View Full Version : My Favorite Onscreen Television Chemistry

Gideon58

I already did threads on the best and worst movie chemistry between actors so I thought I would take a shot at television. This thread will include all kinds of chemistry, not just romantic/sexual chemistry...there may be pairs of actors on here of the same sex because what this thread is about two actors, male, female, whatever, who whenever they shared the screen, there was something magic there...every moment they spent onscreen was golden. OK, this my list of favorite onscreen television chemistry:

George Wendt and John Ratzenberger, Cheers

Sometimes they disrespected each other, but Cliff and Norm, when it came down to it, couldn't really depend on anyone but each other and Wendt and Ratzenberger brought this vividly to life every week for 11 seasons.

Mark-Paul Goselaar and Tiffani Amber-Thiessen, Saved by the Bell

https://metrouk2.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/saved-by-the-bellmain.jpg

It's become very chic to make fun of this show, but there is no denying the chemistry between these two.

Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce, Frasier

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/05/08/23/2879449000000578-3074197-image-m-32_1431124990977.jpg

These two actors were absolutely wonderful together...you never doubted for a minute that these two weren't really brothers.

George Tobias and Sandra Gould, Bewitched

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0257/3165/products/RSJ89773_grande.jpg?v=1478995428

I think the Alice Pearce VS Sandra Gould debate will never end but I preferred Sandra and these two had me on the floor every time they hit my TV screen.

Loretta Swit and Larry Linville, MASH

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/78/bb/19/78bb191d768881c3ba85260132e45813.jpg

Especially during the earlier seasons of the show, these two were hysterical.

Ryan O'Neal and Mia Farrow, Peyton Place

http://i.onionstatic.com/avclub/4419/70/16x9/960.jpg

For those old enough to remember, O'Neal and Farrow become stars playing star-crossed lovers Rodney and Allison.

I've never seen "Peyton Place", but I agree with everyone else on the list, especially Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce in "Frasier". They would probably be higher on my list. I don't think anyone else would have been a better choice for the role of Niles.

I love the pairing of Frasier and Niles, too. If I am correct, I believe I read somewhere that even David Hyde Pierce's mother said that he looked like he could be Kelsey Grammer's brother - and that was before Frasier was even a show. The casting was perfect there.

Gideon58 I love this idea for this one. I have this crazy thing with just loving specific "couples" on TV. It doesn't matter if they are a romantic pairing or not. If the actors have great chemistry, I just end up loving them "together".

Kiss me quick and say million!!!

Ridiculous couple but I loved them. Ohhh Frank.

Marlo Thomas and Ted Bessell, That Girl

http://www.sitcomsonline.com/photopost/data/789/marlothomas_tedbessell_01.jpg

ABC struck gold with these two, sparking a five season on air romance between Ann Marie and Donald Hollinger that culminated in an engagement. Something tells me that if Ann and Donald had gotten married they would have become boring, but the chemistry between the actors was undeniable.

Gideon58
07-11-17, 03:52 PM
93.

Jean Smart and Richard Gilliland, Designing Women

http://www.sitcomsonline.com/photopost/data/653/medium/annierichgillilandjean.JPG

Though Smart's character would eventually find true happiness with Bill (Doug Barr), I much preferred here chemistry with Gilliland. I don't how many people knew that Gilliand was paired with Jean Smart on the show but was married to co-star Annie Potts IRL.

Andre Braugher and Kyle Secor, Homicide: Life on the Street

Naya Rivera and Heather Morris, Glee

Dave Madden, Danny Bonaduce, The Partridge Family

She may have been his employer, but this relationship went way deeper than work...these two people genuinely cared about each other. Benson knew Jessica's husband was scum but never said anything bad about him to Jessica's face, but always had Jessica's back.

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/71/66/74/716674b721823b7db1b528b3327253db.jpg

Their main MO was get rich quick schemes but every time Kramer and Newman hit the screen, major laughs were guaranteed.

Michael Imperioli and Drea De Matteo, The Sopranos

The chemistry these two actors created burned a hole through the television screen.

Jerry Orbach and Benjamin Bratt, Law & Order

I remember being very upset when Chris Noth left the show, thinking they would never find somebody who could work with Jerry Orbach as well, but I was wrong.

This show was famous for overlooking great chemistry among their actors but this one they got right...Jesse and Nicole were one of the few couples on this show that generated serious television heat.

83.

Patrick Duffy and Suzanne Somers, Step By Step

When I first heard these two were doing a sitcom together, I really had a hard time wrapping my head around it, until I saw the two of them togther...these two produced some serious sexual chemistry together.

Gideon58

Susan Dey and Jimmy Smits, LA Law

Dey's Grace Van Owen was originally romantically paired with Harry Hamlin's character, Michael Cuzak, but I liked her much better with Victor Fuentes...then again, was there anyone with whom Jimmy Smits didn't have chemistry?

Gideon58

Julia Louis Dreyfuss and Patrick Warburton, Seinfeld

Admit it...these two ALWAYS brought the chemistry and the funny.

Ed O'Neill and Sofia Vergara, Modern Family

http://www2.pictures.zimbio.com/zp/N7R230Abxvkx.jpg

This one took me by surprise...I really didn't see this couple working, but they totally do. The chemistry between these two is real...you really believe these two people are madly in love with each other, no matter what they put each other through.

Sandra Oh and Isaiah Washington, Grey's Anatomy

I know you were probably expecting Carroll and Jean Stapleton but if you were a fan of the show, think about this one for a minute...remember when Archie spoke to Gloria before she got married? Or comforted her after her miscarriage? Or anytime Gloria would climb onto Archie's lap? Every time Gloria sat in Archie's lap. it was appointment television and always had me in tears...and don't even get me started on the show where the Stivics left the show and moved to California...O'Connor and Struthers were enchanting together...Gloria brought out the best in Archie.

I've looked at the whole list so far and am really enjoying it. I've seen most of these but without going back, I'll just touch on a few I can remember off-hand:

Archie Bunker and Gloria:
I love this choice, for all the reasons you stated and for two favorite moments: When Gloria had her miscarriage and excited grandfather-to-be Archie comes to her, carrying stuffed toys etc. for the baby, and she says, "Daddy, I lost the baby." Archie acts like he doesn't really know what she's saying or he refuses to believe it and says, "You lost the baby?" Then he goes to her and just cradles her in his arms. Even this old man still cries thinking about that moment. Then the episode where Archie calls Gloria "Little Girl" (like he did in almost every episode) and Gloria says, "I'm not your little girl anymore." Archie almost gets furious and says, "Don't you ever say that! You'll always be my little girl." Just so classic and heart-tugging.

Andy Sipowicz and Bobby Simone:

Andy's second partner and my favorite of his. Bobby was open and honest with Andy and they always had each other's back. My favorite moment is when Bobby finds out that a body on the morgue table is Andy's street-cop son and he has to tell him and Bobby is almost gulping with disbelief and the burden of having to reveal that painful truth to Andy.

Bayliss and Pembleton:

I never missed Homicide: Life on the Street and I loved it when these two were together. Of course, the show always went through the roof when Pembleton got a suspect in "The Box." But these two were awesome together.

Hawkeye and Trapper John:

For me, any pairing on M*A*S*H* is great, because it's my all-time favorite television show. I was more of a Hawkeye/B.J. fan, but Hawkeye and Trapper were great together also. Wayne Rogers could pull some of the greatest faces I've seen on TV, but I always thought that they gave Hawkeye the lion's share of funny lines, making Trapper more of the straight man to Hawkeye. When B.J. came along he was more of Hawkeye's equal. I wonder if Wayne Rogers left the show because of the lines, the money, or the need to do something else?

I like your pick of James Pickens Jr. with Chandra Wilson and Ellen Pompeo. I think he has such presence on the show, he can be paired with anyone and tear up the screen.

Bob Newhart and Suzanne Pleshette on The Bob Newhart Show: They were one of my favorite all-time couples. I've always loved her since childhood and I thought she almost stole the show from him in certain scenarios.

Great pairings, can't wait to see the rest. There's a certain cop show couple (male/female) from the 80's that I won't name but I certainly hope to see. They always had they're private time at the end of the show. I hope you know whom I'm talking about and you've watched this show.

I don't think anyone saw this one coming, myself included...another terrific bromance with a twist involving two characters who should have had nothing in common. The chemistry between the actors was so strong that the characters actually got married during the final season. I loved how every show ended with these two sitting outside Denny's office smoking cigars and sipping scotch.

Another one I didn't see coming...Tracee used to be on a syndicated sitcom called Girlfriends and I thought she was the weakest part of the show and was convinced that when the show went off the air she would never work again. Proven wrong again, Tracie Ellis Ross has rock solid chemistry with Anderson and even won an Emmy last year for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

Not to take anything away from her own talent, but did you know that Tracie Ellis Ross is the daughter of former Supremes lead singer, Diana Ross? I didn't until a few months ago and was jazzed to find that out.

Jimmy Smits and Kim Delaney were magic together on NYPD Blue. I especially loved Kim Delaney. My sister is a huge soap opera fan as well as movie/TV fan, and she would keep me informed on people on soap operas especially if they made the move to TV or movies. Kim Delaney was one of those, as my sister watched her on All My Children.

Anthony Geary and Genie Francis on General Hospital---I remember this vividly because my sister had me watching this show with her...There were a few ladies on the show that I liked quite a bit so by extension, I got hooked on the show. I remember sis pulling for Laura's ex, Scott Baldwin (Kin Shriner) to get back with her and couldn't believe Laura ended up marrying her rapist! And how the show kept flashing back in Laura's memory of Luke assaulting her in Frank Smith's disco to the tune of Herb Alpert's "Rise." Man, I'm remembering too much of that show. But you're right, Gideon, the wedding was by far the biggest thing the show ever did. Then Luke became a super hero on the show and it really got ridiculous, what with the magic sword and the weather-control machine, etc. etc. with Luke saving the day every time. Still, you can't deny it's popularity. I think she still watches it. She also got me hooked on Days of Our Lives, which my wife and I recorded for most of the late 80's and through the 90's. I confess!

Diana Rigg and Patrick Macnee in The Avengers. I watched this as a kid and I was totally smitten with Diana Rigg (by the way, thanks for that picture...she's so totally beautiful there!). When she left and Linda Thorson took over, I stopped watching. No one could replace my Emma Peel. And now I watch Diana on Game of Thrones, though her time may be coming to an end---not a spoiler, just my hunch.

Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York on Bewitched. Even though I loved Elizabeth Montgomery like any red-blooded young male, I was a true fan of York. I thought he was continually hilarious and yes, he had the best chemistry with Montgomery and he was the best Darrin, especially when he got flustered by Endora and Uncle Arthur.

Please save the Cosby bashing for your own thread and do not clog up mine with it. Whatever the man did offscreen, it has nothing to do with the magic he and Rashad created onscreen. Some of their most memorable onscreen moments had nothing to do with dialogue...remember those occasional closing scenes where they would put on a record and get sexy with each other? When Jean Stapleton decided to leave the show, TPTB were so certain that she could not be replaced or that audiences would ever accept Archie with someone else, that the character was killed off. Carroll O'Connor's performance on the episode "Edith's Death" won him a Peabody Award. RIP, Carroll and Jean and thank you for all the entertainment you brought me.

Some may question the high placement of these two, but this is not the first list of mine they have made...I've said it before and I'll say it one more time...greatest example of sexual tension between two TV characters ever...the heat between these two was immediate and electric and remained viable for nine seasons and TPTB never messed it up by having the characters have sex.

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, I Love Lucy

http://c8.alamy.com/comp/BKGEF6/i-love-lucy-tv-lucille-ball-desi-arnaz-ily-002-BKGEF6.jpg

They first met on the set of a 1940 musical called Too Many Girls, they had a long and stormy marriage, storms created by his infidelity and the fact that her career was going better than his, but they did manage to have two children and made two fun movies together, The Long Long Trailer and Forever Darling but still had trouble convincing a television network to give them a show because network execs felt no one would believe them as a married couple. Lucy and Desi put together a comedy act and took it on the road which finally convinced a television network to give a little something a try called I Love Lucy...it did OK.

OK, we're down to #2...hope curiosity is piqued regarding #1, but I have to do some honorable mentions first:

Julianna Margulies and Josh Charles, The Good Wife
Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey, Grey's Anatomy
Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men
Larry Hagman and Linda Gray, Dallas
Sara Ramirez and Jessica Capshaw, Grey's Anatomy
Guillermo Diaz and Katie Lowes, Scandal
Lauri Metcalf and Michael O'Keefe, Roseanne
Megan Mullally and Rip Torn, Will & Grace
Henry Winkler and Marian Ross, Happy Days
Patrick Duffy and Victoria Principal, Dallas
Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams, Laverne and Shirley
Eric McCormack and Bobby Cannavale, Will & Grace
Roseanne and Lauri Metcalf, Roseanne

OK, let me stop, I could write all night on this subject...OK, let's do this...my #1 favorite television onscreen chemistry:

Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni, Law & Order: SVU

http://cdn02.cdn.justjared.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/hargitay-joyrocks/mariska-hargitay-chris-meloni-reunite-at-joyrocks-event-02.jpg

For my money, the gold standard in television chemistry between two actors...when NBC was originally auditioning the show they had it down to three pairs of actors (one of the other pairs was Fred Dryer and Julia Duffy; William Devane was part of the third pair, can't remember who he was paired with) but when Hargitay and Meloni took their marks, the other four actors were immediately given their walking papers. These two actors worked completely as a unit like their characters did. We loved their working relationship and the sexual tension that came about made us want them to be together. The chemistry between them was even written into the show...at one point, Elliott's wife, Kathleen was so jealous of his relationship with Olivia that Elliott and his wife actually separated for awhile. This was one thing TPTB did right...learning from past mistakes like Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd, they wisely chose to never have the relationship between Elliott and Olivia get personal, no matter how much the fans clamored for it. As much as we wanted Elliott and Olivia to hit the sheets, it would have ruined the chemistry that they created and sustained for twelve seasons. Meloni left the show a few seasons ago and it hasn't been the same.

Hope someone enjoyed the list.

I completely predicted this one. :D Now I am mad that I didn't share that prediction with anyone else to show that I was right. :) I don't know why, but there was just a vibe in the air telling me that you'd have them at #1. I would honestly love for them to be together in the end. I really would. I know, realistically, it isn't going to happen, but I can always wish for it. :) I wouldn't have minded a one-time "thing" with them. He was still going to leave the show. And I really don't think that one event would've affected the story too much afterwards (I personally think it would've helped it). And, as a side note, I really didn't like the character of his wife, anyway. :nope: Olivia was perfect for him. I honestly think the pairing of these two is one of the best ever. Great actors portraying great characters with great chemistry on top of it.

Gideon, fantastic countdown and great list! Some, like Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni I only watched a few times, due to other programs or some lame reason. I was so glad to see Archie & Edith, and Lucy & Desi. I'm proud to say that I've seen every single episode of both shows. Last year my wife and I had a Lucy & Desi complete series marathon that we recorded off of cable and enjoyed every minute. The couple from the 80's cop show I hoped you'd get to was Daniel J. Travanti and Veronica Hamel from Hill Street Blues, which was one of my favorite all-time series. In fact, you could pick several couples, both sexual and non-sexual, from that show and have awesome chemistry, including Michael Warren and Charles Haid, Taurean Blacque and Kiel Martin, Betty Thomas and Ed Marinaro, and Michael Conrad and Barbara Babcock. But here's the couple who ended many an episode in a hot tub:
