From 2014, this Emmy award winning 4 part miniseries presents the relationship between a New England couple, their exploits and life changing developments over a period of 25 years.

First, it must be said that Olive Kitteridge is a true adult movie-- not in the sense of what has sadly become to be thought of as "adult" in cinema: explicit sex, foul language, gore, and the like; but direct adult themes, such as mature behavior, aging, enduring marriage, dignity, and the like.

This was Frances McDormand's picture, and she produced in spades, but it was superbly balanced by the inclusion of the great Richard Jenkins, and later, Bill Murray. The acting all around could not have been done better. Even the Kitteridge son as an adult was fine work by John Gallagher, Jr., but in my view he was mostly wrong for the role. His complex part must have been difficult to cast. The final choice amounted to his character as imagined from a writer's feminine point of view. If there was any fault in the characterization, it was in the writing.

I couldn’t help noticing a partial similarity in McDormand’s “Olive” role to the “Saga” personality of Sofia Helin in the Swedish series Broen (“The Bridge”). Saga was of course over the top in the grips of her Asberger’s type personality; whereas Olive’s nature is much more attenuated: strict and near humorless, but within normal limits. The two ladies even share a mild physical similarity-- both eminently watchable.

The film's subject matter would be a good candidate for the "A" (for Adult) rating suggested by Siskel and Ebert years ago. The "A" rating was a good idea then, and it's still a good idea. But since the current target is Millenial and adolescent viewers, this idea is not likely to get much reconsideration.

If only more films of this high quality were made, concentrating on excellence, believable drama, and story! Sit back, relax, and enjoy film making at its finest.

Doc’s rating: Acting - 10/10; Story - 8/10; Technical - 8/10

Murray's "I'm waiting for the dog to die so I can shoot myself" is one of the most hilariously depressing things I've ever heard.

This was a phenomenal bit of tv. Jenkins and McDormand were terrific. I don't normally let awards get to me but I was pissed off that Bill Murray got most of the awards for this show when the 2 leads were far, far better.

Heh, heh. You're right-- that was a great line! I was thinking Olive said that, because I thought it was uncharacteristically humorous of her.

Looks like I may have screwed up the posted photo. Drat!

I loved this mini-series.

Unexpectedly amazing. Great performances, wonderfully written and was about some very true stuff that really got to you on a different level.
