Watched the pilot of HBO's new show The Deuce. Though I lived in midtown Manhattan for a decade & worked in Times Square for several months, I had never heard of 42nd street being called The Deuce. But, what do I know.

I badly want HBO to have a new hit, but not sure this is going to be it. First, if you are not a fan of James Franco, you will not like this show. He dominated the pilot & actually plays twins so there's a lot of him. Which is ok with me.

There were a ton of characters in the pilot. A lot of folks from The Wire & more to come.

Love Maggie Gyllenhaal, but she has to stop going topless now. She's still very pretty, but her boobs now - not so much.

Some of the characters I believed in - some I didn't, which is always the kiss of death for me.

Will watch another episode or two & see how the show develops.

I mean, it's David Simon, so yeah, I'm gonna try it.

As someone else mentioned, the pilot is almost like a POV experience from one the girls. You're lured in, through humor, charm, the very personality of the city and its characters, the time period. You let your guard down, start relating, even liking the pimps, prostitutes, gangsters and cheaters.

The ending is the rude awakening. These are not reasonable people. These are sharks. Each one of them only looking as far as the next meal.

It's brilliant writing, great acting and singular direction.

I'm in.

Never gonna like a pimp. Especially the slimy creep played by Gary Carr.

Hard for me not like someone with the line "Nixon's pimpin'" but that's just me.

I've seen the first two episodes and enjoy the sets and clothes immensely. I always think about how many cars they actually have.

I'm already over the nudity and sex. Maybe it's not suppose to be appealling, but I can do without.
And as much as I enjoy cigarette smoking in film, it has to be believable. The fact that everyone smokes and few get it right gmg.

Interested to see it moving forward.

You can always tell when an actor has never smoked. They take too many puffs on the cigarette in too short a time.

Got through most of episode 2. Don’t like the show. I don’t believe in any of the characters. I am done.

For those who watched Episode 3, what was the deal with all the guys at the end applauding Maggie Gyllenhaal? Was it because she caused that guy to have a heart attack while she, um, pleasured him? Just wondering.

Ugh, hated that show. Waste of Wade Goggins’s talent.

The principal is routinely the worst part of VPs. Love Goggins, but not as a GAP caricature.

I still need to watch the last 2 eps of the Deuce.
