There are many Sad/Melancholic songs around. Some resonate with us, while others no so much.
Share the Sad/Melancholic songs you like best and tell us why.

A-HA - Stay On These Roads (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWey1DBAchM)
It depicts an old man whose life long love is about to die, and as they exchange their last words to each other, promising to meet again on this earth she slips in and out of conscientiousness.
Personal appeal - I love old people. And many old people die alone. I've witnessed the deep claws of sadness that took my grandfather from this world after his wife died. He had a cancer for quite a while and he hold on to life to take care of my grandmother, cause she was blind and bed ridden for years.
Radiohead - Pyramid Song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3M_Gg1xAHE4)
Welll, most Radiohead songs are damn melancholic, but this one takes the cake. It's about suicide and peacefulness after loss.
Metallica - The Unforgiven I (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24mXpUq-KJo)
Who hasn't ever felt that no matter how much we struggle, the world seems always to bury us under cold, unfair scrutiny? Powerful stuff.
King Crimson - Starless (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfR6_V91fG8)
Starless and Bible Black [or, if you prefer, sadness and hopelessness] is all about feeling depressed with no light of happiness at the end of the tunnel. I've been there, you've been there, we've all been there.
Bruce Springsteen - Streets of Philadelphia (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYLr9FtYtME)
It could be any street in any city of any country. The lyrics say it all.

Country music definitely holds the record for sobbin' in your beer music. A lot of people dismiss it, and sometimes I want to myself when it drops into the maudlin, I just want to laugh, but sometimes if you're in the mood it's a real killer. GBG finds the best ones. At the best they can just feel like they can relate to everyone without being dirgelike, at the worse they're unwittingly funny. I like the sad drinking ones.

Thank you @christine (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=7545). I was debating whether to put this version or Nico's version of My Funny Valentine. She is not everyone's cup of tea, but I like her deep, monotone voice.
Alison Goldfrappp is very cool and an amazing vocalist as well. That whole album with Annabel on it is really slow and introspective, but my favorite is still Felt Mountain which is more on a chill side rather than sad side (if that makes any sense).

Did you like this one GBG? I didn't like it's message - the parents are godless so must be abusive!
That's the point of the song. Did you listen to the lyrics all the way to the end of the song? The parents always fight in front of the little girl, until one night she witnesses her parents murder/suicide. Yes, the parents are probably abusive, but I like this song because of the final verse. After the little girl is taken in by a new family, she goes to Sunday school, and we find out that while the little girl was hiding behind the couch, she was protected by Jesus. (I'm not a religious person, but the song is very powerful.)
Lyrics of the final verse:
"Her first day of Sunday school, the teacher walked in
And a small little girl stared at a picture of Him
She said, I know that man there on that cross
I don't know His name, but I know He got off
Cause He was there in my old house
And held me close to His side
As I hid there behind our couch
The night that my parents died."

I always listen to the lyrics of songs. When you get a chance, listen to the song that Christine was talking about. She's right about it being about abusive parents, but there's much more to the song than that. The song is about the little girl, not the parents.
But if you keep this up, I might have to find a song about someone dying during a shoot-out while rustling cattle.

Randy Travis - On The Other Hand
"But on the other hand, there's a golden band,
To remind me of someone, who would not understand.
On one hand I could stay, and be your lovin' man,
But the reason I must go, is on the other hand."

Metal Heart- Cat Power
There are many Cat Power songs that are haunting and sad. This one in particular just pierces me with a cold knife, as much as I love it. It also reminds me of high school and recalls vivid memories that I still miss of friends I've lost over the years thanks to mental illness. I bring that last part up because suffering with mental illness gives sad/melancholy songs an added layer of ironic therapy.
Second those drums and vocals kick in, man.

Also, this one gives me chills every time. I've spent many nights listening to it on repeat. And every time it kicks in on the soundtrack in the actual film I find myself entranced. Have you ever seen a portal?

Tim McGraw - I Keep It Under My Hat
"I keep the brim pulled down
Whenever those teardrops come around
So nobody else can see
Just what your memory does to me
I know I can't hide
But baby, I've still got my pride
When your memory comes back
I keep it under my hat"

Lee Ann Womack - The Fool
"You don't know me but I know who you are.
Mind if I sit down.
Do I look familiar if I don't well I should.
I'm sure you've seen me around.
I know you've probably heard my name,
Though we've not been introduced.
I'm the fool in love with the fool
Who's still in love with you."

Jimmy Harnen with Synch - Where Are You Now
"Where are you now?
Is someone there tonight,
Holding what was mine?
Where are you now?
You wonder where I am.
Are you really feeling fine?"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpAklvGku-4
I found this piece recently. I find it to be very powerful and I know that although it is quite gloomy, it is one of those sad songs that help give hope.
"Look, I really feel lost without you
I hate the fact you think the world is better off without you
And my mind's spinning, this is the line finish
Truth is, I don't care how you feel about my feelings
And I'd be lying to you if I told you I'm fine, listen
I know that you can hear me, all I need is like five minutes
I just wanna reach inside the casket and pull you out
I'm sorry this isn't something that we both could figure out
I wish I could hear you now"

I grew up with jazz muso's for parents, listening to jazz almost daily but never tired of the very melancholy but always beautiful trumpet and voice of Chet Baker. Still a favourite.

Also peep the Whitey Morgan cover version of this song, musically it's less sad and more bad ass. Good song either way.

Shenandoah - Ghost in This House
"I'm just a ghost in this house
I'm just a shadow upon these walls
As quietly as a mouse I haunt these halls
I'm just a whisper of smoke
I'm all that's left of two hearts on fire
That once burned out of control
You took my body and soul
I'm just a ghost in this house"
