Their sound changes rather frequently. I've long said that Psycho Killer is by far the most catchy song I have ever heard. However, their best stuff is slightly less accessible. Naive Melody, Once in a Lifetime, Heaven, Life During Wartime are all pretty good examples of their more obscure stuff, but I feel they do remain fun to listen to on all albums.

Well since you asked ;)

Christina AgMalaria - Stripped.

Nooooooooooooo. Aggggghhhhhhhhhhh!

NIN - And all that could have been

A live album, yeah ok, but come on? Pretty Hate Machine? The Downward Spiral? The Fragile? All great albums.

Linkin Park - Meteora

Headaches, Headaches.... I'd rather listen to Christina AgMalaria.

INXS - The Years 1979 - 1997
Lenny Kravitz - Greatest Hits

ok :indifferent:

I hate greatest hits albums, I like to listen to music as was intended and not compiled later on. Don't get me wrong, I think it's ok to sample a few tunes to see if you like the band but to say you like a band based just on their greatest hits baffles me. Agghhhh, well at least it worked for Queen. I only know three or four songs by INXS so maybe it was good for them, oh well. I'm not really bothered about these artists anyway.

Eminem - The Eminem Show

I have never been into Eminem, oh only that one one time when he sampled Dido's 'Thankyou' which was half good for 'Stan'.

Silverchair - Freak Show

:indifferent:

If you were to bring those albums then I couldn't. :(

(bring something better and I'll reconsider ;) )

if you have one of the versions of that album with bonus tracks it should have a decent [actually it's been too long since i've heard this album] cover of the awesome wiseblood song, 0-0 where evil dwells.

Does it not seem kind of silly to reuse one artist over and over on a list so small as 10?

Additionally, Deloused is probably the most disappointing LP to be released in recent years. I'm hoping they stop sucking by next LP.

And furthermore, you really like trip hop.

Okay. One, I don't like it when people are like, well that's YOUR opinion. Yes, yes it is my opinion. Did I ever say it wasn't? No. Defend your opinion. I only pointed that out so I could spark debate about the album. But I won't do that anymore. Because I'm a badass, and it seems that every person who likes that album says the same thing. Tremulant was an excellent EP, by the way. I'm not anti Mars Volta, I just think Deloused is halfassed unmelodic piece of ****.

And it is undeniably silly to mention one artist so many times, for multiple reasons. If I wanted to, I could name a top 10 list with just Bob Dylan and Radiohead albums, but I don't because it's pointless to reuse artists over and over, since there's so much great music out there. By reserving 4 spots of your list for just one band, you're successfully limiting recognition of a lot of other music you like probably an equal amount.

Also, relax. This is the internet. If you're going to get all jumpy every time anything is said to you, you might want to try heading over to Oregon or something. I'm still not convinced it exists outside of that old game, but if it does, I'd be forced to assume it's pretty nice there. And, they'd have oxen and stuff.

I'm still not convinced that Mars Volta can hold together an EP. Of the two branching bands from At the Drive In, I expected Sparta to be more of an EP leaning band, but it seemed to work opposite my expectations. Tremulant was short enough that I may never have realized that it was also unmelodic. But with Deloused, I can't even count how many times I wanted to skip songs because they devolved into such silliness towards the middle.

lol yeah at times its kinda like santana hijacks the song outta nowhere, still appreciate their music though. btw saw sparta in concert awhile back, best show ive been to in a very very long time. there was one song in particular that they played that neither myself nor any of my freinds have been able to track down, anyways I digress.

The opening song, "Caught Somewhere In Time", is probably my favourite Maiden song.

I'm going to pick four, in no particular order, which are more or less just a random sampling of my top 20, which I don't think I could ever whittle down properly.

Jagged Little Pill
Alanis Morissette, 1995
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002MY3.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Why: Pain can produce exquisite art, and Morissette's visceral jadedness is palpable, despite the fact that she was just 21 when it was released. If memory serves, this was the first album I ever bought with my own money. Six of the album's 12 tracks (not counting the album's one remix of sorts) went on to become successful singles.

Best track: Track 6, Forgiven. Not only the best song on the album, but probably the most overlooked. Received no radio airplay, as far as I can recall, and is virtually never mentioned among her best. Would've been a standout track on a less spectacularly dense album.

Joshua Tree
U2, 1987
http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000001FS3.03.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Why: Though the album is a bit front-loaded, every single one of the first four songs is downright fantastic. And no album has ever had an opening comparable to the 3-song punch of Where The Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, and With Or Without You. They were using sentence-long song titles when My Chemical Romance was still in black diapers. Opens like someone's greatest hits album.

Best track: It is and always will be I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, arguably among the Top Ten songs of all-time.

Kill The Moonlight
Spoon, 2002

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000069DOH.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Why: The most well-rounded of Spoon's 5 full-length studio albums (they have a great many singles and EPs to their name, however), Kill The Moonlight is what Indie Rock sounds like when it's not actively trying to be different. Virtually every track has a distinct, constantly noticable beat, and the album is littered with little piano riffs that lend the tracks some additional elegance. This is little more than the Spoon representative for me, however; I could have just as easily chosen 2005's Gimme Fiction.

Best track: Impossible to choose. There are no stand-outs on an album that won't let you sit still. Put a gun to my head and I might choose track 4, Stay Don't Go. Ask the next day and it might be the upbeat The Way We Get By, or the largely instrumental Paper Tiger.

Conductor
The Comas, 2004

http://www.thecomas.com/images/conductor_md.jpg

Why: I know, I know; it's awfully recent to be on a list like this. But Conductor is unique in an industry increasingly devoid of originality.

Written largely by lead singer Andy Herod in an abandoned house on the beach in North Carolina, the album was inspired by his breakup with actress Michelle Williams (the one on Heath Ledger's arm at the Oscars) and repeated viewings of Dark City. Throw in a few choice substances, and you've got what can only be describe as sci-fi pop music. This album dabbles in many sounds, but somehow gives them all the same tint. From the Arabian-ish strings that open the album on The Science Of Your Mind to Moonrainbow, which could pass for a Mamas and the Papas B-Side, there really isn't anything like it.

Best track: Track 3, Tonight On The WB, is the most mainstream song on the album, and might be the best. Ultimately, though, the slower, haunting Dirty South is the one that stays with you, if you give it enough time to seep in.

space
Other albums that deserve one of these spots, but are somewhat less interesting to talk about_: NIN's Pretty Hate Machine (Rezner hasn't topped it since), Michael Jackson's Thriller, Pink Floyd's The Wall, and many others.

Definitely some similarities there; which is obviously very high praise.

It really is a remarkable album if you have the patience for it. The Comas have since signed with Vagrant and word is they'll have another album out in just a couple months. Conductor is, I believe, their third full-length studio album, and while their first two are nothing to sneeze at, it has more solid tracks than both of them combined. It's really a breakthrough effort in every sense of the word. I can't recommend it enough.

By the way: the album itself, if bought physically (rather than through iTunes or something) comes with a second disc containing a giant music video that plays over the entire album. It includes an extra track ("Bad Connexion") and looks like a bleak, dialogue-less episode of Aeon Flux at times. It's pretty bizarre, but its production values are also surprisingly good given that the band hasn't exactly broken into the mainstream yet.

New Order - Technique

Van Morrison - St Dominic's Preview

The Pogues - If I should Fall From Grace With God

The Fatima Mansions - Valhalla Avenue

Sugar - Copper Blue

Neil Young - Rust Never Sleeps

The Fall - Code: Selfish

Have you got the version in the picture (the one with Garvey's Ghost)? I can remember bartering for it in exchange for 3 or 4 CDs of complete tat (including a Chapterhouse album :D) in a record shop in Belfast on the day that the alcoholic store owner sold me a limited edition copy of Lou Reed & John Cale's Songs For Drella for the same price as the regular release. give us a top ten swedish albums!

Hmm, one should think that of the members of this forum, I'm your man for that job - but I'm not even sure that I own ten great swedish albums. Not that there isn't any good swedish music out there, only during the time when I really bought a lot of new music, the swedish bands didn't interest me at all. Now I'm old and unhip.

Yeah, I do own the version with both the original album and "Garvey's Ghost". I was referring to "Marcus Garvey" though, even if the dub version is excellent too.

Actually, no I haven't heard the entire album except for bits here and there. I would probably like it though since he was great around that time. I think it was around that time that I heard him for the first time, doing a new live version of "Hey, hey, my, my", probably from that very album.

I can't stand The Sounds probably because their lyrics are rubbish. But they've made a few catchy tunes.

I thought of one band that I myself haven't heard enough of, but everytime I hear a song by them I always say that I've got to get everything they've ever done. Which is like two albums. Anyway, The Radio Dept. Fantastic...

oooooooohhhh... of course!

Logh! Check them out! Fantastic band...

Hmm... Well, The Hellacopters' first album, "Super****ty to the Max" is a swedish garage punk rock classic I guess. At least the fantastic opening track "Gotta Get Some Action Now".

Oh yeah... Bob Hund... Great band who sings in Swedish. They've made covers of Pere Ubu and The Stooges tracks. In Swedish. Apparently the guitarist in Blur loves them.

Then there's this young girl who writes, plays, records and produces everything herself: Laleh. She sings in English, Swedish and Farsi(?) too I think. Really talented girl...

And then there's Tough Alliance of course. Punks with Oasis-like attitude playing music that sounds like a mix between Pet Shop Boys and, well, Oasis. Check out their EP:s and their first album, The New School.

Aw, surely you've heard of The Fall at least, they've been skulking around for at least 25 years! Or something ridiculous like that.

As for the others, Avey Tare and Panda Bear are members of Animal Collective which you may have heard of, Spirit They've Gone was a side-project of theirs. That goes for Out Hud too, who are pretty much the same band as !!! (who again you may have possibly heard of, they were part of a group of bands who allegedly started the entire post-punk revival) but more electronica-ish.

Uhhm, Clinic you've probably heard before. Their stuff has been used for a few commercials and television shows.

That's not true. I've been known to listen to Pavement from time to time, and I practically worship Belle & Sebastian. The same goes for Elliott Smith who was on an indie label for three albums (and a posthumous release). Sure I like plenty of other indie bands/musicians but those are the big three.

The Scout.

Gotcha :)

Scout Niblett is a songstress hailing from England. I've heard her described as being similar to Cat Power but with Bjork-like weirdness. Which is possibly stretching it a bit. She is at least definitely as folkishly blues inspired as Cat Power but much more brash and experimental, and not quite as occupied with being melodic.

Which I find to be tricky with her; her second album, I thought, was near impossible to listen to for half of the tracks. It's all very stripped down and is mostly her belting out in front of a drumset, and too idiosyncratic and quirky, with lyrics like:

"I am an emergency vehicle
the magic I am presence
floods right through me
flooding my blood
bam bam here I am
bam bam here I am
thriving right in front of my eyes
thriving in front of my eyes
I am an emergency vehicle"

Some of it is absolutely loverly though, so check it out.

But yeah, Kidnapped By Neptune is all around very nice. It still has that bare feel to it, but rounds itself out with a lot of interesting chord and tempo changes mid-song and mixes electric with acoustic stuff quite a bit, the entire composition just seems so much smarter. It's still quirky and nice but much more polished.

Whenever I've heard The Fall, they sounded like Richard Hell and the Voidoids without the energy and structure, or Pavement without the sense of melody. Pavement was never about original ideas anyway really. it was about surrealist whimsy (lyrically) and the excitement of bringing minimalism back to rock music. In something that has been as heavily explored as music has, how likely is it that someone will innovate greatly and remain sonically pleasing. Malkmus has charm...and that goes a long way.

Yeah, that's probably her. She's playing the drums herself no? I remember hearing her and thinking that the drummer had probably never even heard of drums before the day of the recording. But it certainly had its charm.

Hmm.. Don't know if I would call Pavement minimalists. I've always thought Pavement were more about creating music based on the beauty in askew sounds. I think they are just bad to average musicians with some talent andd with pretty high ambitions, which is proven by the fact that their albums became more and more sophisticated along with their musicals skills improving.

And "Range Life" is still one of my favourite songs. :)

Interesting perspective you have on that. I guess when I use the word minimalism, I attribute it to the fact that Pavement seemed to have such an obvious lack of technical skill, but conciously disregarded that and went ahead making music. I guess if Pavement had worked with a highly skilled producer who added more polish to their sound, they would have sounded more like pop-rock than stylized, off-center indie. I guess it's like the situation of Ringo Starr who is also sometimes referred to as a minimalist. He had very little skill at first and probably would have played better if he could (as evidenced by his later work in songs like "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "A Day in the Life"). And coinciding with your point Pidd...in the liner notes of the new edition of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain Malkmus discusses the creation of each song with a complete lack of irony. Even to the extent of calling "Newark Wilder" a cabaret song. And of course there's an alt-country song ("Range Life"). They were so eager to experiment and expand their range to different genres that they couldn't even wait until they actually had the ability to do it. :) It reminds me of a quote of Johnny Ramone's, stating that when the Ramones formed, they considered themselves a bubblegum band. Anyway with the aforementioned songs and a Dave Brubeck tribute ("5-4 = Unity") it's clear that Pavement aren't really the slackers they appear to be on first listen. Anyway, this is really just a lengthy roundabout way of saying...you're right.

Buying music sucks. I made a promise to myself never to waste another penny on buying a music CD after I purchased "Hybrid Theory" by Linkin Park.

Was the CD that bad or was that the CD that happened to be the last one.

There's no such thing as a top 10 best anything of all time.
why do you consider these the 10 best? therefore this should be the point of the thread

Well the idea is that each person has their own idea of what they think the best 10 albums of all time are. Its every person's opinion, just like your top 10 favorite movies on your profile.

I think I’ll do something different within the general relevance of the thread but with a little more depth; a top 10 list of albums that shaped me as a writer and musician, as well as being records I feel are relevant in the progression of music. Order is extraneous. The interesting thing about this list is I don’t even rate most of these as 5/5, nor are they necessarily my favorite release by the bands.

Bat For Lashes – Two Suns
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/6/61/Bat_for_lashes_two_suns.jpg/200px-Bat_for_lashes_two_suns.jpg

It’s amazing how a simple alteration of instrumentation for every song can make an album sound fresh after 100 listens. This album seems to have been written by the duality of one person, and the musical dynamics hint at this, let alone the (very original) lyrics. The people that ignored this album as well as a bunch of the people that praise this album still haven’t really accessed the spiritual honesty and musical integrity such a young artist was able to produce. Utterly enchanting.

David Sylvian – Secrets Of The Beehive
http://www.music-lyrics-chord.com/cover/David_Sylvian_Secrets_of_the_Beehive.jpg

A true poet, David Sylvian is never a stagnant artist, but always enigmatic. This is the album that taught me about textures, as well as finding a happy medium between pretentiousness and stinging brilliance in lyrics. Mixing upbeat jazz into a string-based dirge of a record still doesn’t make sense unless you hear it, let alone the softest brass section I’ve ever heard on tape.

Antonio Vivaldi – Four Seasons
http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/t_200/emi3944312.jpg

Motifs, motifs, motifs. While the Four Seasons can be seen as a generic choice, there has never been a concept record before or after this dealing with an intangible theme that pulls it off at all. How Vivaldi managed to do so is beyond me but while introducing me to that in of itself, the concept of motifs and the way he managed to recreate them later on in the piece was stunning.

The Cure – The Head On The Door
http://static.ulike.net/img/01_The_Head_on_the_Door.jpg

I do find it strange that I picked this over Disintegration. However, The Cure seemed to do a best of both worlds with this album, mixing upbeat material with some serious downers, and the dynamic between them makes both emotions stand out all the more. While it’s something so simple, I found it to be one of the most important things I ever learned.

Clint Mansell – The Fountain OST
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_k0A6Op01SGk/ShrEGIb513I/AAAAAAAAAbc/hlCVo01RwuI/s320/mansellFountain.jpg

Besides Clint Mansell and Zbigniew Preisner, I rarely another composer in film match music with the visual, but I have to pass this credit to Mansell for I only recently discovered Preisner. The Fountain’s score, even if you’re gay and didn’t like the film, was undeniably powerful. Plus, the subtle addition of the post-rock band Mogwai made it stand even farther apart from other scores.

Koji Kondo – Ocarina Of Time OST
http://www.rpgfan.com/soundtracks/zeldaootost/cover.jpg

This Zelda game got me into music, period. The music in this game changed the medium from that point on, and it just so happened to be really good music as well. It was very interesting as a little tyke to hear all sorts of different styles within one game that all made sense in the context of the story, so I consider that a strong characteristic.

Diabolical Masquerade – Death’s Design
http://www.progarchives.com/progressive_rock_discography_covers/2381/cover_313193112006.jpg

A metal-based score for a horror film that was never made. Again, the motifs are well-implemented, use of samples and sound effects is balanced, and the range of styles is just bizarre (very unique solos, tribal drums, jazz breaks, Egyptian scales, etc), but also covers a lot of ground as far as the history and use of horror scores. Ugh, and the leads Nystrom comes up with are scary infectious. One of my favorite albums ever made by far.

Moonspell – The Antidote
http://image.kazaa.com/images/68/727701819068/Moonspell/The_Antidote/Moonspell-The_Antidote_2.jpg

This commendable band from Portugal is strangely consistent. They tend to change style and mood with each album but retain their thread of consciousness in a way only a truly honest band can, whether they do very light gothic rock or a supremely heavy and dark metal track. With The Antidote, they were basically in-between rock and metal, but did something distinctive. The album was written as prose by the author José Luís Peixoto, the lyrics, music, and novel having all the same concept. It’s possibly one of the earliest forms of a bi-medium product, at least to my knowledge.

Ulver – Svidd Neger OST
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BJs8mlnXmKQ/R0hsyhqwNDI/AAAAAAAAGnw/_KClXMZPFcg/s320/Ulver%2B-%2BSvidd%2BNeger.jpg

Electronic classical music. What does that even mean? Ulver is easily the most eclectic band to ever exist (not even trying to exaggerate) and took yet another step in a different direction with their second OST, but this time utilizing classical instrumentation rather than purely electronic as they did with Lyckantropen Themes. Very beautiful work, and the combination of the electronic style with the score is strangely fluid, and actually helps to accentuate the bow work somehow.

Katatonia – Brave Murder Day
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ru/thumb/a/a1/Rel_bravemurderday.jpg/200px-Rel_bravemurderday.jpg

Another band that doesn't repeat themselves. The concept of drone, repetition, and decay within music is a very hard task to execute. The importance of those elements is the implementation of them must be subtle enough to completely envelope the listener, almost as a form of control, and in this sense, combined with poetically dead lyrics, it’s one of the most depressing albums I’ve ever heard. Depression is underrated.

I don't really know how I feel about these kinds of things, I absolutely hate doing lists because I know that I am going to neglect something significantly prominent and find my own boot striking my ass for it later, but here it goes.

4. Vulnerable (The Used)

Been a while since I've done this (at least in this thread), here's a mix of more-or-less permanent fixtures and current obsessions:

This list isn't gonna be very accurate, because I tend not to listen to full albums, and when I do, it's usually because it's the band's newest album, and not because it's the most consistent.
I'm only including one album from each band, in no particular order:

21st Century Breakdown - Green Day
Siamese Dream - Smashing Pumpkins
Revolver - The Beatles
Audioslave - Audioslave
In Your Honor - Foo Fighters
Get Born - Jet
A Night at the Opera - Queen
The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Purple - Stone Temple Pilots
Tommy - The Who

I could add dozens of other albums I love as well but these are among those that I listen the most often. I posted the covers because I love the artwork done in heavy metal albums.

Country of origin of these albums:

Germany: 4
UK: 4
USA: 2

Genres: Heavy Metal, Power Metal, Speed Metal, Thrash Metal and Proto-Death Metal (Pleasure to Kill)

To get to non-metal albums I would have to expand my favorites to a top 100 albums, there some Led Zeppelin, Yes, Beatles and Deep Purple would sneak in.

Interestingly, no Portuguese language albums are among my favorites. Also, notice the lack of Black Metal and Death Metal albums. That's because I liked some death metal and black metal but I don't love it as much as I love the classic bands such as Iron Maiden. While the extreme aggressiveness they attain is interesting overall nobody in these genres that I know has reached the level of artistic genius of bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Helloween and Metallica. I know, I am a man of conservative taste.

All these albums combine a certain sense of greatness and originality with thick instrumental-driven melodies and a certain dose of raw aggressiveness (what fundamentally differentiates heavy metal from classical music). Compositions tend to be complex in most of these albums (exceptions being Russian Roulette and Ride the Lightning).
