"Three decades after The Karate Kid, original stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka are heading back to the dojo. The duo are set to reprise their roles as underdog Daniel LaRusso (Macchio) and bully Johnny Lawrence (Zabka) in a 10-episode straight-to-series follow-up called Cobra Kai for subscription service YouTube Red.

The series, set to bow in 2018, is set 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament and revolves around a down and out Johnny who, seeking redemption, reopens the infamous Cobra Kai dojo. It reignites his rivalry with a now-successful Daniel, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita). The half-hour comedy follows the duo addressing demons from their past and present frustrations — through (what else?) karate.

Josh Heald (Hot Tub Time Machine) as well as duo Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Harold and Kumar) will pen the script and exec produce. Macchio and Zabka will co-exec produce. Hurwitz and Schlossberg will direct much of the series. Will Smith's Sony Pictures Television Studios-based Overbrook Entertainment will exec produce with James Lassiter and Caleeb Pinkett overseeing for the company.

"Like everyone who grew up in the 1980s, the three of us are enormous fans of The Karate Kid,” Heald, Hurwitz and Schlossberg said in a joint statement. "Cobra Kai will be a true continuation of the original films — packed with comedy, heart and thrilling fight scenes. We can’t wait to reignite the LaRusso-Lawrence rivalry, and we’re thankful to our partners at YouTube Red, Sony Pictures Television and Overbrook for their shared enthusiasm in making our dream project a reality."

Daniels, who said Karate Kid still resonates with YouTube users today, noted that the series comes as part of an effort to age up YouTube Red's demographic from 18-34 to the more advertiser-coveted 18-49 set. "It had all the elements you look for in a strong show. It had heart, it had laughs, it had drama, it had characters with strong points of view. All of it was there in the pitch," Daniels said."

I think it's because it's not a movie, but a web series that will be exclusive on YouTube Red.

I watched the series and I have to say this is exactly what I had hoped for and it succeeds on so many levels. A meshing of 80's nostalgia and remembering the Karate Kid original. It is more of a role reversal this time with Johnny seeking redemption for himself for both himself and his estranged son while Daniel, shocked at the opening of Cobra Kai, goes to extremes to stop Johnny from running the school and even entering the All Valley Karate Tournament. If you liked The Karate Kid, then you have to see this...

Especially since it was announced today there will be a season 2!!!!

Are there any other YouTube Red exclusives worth watching? I'll give the free trial a spin, but seems a waste fro just one show.

I've heard nothing but great things. The fact that YouTube is fast-tracking the second season speaks volumes.

Either that or they have nothing else in the barn.

Johnny Lawrence may not be the hero we need, but he's the hero we deserve.

I'm on episode 3 and surprisingly stunned by how good this show is.

Exceptionally great TV shows like this that can be watched by the whole family are hard to find, and this shows better than most out there.

I have to keep myself updated about this series.
I was expecting a pile of crap and I got surprised.
As a BIG fan of the early Karate Kid's, I mean really BIG fan, probably the most times I've watched a movie I was reluctant about a series.
I completely loved William Zabka, just perfect.

Who is even more excited that it's on Netflix now and there will be a Season 3 in 2021. The trailer for Netflix showed some Season 3 footage and I'm going out on a limb, but I think Chozen is returning when Daniel heads to Okinawa.

This is on Netflix now so we watched the first two seasons. Pretty good stuff. I was a little worried about them maybe making Daniel the bad guy and they flirted with that a little. It was really well written. Be interesting to see if Netflix was smart enough to bring the whole team along that's responsible for the show or if they are gonna take over. After watching the first 2 seasons back to back I feel like we're gonna be able to tell right away if Netflix uses their own people. might still be good tho. We'll see.

Absolutely! He's a busy guy on IMDb so I wouldn't be surprised.
I watched the trilogy again recently, part II doesn't get the respect it should, it holds up a lot better than the other parts I think

Okay, I didn't get to ask this in January, but who saw Season 3 and what did you think? It's like each season gets better and better! I did like that we got Kreese's backstory. Little trivia, the bully who makes fun of and ultimately gets beaten by Kreese outside the soda shop is Jesse Kove, Martin Kove's son. Great return of some original characters as well and love the twists. While Hiro Koda still served as action director, Simon Rhee of Best of the Best trained the cast before production started.

The Season 3 finale was so awesome...now word is that Season 4 will now come this Fall/Winter 2021, according to Netflix head Ted Sarondos.

Season 4 had aired and it marked the return of Terry Silver, with Thomas Ian Griffith, who joins John Kreese as they attempt to team up for the new All-Valley Under 18 Tournament against Miyagi Do Karate (Daniel's dojo) and Eagle Fang Karate (Johnny's dojo) as the two latter factions attempt to join forces.

Season 5 was not only announced, but shooting already had finished in December so expect it later this year

Saw the first two episodes yesterday and wasn’t exactly all too impressed. I mean, it was fun enough, but a little straight forward and just “there”.

But I didn’t rewatch the movie trilogy for nothing, so I’m gonna watch some more. I also know it gets better and better with the seasons and I’m not gonna judge it just by two episodes either…

I’m looking forward to see more.

Casually, I just finished season 4 last night and I have to say, I'm loving it. I mean, I grew up watching the movies, but I have to applaud the showrunners for 1) taking this story and spinning it in a new direction, 2) knowing how to lean into nostalgia effectively while bringing back characters in a way that feels natural, and 3) knowing how to flip the script while making it feel earned and organic. I'm not saying the show is flawless or a masterpiece or whatnot, but I'm enjoying every minute of it.

I should also add, although most of the main cast has always been pretty solid, I was always a bit iffy on Tanner Buchanan, who I had also seen in Designated Survivor... but man, he really, really improved this season.

Finally getting around to this final season. It started off a little rocky for the first couple of episodes, where it sort of seemed like they couldn't figure out what to do with some of the characters while the got all the pieces in play to head to the tournament. Alas, that didn't last long, as once things got going, the show once again became very engaging, compelling us into binge mode. While I agree that the case has been pretty strong across the board, Peyton List has consistently been the best of the bunch. Her character arc has been my favorite, and she delivered some heartbreaking scene with believable histrionics. All the kids have improved over time, but List has just been killing it.

Anyway, two more episodes to go and then back to a holding pattern until the final episodes are released.

And...finished.

Honestly, I never thought this show would last as long as it did. I am a guy that tends to think that most shows tend to go on a bit too long, and very rarely have a satisfying ending. Two of my favorite shows ever (Lost and BSG) failed to stick the landing, especially Lost, even if I have grown to like the ending at this point. That said, I really enjoyed the final season of Cobra Kai, and I have to say it pretty much nailed the ending. I do think it went on a bit too long, but the weaker material is really more in the middle seasons, and I like all the seasons to varying degrees.

https://popcorn4u.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Cobra-Kai-Season-6-Part-2.webp

Spoilers ahead for the final season:

Anyway, the show had sort of drifted away from its original formula of gobs of 80s-inspired cheese slathered on the central point of the rivalry of Daniel and Johnny, which tended to highlight their different approaches to the martial arts, but it always remained fun and several writing and casting choices that appeared risky at first, ended up paying dividends, so the show managed to stay afloat for its entire run. I liken it to the floating wooden disc in Daniel's back yard. Sometimes it capsized, dumping the proceedings into the drink, but like those intrepid students in the various dojos, the show would clamber back up and find its balance quickly.

I for one thought the show was heading for shark-jumping territory when they teased Terry Silver a few seasons ago, but man did they strike gold with this guy. He ended up being one of the more memorable villains on television in recent years: Thomas Ian Griffith can chew scenery for days, is an actual trained martial artist, and his towering presence really helped to sell the level of threat he needed to portray.

https://static1.colliderimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/cobra-kai-season-6-part-2-terry-silver.jpg

While the show had perhaps taken on too many teen characters, the writers smartly chopped many of them away for the final season, and made the correct choices on who they ended up focusing on for the final run of episodes. Miguel and Tory were always the most interesting of all the kids, and while I had concerns the writers would cop out and go the Sam and Robby route at the end, they correctly focused on Tory and Miguel, while simultaneously resurrecting the Cobra Kai dojo and putting Johnny back in charge. That's why we showed up in the first place, right?

Ah, Johnny. Look, this guy has charisma for days, is a pretty decent actor, and I just adored how his character developed over the seasons. I can't think of a better ending for this iconic character, and I was thrilled how it all turned out for him. I was also less annoyed by Daniel by the end, even if the Daniel LaRusso character will always remain in the annoying column for me. It was cool to see Daniel in a Cobra Kai gi, and the scene with Daniel and Johnny holding the trophy and Daniel delivering the "You're alright, Lawrence" line was pretty much perfect.

A couple more quick notes:

This show had a knack for being cheesy and over the top for most of its run time, enough to make it easy to overlook contrivances and logical inconsistencies, while maintaining the ability to suddenly delivery really poignant and emotional dramatic scenes. I was taken off guard multiple times, especially by Peyton List, and both my wife and I were reaching for tissues at various times during the show's run. Bravo for managing to not get preachy about social issues for the entire show, too. Quite an achievement these days

I was impressed with the kids that went ahead and took up marital arts and got fairly good as the show progressed. Although they obviously had stunt people doing the super crazy stuff, many of them got good enough to be pretty damned convincing for many of the scenes. You know, until Rayna Vallandingham as Zorah showed up. Once they had a 13-time world champion out on the floor, the differences in speed and agility were like night and day. That girl is scary.

Goodbye Cobra Kai. Thank you for all the years of nostalgia, fun, tears and laughter. A truly Gen-X experience that managed to construct a generational bridge between two groups of people that couldn't be more different. All it took was heaps of cheese and some bad-ass martial arts.

Just remember: Stay true to yourself, and don't be a pu**y! ;)
