View Full Version : Which social media service do you draw the line at?

Yoda
06-16-17, 01:47 PM
When Facebook was new, I joined. Seemed interesting, has been useful.

I waited longer on Twitter. Early on it seemed almost like it was centered around texts, and I didn't really see the point. Eventually, gave it a shot, now find it moderately useful for aggregating news.

I've drawn the line at Snapchat, though. I have never been even slightly tempted to start a Snapchat account and don't even care to figure out how it differs from other social media, if at all. I think four more of my hairs just way gray as I typed that.

Where do/did you draw the line? Or do you still signup for every Next Big Thing to see what it's about?

I have Facebook, but only rarely post on it.

I've looked at the Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat accounts of celebrities I admire, but I don't use any of those platforms myself. I don't even know what Grizzle is.

if i had to guess, i'd say you probably draw the line @ Snapchat cause you're not as into just taking random pictures of yourself/your stuff and posting? i mean that's what Snapchat is basically. that and puppy ear filters.

i think we used to be Facebook friends and you would mainly post more thoughtful things (kinda like you do here) so i can see why you'd be totally uninterested in Snapchat

i am an avid Facebook user. i post mainly personal life stuff there, but every once in awhile i'll get political (not as much as i used to be - i realized it was contributing to my anxiety so had to pull back). i have a Twitter account but haven't used it in years, was kinda always 'eh' on Twitter anyway. Snapchat is fun and cute, but it used up too much data on my phone so i deleted it.

so yeah, basically just Facebook and Mofo. oh, and Instagram. i love me some Instagram.

I still mostly like Facebook. I scroll past most posts these days but it's still the best for finding old friends and seeing family pics.

I can't get into Twitter. I have tried and tried but it seems harder to interact quickly which is what I like. Our current political state has caused me to uninstall pretty recently. Even the movie people I follow just complain all day long. I can't take the tweets from either side so I am out for now.

Trying to use Instagram more. I really like it but don't check it or post much yet.

Snapchat seems like something for 13 year old girls to me, sorry.

I will try the next thing if it interests me. Maybe grizzle, where we discuss our favorite meat cuts.

I like Facebook and that's all I'm on right now(will be joining Instagram soon). Tried Twitter but gave up, find it too complicated to use/too much stuff to follow in such short posts for me, basically gives me a headache. As for Snapchat, don't like myself in photos so I'm definitely not going to go for filming myself. :nope:

Isn't Snapchat a phone app? my mobile phone is about ten years old and can't use apps, so safe from Snapchat. ;D

I think Snapshot is totally cute, but cannot figure out how it works. Love looking at Instagram photos (ditto Pinterest), but never post anything of my own. Twitter is fun, but I had no followers :(. Facebook does not appeal to me at all. My name is 100% different from the name I was born with so don't know how people from school or whatever would find me.

I think the Grizzle domain name should be purchased ASAP so Yoda can start a new social media service.

LOL. Most of my fb friends are pretty down to earth although one loves Trump. About the only person I know who does. She adores him. Came as quite a shock. I've known her for years and she is such a sweet woman. Some of the filth that comes off her fingers when talking about Obama, Hillary et al curled my hair. I clutched my pearls.

Twitter is brilliant. Love it for the news I want. I can set it to exactly what I want to see.

I despise facebook. For so many reasons.

Instagram is ok but I tend to not bother with it that much as it's just a vanity thing.

I don't do snapchat.

I founded Grizzle, so can't comment.

Freaking hilarious, Yodes. I feel pretty hip but had no damn clue what Grizzle is.

I use Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat in that order. Twitter I have but never really use.

I don't draw the line at anything really. I'm always gonna check something out if it get big enough, but I'm not jumping on everything as soon as it moves.

I do Facebook. I have twitter and instagram accounts, too. Instagram is OK. Twitter is obnoxious with that interface. I prefer this site to any of those unless I am meeting friends or corresponding for a social thing or project, but I have a phone number for that. Wish more people used it;)

I got Facebook, mainly for free communication with my family and the pool teams.
Twitter is like, a novelty thing still for me. I use it occasionally, been on there for about 5 or 7 years and have made barely 100 Tweets.

Everything else to me, just smacks of fad if I'm honest.

Facebook is surprisingly private these days tbh.
There's all sorts of settings now that allow you to lock non-friends out of your profile.

Couple years back it was very open and anyone could see what you were up to but they changed a lot of the security to stop stalkers and weirdoes and stuff.

Grizzle -- haha (I love the experiment!)

When my "little" sister got Facebook, I thought "Oh, this must not be for me"... But then on one travel, I remember a friend from Sweden having his entire memory card erased after the bartender knocked over a glass of alcohol while dancing on top of the bar. After that, I signed up for Facebook and would upload pictures every night. Later on it was beneficial because there are times people don't exchange information, and the "Mutual Friends" came in handy, but also when someone would ask "Anyone going to be in Thailand in the June" -- and kind of an open forum... And then I got drawn in a bit more with all the movie groups, though I hardly use it after finding this place almost three years ago.

I got Twitter only to link me to live streaming videos.. As for the rest, I have never seen them, I don't know anything about them. But Grizzle sounds SO interesting :D

Twitter is the most useful to me although I have yet to send out a tweet in 5+ years. I read the articles that many of the people I follow link to. Mostlyuse it to follow local news, sports, weather, a few national pundits, and a couple of politicians I trust (which is a very, very small number). It's also good for breaking news. fb is good for birthday notifications and that's about it. I've turned off notifications from all 'friends' (enough with the political memes and kid pics) and only get notifications from a few local theaters for special events and concert updates. Tried Snapchat, didn't see the point and never had an instagram account.

Had Snapchat for a while, but never used it myself. I received stuff, but I ultimately didn't bother to install it again on my most recent phone (about half a year ago).

I never bothered using Instagram (I have an unused account) and don't even know what Grizzle is.

I do use Facebook and Twitter very frequently, though. The former mostly for personal stuff and the latter for gathering all kinds of information.

Facebook was fun when I was younger but now it's so boring, and the videos you find on there are very distasteful. Instagram I used to be really into it, but now it became more like a celebrity outlet more than anything, I do like to check it a couple of times a month. I love twitter, like you said, it's great for figuring out what is going on in the world, and also, I feel like it's the most entertaining. Every time I go into twitter I know I'm going to have a laugh.

I have no social media. I pretty much had to create a Facebook account for my research last year to recruit prospective participants, but I immediately deactivated it after it was no longer necessary. I had Facebook when I was younger, but I found it to be, in my experience, a strange form of exhibitionism and I still see that now when I speak to others about it. Some people use it to endlessly compare themselves to others, falling into this distorted reality of social media where the life you depict is apparently the true life you live. The amount of times I have seen abusive relationships in real life being portrayed the as the happiest on Facebook is astonishing. I suspect those who gravitate towards needing to 'prove' their life to others on social media are those who are in desperate need for validation, approval and status. Some of it is narcissism, but a lot of it is also insecurities.

I also think, on an ideological level, that it is a rather reprehensible platform of invasion and imposition - where people openly and overtly give away details about themselves to large, multinational corporations and institutions of the state. I mean, think about it - you are telling God knows who how old you are, where you work, where you have worked, where you live, where you have lived, who your family is, who your partner is, who you have dated before, what your hobbies are, what your interests are, what school you attended, what university you attended, who you are friends with, what you are doing on the weekend, what you are doing today, and so on. Now, I understand not everyone uses Facebook to this excessive, invasive extent, but this type of data - on a larger, transnational level, across multiple languages, age groups and cultures - is valuable and also very telling to anyone who wants to understand more about a population.

Then again, I can still easily acknowledge that Facebook is a bastion of important activism, networking, interaction and education, but I feel these advantages are not strictly confined to the nature of the site, itself. I think a lot of this can still be achieved on the Internet, period.

In regards to Twitter, I sometimes go on it to see what particular people are saying. but I do not use it personally. I feel It has changed the way we engage in discourse to a degree, too. Things need to be punchy, concise, hard-hitting and very detailed, often without room for much explanation. Again, I understand the massive utility in this, but there are also implications in terms of how we are reducing and dogmatising certain discursive topics and subjects that really need a platform beyond Twitter to communicate soundly about.

In my view, I espouse communicative action. I feel that intrinsic to the nature of language and communication is this inherent orientation towards mutual understanding and consensus. Social media, on one hand, can facilitate this, but it can also severely damage it because you only have a certain amount of words to use before you either a) run out or b) lose the interest of a casual reader. As a result, consequential topics and ideas may be overlooked, under-represented or dogmatically rendered. I fear this is going to continue to happen.

All of these other social media sites that you have listed are foreign to me.

I draw the line at MoFo and eBay.

I joined Facebook once (didn't put up any public contact info). Next day my phone started ringing incessantly with spam calls, hang-up calls and sales calls.

Then my computer e-mail started to fill with spam and messages with dead-end links, all this stuff I never saw before. After 3 days, computer started acting really wacky (ran all the anti-virus stuff, and it just go worse). Took it to a local repair place, they charged $25 to tell me the hard drive was corrupted. I asked how much to fix - they said, "We no fix - you fix - order part online - very difficult if not know what you doing!"
I pointed to all their signs that said they repair all kinds of computers.
They said, "Yes, all kind, every kind we fix, anything, nothing too hard, no computer to difficult."
So I said, "Then why can't you fix mine?"
They said, "This hard drive problem, not computer - you need new hard drive."
I asked, "Isn't the hard drive the major part of the computer - and you claim to fix all computers, but you can't fix mine because it's the hard drive - which is basically what makes a computer function?"
They said, "Now you got it! We fix computer - every kind; laptop, desktop, smartphone, inside, outside - no problem too hard; you problem not computer, you problem hard drive."

So I had my friend who was a computer expert order a new harddrive and he installed it for me. Got it home, within one minute it began crashing just as it had before. The computer was totalled and beyond repair. Had to buy a brand new one - this all happened in immediate sequence after joining Facebook. Make of it what you will.
