your drift is continental sparky. It takes everything else with it. Hey, maybe the Matrix ripped off highlander too, and that cartoon about a giant iron man? ;)

Um, have you got any stronger reasons for thinking that? Matrix is, of course, like a copy of many films in that...it's an action film. And it's sci-fi. That, and a techno-caution/fear strand is about all it and the terminator series have got in common i reckon.

See Beale's "Dark city strangers vs the matrix agents" thread - that's something the matrix really did "copy"

My favorite thing the Matrix copied has always been Dark City. The Matrix got nearly all of its plot from this movie (not Reloaded, just the first one).

There are plenty of movies that the Matrix actually took things from, (another being Ghost in a Shell), but outside of those films.....The bottem line is that I don't think Terminator had any effect, or maybe very very little, on the Matrix.

The Matrix is also eerily similar to a comic book called The Invisibles by a british writer named Grant Morrison. Morrison actually threatened to sue over the similarities. The Invisibles is about a group of people trying to alert the world about a vast conspiracy that they're completely unaware is all around them. It's brilliant, has very much an anarchist viewpoint, sometimes confusing, and they ended up publishing a book that explains a lot of it. The story was so dense. It's a must read, and way better than Matrix Reloaded!

I'll be sure to check it out!

The idea about robots taking over seems like a huge part in both the stories though..

Right....but that is such a broad thing to directly connect two films together. ;)

My point was while the Matrix and Terminator films may be similarly themed, there are some definate films that the Matrix stole definate things from. It would be much more reasonable to point out a connection between Dark City and the Matrix than it would be The Terminator and the Matrix. It is all good though. :D

Have you seen Dark City Tuna?

Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes) may be mentioned here as the film which briefly tinkers with "living an alternative life while you're actually asleep" idea which is exploited in Matrix.

Welly, welly, welly, welly, welly, welly, well.

The Strangers probably enjoy the old ultraviolence more than the agents. Except for old Smith. He is real horrorshow.

Viddy well.

A very good point.

Dark City and The Matrix came out only a few months between each other, but since nobody saw Dark City, it went away pretty quickly, only to be rediscovered on video, so there isn't much of a case of one stealing from the other. I thought the Matrix stole from Dark City as well, so I'm not innocent of it either.

More like a year, but thats close to right...

(I do, however, believe that Dark City was developed as a script a long time before either were made into movies)

go to the User CP choice at the top. The signature is one of the choices, and the avatar thing is in the options somewhere. (weirdly, i feel greener after about these things. You'll see why soon enough ;))

Yeah i have and i see the connection of themes but (not saying that you did) i dont think its fair to call The Matrix a "copycat" or thief (in regard to dark city) because The Matrix adds the whole dimension of computers, and programs.

Dark City also may have taken ideas from dystopian novels like 1984 and added an alien aspect but is original (on some level) with the manipulation of the humans and creating false memories (this seems like something from another movie..) Well I don't want to end this post with the saying that no ideas are original, everything borrows from something else etc etc. so...uhh

Happy Thanksgiving..

Regardless of how much stuff they add on top of the plot, the plot is still centered around Dark City. I wouldn't call it a remake, but it certainly does take from other movies. (The same difference goes for Res. Dogs, in which QT took the majority of the plot from a movie called City on Fire. Is Reservoir Dogs a remake? No. Does Reservoir Dogs take the majority of its plot froim something else? Yes.)
