Last tuesday brought us the 7th season of one of my favorite shows (for better, or worse) American Horror Story. This season's theme is Cult.
How did fellow AHS fans/hate watchers feel about the first episode 'Election Night'?
Hopefully this will be an ongoing thread to discuss primarily this season. So any thoughts about AHS: Cult or the show in general, discuss it!
Working on a review currently for the first episode, but so far I'm pleased, especially to be back in classic AHS mode over last seasons faux-doc Roanoke.
There's already a thread. I loved it.

Oh I'll look it up! thanks. (i did too)
Lots of whining about it by hate watchers which happens every year. I LOVE the little asides about issues like anti vaxxers, 4chan etc. And the meltdown about Trump winning was hysterically funny and well done. Evan banging Trump's head was pure perfection. So was his Cheetos tan. I wonder if Trump's kid watched it.

Can I watch this without watching the other seasons?

Yes. It's an anthology.

I hope you enjoy, Sam. I found the dark humour in the first episode the other night incredibly funny. Just keep in mind AHS= homage to american horror movies. It;s not scary. Disturbing themes, though. I think the showrunner is a bit odd.
Not hugely happy with the cast this season. My favourites arent included.

Might be a while before I get to it. I'll keep recording them then just blast through them. If I had time I would start from season 1 but too much to watch and too little time. I'll keep you posted anyway.
If you do go back to any of the others after this SL, i recommend Asylum. Only watched the first four but i think it was easily the best out of them. Coven kind of killed this show for me, i slogged through Freak Show without paying much attention to it after that then haven't watched since. Would probably still like the first two i think.

I've loved all of them and enjoyed multiple rewatches as they aired but recently went back to check out murder house and felt it no longer packed the punch it initially had. Still, as a first time viewer I hope you have the same entertainment I did back then. Very unsettling taboo topics. I dont think I've ever seen a sex addict crybait on screen before.
Not usre what themes the current season intends to showcase. Hive mentality and neurosis so far.
I've heard it's meant to represent heresy.
There was a theory going around recently which said the show represents Dante's circles of hell. Which means there will be 9 seasons, with each representing a different circle etc. The same actors being used is meant to represent the same souls being tortured again and again as they go deeper into hell. It was really good as far as theories go! Because there are some awful tv theories knocking about

LOL I loved all the freaking out about it covering the election campaign, and people still refusing to watch it because of trump and hilary. How long did that last for? Stretching it to say maybe 5 minutes.
I mean I'm a Stein supporter and although I haven't watched it yet, she apparently got bashed a bit too :( although things like that don't bother me, not everyone is going to agree with my political views, that's a part of life... so I don't get why Hillary and Trump supporters were so outraged.
Oh they weren't outraged by trump and Hillary. They theorised Murphy was going to bash the fans with his view.

Is Asylum season 3?
Is Asylum season 3?
Two mate. Coven is Season 3.
Good to see Evan being given more to do than looking like an imbecile and crying a lot. He does scary very well.
edit toi add: the kid is surprisingly good, thank god.

Have you seen it yet, Ci? It;s constant in your face social commentary that's topical but I like how they're just very quick short oneliners, like deep web, social media, bigotry, apiary trend at the moment, so your ear keeps getting pulled. Loving how they've portrayed the lesbian marriage and parenting but I fear this wont end well. Those two together are very sensitive and the chemistry is great.
As for your comment re: circles of hell, interestingly there was a circle painted on the door of the murder house last night.
I haven't :( I think I want to watch a season or two before I get onto this one. I think I'll try and get through Asylum since I've heard it's one of the best seasons, and Coven because I like watching things about witches :p

Asylum is the only one I cant rewatch. I found it very unsettling (but still very good) and one of my nieces started with that and totally freaked out in the first episode so never watched the show again.. Coven is stunning but a lot of people found it too teen centric. I was too focused on the older actors to really even notice the kids so much. Hotel I think you'll really like. Denis O'Hare is just amazing.

I couldn't get into Asylum. Ditto with Freak Show.

I loved Freak Show. Probably the only one that scared me - great chase scenes from ground level in the final two episodes. Really beautifully shot, too. Those sets were great.
I need to try this show again. I watched half of season 1 and thought it was pretty awful... and I've heard that's like, the best season, so...

I think it was regarded as the best season when it first aired, if you get my drift, and then the incessant whiners each season would refer back to it as the best so it got that reputation. It was just very edgy at the time with Murphy constantly pushing the envelope on taboo topics. Each season has been divisive since (also very rapey), so there's something for everyone. I would suggest if you want to get back into it just watch the pilot of each season then decide which one grabs your attention. Season 6 was very different and in 3 parts. This season is just really topical, and as usual the cinematography is beautiful.
Trying each first ep is a good idea. I might try that.

If you dont watch the entire seasons in order you will miss a few tie ins, but seriously, I found them totally insignificant. I probably even missed them until someone p[ointed them out.
I had a rewatch with headphones and the sound cranked up. Lots of constant but faint background noise which keeps your teeth gritted.
The hysterical atmosphere is done so well in this but dayum, I feel like I need a break from it, and not just with Evan Peters. His psychotic character is the only calm one in it (apart from the kid)
I'm relaxing into the humour now. I would live anywhere with you as long as we had a decent cable package. LOL. Being hysterically happy to vote, or the guy who saws his hand off to exercise his right to vote. Holy hell people here are threatened with a 250 buck fine if they dont turn up.
Chaz Bono must have taken acting lessons since Roanoke; He's pretty good. And Emma Roberts always makes me laugh because she plays such a good bitch. Adina Porter almost had me on the floor at one point.
Still not understanding why Evan has blue hair, and missing the stylised cinematography a bit, but that's just two tiny nitpicks.
Anyone else liking it/not liking it?
Bump in preparation for the next episode. How real did this scene look - episode 5

Statement from FX Networks Regarding Tomorrow Night’s Episode of American Horror Story: Cult
FX NETWORKS·TUESDAY, 10 OCTOBER 2017
"In light of the tragedy last week in Las Vegas, Ryan Murphy and the producers of American Horror Story: Cult have chosen to make substantial edits to the opening scene of tomorrow night’s episode (Tuesday, October 10, 10 PM ET/PT). This opening, which was filmed two months ago and which portrays an occurrence of gun violence that has sadly become all too common in our country, contains a sequence that some viewers might find traumatic. Only the edited version of the episode will air on the FX linear channel, while the unedited version of the episode will be available on the VOD platform of your cable, satellite or telco provider, as well as on the FX Networks non-linear platforms, FXNOW and FX+.”
Evan Peters was great as Warhol

Gratuitous bump to continue chatting to myself. Seems I'm the only one still going with this season. Was it the violence that put peopl off? I watched ep 3 of the current season last night . Wow someone sure upped the violence. Or was it Evan's wide eyed stare and shoutyness that put people off? He sure is shouting a lot., but I'm lovingit.
Oops. Looks like I might have watched the penultimate and didnt even realise how far through I was. I think I'm up to ep 3 of stranger things
