View Full Version : MoFo Fantasy Baseball 2017 - The Regular Season
Starts Sunday! !!!!!
I had a dream that we were already watching the first day of games, and Bryce Harper had three home runs, and the stattracker literally just said "big three" for him.
So yeah. Having weird baseball dreams = it's almost time for baseball.

Almost!
Because my Thursday softball game got rained out, Sunday is the start of baseball and softball.

Tongo's Rays love soars to new heights after this Opening Day,
I'm pretty sure he can't read this anyways ha
Rough first day for the Angels!
Rough first day for the Angels!
Rankings wont matter till were a few weeks in. I was happy to see Longo & Contreras hitting a couple bombs, and my pitchers did well....until the Closer for St Louis got rocked and wrecked my era & whip for the day. Dern it.
But, Tongo, my season is over! ;)
Welp, Jon Gray was absolutely cruising before giving up four in the 5th. Still, pretty encouraged. He was a big breakout candidate this year and the way he was missing bats the first few innings makes me feel fairly confident he'll be a steal.

With you on Gray. I put in a waiver claim for him in my other league and was worried that somebody would claim him based on how good he started the game yesterday. His five run fifth was a strategic meltdown to ensure that I get him in the end.

I love the first couple of days when everything swings so much; I gained 27.5 points! By the end of August, I'll be happy to pick up 0.5 pts in a day.

What is this weird scheduling they do at the start of the season now? So everyone gets a game and then a day off right after? Are they sleepy after that long 3 hours of sitting and standing around during the game? It's stupid and I don't like it.
I don't, either. But I guess the old way was to just start Monday, so it's actually more like we get some of the normal Monday games early on Sunday, instead? I guess?

And this year its stunted. There was 3 on Sunday and now the teams that played yesterday are getting a day off today as well. Bizarre.
I feel the same about the weird schedule. What gives?

Always play your Pirates, always. The pain is great when they earn large on your bench. This is a numbers game, but dang, games are meant to be fun. ;)

It took me a bit to figure out the Yahoo app but now that I have I find it works really well too. I even used it to draft a couple teams last year.
It's definitely gotten much better the last couple of years, too.
That feeling when the guy you just traded for goes yard on his first day on your team....

That feeling when the guy you just traded for goes yard on his first day on your team....

That feeling when Alex Cobb has a 1.59 ERA, a 0.88 Whip, 4 Ks, and is pulled in 5.2 innings screwing him out of the Quality Start.
:mad::sick::rolleyes::down::confused::scream::furiousdevil::facepalm:
That thing where, because it's the beginning of the season, you have to bench good players because you're still seeing what shakes out.
Tempting to try to shop some of the hitters around, but if as many work out as I suspect will, whatever's lost on the bench should be made up for later.

I got a bunch of good players on my bench too. They all got hurt like, 3 minutes before the season started.

That's how you win, fellas.
If the idea is just to accumulate first round picks, it's not hard: you just have to give up a ton of depth. Which means you have to have a ton of depth. Which means you have to nab a lot of valuable guys in the middle and late rounds of the draft.

Yeah, that closer thing is definitely weird.
Bad starts are particularly annoying because they make you want to take action, but since it means players are underperforming, it makes them a little harder to trade at a fair value, so they usually just have to be waited out.

Well, Felix for Keuchel is close to a wash at this point. Oh's struggling early and Holland looks terrific (and has the track record to suggest it's real). Which leaves Stanton and Gonzalez for Rizzo, who's also off to a slow start.
I think Rizzo will be fine, and Oh probably will be (less track record, though), but that's a lot of depth going out the door, and a lot of risk on the other end. I like taking those kinds of risks, but they don't always work out.

Sorry PW, but Im of Seds & Lems mindset. When I saw the offer I couldnt believe how much talent I was getting. My HR totals will even be stronger with Stanton & Agon. As for Felix, who gives a crap. Yall know how I play, and I refuse to start or keep a player that just doesnt get it done. I trhink Ill sit Felix as Joe Ross will be returning soon, and Ive 7 SPs at this point. I only need 6.
I told Yoda in PM, but this trade is a little Freaky Friday as he was the one coming in heavy with the offer, a Tongo trait if there ever was one.
Btw everyone, I already mailed the $200 to Sean. Breath easy as the prize money is being held by a sounder mind than mine.

That second Stanton homer was the kind only he hits, too: that ridiculous liner that leaves the yard in about a second and a half.

Well, I'll never get Stanton now. :(
Regarding which pitcher I will bench with Joe Ross returning, it most likely will be Jeff Samardzija. Hes struggled even more than Felix so far. His K count is good though.
Nelson Cruz, will you puh-leeze wake the (F word) up.
....and so thru a trade, Ive an intriguing duo in my Outfield - Marcell Ozuna & Giancarlo Stanton,
Im curious who will end up finishing ahead of who, as Ozuna had the hottest start for this season so far, in all the majors.

Oh boy, Yoda isn't going to like me making light of that situation.
I didn't even know until Adam texted me. Absolutely brutal, both for Adam and for the Pirates, and obviously both of us as fans.
What a mess.
Ouch! Dee Gordon last year and now Marte this one. For a second there I thought it was Cutch.
80 games? Thats a first offense suspension? Ouch.
I know when Tongo mentioned what he wanted to do for the league this year a lot of us had the same reaction. :confusedwhite: So when he said he was sending it to me I went back and forth with him a couple times. Ultimately I think Tongo is just being super generous and far be it from me to rob someone of that. So as per Tongo"s generous wishes here is what we are playing for this season. Just to explain myself and why I wanted to make a $200 sweetener. It wasnt to "glorify" myself or try to buy praise. I actually couldnt figure out why I was doing it when I was, but now it just came to me. Because of a tough time currently, I really wanted this fantasy baseball season be something special. Hopefully one that would be talked about later. Its always better when theres alot of buzz going on a game or event. Such things are priceless really, so I think it was worth it. :)
If I could win it back, then that would be really boss. :yup: If I dont though I hope Mark wins it. He's beyond "due".
Anyone ever run into "Yahoo is in Read-Only mode" while trying to add players? I was trying to add Rosenthal after the reset but was getting that error.
No, but I'm guessing that was related to the reset; it probably goes into read-only mode while it's happening.
What time was this?
I was up 20 minutes later, and all the players were still listed as on Waivers then, and still were around 5:15.
Actually, looking at FB messages with Lem, it was more like 3:50 am.
Ah. Well, I dunno when the reset was, but it was definitely some time after 5:15.
Doing waiver claims at 430? Good God, I'm never going to win this league.
 It's not as extreme as it sounds, at least not in my case. Most nights I wake up between 3-5 briefly and just use the bathroom or let the dog out. I just happened to remember to check the waiver wire this time.
I think I've literally only set an alarm to get up early for this once before, and that was for one of the MoFo Bowls (III, I believe).

You cut Felix?! You traded for him 8 days ago. Why on earth couldn't you go into "wait and see" mode with him? That trade looks really bad now if you just imagine that you didn't get Felix in it.
In 2 starts for your team he accrued: 13.2 IP, 3.29 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 8 K, 1 QS
That's certainly not old King Felix, but it's fine. It's good. It's rosterable. It's more valuable than the 7th inning guy on a bad team.
11 teams put in a Felix claim

hmph!
2 starts was enough for me, and possible stronger replacement SPs arent avialable forever on waivers. If Felix works out for whoever of the 11 gets him, then good for them. Its early to get riled up about where we are on the leaderboard, but it cant be ignored altogether either. Basically I need points now so I dont get left too far behind. Tongo knows. Tongo wise.
Gotta love it when your two starters combine for nine scoreless innings to start their games, and neither records a QS. Second time that's happened (with two on the same night) already this year, 'cept last time it was 10.

Eric Thames delivered his 11th homer Tuesday off the Reds' Robert Stephenson.
Advice: Eight of those homers have come versus Cincinnati pitching. Thames also worked his 14th walk in 20 games tonight before telling reporters after the game that he's got "plenty of urine and blood" to go around for MLB's drug testers. He has been tested three times since spring training, including a blood and urine test Tuesday. The guy is for real.

Aw, man. This bit from Gift Ngoepe (http://deadspin.com/a-conversation-with-gift-ngoepe-your-new-favorite-base-1794721065), first African-born player in the Major Leagues:
Basically in the dugout they told me that I was going into the game and I was like, okay Gift, the time as come. I went out to the [field] and [Francisco] Cervelli was like, “Come here.” And I’m like, “Okay.” I’m like, “I just got on the field.” And he just put his hand on my chest and listened to my heartbeat and I felt my heartbeat beating against his hand. And I’m like, oh this is not good. I’ve had this feeling before and it’s not good when I do this. I’ve got to calm down. And Cervelli told Jay Hay, “Hey you gotta listen to this. This is what we live for.” And then Jay Hay felt my heartbeat too and was like, “Hey, we’ve all been there. Just relax and do your thing.” And that kind of calmed me down.
Baseball, you guys. Baseball.
Hey, i know this is the hardcore betting corner of Baseball on MoFo so be gentle with me a normal dude who is really into pitching
Well, i've started watching baseball alot, alot for me isn't the same as alot for you guys as i'm from the UK and we don't ever get baseball on TV. So 4 Innings a week is pretty hardcore.
Anyway, i watched the first 2 innings of a Nationals game and they ended up 7-0 up. I mentioned to Yoda (Chris) that i don't really know the game outside of the stars: my comment was about Trout vs Harper. Whatever, is 7-0 in 2 innings normal?
For the record i definitely support the Dodgers for multiple reasons.

Seven is quite a few runs for a team.in an entire game. Not uncommon but a bunch.
Seven is quite a few runs for a team.in an entire game. Not uncommon but a bunch.
Both of the runs were purely due to Bryce. The first one had a dude on 1st Base and Bryce hit a single but forced that dude to run an extra base because he didn't stop, meaning Bryce ended up on second and the guy in front of him was on third. Later in the game there was another single while Bryce was on a double but he kept on running and made the run.
Dunno, it was awesome. I think Bryce is much better to watch than Trout at least.

The point was made that Trout has a suspect arm. Think Harper is objectively a five-tool player, there's nothing that you can object to with Bryce at least.
Who cares anyway the best player to watch is always going to be Clayton Kershaw which is why i'm a Dodgers fan. I watched a Dodgers-Giants game the other day and was baffled at how bad Kershaw was until i noticed that while he was batting the pitcher deliberately threw a fastball off his thigh: he limped away after it. Was so satisfying seeing him lose it after being treated like crap there and easily striking all of those bums out: especially Buster Posey who really expected to get at least a hit being a right handed batter: lol, got treated like a child.
Kershaw not doing well was actually a thing even though it shouldn't be because it's really ridiculous.
My favourite thing about Kershaw is that he never deliberately walks anyone ever. He walked someone in the last game i saw of him and you could tell it pissed him right off, it hints towards him not wanting to deal with said batter whether he did or not and the idea of that clearly kills him. Look at walks stats of any of the other great pitchers and it's not even close, you are lucky if Kershaw gives five walks a season and if he does he's never happy about it.
Best player ever. Also most hilariously bad pitcher-batter.
I actually haven't watched Kershaw pitch as much as I would like. He is exactly the kind of pitcher I love though, might get to see him more this year if I get back in the habit of watching the ESPN games, which I already have a bit this month.

He's the only reason i watch baseball. Dunno if it is common or not but he usually looks at his First Baseman before throwing his pitch. I mean he never ever looks at the batter before making his pitch.
I've not watched baseball as much as you guys but 90% of the baseball i've watched has been Kershaw pitching.

I've always wanted to talk to you guys but i wasn't sure if this was the general baseball discussion thread or if it was the fantasy baseball lounge. Yoda said it is the former but i don't agree coz it's only 6 pages in.
Whatever, long live Kershaw
Watching a Dodgers game right now and it's reminding me of several other reasons why i love Kershaw. The main one is that he always goes for the strike: every other pitcher throws deliberate balls and whatever to strategically throw the batter off, Kershaw is the only pitcher i've seen that threatens the batter on similar grounds. By that i mean a batter like say Mike Trout is always a threat whenever he goes to bat: Kershaw's pitches are just as much if not a much bigger threat than his big hits though as Kershaw never has any intention of holding back or being scared of a batter, and even against Mike Trout i've never seen anyone have any sort of consistency against his pitches. i've actually seen teams alternate their batting order because he's pitching, give our best batter more at-bats tomorrow when it's not against Kershaw.
The only thing i don't like about Kershaw is the team celebrating his individual records: seems to be circled around him and i'd much rather the team win a WS than stroke the dudes ego. Celebrating his 300th Strikeout or whatever it was was really stupid for a team that feels so far away from a championship: dude's the king we all love him but lets not glorify a single person in a sport that needs everyone to work together.
Yah, pretty sure i don't agree with myself there. Kershaw is probably my favourite sportsman

Stats are a huge deal in baseball, get used to it. It seems silly at times to me too...but I also kind of like it.
I don't think the forum will ever have enough baseball talk that we need a separate thread. Besides fantasy talk is essentially just talking about the game. We already have another thread for trade stuff.

Yeah I agree with Sean man, stay and talk as much baseball as you want :). Clayton Kershaw is the best baseball player of our generation, Ive said that before. Better and more consistent than Trout, Harper, or even if Thames #'s hold up over time. Ive only seen him pitch a couple times (against my poor Rays), and he just seems so relaxed and fluid compared to other pitchers. That relaxed flow imo is what can enables a pitcher to throw 9 innings vs 6 ip, not tensing up has everything to do with it.

I agree with everything you said, but is this fair to say? Trout and Harper have to play like 3 times as much as Kershaw. I'd love to call Kershaw the best but i don't feel right doing so when he doesn't play as much. I think that's probably why pitchers shouldn't be compared to others. My main problem with this is that sometimes i'll watch a Dodgers game and Kershaw isn't pitching

Oy! Well I lost Thor for at least 2 months. That hurts. I would start shopping Kyle Seager more aggresively for a pitcher, but now Longo is having foot troubles....sooo I cant. Gonzo isnt slumping, more like playing very mediocre. To quote Rocky "Yo Adrian! Get your @#^& together!"

That's a cool site, but how many times did you have to run it before the Braves won? I ran it twice, (with the same pitchers), and the Mets won both times. (7-5 in the first game, and 2-0 in the second game.) The only difference was that I made the Mets the home team.

I'm guessing nobody other than me and Adam noticed that Conforto is 16th on the player rater. And that doesn't even factor in OBP, or he'd be higher.

Mariano River threw a pitch pretty similar to that most of his career. His was so snappy he used to break quite a few bats. I wonder if that's a stat. I bet he'd be in the top 5. Randy Johnson who's breaking ball used to be called "Mr. Snappy" had the most devastating drop I've ever seen. It was Un-hittable.
This isn't a great angle of it. But it was pretty crazy. I know he struck out 16 Pirates one day, so perhaps you actually got to see it a little live at some point, Chris?

Greatest pitch in Mariners history, quickly followed by one of Niehaus's silliest lines as a commentator. Still though, you can sort of see why his was crazy hard to hit. His delivery was nuts. The pitch started at least three feet off the plate and would bend down and invariably end up just above your shoes. Crazy stuff.

I sense a narrative forming just in case winning doesn't happen. Here's hoping Admin never becomes an elected position. You got the game plan down cold.
Trout might have hurt his thumb stealing a base. I'll get the ol' bleach cocktail ready just in case.
^time to chug. Trout out for two months. Brutal. Particularly after just trading two OFs.
Sad for baseball in general, too: not just because he's Mike Trout, but because he was having a career season. Decent shot at 50 homers, and a third MVP award.
I'd be sad even if he wasn't on my team. He's such a special player.
I'd be sad even if he wasn't on my team. He's such a special player.
Yeah, I'm totally with you. I never like to see the greats go down for significant periods even if I mostly root against their team. Hopefully this is a very small hiccup in an amazing career. Two months isn't insignificant though. That's a chunk.

Do you need another first rounder on your team Yoda? Cabrera was wondering.
It would help if he had OF eligibility, but I'm always open to a good value.
It'd be pretty hilarious if I went from pitching-starved to dealing it for hitting over the course of just three weeks, but that might be where I am. I've got 7 good-to-great starters and Jon Gray on the way back.
Baseball is weird.
That said, certainly willing to move Trout for the right deal. Obviously a little tricky to value someone like this, where you get nothing for awhile, and then suddenly the best player in fantasy, but if somebody's thinking of going all-in on a dramatic second-half push, he fits the bill.
rauldc14
05-31-17, 07:45 PM
I have 1B and OF available.
Bad: benching Sean Manaea because, while he has great stuff, he's had trouble with pitch counts, and Cleveland is patient.
Good: Manaea dominates them, so at least you know not to bench him any more.
Never sure what to root for when you sit someone...
Daniel Murphy says goodbye to the Ducks with a four-hit night. As always, whatever a player does while a trade is pending ends up being bittersweet.
Gotta admit, I wasn't sure how much I bought into the Murphy resurgence (especially at this time last year), but he's made fundamental adjustments and become an elite player late in his career. Was definitely on the fence about taking him as early as I did, but it sure worked out. Best of luck with him, Rob. Expect he'll keep racking up the counting stats in that ridiculous lineup.
I do like seeing all these guys like Murphy and Alonso find success with these swing plane adjustments and the like. Baseball's more fun when that's possible, instead of just seeing players always follow a normal aging curve.
Also, because I can't get enough of filthy breaking balls:
https://twitter.com/PitchingNinja/status/870434019372142596
What a season so far....
Going into it I looked to have the greatest of pitching lineups after the draft, and then fell on my face in those supposed stocked SP categories. Then I traded away 2 incredible closers for some ho-hummers which ended up outperforming them. I grab Altuve & had Ellsbury, then the net result is Im last place in stolen bases.
The weirdness doesnt end with me. Nostro saunters into the FBB league and actually has been delivering on his proclamation that he'd win the league his first year, being the most consistent team in the #1 slot. Mark & Yoda have made appearances.
I havent made the nauseating amount of moves or trades like usual, but have made a fair share. Hopefully I will stay away from that dreaded 12th place slot which Ive frequented more often than not. Right now have 4 Rays in my lineup, but hey, some things never change ;)
Hell of a week, Ducks. You've earned this:

There's no magic trick: you just have to have what people need. And in roto baseball, a lot of them need depth, especially this year with the entire league racked by injuries. In roto, there'll always be trade opportunities for people who have depth, so if you're smart, you work disproportionately at nailing the middle and late rounds of the draft (and the waiver wire).
This is a fickle game. When you look at the legitimate stats and not the rankings, my team isn't far off from the Ducks. But I'm almost 30 points behind

Okay, I guess that last part's kinda suss.

Just trying to keep things fair.
Even though he's not a Duck any more, I still can't resist posting GIFs of Jose Berrios' breaking ball:

He should have thrown one of those here eh?

Anthony Rizzo's batting lead off. Huh.
Feel like this is Joe Maddon doing his usual counterintuitive overthinking Joe Maddon thing...but in this case, it happens to make sense anyway.

I pick up my second Mariner of the year and he immediately goes on the day to day list. Cut his ass.Oh Mariners? What has become of thee?

June 26th - Rich Hill throws his first QS of the season (7 IP, 3 ER) against the lowly, Trout-less Angels. My extreme patience is paying dividends.

More on this:
It's a measurement of how fast every player runs at their peak speed (how much ground they cover at their fastest second of a sprint). So it's not speed to first, but rather "speed once fully accelerated." They have the 2015–17 data on the site.
So the fastest players at every position in 2017 are:
DH - Corey Dickerson
C - TJ Realmuto
1B - Wil Myers
2B - Dee Gordon
SS - Trea Turner
3B - Kris Bryant
LF - Delino DeShields
CF - Billy Hamilton [unsurprisingly, he's the fastest sprinter in 2017 (but not 2015-16, that's Buxton)]
RF - Daniel Robertson
More interesting (to me) is the slowest lineup:
DH - Albert Pujols (who is the slowest sprinter in all of baseball this year)
C - Brian McCann
1B - Justin Smoak
2B - Robinson Cano
SS - Troy Tulowitzki
3B - Adrian Beltre
LF - Matt Kemp
CF - Curtis Granderson
RF - Jose Bautista

So that's how you move up 10 points without doing anything. I like that. :yup:
I assume you're all getting the erroneous "no more positional innings available" error with your lineups that I am. I saw someone reporting it to Yahoo on Twitter and I did the same, so I think it's happening everywhere. I assume it'll be fixed before any of today's games start.

At first I thought that's why I was actually over 80 points this year
Played it safe and didn't start him last night, but all the same, welcome back, Jon Gray:

You have reached the maximum of games for position Util. Stats from players in this position will not be used for the remainder of the season.
So I was startled, hopefully theyll get it sorted

3 guys in the 100's? Geez man. Has that happened before?
I'm sure it has, though I guess you probably mean more "has that happened except for early in the year?" If so...maybe not. But then, it probably would have if we'd been playing with 12 categories rather than 10 in the early years.

Nah, I just wondered if it had happened at all. Pretty crazy.
