Sad Songs Song Tournament
http://www.movieforums.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=29301&stc=1&d=1489048369
What makes a song a "sad song"? That's something for each of you to decide for yourself, but if you think it's a sad song, then it's eligible for this tournament. If it makes you tear up, that's great. If it makes you cry like a baby, that's even better.
http://www.movieforums.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=29299&stc=1&d=1489039477
Please Note: There have been a lot of drop-outs from these tournaments recently, so if you're not planning to vote throughout the entire tournament, you're welcome to comment and join the discussion, but please don't join the tournament just to drop out later. It affects the flow of the tournament, and upsets the host.
Plus, due to the fact that it's unfair to the other members of the tournament, the new rule is that if you drop out, your songs will automatically be eliminated, and if necessary, whatever songs they're up against will get a free pass to the next round.
Rules:
All genres are eligible, with no limitations on genre, but the theme is Sad Songs, as listed above. In addition, songs that are previous tournament winners and songs that are over 10 minutes long are NOT eligible.
I think it's safe to assume that everyone will be able to nominate at least eight songs, so you can start posting your nominations as soon as you join the tournament. Please keep your nominations in one post. You can edit your nominations up until the time the nominations close, but please make a new post to let everyone know that your nominations have changed.
Any song is allowed as long as you can provide a link to it. Everyone uses YouTube, but you can also link from other sites if you prefer, as long as they don't require anyone to sign up for the site to listen to the song.
To be fair to everyone, you must listen to both songs to vote. You must vote from the beginning of the tournament to continue voting throughout the tournament. Unless a tie-breaking vote is requested, anyone who hasn't voted consistently will not be allowed to vote in the final rounds.
If you have any questions, please ask.

I added the nominations into the first post, but you can still make changes until the tournament starts. Just let me know if you change anything, and I'll update the first post.
This tournament won't start until the current "Decades" tournament ends, so you still have plenty of time to think about your nominations.

I'll join. I'll dwell on some songs today. I have to leave here in roughly 2 hours, and I haven't even slept yet. I am tired, man. That should make me poohy enough for sad songs. :p

Thought I'd best mention it just in case as you do have the full criteria listed. I let both Starless and reso's Night Of The Assassins in the Decades tourney because it was totally my fault that I omitted to mention the usual time-limit in the 'boring stuff'. Sorry for creating any confusion Lil Dev.

Nestorio_Miklos
How to make hyperlinks:
1. Copy the url of the link you want
2. Type the text of the song or whatever in a response ... i.e. Clive Dunn - Grandad
3. Highlight the text
4. In the list of optional actions at the top of the response box (where italics, bold, underline etc. is click the picture of a globe with 2 links of a chain underneath it
5. In the box that comes up paste the url you copied earlier (as long as you don't click in the box this should automatically replace the "http://" already there)
6. Edit the "www" in the link to "m"
7. Click ok and it will wrap the HTML for the link around the text and that's it
Repeat that for each one you want to do.
You can verify they look ok and even that they work by previewing the post.
For example here's the one for Clive Dunn - Grandad (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6KJGJRd8pGE)
You have a total of eight nominations if you wish (thus far) btw ;)

Ðèstîñy posted instructions (with screenshots) about how to make the links. Here's the link to her post:
http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=1630873#post1630873
Basically, you just have to change the "www" part of the YouTube link to the letter "m", and then link it to the song title and artist.
You can post 8 songs now, and based on how many people join, we'll see if we need to add some more songs in the next few days.

So, after you post your songs, what happens next? How does the voting system work? Sorry, I'm new at this. I read the first page about the rules and "not dropping out" but not sure what that means.

It's a knockout competition ... songs will be matched randomly against each other and participants will vote on which song they prefer each time (most commonly 8 matches per day) .... the song with the most votes in each match go through to the next round.

Chypmunk answered your question correctly. The songs are randomly matched up in pairs, and you listen to both songs, and vote on the song you like better. The winner of each match goes on to the next round. This continues until we have a winning song.
There are usually eight (8) matches per set, and you have 24 hours to vote in each set. If you need a little bit more time, just let me know and I can keep the set open a little longer if necessary.
The "not dropping out" part means that if you join the tournament, you're agreeing to vote in each round until the tournament is over. Even if all of your songs are eliminated before the end of the tournament, you can continue voting.
If you want to join, just post your nominations here in the thread. If you have any questions let me know. :)

Come on Sarge you can do it! Don't lose heart there's so many sad 'uns out there. We do have a rule that if a song has won a tournament it doesn't get nominated again as it's already reached it's highest pinnacle.

Not sure that's necessary - I normally just link to the latest complete one in the blurb at the start of a tourney so people can use it for reference if needed. Problem with a sticky is only either the person that created it or a mod can update it.

We're at 10 players right now. I have to double-check that all the links work here in the U.S., and I think we're only waiting for your other 7 noms, then I can see if we need to add more songs to make this a standard 128 song tournament.

We'll probably start on Tuesday. I'm waiting for Ðèstîñy's nominations, and if nobody else joins, we might add a few more songs per person.
A "normal" song tournament is usually 128 songs, and right now we have 10 people who joined, so that's only 80 songs total. If each person wants to add 4 more songs, and 8 people will each get 1 more bonus nomination (5 more noms for those people), we can bring the total up to 128 songs total.
Do you guys want to each add 4 or 5 more songs each, or do you just want to go with the 80 songs that we will have once Ðèstîñy's nominations are added?

If it's too late for MoJo, give him my extra five noms. Who are we kidding, they'll be close to what I'd choose, anyways, and I feel sure I'll love them. ;)
p.s. Our Meatloaf songs got kicked already, in the 10 Plus Tournament.
I'll get my seven other songs up tonight.

We have all the nominations, and we're just waiting for Sarge to okay an alternate link, and then we can start the tournament.
We're expecting a blizzard here within the next few hours, and it already started to snow, so I'll wait a little while longer for his response on the alternate link, but I'm going to try to get the first set posted before I sign off tonight just in case we lose power tomorrow. If we don't get a reply from Sarge on the alternate link, we'll start with the link that I posted above, but I'll change it if he prefers a different link.

For those of you who haven't joined one of these song tournaments before, all you have to do is listen to both songs in each match, and bold the song that you like more. (Ignore the numbers in front of the song titles. That's just for me to make sure that your songs don't go up against another one of your songs.)
Each set will be open for about 24 hours, but if you need a little bit more time, just let me know and I can hold the set open a bit longer if necessary.

ROUND 1 - DAY 1:
5 - Tool - Pushit vs. 11 - Third Eye Blind - How's It Going to Be
4 - Michael Johnson ~ Bluer than Blue vs. 9 - Three Days Grace - Fallen Angel
1 - Japan - Nightporter vs. 7 - This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren- this was a very hard choice, twice I've changed my mind and relistened again. Nightporter is so beautiful, that piano is haunting, but there's something very special about Song to the Siren. Such a shame they can't both go through. edit - changed my mind again, the piano is too good and too sad for me not to vote for it!
11 - Chicago - Hard Habit to Break vs. 2 - Portishead - Roads I love Portishead. Beth Gibbons' voice is so fragile.
10 - Linkin Park - Leave Out All The Rest vs. 1 - Chris Stapleton - Daddy Doesn't Pray Here Anymore I actually like the Linkin Park song too, but I love the spareness of the Chris Stapleton song, his voice and the little bit of wailing harmonica at the end was great
5 - Black Sabbath - Solitude [Cathedral cover version] vs. 7 - Elliott Smith - Christian Brothers
9 - Laleh - Some Die Young vs. 8 - The Smiths - There is a Light That Never Goes Out
10 - blink-182 - I Miss You vs. 9 - Lady Gaga - Til it Happens to You I wasn't expecting that. I've not seen/heard it before and found it really upsetting. Oh for a world where every single person believed that rape was an unacceptable behaviour.
5 - Tool - Pushit vs. 11 - Third Eye Blind - How's It Going to Be

Yeah sometimes it's dead easy, but sometimes it's sooo hard to chose ...and then sometimes you don't much like either! I really like song tourneys cos you have to listen to songs you've never heard before or genres you think you don't like only to discover something new that starts you off looking for more songs by the same group/singer.
It's also nice to add a few words about what you think about the songs, makes it more interesting, even if you only do it to a few.

ROUND 1 - DAY 1:
5 - Tool - Pushit vs. 11 - Third Eye Blind - How's It Going to Be - a lot of angst in a music about domestic violence.
4 - Michael Johnson ~ Bluer than Blue vs. 9 - Three Days Grace - Fallen Angel
Japan - Nightporter vs. This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren - oh GAWWWDD!!! that was hard. I'll give it to This Mortal Coil for proper haunting. [also "Lost Highway"]
Chicago - Hard Habit to Break vs. Portishead - Roads - I really never cared for Portishead [reminds me way too much of Massive Attack with the voice of Skunk Anansie]. But that E piano... and general melodic line. Quite a well composed tune.
Linkin Park - Leave Out All The Rest vs. Chris Stapleton - Daddy Doesn't Pray Here Anymore
Black Sabbath - Solitude [Cathedral cover version] vs. Elliott Smith - Christian Brothers - the original actually makes me laugh [Ozzy has that effect on me], this one is a million times more to point.
Laleh - Some Die Young vs. The Smiths - There is a Light That Never Goes Out
blink-182 - I Miss You vs. Lady Gaga - Til it Happens to You
Some great tunes around.

I've always deleted the song I didn't want. It's a lot easier that way, for the person running the thread. I believe so, anyways. Just copy/paste the person's list to notepad, and then the counting up of the results, is a lot easier. The bold doesn't show up on my notepad, and I haven't been able to get it to work on my wordpad in forever. Maybe it does for everyone else. I dunno.

ROUND 1 - DAY 1:
Tool - Pushit vs. Third Eye Blind - How's It Going to Be
Michael Johnson ~ Bluer than Blue vs. Three Days Grace - Fallen Angel
Japan - Nightporter vs. This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren
As much as I love Nightporter Ms. Fraser has been one of my favourite female vocalists for decades now so I'm voting against my own here
Chicago - Hard Habit to Break vs. Portishead - Roads
Love early Portishead until they totally lost me with 'Third'
Linkin Park - Leave Out All The Rest vs. Chris Stapleton - Daddy Doesn't Pray Here Anymore
Cathedral - Solitude vs. Elliott Smith - Christian Brothers
Laleh - Some Die Young vs. The Smiths - There is a Light That Never Goes Out
blink-182 - I Miss You vs.Lady Gaga - Til it Happens to You

It's cool, I generally hope to have them all done in or around 24 hours but with Chelters this week and the wife still at home it means I have to get up and listen in the early hours whilst she's still happily ensconced in the Land of Nod. I know how frustrating tardy voters can be for a host - I'll endeavour not to be one.
Any chance we can lose the numbers though please?

ROUND 1 - DAY 2:
Sum 41 - Pieces vs. Lissie - Here Before
Billy Ocean ~ There'll be Sad Songs vs. Collective Soul - The World I Know
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms vs. Mike and the Mechanics - The Living Years
Simple Plan - Untitled vs. Bruce Springsteen - Streets of Philadelphia
The Band Perry - If I Die Young vs. Oasis - I'm Outta Time
The Cranberries - Put Me Down vs. Bonny Prince Billy - I See a Darkness
A shame Dolores is up against Billy here, would've voted for Put Me Down against the majority of this set
Buddy Miller - I Can't Get Over You vs. Saint Asonia - Dying Slowly
Five Finger Death Punch - Wrong Side of Heaven vs. Pink Floyd The Fletcher Memorial Home
A vets matchup - random.org really does have a sense of devilment at times
Today was really tough. Some excellent songs up against each other. In at least a couple of instances I know that the video has had an enhancing affect on the song for me. Maybe I'll try listening with my eyes closed from now on.
ROUND 1 - DAY 2:
10 - Sum 41 - Pieces vs. 7 - Lissie - Here Before
Tough choice but I think I related more to Sum 41.
4 - Billy Ocean ~ There'll be Sad Songs vs. 11 - Collective Soul - The World I Know
Was surprised by this as I like the Billy Ocean song. This is probably one of the examples of when the video had an impact.
6 - Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms (Alternate Link for U.S.) vs. 8 - Mike and the Mechanics - The Living Years
Doubt I will have a tougher choice in the tournament. Brothers in arms is the song that most affected my Dad and was one of his favourite songs, and therefore reminds me of him. The living years however also makes me think of my Father. It is the only song in the world that I struggle to listen to because of the emotion it causes in me. I have to turn it off when it comes on the radio as it is like being repeatedly punched in the stomach.
10 - Simple Plan - Untitled vs. 5 - Bruce Springsteen - Streets of Philadelphia
Tough choice again. I think memories of the film that are attached to this song may have swung it. I did like Simple plan though.
9 - The Band Perry - If I Die Young vs. 8 - Oasis - I'm Outta Time
I love this song by Oasis, so there was no real contest here for me.
7 - The Cranberries - Put Me Down vs. 2 - Bonny Prince Billy - I See a Darkness
Two haunting songs and I could have chose either. BPB just edged it for me though.
1 - Buddy Miller - I Can't Get Over You vs. 10 - Saint Asonia - Dying Slowly
Another tough one, but this is a beautiful song by Buddy Miller. I downloaded it for my playlist after listening
9 - Five Finger Death Punch - Wrong Side of Heaven vs. 6 - Pink Floyd The Fletcher Memorial Home
The video definitely played a part in this. As the son of a soldier, when you start putting statistics and quotes up about how tough soldiers have it during and post service it will work. I know Fletcher has similar sentiments but the stats and the combat shots did for it.

Sarge, good to read your comments. I mostly listen to the songs while I'm working so don't watch the videos. I think it's better as I'd rather have my own interpretation of the lyrics.
I have some songs that affect me deeply too, I used to not be able to listen to them at all, but as the years have gone past I find they help remember good times rather than upset now. Hopefully you might find the same in time x

ROUND 1 - DAY 2:
Lissie - Here Before - The first seconds of her singing reminded me of "I just called to say I love you" lol. But it's a cool song.
Billy Ocean ~ There'll be Sad Songs vs. 11 - Collective Soul - The World I Know - hard to chose. One is about love, the other about self pity. Billy Ocean has some tunes I dig [Lover Boy... anyone remembers that one?] but I'll take Collective Soul this time.
6 - Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms (Alternate Link for U.S.) vs. 8 - Mike and the Mechanics - The Living Years - no contest
10 - Simple Plan - Untitled vs. 5 - Bruce Springsteen - Streets of Philadelphia - although Streets of Philadelphia is about AIDS, when I first heard the song [I only watched the movie quite some time afterwards] I thought it was about homelessness, hunger and loneliness . It isn't [they could well be though]. But damn, those lyrics are some powerful stuff [specially because Bruce sings them in a dragged/tired way]. To me [obviously] has all the stuff I appreciate in music composition and execution [and I'm not even a Bruce Springsteen fan at all]
9 - The Band Perry - If I Die Young vs. 8 - [B]Oasis - I'm Outta Time
7 - The Cranberries - Put Me Down vs. 2 - Bonny Prince Billy - I See a Darkness - I dunno if people are aware of this, but there are two versions of this song. This one and this one (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LAriDxTeed8). The first one [the one it was mentioned] is an upbeat happy go round of a much sadder and melancholic original version. And I much prefer the original version [a sad song with an upbeat feel may lose its purpose]
1 - Buddy Miller - I Can't Get Over You vs. 10 - Saint Asonia - Dying Slowly
9 - Five Finger Death Punch - Wrong Side of Heaven vs. 6 - Pink Floyd The Fletcher Memorial Home - whaaaaa? I didn't vote for Floyd? I must be ill or someffin'... nah, I don't care for "The Final Cut" album at all.

Not a bad idea. Thanks. It's just that one song. I just can't do it. Even thinking about it in my head is like a kick in the ribs.

yes, I know that version too and I deliberately didn't choose it. When I hear that upbeat one it's like a parody of the original - don't like it at all.

ROUND 1 - DAY 2:
10 - Sum 41 - Pieces vs. 7 - Lissie - Here Before
4 - Billy Ocean ~ There'll be Sad Songs vs. 11 - Collective Soul - The World I Know
6 - Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms (Alternate Link for U.S.) vs. 8 - Mike and the Mechanics - The Living Years - no contest on this pairing. Brothers In Arms means a lot to a lot of people
10 - Simple Plan - Untitled vs. 5 - Bruce Springsteen - Streets of Philadelphia Bruce is a genius. I'm such a fan in case you didn't know ;) This song touches me everytime as it reminds me of the first time I saw the film with my son then aged about 11 or 12, I glanced at him near the end of the film and saw tears sliding down his cheeks, the first time I ever saw a film affect him like that.
9 - The Band Perry - If I Die Young vs. 8 - Oasis - I'm Outta Time
7 - The Cranberries - Put Me Down vs. 2 - Bonny Prince Billy - I See a Darkness brings tears to my eyes every time I hear this. It's so mournful that I like listening to it when I feel sad.
1 - Buddy Miller - I Can't Get Over You vs. 10 - Saint Asonia - Dying Slowly - I Can't Get Over You is a great song, the harmonies are beautiful, a real pull on the ol' heartstrings
9 - Five Finger Death Punch - Wrong Side of Heaven vs. 6 - Pink Floyd The Fletcher Memorial Home

ROUND 1 - DAY 2:
10 - Sum 41 - Pieces vs. 7 - Lissie - Here Before too many good memories, I was there in Toronto when bands like Sum 41 or Avrile Lavigne where playing on every street corner, all kinds of public concerts, and they came out good :)
4 - Billy Ocean ~ There'll be Sad Songs vs. 11 - Collective Soul - The World I Know
6 - Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms (Alternate Link for U.S.) vs. 8 - Mike and the Mechanics - The Living Years its not because i nominated it, i used to play it a lot when some of my GFs dumped me :)
10 - Simple Plan - Untitled vs. 5 - Bruce Springsteen - Streets of Philadelphia not really a huge Springsteens fan however i like his style like Tunnel of Love album and of course Streets of Philadelphia:)
9 - The Band Perry - If I Die Young vs. 8 - Oasis - I'm Outta Time
7 - The Cranberries - Put Me Down vs. 2 - Bonny Prince Billy - I See a Darkness ive never heard of him and the guy definitely got something to say, definitely
1 - Buddy Miller - I Can't Get Over You vs. 10 - Saint Asonia - Dying Slowly
9 - Five Finger Death Punch - Wrong Side of Heaven vs. 6 - Pink Floyd The Fletcher Memorial Home i love Final Cut, its visceral,-- so underrated album
all great nominations and im sure all of you picked carefully but we need to choose :):):)👍👍👍

Skylar Grey - Words vs. Mark Chesnutt - I'll Think of Something

ROUND 1 - DAY 3:
Cesaria Evora - Sodade (Alternate Link for U.S.) vs. Tool - Sober - "saudade" is a very portuguese thing. Curiously enough, I don't care for Cesária Évora. "Sober", on the other hand is a more universal thing [Maynard's lyrics are poignant without embellishments. Works like a charm for the general mood of the composition]
James Ingram ~ Just Once vs. Regina Spektor - Ode to Divorce - didn't know the song and when I read the title I laughed out loud because there's a corny as all hell portuguese song about divorce that became so popular due to its excruciating lyrics [and singer]. This one - I'm happy to report - is a good song[although she tries a lot to sound like Bjork for some reason]
Skylar Grey - Words vs. Mark Chesnutt - I'll Think of Something - this was a hard one. I really like the lyrics of the first one but not the usual piano trope while I enjoyed the mood in the second one but not the lyrics. I think I'll go more with relateability in this case.
Lorraine Ellison - Stay With Me Baby vs. Gary Jules – Mad World - no contest [for me obviously]
System Of A Down - Lonely Day vs. Gilbert Bécaud - Nathalie
Electrelane - I Only Always Think (Alternate Link for Non-U.S.) vs. Kevin Sharp - Nobody Knows - damn... hard one for sure. Electrelane reminds me a lot of Radiohead, while the second one seems [imho] to be more in the typical line. I'll go wit Electrelane just because I prefer atypical approaches.
Oasis - Don't Go Away (Alternate Link for U.S.) vs. John Grant - Why Don't You Love Me Anymore - cool song overall.
Sia - Breathe Me (Alternate Link for U.S.) vs. Kris Kristofferson - Sunday Morning Coming Down - I have to confess I'm not really a "Folk" fan [is that folk or country?] but I really dig the lyrics. But is this the original or the one by Cash, or the one by Velvet Underground?

Hi Sarge just a little come back in defence of my songs and feel free to do the same any time you need to comment on yours too! I love reading why people like their songs, those bits where people comment are my favourite bits. I'm happy if people say why they love or hate my choices :)
If anyone feels that Sodade was sad even if they can't understand the lyrics then I feel it's a success! It's in the great fado tradition (I know she's from Cape Verde but it has great Portuguese influences being a former colony) . You'll hear another song of mine like this in this round (which will probably get kicked out too but at least I made people listen to it!) from possibly the greatest fado singer of all time - Amália Rodrigues. Fado is a traditional song form about longing, homesickness, sadness, melancholy, which I find fascinating in the way it can still move you without even understanding the lyrics. I've heard it sung in a back street bar in Lisbon in a room full of people with tears in their eyes.
I can see why people will vote for Mad World, it's such a great sad song about confusion growing up, I like it too. However Stay With Me Baby has always moved me, this mature woman is begging her lover not to leave, she's lost all pride you can hear all her pain in Ellison's voice, it's a great great song imo!

Kris Kristofferon wrote the song LD, I like his version, but also am a Cash fan too so also like his.

Absolutely agree Christine. I just like to understand what is being said/sung it's more of an issue with me :
People will have loyalty to songs. Like with me yesterday I love the song 'Brothers in arms' but find 'The Living years' 10000 times more moving but that is due to the personal connection. Same with Mad world. One of the first songs that I thought expressed how I was feeling at a certain time. Similarly with Oasis - A lot of their songs are the soundtrack to my life, particularly my youth when most of my sad days have been. This process can never be fully objective.
Opinions and all that. I think everyone should have the same opinion as me but I will fully defend their right not to :D

Sarge - yep agree with your right to disagree about the songs :D . Seriously tho it's true about objectivity. Music is an amazing thing, it can transport you back to moments in time in your life so it's def bound up in memories. The only songs we can truly assess is ones we've never heard before.

ROUND 1 - DAY 3:
Cesaria Evora - Sodade (Alternate Link for U.S.) vs. Tool - Sober - I like Tool, but I love Sodade
James Ingram ~ Just Once vs. Regina Spektor - Ode to Divorce
Skylar Grey - Words vs. Mark Chesnutt - I'll Think of Something
Lorraine Ellison - Stay With Me Baby vs. Gary Jules – Mad World - Stay With Me Baby is one of my favourite sad songs
System Of A Down - Lonely Day vs. Gilbert Bécaud - Nathalie - I like Lonely Day, but Nathalie is really quirky in a nice way
Electrelane - I Only Always Think (Alternate Link for Non-U.S.) vs. Kevin Sharp - Nobody Knows I like the Electrane song, but it just doesn't feel sad,
Oasis - Don't Go Away (Alternate Link for U.S.) vs. John Grant - Why Don't You Love Me Anymore
Sia - Breathe Me (Alternate Link for U.S.) vs. Kris Kristofferson - Sunday Morning Coming Down Maybe we've all felt this way one way or another, looking at seemingly happy or successful lives when you feel on the outside. A hauntingly lonely song

Yes, like I was commenting to SC, "sad songs" are very subjective in which they only work for the individual that relates to it. Relate-ability is a major component in musical tastes [in this case in particular, what makes one sad doesn't make the other due to personal experiences and/or taste]

Elton John - Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word vs. Dolly Parton - Jolene
Tough choice. Changed my mind more than a few times.
Bob Dylan - Knocking on Heaven's Door vs. Edith Piaf - Non, Je ne regrette rien
Another two iconic songs. Bob just edges it for me.
The Suede - The Wild Ones vs. Elton John - Candle in the Wind
Went for The Suede. If it was the 1997 Candle in the wind it may well be a different story.
Tool - Wings for Mary 1 vs. Imagine Dragons - Demons
First time I have heard this Imagine Dragons track. Loved it.
Devil Doll - It Was Raining vs. Pink Floyd - Don't Leave Me Now

Elton John - Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word vs. Dolly Parton - Jolene - Jolene is a popular song but I wonder if people listen and empathise with the character in the song, so much hurt :(
Bob Dylan - Knocking on Heaven's Door vs. Edith Piaf - Non, Je ne regrette rien Piaf is brilliant!
The Suede - The Wild Ones vs. Elton John - Candle in the Wind - I can't separate Candle in the Wind with the Diana version, reminds me of a time of deeply maudlin faux grief in this country for that poor girl
Tool - Wings for Mary 1 vs. Imagine Dragons - Demons

ROUND 1 - DAY 4:
so let's see a bit here:)
Three Days Grace - Over and Over vs. Skylar Grey - Invisible it was hard to decide because in Over and Over the singer admits he is the one to blame but he doesn't sound that way, the Invisible is fine however i didn't like the emphasis on drums beat. But i like honesty so ...
Elton John - Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word vs. Dolly Parton - Jolene Dolly Parton just convinces me better, she reached out to me, she means what she sings, Elton too, but less
Bob Dylan - Knocking on Heaven's Door vs. Edith Piaf - Non, Je ne regrette rien pardon me the question but is this Dylan? It surely doesn't sound like him.
The Suede - The Wild Ones vs. Elton John - Candle in the Wind i don't think there was need to use that remastered version, i don't hear that power of Elton's voice . Where is it?
Tool - Wings for Mary 1 vs. Imagine Dragons - Demons
Devil Doll - It Was Raining vs. Pink Floyd - Don't Leave Me Now

ROUND 1 - DAY 4:
Three Days Grace - Over and Over vs. Skylar Grey - Invisible (I liked the song "Invisible", but it would be better without the drums.)
Elton John - Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word vs. Dolly Parton - Jolene (Tough choice. The Elton John song has a sadder feeling to it, but "Jolene" is the better song.)
Bob Dylan - Knocking on Heaven's Door vs. Edith Piaf - Non, Je ne regrette rien (I liked this singer's voice better than Dylan's voice, and I think I might have liked the other song more if I could understand the lyrics, but she sounds too happy to be sad.)
The Suede - The Wild Ones vs. Elton John - Candle in the Wind
Tool - Wings for Mary 1 vs. Imagine Dragons - Demons
Devil Doll - It Was Raining vs. Pink Floyd - Don't Leave Me Now (I don't really care for the Devil Doll singer's voice, but this was the better song.)
Michael Jackson - Will You Be There vs. Bullet For My Valentine - Bittersweet Memories (Although I think the Michael Jackson song would be better if it didn't have the long annoying intro.)
Obi - Plague On This House vs. Billie Holiday - Gloomy Sunday (Tough choice. I liked both songs.)

ROUND 1 - DAY 5:
The Sundays - Wild Horses vs. The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Loving Feeling
Two great songs and both sad. YLTLF holds personal painful memories for 14 year old me. I played it on repeat for weeks when I got dumped and then Goose :bawling:
Chicago ~ Wishing You Were Here vs. James Brown - Mama's Dead
Amália Rodrigues - Fado Português vs. George Strait - So Much Like My Dad
Katie Melua - The One I Love Is Gone vs. Tool - Schism
Bruce Springsteen - My Fathers House vs. Radiohead - House of Cards
Really tough one, unfortunately that they were paired together. Had to listen twice and just went for Radiohead
Swans - No Cure For The Lonely vs. Johnny Cash - I Don't Hurt Any More
The House Of Love - Loneliness Is A Gun vs. Oasis - Cast No Shadow
Reminds me of the potential we all have to build people up and to hurt them

ROUND 1 - DAY 5:
The Sundays - Wild Horses vs. The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Loving Feeling - interesting Rolling Stones cover. [people should point out if the music is a cover or not in their selections; or if it's the original or re-vamped version as well - and yes I know, I forgot to do so on the "Mad Word" track. It helps to know the original concept].
Chicago ~ Wishing You Were Here vs. James Brown - Mama's Dead
Amália Rodrigues - Fado Português vs. George Strait - So Much Like My Dad - I don't even like Fado [sung Fado, that is. The instrumentals are damn impressive].
Katie Melua - The One I Love Is Gone vs. Tool - Schism - see, we all have [naturally] different interpretations on what consists a "sad song". For some it's a girl singing on a piano about being dumped; for others is a guy playing a guitar singing about his dead horses, for others yet is all of these things or none of them. It can be many things, even a song about miscommunication and blame.
Bruce Springsteen - My Fathers House vs. Radiohead - House of Cards
Swans - No Cure For The Lonely vs. Johnny Cash - I Don't Hurt Any More
The House Of Love - Loneliness Is A Gun vs. Oasis - Cast No Shadow
U2 - Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own vs. Pat Benatar ~ Hell is for Children

Cesaria Evora - Sodade (Alternate Link for U.S.) vs. Tool - Sober
James Ingram ~ Just Once vs. Regina Spektor - Ode to Divorce
Skylar Grey - Words vs. Mark Chesnutt - I'll Think of Something
Lorraine Ellison - Stay With Me Baby vs. Gary Jules – Mad World
System Of A Down - Lonely Day vs. Gilbert Bécaud - Nathalie
Electrelane - I Only Always Think (Alternate Link for Non-U.S.) vs. Kevin Sharp - Nobody Knows
Oasis - Don't Go Away (Alternate Link for U.S.) vs. John Grant - Why Don't You Love Me Anymore
Sia - Breathe Me (Alternate Link for U.S.) vs. Kris Kristofferson - Sunday Morning Coming Down

This one was tough for me. I gave it to Oasis simply because it sounded more layered and complex to me. If the song was "Girl with the Loneliest Eyes" I might have picked it.

I respectfully disagree. Apart from giving credit to the original artist for copyright purpose, I don't really think it matters for the purpose of this tournament. You might say you like the original better or you find it sadder, but I don't really feel it helps anyone to know the background of a particular song. Your emotional response to a song is either there or it is not regardless of knowing the history of the song in question. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Since we are using names of artist and song as an identifier, then yes, people should be aware whether or not the song is a cover, original, etc. Or, then just lets use the numbers instead of names of band and songs.

Your emotional response to a song is either there or it is not regardless of knowing the history of the song in question. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The sense is that If you don't tell who's song that is originally other people will never find it.
An example: I knew that song was a cover of Rolling Stones, but other people [who don't even listen to the band] may never know.
Another example: I posted a cover song made by Cathedral of a Black Sabbath song. In this case, by pointing it it is indeed a cover the listener may feel inclined to check both Cathedral AND Black Sabbath material [I also made it clear that I prefer the cover made by Cathedral than the original because - more often than not - Black Sabbath's songs sound better when played and sung by other bands].
The other issue is the original vs re-mix/re-vamping. A song was posted here whose original is quite different to the revamped version. The original, even though from the same guy, fell more into the "sad" category than the actual music posted [which sounded like a very happy tune]. By stating that the song is a revamped mix, you are making people aware of it not being the original [I also did this with Radiohead's Morning Bell/Amnesiac, which is a revamped version of the same song from Kid A, but falls better into to "sad" category].

The idea of these tournaments is one song versus another song, and the songs that are against each other are the actual nominated songs, not the original versions and/or the original artists. You should be listening to the songs in the links before you vote, and voting on these songs, not voting based on the song title and/or artists.
If you want to mention that the song is a cover version and/or who originally recorded it, you are welcome to do so, but it's not required. (Sometimes the person who nominated the song doesn't even know that it's a cover version.)
(Please note that this is just my opinion as a person who plays in these song tournaments, not a rule as the host of this tournament. It's up to the host of each individual tournament what rules they choose to set up for their tournaments.)

The question of original, cover, remix, remaster is immaterial in terms of any tournament (unless it's part of the eligibility requirement) aside from the correct artist being accreditted imo. If a particular nomination that I was previously unaware of intrigues me I'll research it - there is a wealth of information at one's fingertips these days and sometimes for me that's part of the fun and I've bought a few albums off the back of other people's nominations in these tournaments. Like Gbg, that's just my opinion as a participant and nothing to do with having hosted quite a few of them.
If people were made declare the origins of each nomination I would say that actually might act as a deterrent to some against participating. Again just my opinion.

Schism is an excellent track but like Lil Dev said we all have different interpretations of what makes us feel sad and for me the most sadness it brings is in voting against it here - in a non-themed tournament I may have voted differently and up against different opposition here I may well have done so too

True, sometimes the person doesn't even know it's a cover.
[@Chypmunk But by your standard, there's a wealth of information on the fingertips, so why wouldn't they know it?
The answer is simple: Because if we go by Youtube, many cover songs don't have the original in the description. [and in many cd albums it's only in fine printing]]
But that's not the point of what I said, and it has nothing to do with tournaments or rules. it's a "heads up"
What I said is that it would be nice that people put a remark on their choices so the listener has the chance to find new things they wouldn't otherwise [specially when it is a cover].

Katie Melua - The One I Love Is Gone vs. Tool - Schism - That Katie song is lovely. I like the Tool songs but I can't watch the vids are freaky!
Bruce Springsteen - My Fathers House vs. Radiohead - House of Cards - no contest here. I aways think of this song when my friends tell me they're not talking to their mum or dad or other family member, I always have to say something that reflects this song.
Swans - No Cure For The Lonely vs. Johnny Cash - I Don't Hurt Any More nice swans song, but it's Johnny and I like this song
The House Of Love - Loneliness Is A Gun vs. Oasis - Cast No Shadow - I thought I'd vote Oasis but Loneliness it's pretty and sad at the same time
U2 - Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own vs. Pat Benatar ~ Hell is for Children - not mad on either

I tried to make a multi quote but I don't seem to be able to. I was replying to the "wealth of information available at the finger tips" you said. earlier.
I didn't say it should be obligatory, I said it would be nice as an info [again it as nothing to do with tournaments or rules. It's just a thought on being thoughtful].
I kinda see where you're coming from, but I think it's best as it is. We could supply loads of info about each song and why we chose it, but we can say that when we vote for it. Stating that it's a cover of whatever then leads to 'but so and so first had a hit with it, but the cover is the most well known and so on'
and what about the songs in a foreign language? I've held off saying if you can't understand the lyrics of the ones I nommed you can always go and google them, but it's no big deal. If people don't want to know the background of songs it's fine, it's not part of the tournament. However if people do go off and discover things from my noms then it's great, but it's still not part of the tournament. The tournament is nominating that particular youtube link whatever the history it doesn't matter, that's your nomination. If you want to say something about it when it's matched up and you're voting then that's the place to say it.
that's what I think anyway!

Click the multi-quote option on each and every post you want to quote except the last one ... just click the normal quote for that one.
There is a wealth of information at ones fingertips. Back in the 70's and 80's sometimes one had to work bloody hard to dig out info on stuff - nowadays it's a feckin' doddle by comparison even if it's still sometimes not always possible :D
Btw - I never said you said it should be obligatory ;)

Thanks man, appreciate it.
There IS indeed a lot of info, and I gave you the shortcomings of the Youtube/Fineprinting example as deterrent [plus, imagining that you hear a song and you are not even keen on the version it is/singer it may deter you to even consider tracking the original/cover]. There are many examples on youtube of covers that aren't indicated as being such, and here's a vid about it as per example (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGFlD2pbn00)]

As I said before, it has nothing to do with rules or tournaments. Just a curio [I personally enjoy learning new things and discovering new venues. I even gave the Black Sabbath example on how most Cover songs for that particular band sound - and are executed - better than the original recordings in my extended observation of that track- and thus gave the listener 3 new bits of info they may find interesting [Black Sabbath, a band called Cathedral and the remark on the quality of the covers outshining the originals]. It's just a curio. What people do wit it [and if they care] it's up to them, but it's always nice to make it available
Not an obligatory thing either.
It's not a matter of being well known or not in the end. It's an extra info that may [or not] be interesting for the person who is listening to further discover stuff they wouldn't otherwise [or not, it's totally subjective and dependent of their curiosity].

Yes for playing the songs in a tournament. Easy enough to delve deeper elsewhere if one wants to. Nuff said on this circular convo :)

I can't remember. I would think I did, but then I would know whether it was the Beatles or not. Anyway. Too late to change now
You are correct. Not the Beatles, must have linked the wrong one up. Still a good song though.

I love this Aretha song, but I am even more impressed by Cissy Houston’s (Whitney’s mom) backing vocals. Such an amazing voice as well.
