As I shouted, I think Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones is the most gifted drummer. Potentialy. It's just that he's a lazy f*. I heard you can even tune watches by him. I think Bonzo of LZ would be next, as withnessed in Moby Dick , Stairway etc. But I think Ginger Baker is the most special and versatile one. I have this silly theory about thinking of him as Federer, while Bonzo and Charlie would be McEnroe and Sampras, respectively.

So, what's your opinion?

1. Charlie Watts
2. John Bonham
3. Mitch Mitchell
4. Ginger Baker
5. Buddy Rich
6. Ian Pace
7. Lars Ulrich

You may wonder why there's no Keith Moon, but I think he was a nut, haven't heard anyithing special by him.

I was just recently introduced to Buddy Rich. The man is an impeccable drummer.

Mesmerized is only joking probaly...He can't possibly believe Ringo's the best.

- Is Ringo the best drummer in the world?
John Lennon - He isn't even the best drummer in the Beatles!

Typical Lennon humor... I don't like 99.9% of drummers, but I like Ringo. He's tasteful, just like Don Henley was for the Eagles.

Why don't you like them? Because they're arrogant (Ginger), ruined themselves (Bonzo, Keith)? I love Ringo. He's absolutely none of those things.

Yeah, it's Buddy Rich.

I only saw him on Muppet show.

I just saw that Moby Dick again, and it's scary...too fast for me. Ginger has more variety and ideas though, and is actually my favorite, but Charlie, Bonzo and Mitch are simply better imho. Jeff Costello, you get my immediate sympathies for voting for Ginger. Who knows, you may be right afterall. Speed isn't everything. Maybe ginger really is the best afterall.

The .01% make up Bonham, Moon, Baker.... Charlie never did a damn thing, lol... Buddy was fast, but he had no melody... When it comes to music, I only care about the music.. Don't care if they were all murderers, lol.

The best drummer in the world is the drummer who just plays drums :p

And I would never think of Ginger Baker being the best drummer in the world. He's just OK. Technique -wise I've never seen anything that floored me from a strictly rhythmical standpoint, yet he talks of other drummers as if they are all garbage, even going so far as stating that John Bonham "couldn't swing a sack of *****". Well, Bonham has my vote, Ginger, you old, crusty, grouchy hack. Cream was your ticket to ride, and guess what? The ride's over, buddy. Have fun at the reunion concerts

Beware of Mr. Banker! :)

I think every drummer thinks they are the best, and I guess they are right.. everyone has their own taste.

True. I'd say, in all seriousness, that the best drummer is one that services the song and, if able, showcases some flair with complicated and/or tasteful fill work. grew up with RUSH as my favorite band back in the late 80's and to this day I still have yet to hear Peart lay down the stank. He's rigid and stiff. A great drummer technically, and certainly inventive and progressive, but if I needed session work done, I'd choose someone who could lay a groove down maybe a little behind the beat. All a matter of taste, like you say. :)

John Densmore should be on here.. His drumming for The Doors is very nice, especially in the studio... Wasn't so tight like so many of the other drummers..

And I totally agree about Neil Peart --- so stiff.. I never felt anything, and I saw Rush live.

When I first started playing, it was ALL about technicality, but after producing, I thought of the overall sound, and sometimes more is less, or something that sounds easy, might not be, and sometimes what is easy is best. I can say the same about any instrument..

John Lennon never said that. It was said by a comedian a couple years after John died. John never would have dissed Ringo like that. And Ringo was an awesome drummer. The best ever? Of course not, but still great. In my opinion he's 100x the drummer Charlie Watts is. Watts is boring and weak and technically really poor.

I don't know who I'd vote for in a poll like this. Neil Peart is a great drummer but I'm not a fan of his percussion orchestra approach to drumming, Buddy Rich is probably the best but it's not right to compare jazz drumming to rock drumming. I guess maybe Bonham for my tastes. But I really enjoy watching Ringo drum covers, such as this...

Sorry, I either faltsy remember reading/hearing it, or the person who I got it from was misinformed or lying. Sorry. :)

I do agree Ringo was great. My favorite is Polythene Pam.

And then I guess I was wrong about Charlie too. :)

Morgan Ågren.

But off your list, it was a tough choice, went with Peart.

Buddy Rich was the greatest drummer of all time.

Ginger Baker and Mitch Mitchell were the greatest of the 60's rock drummers. No one could get the audience going like Ginger. His jazz background and "cave man" style influenced thousands of drummers. He was the Gene Krupa of the 1960's.

Charlie Watts was a very simplistic drummer, but no one had better "time" or feel.

Neal Peart is a very well-rounded drummer who puts me in mind a little of Louie Bellson. Neal has a strong technique and imagination; and kudos must be given to him for playing that well at his age (like B. Rich did).

I'm partial to the drummer/percussionist Art Tripp, who played most notably with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention; and also Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band.. ~Doc

You're not the only one to attribute that quote to John ... because it sounds just like something he would say. And I was very disappointed when I first heard it, and was relieved to find out he hadn't said it. I've never heard him publicly say anything negative about Ringo or George.

And you're not wrong about Charlie Watts, because you're entitled to your opinion. Me, I don't like his drumming at all, but who am I anyway!
