View Full Version : Rodent Repeats... A Top 50 List

Doing my Top Movies reshuffle early this year...

I've basically gone over my favourite movies again, and have discovered something.
The "Repeat" of the title is because I tend to repeat the same movies over and over in my lists, just in a different order... and... some people have music, others have their TV, but well, personally, I switch the player on and stick in a DVD which I don't mind if it repeats itself over and over as generic background noise.

A lot of the time I'll have the film on once, then flick it to the Commentary Track and play again. If there's more than one Commentary, I've been known to go through the lot.

So, this list of movies I've repeated in my past favourites lists is also a list of movies I use as a default background noise when I'm MoFo-ing and surfing the interweb.

Oh, and... a new(ish) Top 10 will be coming up as well :D

I've never been a fan of anything TMNT and I don't think I've seen the movie. I vaguely remember liking ID4 but haven't seen it in about 20 years.

The Rodent

Gonna chuck 4 at once in this one seeing as they are what they are...
And, yes... I have actually sat and repeated #45-43, then repeated them again with the various Commentary Tracks

Here's the gist of it: Close Encounters with 100% more explosions. And Jeff Goldblum.

That is some classy background noise at #49. #41 I love the soundtrack. But I could never have it as just background noise.

I figured that would get some likes :D
I've done 50-41 now, so taking a break for a bit.

I tried watching Lawless but ended up shutting if off (Shia Labeouf ). I hate all things LOTR and Star Wars (though I've not seen TFA, I'm just assuming I'll hate it). Haven't seen Blade Runner.

Doesn't it get to be really redundant acting like Ghostbusters 2 is the center of your universe? This is a movie that - if you're a fan of it - you should watch it maybe once or twice every five years. It is not something you need to speak of every week.

Well, after the remake was spewed out, which I have yet to see btw, I found myself a new respect for GB2.
I always sort of liked it, but now it's a firm favourite.

The remake was good for something I guess... bringing the originals a new lease of life

Don't you guys ever get bored talking about the same movies over and over again, everyday for years and years? What good does it do? Stop the insanity.

I'm inclined to agree with this. If all you're doing is reshuffling the order of the exact same movies as were on your last countdown (or the one before it) with maybe a couple of new entries (and not even saying anything new about them except a blanket statement that these are all "background noise" movies for you), then it does beg the question as to why the list even needs to be made. Are the differences between this list and your last one really so significant that a whole new thread needs to happen?

It does get to the question of why we do these Top # lists in the first place. They serve as personal statements about our cinematic preferences, so the big question becomes what you're saying with this new countdown that you didn't say in any of your other ones. With nothing new to say from either you or the people who comment on it, what's the point?

Well, at least the other members of this movie forum actually have favourites lists...

Rather than trolling my list, SC, go make your own.

If JayDee's list index is any indication, he's done at least three of them so far (though one of them seems to be a #101-#200 following on from one of the other lists so it's more like two). That being said, he still knows to space them out or not repeat them unless there's a big enough difference to justify it.

I went eight years between making my Top 100 lists. It wasn't my intention to go that long (it was originally going to be five years), but the reason why I wanted to leave such a gap is that I wanted to reflect how much things had changed between lists - half the second list was made of new entries, after all.

It's not just Rodent and this list. I really do wonder a lot... marvel at... the fact that people talk about the same movies over and over and over again. I'm not saying I'm not guilty of this, either. Heck, one can wonder why I constantly do the Young Guns jokes to Rodent. Why does that seem like such a fun thing to do?

In Rodent's signature, he has a link to his last Top Movies list, which he started at the end of June last year - it's only about eight months old. The issue isn't so much the movies themselves so much as the fact that they're effectively the same ones from that last list.

I don't care that they're the same movies and that he's doing this. It's just... I see this over and over again... people discussing and bringing up THE SAME MOVIES. Not saying it's supposed to be a bad thing. I am just questioning it and bringing the issue up.

You know how many times people talk about Pulp Fiction? It's insane. I hear about that movie everyday. I love that film, but it drives me crazy.

But guess what? Sometimes, people want to talk about the same movies. If you want to talk about something different, which is perfectly fine and a good idea, just do that.

Ok, the stuff you do is totally different to the stuff I do... but your sense of self-importance and determination to be different, then ragging on everyone else's choices and preferences, comes across as a die hard mentality of being different for the sake of it... and that your opinion on the obscure carries more weight because it's abn opinion on the obscure.

You remind me of people who like obscure bands, then completely go off them when you find out someone you know also likes their songs

Whereas this attitude is exactly why it's so easy to criticise this thread. As has been noted, the issue isn't the exact films you've chosen so much as the fact that you've started a whole new thread to mention the same films from your last thread. It's like a sequel that copies the plot of the original word-for-word only to add in a couple of new scenes and put the rest into a different order. It just comes across as a pointless exercise where the people who appreciate it the most seem to be the ones who never saw the original in the first place. For a dude who has griped about so many unnecessary Hollywood reboots, you don't seem to have that problem when it comes to redoing your own lists. You can also do better than using a weak ad hominem to defend yourself.

When the black people got ready to do something about it, the white people said 'Nuh-uh. Don't worry about it. Let us handle this.' and took full cans of soda and hit the KKK in the heads with 'em. You could see blood flying. I was like 'Ooh!' Snatched their hoods off their heads too. They said 'That's right. Let us see your faces, ya cowards! You're not one of us. You're not one of us, ya cowards!' And the KKK ain't never came back to Augusta after that."

Oh, recently I've found myself drinking while watching The Thing.
I dunno why... but when I feel like getting wasted, I stick that on and drink while watching.

I think it's Macready drinking whiskey in the film that did it.

I have only seen The Thing once. I remember thinking it was okay - weird - but I haven't had a desire to return to it. It kinda annoys me hearing about it so much here.

Rewatched that a couple weeks ago. It's stood the test of time well.

He is your drinking buddy that exists in a movie.

Anyhoo, thanks for all the reps and posts, everyone :)

I think next year, I'll repost this entire list, in the same order, and tag Iro in every post :D

Maybe one of the Romero zombie films.

The Dark Half is a good one Romero did outside of those. One of the best Stephen King adaptations too, and I say that as a big fan of the book.

Jaws is great, don't like Tremors and haven't seen Cabin in the Woods.

Fun thread. I like how it functioned as our own little chill club with Rodent posting films as entertainment for us.

Not as mainstream as putting out at least three different favourites lists. You're, what, the fifth person to do that this month?

I mean, I put up with people asking "where's the new list" for years, but nobody does that anymore because list inflation has devalued them. I still don't play on doing another one for about four-and-a-half years. By then, Rodent will have done at least eight.
