another famous Kiwi - Russell Crowe. He will never be a politician here, and that is a shame. He'd probably do a better job than the clowns in Canberra.
ps I dont know what Goodbye Pork Pie is. Should I?

Thank you, you made me very happy... I saw a bit of it on YOUtube just now and can confirm this is the movie. YOU are what makes THIS site one of the BEST on the internet.

Yeah, sorry, I've always been a comedian, but more so now since the cancer appeared. I always have the doctors and nurses at the oncology ward in stitches, nothing is safe... in fact, I even started a blog yesterday (link will be posted soon) to help me spread my opinions to the world, and most of all, to make people smile...
If I ever go too far, just tell me to pipe down. :)

The version on YouTube wasn't that good, I have ordered a copy from another site that sells old videos. BUT, I couldn't help myself...
I had to watch the part where O'Hara's character died... I do not mind admitting, I did cry... just like the first time I saw it... and then, the ending... it ended far too soon (on youtube) but that bought a tear to my eye as well.
I could be angry with you, not for making me cry, but getting me to admit it. However, I'm too old to care if anyone laughs at a grown man admitting he cries... so, thanks again. You are worth your weight in gold. :)

What's the 1970's version, Kiwi? I can only find the 1981 movie and the remake. I hadnt heard of any of them until now. I do, however, know your version of Aussie killer animals. Get the flock out of here!
