View Full Version : All Your List Are Belong To Us: The MoFo Video Games Countdown

Ahoy!

This countdown should be reasonably straightforward: PM me your list of 25 favourite video games, ranked from 1 to 25.

http://i.imgur.com/9AOnOrP.png

Be they from the golden age of Nintendo, the early days of arcades, the rise of online 'services' or tapping your cellphone screen three times a day, bring them all!

The only restriction is that a game has to have been commercially available at some point, either on store shelves, in arcades or in online shops such as Xbox Live, Playstation Network, Steam or the Apple and Android app stores.

Oh, and no porny stuff. None. Although you can PM me some links.

http://i.imgur.com/D7bQzzn.jpg

I think this will be an interesting one, with a mixture of fond memories and current obsessions.

It would be great if we get enough lists to have a top 100 list, but I honestly think that'll be a tough ask. Prove me wrong! I'll keep it open for a month or so, gently chiding and cajoling people who I think could submit a killer list as I go.

http://i.imgur.com/KVh4Rxb.jpg

The meta thread is here (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=50057) if you feel that something needs discussed.

Finally, thanks to False Writer for suggesting the idea and to the lovely Rodent for his mad graphics skillZ! :D

One guy's already working hard at narrowing his ballot down to just 25...

EDIT - I'm aiming for a 25th August (2017) cut off date for lists. :)

No, that's what I meant: it was extremely clever.

That was one of the first memes I think I ever saw. So early, in fact, that I didn't really entirely understand the concept, even though it was kinda funny.

Sorry!

6 lists in so far. I'm nowhere near finished my own but am exploring some ideas around supplemental content from people who aren't members of the site but are known gamers/developers. Their choices won't sully the MoFo list, of course, and will merely add some flavour. ;)

Yoda

No worries. First time I saw it was that big Flash video where the phrase was plastered on road signs and billboards. I remember thinking "how is this everywhere and I've never heard of it?" Took me awhile to realize it was just a bunch of (sometimes really good!) Photoshops, I guess. But the video made it feel like it was already a thing. Though maybe it was, and someone had just collected everyone else's Photoshops. I have no idea.

Anyway: supplemental content. Sounds intriguing! And exciting.

I'll definitely be making a specific point to say a few things about most of my favorites if/when they appear, to be sure.

Mine are mainly SNES and Amiga 1200 with a handful of PS1... and a couple PS2 games that I genuinely enjoyed.
I had a few Game Boy games shortlisted but they ultimately got cut.
Looked into a few Atari and NES games and some other stuff from the 80s but I wasn't that much into videogames at that age.
My gaming age was the 1990s.

Loved how Amiga magazines used to come with demos on the cover :D
I had thousands of those things.

That's the order in which I owned them, with the PC off and on since the late 90s, and Pac Man and Galaga arcade machines appearing and disappearing along the way. The only ones I don't have right now are the Speccy, ST and Megadrive although emulation means I can still play my old games.

7 lists in now, keep 'em coming!

Knowing that the deadline is still a ways away, I'll take a few more days to put together my list.

It's a lot harder than I thought. There's so many games that I'm a fan of but not sure if I'd really put them as "greatest games ever" while there are games that I know have been very influential but I barely actually played, biggest example if Final Fantasy 7, I watched my brother play just about all of it but never actually played it myself.

Oh and here are my consoles:

Current:
Xbox One
Nintendo Switch

Past consoles I owned:
Xbox 360
PS3
Wii U

PS2

Megadrive is a much cooler name. ;)

I had a Multi-Mega (a Megadrive/Genesis/MegaCD and portable CD player all in one) for a few short weeks until a mate broke it. They're now worth around £300.

How are we handling remakes/ports? Especially considering there's a bit of a spectrum of how much something is a remake. It seems like end of those spectrum is pretty easy. On one side there's basically games that are pure ports. Like how there's a lot of nintendo games that have been ported from SNES to various handhelds and future systems. I'm guessing those can get lumped together somewhat non-controversially. Then there are dramatic remakes, like the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 remake that is overhauling all of the gameplay and basically only keeping the storyline.

Just curious if I should include notes on if a game is a port/remake. For example there may be one or two Dreamcast ports on my list.

Any Genesis owners or ROM addicts ever played Target Earth? That's on my list. It was crazy hard, but so cool to choose your own weapons each mission and to have friendly AI help out along your missions. Really struggling to draw a line between where I personally enjoyed a game and games that I thought were technically or historically unique, even if I didn't love it.

If it's a straight HD remaster, then it'll be included with votes for the original game. Remakes, like the FFVII you mentioned or the upcoming Yakuza Kiwami, will have a different feel to them and I'll be counting them separately.

There are some remasters coming out which have gameplay differences - The FFXII one has a new game mode and the Crash Bandicoot thing apparently feels completely different to the original in its jumping mechanics - but these seem to be a relatively recent phenomenon that they can be taken on a case by case basis.

Ports are all going to be counted as one game.

Me too. I've been struggling to have even a loose "idea" of what my criteria are. Because I want the list to be personal & nostalgic, but also judicial and current.

How I imagine this is, if there were a clone of myself with all my non-gaming memories, which games would I most recommend to that clone?

It's trying to split the difference between my belief that games have improved over time, and the very real idea that some of these games are attached to huge leaps of personal growth that I wouldn't skip over.

Generally speaking it'll still mean I'll favor relatively current games over the more common sort of judging criteria I see from other people (which I very crudely roll up into a cluster of: Which games would I most want to re-experience in the context of first playing it). But it's really hard to actually balance between nostalgia and hindsight, so I gave up on perfection and settled for good enough.

Also thumbs up on the ports ruling. I'll be including whatever system I primarily played it on, but I'm all for lumping them together.

Pretty much all this.
My first Genesis game was Last Battle (well, not counting Altered Beasts that came with the system!). That carries a lot of weight for me for several reasons. 1) It totally reminded me of that B sci-fi Cyborg, starring Van Damme, and I really loved that movie as a kid. I would pretend I was Van Damme kicking everything. 2) This was the first console game I had played that had oversized characters that were a third the height of the game screen. That was nuts back then!! While NES/SNES had dinky little squats running around the screen, Genesis gave us so much more detail through the scale of their character designs, and I totally fell in love with it. 3) It was my first game purchase!!! I was a Genesis virgin, and Last Battle was my big-boobied senior girlfriend to my 7th-grade boy inexperience.

I'm not sure the game holds true over time without all of that, but it still a very enjoyable and difficult game to beat. I even remember the first time I finished it. I was so excited that I told my uncle who was smoking on the front porch of my grandparent's house, thinking he would be inspired to come in and watch the rolling story line and credits sequence. No. He just responded with a half-hearted and somewhat confused "good job?"

So where does that go on MY list!? And does it even belong next to games like Skyrim or Dark Souls, neither of which I finished!?

lol?

I had that feeling too, so I decided to first do a ranking of each of my favorite games per system. But that also made me sad because some of those favorite games of an entire console still couldn't fit :(

Also sent in a draft list. Which has both made me want to revise it already, but also kinda want to wash my hands of it.

The exercise of going through this was really enlightening though, as it always is when I have to actually rank pieces of art against other and not just say they're all really good.

Edit: Also I feel really badly for my handheld favorites, as I played a TON of handhelds as a kid and have a lot of favorites, but they really suffer competing against the larger platform games without biasing for them a bit.

Sent in my list. It was easy for me since I don't play videogames since 2015 and my memories of my favorites have been well filtered by time. There are some games in my list that I played I lot when I was 13-14 years old.

Also, videogames back in the year 2000 were better than today. :D At least there were a lot more strategy games which is my genre. Today graphics are awesome but most AAA games today are rather dumb, well Fallout 3 was the ultimate example of a stupid game (even though I saw a reference of it in School Live).

Oh yeah, here is an interesting article about the stupidity of Fallout 3:

https://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=27085

Fallout 4 at least was a major improvement over it.

Yoda
07-28-17, 11:17 PM
I read that article awhile ago. It certainly makes a good argument that there are stupid things about Fallout 3's story, but that's not much of an argument that it's a stupid game. Games are about the experience of playing it, and the ostensible reason for the gameplay is a lot less important than the gameplay itself. It's not like a movie, where the story is usually the point. In games, it's more of an excuse. Most classic games have little to no story.

Camo

I've never played Fallout 4, is it like better or more faithful or whatever to Fallout the series?

Think mine is a pretty mainstream list. Most should make it other than maybe some second and thirds in a series as more may have went for the originals.

That's great! I honestly wasn't sure how many we would get, I was hoping we'd get at least 20, so hopefully it'll be closer to 30.

So does this mean that we'll have a top 100? Or is it still too early to tell?

Don't know if the current number is even enough for a usable, realistic top 50 although it'll be the weekend before I've got time to look at everyone's entries closely. Then the head scratching will begin. ;)

It didn't take me over an hour to realize the omissions I had made. Oh well. That's kinda the nature of the beast with lists and they could be constantly re-done.

BTW, umm...of course it wasn't a game based off an upcoming rebooted Disney cartoon or the game it was based off.

Portal was a tough one, yeah =\ very different games. And the voice acting was just perfect. But there just were too few spots to use!!

There was an old online MUD that I wanted so bad to list, but I wasn't sure if it met rules restrictions and I would have had to rearrange a lot of my list. It was a great stupid little game though. Realms of Kaos back in the very late 90s and/or early 2000s. It was a simple turn-based dungeon RPG. Graphics sucked with just single stack images for rooms, and you used the keys N, S, W, E to move room to room via the map. It was a brutal game where if you were killed, you dropped all your gear and loot that could then be collected by anyone wandering by. As long as they took the time to read the text description of each room upon entering. There was no graphic representation of items on the floor. You could have individual items Soul-bound, but to do that you have to find a cleric/priest role, have all the proper spell materials, and HAND OVER YOUR ITEM to a stranger on faith that they would give it back once the cast was complete.

OMG i loved this game and played it for years with a small group of friends. Each day around like 5AM the servers would reset, and all the boss creatures that could drop rare "one-a-days" would respawn. It was a free for all. 10 kids on a single screen all working on the spawn. If you could survive the journey to, anyone could enter the screen and help out. When the spawn died, it dropped whatever rare item it carried. Whoever picked it up would pray to get out of the room and to safety before everyone else killed him, dropping the item again for another person to then try their luck at escaping. Pretty much last man standing type of scenario. Even if you survived that, everyone ressing back in town knew where you were and your game name so they would camp the nearest town and ambush you on entry.

It was great fun.

Here's a video talking about it. Volume sucks, but great memories. Not mine btw. Just a random vid.

Between you and me? I never even knew about the game until I found it on some emulation site back in college. I am so glad I found it though. The characters are easy to fall in love with. You get to screw up time and change history where everything just becomes something different in your current timeline. Side games were cute and fun. I'm actually shocked now by how much I'm praising it, but it was really a great game. I highly recommend this title to anyone curious about old console RPGs but with no patience to screw around trying to find a good one. Chrono-Trigger is really all you need ;)

I just recently bought it as a download on the PlayStation store. MEMORIES!!! lol.

Chrono Trigger is on everything, almost literally.

SNES, PS1, iOS, Android, DS. If you've got a capable phone that's probably the easiest way currently.

I've bought a few Android releases of older games, usually so I can play them directly on my Android telly, and they've been rock solid ports.

Slappydavis
09-11-17, 02:07 PM
1. Zelda: OOT
2. FF7
3. Half Life 2
4. SotC
5. Dark Souls

(I also really want to put an Elder Scrolls game there too, but I think the audience might be just divided enough)

I do think there'll be a lot of platform funneling though. So I wouldn't be surprised to see a near sweep by older console games (like 2 or 3 Mario titles, a couple Zelda, +FF7 or something) or a reversal of that and a near sweep of the top tier PC games (HL2, HL1, Deus Ex, a couple Elder Scrolls games).

I'm betting the "shock" of the list will be what games DON'T make it. Like a few games that we mutually agree should appear on a list, but it just happened that not many of us actually played it. Like a Starcraft:Broodwar, System Shock 2, Deus Ex type of game.
