I did a basic search and other than a few things mentioned in the closed news thread I did not see anything. If there is an existing thread please just move this thread if needed. Thank you :).

So this past Friday my son and I went to get my daughter from southern Florida as she is/was expected to get a major hit from Irma in her town. She had prepared well enough, but a full tank of gas would not have allowed her to get here (Pensacola) and the fuel shortages were scary. she also has a 2 year old son and we did not want her on the road with millions of people by herself.

So my son and I got some gas cans and his Volt and we had enough gas and power for a round trip. It is normally a 7 to 8 hour trip down. We made great time getting there, the roads going south were pretty much clear. Unfortunately his vehicle overheated about 25 miles outside of Vero Beach and we tried everything we could to get it going but it looks like his water pump failed (or something worse).

We somehow managed to get a tow (we were told that we were very lucky we were on the southbound side because no way would we have had any luck going north.) it ook 3 hours for it to get there and my son got himself all bit up from fire ants that sneaked up on him as we were sitting on the side of the road.

Pretty much it was a miserable experience all around but we did get my daughter and grandson and just got home. The trip coming back was crazy and SLOOOOWWWW.

This is what our trip down felt like

It hasn't really gotten extreme where I am yet (probably later tomorrow), but I kind of regret not boarding up some of my windows. My house is surrounded by trees.

If pieces of the house decide to migrate, I have a rusty old conquistador helmet... so there's that.

I've also got about a half quarter tank of gas in my car. I just gave up midweek.

I joined George Noory last night in a mass mental meditation moment to try to slow the hurricane down (lowering it from a level 5 to a 4) and drive it out to sea.

That sounds like a terrible trip, but it's great that you got your daughter and grandson to a safe place, and you'll all be together throughout the storm. Stay safe.

Hopefully all the MoFos in Irma's path will check in throughout the storm if possible, and after the storm passes, to let us know that you're all okay.

Man what a nightmare. Dont understand these people who shrug and say its no big deal it'll be fine. What level of denial does it take to gamble with life and limb like that exactly? They were interviewing a man who lives on his boat in the keys the other night and he was saying he's just going to weather it out. He should be ok. Its a boat after all and boats float! I sure hope he has a first aid kit on that boat with his CHILDREN. And life insurance...

My step daughter lives in Bradenton and she got out of Dodge on Thursday even before they heard it was turning toward the west. Now it looks like the best call shes ever made...

As of 10am, All we're getting here in Tampa Bay is a little rain. We're just on the outer bands. But the Keys are getting hammered. They're just getting the eye, right now.

We'll get that at about 2AM ET tomorrow. I'll check in when I can, but we might be getting "rolling blackouts" courtesy of the Power company, and I intend to go to bed early tonight so I can be up around 2am when the eye hits, and monitoring things.

All in any affected area, Stay safe!

Well, they aren't going to force you out of your house. But what they will do is get names of "next of kin" and they advise you that they won't come to assist you if you should change your mind and want them to come rescue you. They won't do that when the winds go up to 45mph.

Irma needs to settle the hell down. Remind me again why Florida isn't so bad? They're lucky they have Disney World.

Speaking of luck...Irma's going to need it if she doesn't leave yo hood soon. If she gets too close make sure she sees the helmet. Might seem risky, but she'll know you mean business.

There is no escaping Mother Nature... no matter where you live in the USA, she will catch you. If it's not Hurricanes in the Southeast, it's Winter Snow Storms and Nor'easters in the Northeast and upper mid-west. Midwest and South Central is all "Tornado Alley." On the west coast you have Earthquakes, mud slides and wild fires. So there is really no place to escape. You just have to pick a spot and endure what comes.

I got tired of shoveling snow, so I moved to FL and haven't regretted it... not even in the last 48 hours. This will go away... but the sunshine that happens the rest of the time is priceless.

As of 6pm, the storm is weakening, being over the peninsula. It's now down to the upper end of a CAT 1. And it's moving directly north, so it might just squeak just to the right of Tampa Bay. The eye is due to arrive in Tampa at 2AM ET tomorrow. I'll be up and monitoring, so I'll get some sleep before then.

Here's the 5pm Cone report.

My mom is in the West Palm Beach area, and she lost power around 4:00 PM today. They were prepared for this, so they have plenty of food and water, their cell phones and battery-powered candles/lanterns. She's staying with friends, and they're staying inside where it's safe.

Morning all!

The night seemed to pass well in Tampa Bay. No power loss in my local area, so far. All that remains are the back end winds of the trailing outer bands.

Not much damage that I can see, so far, but I've not been able to do a full assessment yet. Right now, it just looks like I have some branches and leaves to rake up, as well as a trash bag full of empty beer cans.

Anyway, best wishes and thanks to all who sent their support. And our continued prayers for those who suffered much more. I have some folks I'm very worried about that had to ride it out in the keys.

Stay safe, folks.

Lasted a long time. The crescendo seemed to go on for 6 or 7 hours. Trees went down every which way, but all strategically missed expensive stuff. :) My poor neighbor now has a 20-30 foot tree stuck on his lawn though. There’s gonna be a hefty cleaning process, but it could’ve been worse. The winds are still howling a bit, feeling like fingernails on a chalkboard at this point.

Most of the yard trash goes to the side of the road for pick up. For the bigger stuff, I have to pay pros to take care of it. No gubmint for that I’m afraid.

I have family near Lakeland, FL. They survived with a minor roof leak. No power there though. Here in South East Alabama, and panhandle of Floriday it's been raining through the night and winds are strong but nothing at all like we expected. There are a few power outages scattered across the area, but I don't imagine they will last long.

Gee that's a bit rugged. During one bad storm here a big branch landed on power lines and knocked out electricity in the street with the lines cracking around like armageddon. Council came and cleared it all away and repaired the lines. My crazy neighbour tried to walk up our driveway to go off her head that my husband tried to kill her and her dog, with live wires flapping in her face. Mind blown.

ynwtf
09-11-17, 05:52 PM
Well, here if it's a utilities' issue such as a downed tree over a power line, they will usually clear that. But if it's just a tree that fell over in my back yard, plumbing back up (unless it's due to city lines breaking), flooding of my floors, or my trash can knocked over spreading debris through my yard, that's all on me.

Yeah, depending on your coverages of course. I just mean, that might not be government as lead. On me, or assisted by insurance should I have the proper coverages.

If my home owner's policy has flood insurance attached, then I'm out whatever my deductible is. Roof damage would be the same, short of the deductible. Depending on where you live, flood coverage may not be an option, or considerably higher than normal, due to location to coast or waterfront type properties. Every state has different laws and regulations for insurance though so it's hard to say. Just speaking from my experience.

If a tree goes down, and does no damage then I can go out with a chainsaw or hire someone out of pocket.

Flood zones here are exempt from claiming, but that doesnt include water frontages I dont think. Trees down are covered by council, although maybe only in the front yard overhanging council verge and powerlines because they have to keep those branches maintained. I need to check this because I have some massive trees in my backyard..

I live out in the county/farm land areas. Power utilities do come out once a year to trim back tree lines near above-ground power lines, to keep them safe. That's not at my expense directly, as I imagine it's factored into my monthly electric bill and invisible to me as a consumer. Cities have different regulations. Even more so, neighborhood organizations may have some community monthly dues to help with general maintenance and lawn care that might be more preemptive on all that.

Still though, I'm not sure I know anyone that has general tree service just by owning a home or property, with the noted exceptions of a tree hitting a line or landing in a road. Maybe some on the higher-end neighborhoods might include that in their association fees or something. I live next to cows though. We wouldn't know 'bout them thar folk. *spits while chawing down on my hay straw*

Sir Toose
09-19-17, 11:35 PM
Yes, last two days we had to get creative with stuff in the pantry :)

Thing is, we always seem to prep for the last storm but they're all different and increasingly worse it seems. Well, not so much the storms but the effects.

Houston is constantly growing and I'd bet we have more concrete than any other city. You can drive for 50 miles and still be in Houston (that's true). All that paving and concrete blocks soil absorption so the water just starts standing. This city has always been reactionary - no zoning or master plan. This time anything >130' below sea level got flooded. I think it was 115 or 120 last time.
