It's baseball time. Ohyeah.gif

First thing's first: if you're not in this league, there may be room for you! It's a pretty competitive league, so you'll want to have played fantasy baseball before, and playing Roto-style, in particular, is a big plus. If you want to play, just reply and say so, and we'll do our best to make room. Note that we try to give priority to a) more active users and b) returning owners.

If you played last year, you may already have an invite waiting for you at the same email addresses you used last year. If you don't have one, please PM me (http://www.movieforums.com/community/private.php?do=newpm&u=1) the address you're using and I'll have another sent.

Okay, onto the draft time. I'm suggesting a tentative date of Sunday, March 19th at 1:00 PM ET (10:00 AM PT), with a backup date a week later (the 26th) at the same time. Please reply by letting me know your availability for both dates. IE: "I can do both the 19th and 26th" or "I can do the 19th but not the 26th."

I'll keep a running list of confirmed owners here;

Yoda (Freedonia Ducks)
seanc (Mudville Nine)
rauldc14 (Peanuts&Crackerjacks)
Banknotes Harper (High-Level Arbitrage)
Sedai (Clockwork Angels)

mark f (Dodgers)
TONGO (The Naturals)
Adamantium18 (Hakuna Machado)
nostromo87 (Weapon X)
Powdered Water (Return of the Roids)
mikeython1 (Done and Dunn)

I would also like to get in on the ground floor here and propose, as I have many times before, that we consider doing an auction-style draft this year as opposed to the snake format.

Pros - fun, more control over your team construction, gives everyone a fair chance to own certain players (e.g. everyone gets a shot at owning Mike Trout)

Cons - the draft takes a longer time, we'd need almost everyone to draft (auto-drafting makes it less enjoyable)

rauldc14
02-15-17, 12:47 PM
I don't think I would want to do auction though. Of course if I'm minority, then boot me :)

Yoda
02-15-17, 12:48 PM
I would be amenable to an auction. As Tim says, you'll really want to make sure you don't miss it, and you'll need to block out more time. It's definitely a move away from a more casual playstyle, but it's more fair and you get a shot at every player.

I will say that, because this is such a big shift, we'll need a lot of agreement on the switch. Not unanimous, but more than just a simple majority vote, too. Please weigh in ASAP! :) We want to decide one way or the other as soon as we can, so people can mock draft and prepare accordingly.

Sedai
02-15-17, 12:55 PM
It's that time of year again! :)

Unsure on the auction for now - I need to learn more about it before making a decision.

Banknotes Harper
02-15-17, 01:54 PM
I'd be happy to answer any questions about it. We implemented it in my other league two years ago and it's generally beloved.

Quick summary: Each manager starts with a sum of money (~$260). There is a turn order that is followed throughout the draft. On each manager's turn, they nominate a player, *any* player for auction and put in a starting bid (usually just the minimum of $1). From there, a clock starts (~30 seconds) and all managers can, at any time, increase the bid on the player (and it will reset the clock). In our league, once the clock falls below a certain threshold (like 10 seconds), it will only reset to that threshold when the bid goes up. Eventually, everyone will drop out and the player will go to the manager with the winning bid (the espn interface has a "going once, going twice, sold" sound byte as the time trickles down). Then it's the next manager's turn to nominate a player and the process resets. You also have to keep $1/player slot that you have left to ensure that you fill out your whole roster. So, if you have $5 left and 3 more roster slots to fill, you can't spend more than $3 on your next player.

Definite yes on auction from me. Love it.

seanc
02-15-17, 04:21 PM
That's a very good synopsis by Tim. It really is very simple but also quite a bit more strategic. You might not want advice from such a poor player but the biggest thing with an auction is have a clear game plan. I would say the biggest mistake you can make is leaving a bunch of money on the table and that doesn't feel good at all.

Fabulous

I'd like to join again. I should be available for both draft dates. Unsure on the auction draft though.

Yoda
02-15-17, 04:49 PM
Quick heads-up: Patrick (Frightened Inmate No. 2) is bowing out this year because of the time commitment involved. He was a good owner and I told him he's welcome to come back next year or beyond.

This means we should probably have room for nostromo and PW, at least.

mark f
02-15-17, 05:26 PM
I'm in, at least at Yahoo, so Ill report I'm in here too. Either draft date is OK. Does the auction only apply to the draft? In other words, are waivers the same as they've always been?

Yoda
02-15-17, 05:27 PM
Yeah, just the draft.

Does effect trades. You have to stay under your cap. Wsiver players are $1. If I'm not mistaken you can set it up for them to be bid on, then if they pass through they are $1.

Yoda
02-15-17, 05:38 PM
Hmmm, the cap thing is optional, I believe. Ditto for changing waivers. Wasn't planning anything like that because I figured this one change would be big enough, but I'm open to whatever.

Nostromo87
02-15-17, 07:02 PM
I'll dance granted there's an opening. Either date works, though I'd prefer the 26th as I have a paper due March 20th, which would be the day after the first date. Not a big deal either way since I can get the paper out of the way early if March 19th is chosen. I lean towards snake draft.

TONGO
02-16-17, 12:07 PM
Just a headsup, but an auctions style format will make our draft take over 5 hours, Im pretty sure thats a safe estimate, Tim can correct me if Im wrong.

Im ok with either (I was pushing for auction style the past 2 seasons, just cause it looks cool :D, Ive never done it before myself) DEFINITELY do a Mock Draft to work out all your "learning kinks". You do not want to learn on draft day.

Banknotes Harper
02-16-17, 01:26 PM
A quick survey of the members of my other league makes it sound like it took ~4 hours each year (including a ~10 min matinee in the middle). You can make tweaks to the amount of time on the clock to make it go faster (and roster sizes, obviously), but it's undoubtedly a larger time commitment than a snake draft.

Banknotes Harper
02-16-17, 01:31 PM
And I would agree with Tongo: if we do switch to it, it's worth doing a mock draft just to get a feel for how it goes

And we haven't heard either way from Adam, PW, or whoever the last owner ends up being.

We're obviously not going to do this without a very strong majority in favor, though, and we want to decide soon, so if any of you undecided guys ( Sedai, Fabulous, mark f) have come to a decision, let us know.

Sedai
02-17-17, 12:16 PM
I am leaning towards staying with the standard format this time around. I have a hard enough time drafting as it is!

Yoda
02-17-17, 12:18 PM
No worries, just trying to get a decision one way or the other. Thanks.

I think it's fair to say we'd need unanimous support from everyone else to make the switch, which seems unlikely, but if some other people can weigh in so we can confirm, I'd appreciate it.

Either day works for me. I wouldn't mind trying the auction style draft but I have zero experience with it so I'm leaning towards a no vote. I just don't have enough time online to really get into it.

Yoda
02-17-17, 12:54 PM
Well, that's definitely enough opposition to stick with the old auction style then. Maybe we can give it a shot next year. :)

Yoda
02-17-17, 02:34 PM
Okay, mikeython1's back in, which gives us 12. Ten returning owners, with nostromo joining and PW making his return. Good stuff. Here's the whole list (I imagine nostromo will change the team name he inherited, but here's what it is for now):

Yoda (Freedonia Ducks)
seanc (Mudville Nine)
rauldc14 (Peanuts&Crackerjacks)
Banknotes Harper (High-Level Arbitrage)
Sedai (Clockwork Angels)
Fabulous (The Empire)
mark f (Dodgers)
TONGO (The Naturals)
Adamantium18 (Quickie Marte)
nostromo87 (The Loose Seals)
Powdered Water (Return of the Roids)
mikeython1 (Done and Dunn)

So far, no objections to either draft date. So unless something changes (speak up quickly if there's a problem!), we're looking at a standard snake draft on March 19th, 1:00 PM ET.

Banknotes Harper

In response to Tongo's post on the message board, I would also be in favor of determining the draft order ahead of time and posting it on here to allow us better prep for the draft, provided the rest of the league agrees.

mikeython1
02-20-17, 04:19 PM
I agree. I want to know ahead of time. There is so much research involved with baseball compared to football I feel knowing would help a lot.

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:22 PM
I was just going to ask about that the other day, since we've done it a few years in a row, but it's been a crazy week so I forgot to actually post the post.

Sure, I'd be glad to. I'll do the same as before: assign numbers to each team and then use random.org. I can do that right now, even. Nobody's ever objected so I'll just assume this is fine, but on the off chance an argument surfaces we can always go back to random.

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:28 PM
Okay, same as last year, I'm assigning numbers based on the order the teams show up for me on the league site, which is (NOTE: this is not the draft order, it's just the numbering used to pick the draft order):

Freedonia Ducks
Clockwork Angels
Dodgers
High-Level Arbitrage
Mudville Nine
Peanuts&Crackerjacks
The Naturals
The Empire
The Loose Seals
Quickie Marte
Return of the Roids
Done and Dunn

I'll go to www.random.org and ask for a random number between 1 and 12. Whichever comes up gets the first pick. Then I remove that team from the list, re-number the remaining teams 1-11, ask for a random number between 1 and 11, and that team gets the second pick. And so on until they're all gone.

Starting in a few minutes.

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:29 PM
Okay, first random number is...1!

Freedonia Ducks pick first.

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:30 PM
(RIGGED.)

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:30 PM
Second number is...11!

Done and Dunn pick second.

rauldc14
02-20-17, 04:30 PM
Not rigged (if I'm 2ND)

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:31 PM
Third number is...3!

High-Level Arbitrage picks third.

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:31 PM
Fourth number is...4!

Clockwork Angels pick fourth.

seanc
02-20-17, 04:31 PM
Random.org is fake random. Ask anybody.

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:31 PM
Fifth number is...6!

The Loose Seals pick fifth.

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:32 PM
Sixth number is...6 again!

Quickie Marte picks sixth.

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:32 PM
Okay, that's the halfway point. Taking a break now.

Kidding. Here we go.

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:33 PM
Seventh number is...2!

Mudville Nine pick seventh.

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:33 PM
Eighth number is...3!

The Naturals pick eighth.

seanc
02-20-17, 04:33 PM
Lucky 7

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:33 PM
Ninth number is...1!

Dodgers pick ninth.

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:34 PM
Tenth number is...2!

The Empire picks tenth.

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:34 PM
Eleventh number is...1!

Peanuts&Crackerjacks pick eleventh.

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:34 PM
Which means PW's Return of the Roids picks 12th.

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:35 PM
Draft order:

Freedonia Ducks
Done and Dunn
High-Level Arbitrage
Clockwork Angels
The Loose Seals
Quickie Marte
Mudville Nine
The Naturals
Dodgers
The Empire
Peanuts&Crackerjacks
Return of the Roids

I haven't done any mocks, so I don't even have an opinion on which spots are the best.

Also, Mike Trout is on the trade block.

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:36 PM
Ha. I just saw Yahoo has an option to randomize order for you. I'm like 80% sure that didn't exist before.

Oh well. This is more dramatic anyway.

rauldc14
02-20-17, 04:40 PM
Oh, there is nothing better than the 11th pick. I should be able to at least get the 11th best player!!!!!!!

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:42 PM
You joke, but those are often as good, or better. Cuz of the whole thing where we don't just draft in one round. You get the 11th and 14th best players, instead of, say, the 1st and 24th.

Last year that meant Arenado and Bryant instead of Trout and Marte, BTW.

rauldc14
02-20-17, 04:43 PM
Oh, thought it was just one round this year. I'm good now.

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:45 PM

rauldc14
02-20-17, 04:47 PM
It doesn't really matter to me. I'm just horsing around.

Yoda
02-20-17, 04:47 PM
I think this year the only range I'd want to avoid is the middle of the round, because you can make a decent case for pretty much anyone from 4-8.

Banknotes Harper
02-21-17, 06:45 PM
For next year, can you make a video of you pulling the names out of a hat for draft order? It's not that I don't trust you—I do—it's that I'd be into the (probably) awkward nature of it.

Yoda
02-21-17, 06:58 PM
I actually did think about verifying this, even though I know nobody needs proof. That would be more fun. Yeah, good idea, I'll definitely do that with football and baseball going forward.

TONGO
02-23-17, 07:40 AM
I still say we should all pitch in and get a trophy that whoever wins the league gets to hold onto. Someone new wins, they send the trophy to them, but all league winners names are on the plaque. Just like the old tv show The League.

Yoda
02-23-17, 12:17 PM
I like the idea, but the trophy thing really requires that everyone be particularly close-knit and reliable, and we still have a bit of turnover, so I'm worried it would be over before it started. I think those work great if you have an especially dedicated, consistent year-to-year group of owners.

I did like the idea of springing for a simple trophy this year, though. Something fairly cheap, since I'm already buying the football one each year out of the goodness of my heart. :D

Yeah brother, when you first said $200 I was thinking maybe I way underestimated what trophies cost. I was thinking in the $40 range for a nice one. If you won the lottery we need to be having a different conversation. ;)

Yoda
03-03-17, 12:21 PM
I mean, it's ultimately up to you, obviously, but that feels so generous and over-the-top that I think I'll feel bad no matter who wins (unless it's you, I guess ). I'm also slightly worried it'll change the dynamic a little with real money at play, truth be told, since people already get a little worked up if they don't like a trade, with nothing tangible on the line at all.

I think just springing for a trophy (a nicer one, if you absolutely insist!) is more in the spirit of things. But again, your life/money.

Yoda
03-03-17, 12:43 PM
Oh, and just in case any of the new (or returning) people don't know, or didn't remember, a quick note about the scoring.

Obviously it's all there on the league site, so I'd encourage you to check it out so you can prepare accordingly, but the executive summary is that it's standard Roto, except we've added OBP and Holds, and changed Wins to Quality Starts.

Quick note: Yahoo's just announced a slight change to how the DL works: you can now add someone from waivers, or the FA pool, directly to your DL slot: https://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1/features

This makes a lot more sense than before, where you'd have to pick them up, then drop someone or move everything around. Just a heads-up, though.

There's no mock drafts that will be anywhere close to how random our draft will be. I keep ending up with the same guys. I'm convinced one of the top guys will filter down when we actually draft. If not I really like the 2 that are right at Yahoo's number 12 and 13 spots. So I'm basically stoked to be at 12.

I gotta agree. I remember one year I did a ton of mocks, and the ones i would always get everytime, on draft day I didnt get any.

Whoa! Dont take it that hard man. FBB isnt like FFB, the draft isnt that important. It helps, but theres so much talent and new talent where you can still win.

Well let me tell ya bout it! :)

I actually was having a very cinematic dream last night. It had all sorts to do with a Pixar movie, the movie theater, a new way of ahowing movies, and a finish to the dream which ran like the plotline of Dog Day Afternoon. Somewhere in the midst of the dream the movie theater screen was playing highlights from the Rays games last season, and on that big screen was Evan Longoria, and how they were talking it was his turnaround year. It was like a random insert, then the screen went on about the Pixar movie again.

When I woke I knew, I knew it was a sign :yup: So I nabbed him, maybe 1 rd earlier than he wouldve gone (idk), not necessary cause I already had Kyle Seager (hes on the block ;)), but you just cant let those moments pass without action. They may never come again.

Course it couldve just been a part of a dream.

I think I feel good about my draft. I stuck with the idea of taking someone on offense and then pitching every other turn, and followed thru. Balanced, and recognizable names on each side. Lot of guys with great upside.

Sean won Yahoos Best Drafter thingy, but the 2017 Naturals may surprise. ;)

C Wilson Contreras
1B Anthony Rizzo
2B Dustin Pedroia
3B Kyle Seager
SS Dansby Swanson (who?)
OF Nelson Cruz (I remember this guy ffrom 2 yrs ago when my squad was awesome)
OF Marcell Ozuna (Maybe he'll hit a full season now)
OF Carlos Beltran
UT Evan Longoria (dream motivated, possible "sign" * see post above)
UT Jacoby Ellsbury
BN Melky Cabrera
BN Ben Revere

SP Noah Syndergaard
SP Jon Lester
RP Seung Hwan Oh
RP Wade Davis (Always wanted Wade as a closer, former Ray who became elite after he became a closer)
SP Zack Grienke (maybe will turn it around)
BN Jeff Samardzija
BN Dallas Keuchel (maybe will turn it around too)
BN Joe Ross (great upside)
BN Nick Vincent
BN Hector Rondon (great for Ks)
BN Alex Cobb (sentimental hadda)

I probably could have targeted better pitchers on retrospect, more dominant in K's, but I didnt - oh well! The point is I do not have to be #1 or #2 in Ks to win it all, just strong. The mistake of chasing Ks from 2 years ag, which dismantled my awesome squad, will not occur again. Redemption fueled, striving for possibility, its "game-on" boys' ;)

Weirdly, I don't really see any teams that look clearly better (or worse) than the others. Lots of question marks everywhere.

If I had to pick one, I'd probably pick sean's as the best right now, though Yahoo liking it makes me less confident in that, since that's got a terrible track record.

seanc
03-20-17, 11:45 AM
Since Sean has a terrible track record the last few years I definitely wouldn't trust it.

I agree, league looks very balanced. No surprise with the Mofo league where we have very engaged owners. Should be a fun year.

Yup, I got him. I have no idea what to expect from him this year. The FanGraphs projections think REALLY highly of him this year so I thought I'd give him a shot.

Banknotes Harper
03-22-17, 04:29 PM
I agree that it looks like a lot of parity this year. Working Title and D&D maybe stood a bit to me, but it's easy to see any of us having good seasons.

Yeah I was going to post the same thing about the celebration jig antics of his and that teammate, great stuff. I wonder if they kept it up with all 47 homers. Even though it wasnt MLB pitching, he could be good for 30 HRs I think.

Does anyone know how to find the season projections? I've tried to put a few trades together and the only time I can find them is when I'm trying to evaluate a deal. They have a whole breakdown of how the trade will work out based on season projections but I can't find them on the regular Yahoo pages. Any of you guys know what I'm talking about?

Not quite it. I'm trying to find the page that has all the teams in it. Just like the standings after the season starts. I'm not sure if its a real thing... Like, how did they come up with the numbers? I can only locate it on the evaluate trade page and I'm wondering how they came up the projections.
