Remember when straight men forgot to brush their teeth, put off shaving for a few days and went out in public with nothing but water as a hairstyling treatment. Remember when a pair of jeans and a t-shirt was the male attire of the day? Remember?

Well today that is no longer the case. Straight men are spending more time in front of the mirror than their female counterparts. The masculine male is now comfortable scrubbing his face with an exfoliant before smoothing on a moisturizer. He is having no problems washing his hair with a hair-renewal shampoo before conditioning. He is comfortable shopping for the right hair gel, and styling his hair into a fashionable look. Todays heteromale isn't just splashing on an aftershave lotion, he is buying fragrances designed especially for his body type.

Throw in a self-tanner, designer clothes, shoes and jewlery and the modern man is ready for a night out.

Are you a modern heteromale? What "products" do you use?

A question for the women here: Are you attracted to the modern male heterosexual, or do you like your men raw and tough?

I like my guys to be guys… which means clean but not a lot of foo-foo… I don’t spend a lot of time in front of the mirror nor a lot of money on cosmetics or clothes… so I really don’t think I want a guy who spends more then me... ;)

I know what you mean Cait'. The trend today, especially for movie stars and models, is to be freshly shaven, smooth skinned and hairstyled. Look at Affleck, Cruise, Pitt. It used to be that Mickey Rourke was desirable, or Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones. But today the guy that lets himself go looks like Jack Black. Even the macho males of the 80's have turned around. Ah-nold and Stallone look very GQ these days.

Are you attracted to foo-foo males on screen, but prefer a man's man?

I just smell like a summers day naturally (the Thames in heat, mmm ;))

So, ok, some of my students bought me some after-shave a while back. But they promise me i don't smell ;)

Nah, in all seriousness, i'm a bit of a look-after-the-cleanliness-but-let's-not-obsess crowd. No facials or de-furrings for this feline-lover. I'd rather curl up in someone's real smell from time to time (if they've been eating fine, no need to scrub with lime)

No…not really… I’m attracted to their acting ability if they’re good but not necessarily their looks… Rourke and Ford were much more appealing in their day because they both had individuality instead of looking like a plastic Ken doll… ;D

Ben Affleck and Tom Cruise are ugly little ninconpoops who need to be thrown away to the garbage. Especially Cruise, Mr. "I'M NOT GAY!!" And I hate the Ben Affleck/Jennifer Lopez thing. He just looks like her little boy... mama's grown son. It's annoying. And I see NOTHING in his little farty-tarty friend, Matt Damon. Brad Pitt, however, is the sexy celebrity, of course, and that's why he owns the Hollywood gossip magazines in pictures and he sets the standard as a godly, nobody can match, sexy masculine male, and we see great images and hear normal, wife/husband stories about his marriage to Jennifer Aniston, who's not some diva bitch like Lopez who takes power away from Affleck, I think.
Really... what is so hot about him?? I think he should play Mickey Mouse at Disney World.

I was watching the first Terminator yesterday and Arnold Schwarzenegger looks GREAT in it. Loved how he starts off with the punk's clothes and that longer hair and muscular, nude god's body.

I guess I'm hopelessly behind the times. I don't bother much about obsessive grooming. If I didn't have to shave for my job, I never would. And I like to keep my hair as short as possible so I don't have to comb it I do brush my teeth though, because, ewww.

.Remember when a pair of jeans and a t-shirt was the male attire of the day? Remember?

Throw in a flannel shirt and a Boston Bruins cap, and that was pretty much every day since I was 18!

I'm somewhere in the middle. I don't think there's anything wrong with basic grooming, but I do think the plethora of hair gels and bodysprays on the market are a little excessive. Today's male is without a doubt a bit more androgynous than its mid-20th-century counterpart.

That said, I use deoderant, a little bit of hair gel if it's necessary (though I prefer to avoid it), and I own a modest amount of cologne, in case an occassion necessitates it. That's about as far as I'll go. I do generally carry a small comb around with me, though.

So if this thread is called "The New Male Heterosexual" it's implying something about homosexuals. Are the new male heterosexuals becoming homosexual-like?

It's no coincidence that Reporter66 created this thread during the time of the much hyped new show, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

Yeah I've seen ads for that--haven't watched it though. There was a news story on TV recently about Metrosexuals; the new term used to describe straight men who like to groom themselves excessively. I wondered if anyone hear could be described as a Metrosexual.

I'm really not sure what "FOO FOO" is but it sounds adorable to me.

"Metrosexual" sounds way too stupid. But then, what else do you get from a TV news story?
