View Full Version : Am I the only one who views people's avatar as them?
I know this sounds weird, but when I see or am talking to anyone on these boards, I sort of picture them looking like the person in their picture for some reason...as long as it's a human. Even when someone changes their pic, I then identify them as the new pic. That's why some of the people that have girls, actresses, etc. for a pic, I thought were girls at first. Weird, huh?

There is no way in hell you can be as cool and awesome as your avatar, so, quit trying so hard to make us pretend you are. ;) :D
You can be my queen (to put it nicely), but not McQueen.:p
I even think everything Yoda says is somehow wiser.
As Citizen Rules said on another thread, he can't even watch Jake Gyllenhaal movies without thinking it's Sexy Celebrity!

Actually that's how I knew you were a girl, that and the line under your pic. Even though you told me that your pic was Joaquin Phoenix in Gladiator, it still looks like Jim Carrey to me. I looked it up, but only that pic in particular looks like Jim.

So true, it's maybe because he is so reliable!!
I also saw Camo as a murderer psycho when he had the Ice Truck Killer avatar :p. Not to forget about TUS serious face and Iro's "don't f*** with me" MGS's face, which I like to associate with his complex taste in movies (that he is truely honest with his feeling towards movies he doesn't like).
Miss Vicky's avatar is kind of complex though.
Other people like CiCi and Mr Minio without dot, have actress as avatars and they are actually men (I think)
I can always picture SC as his avatar too
In my case I just try to use the craziest or most luxurious avatar I can think of with my post-teenager mind.

Lagertha is the first female character I've had as an avatar, and I've already been thinking about changing it back to Strange (or to something else) for awhile now. I know a lot of people were surprised to find out I wasn't a dude before (which was sort of expected because it happens to me all the time), and I never thought that newer users might correctly assume I'm female first now. That's new for me, so maybe I should stick with her.

Not weird at all. Wait till you start reading posts and realize who it is without looking or have to do a double take because you thought it was someone else. JJ has been throwing me off with his Casablanca avatar for a couple weeks, I still think he is Cob. Citizen's new avatar will be throwing me off for sure.

This happens to me all the time even with my own posts vs. other peoples. The few times I've changed to a non Phoenix avatar I've confused myself. There was someone who joined (but I don't think stuck around) who was using the same image from Her as an avatar that I used to have and I'd get confused like "when did I say that?"
It's cool, I'm totally 1960s Marcello Mastroianni.

I do think the avatars we choose says something about us. To me your avatar is someone who is: strong but noble, graceful and feminine.
I have a hard time getting a mental picture of my fellow MoFos, and I'm influenced a lot by their avatars. Because let's face it, we can't hear each others voices, we can't see if a person is smiling or growling, so we fill in the blanks with our own image of that person.
... Citizen's new avatar will be throwing me off for sure. I'm changing that back today! It seems weird, even though it's a cool pic, I don't feel like Rita Hayworth!:p

It's nice to hope isn't it ;):D? I think you do identify with the avatar because you can't with the person behind it. You need that recognition. For instance I have a sneaking suspicion that TONGO isn't a gigantic ape worshipped by natives, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

I do really like the Lagertha avatar. Especially the way her hair blows in the wind. I let it go for as long as possible before the file size would be too big to upload here haha.
It just still feels strange to me because I'm so used to having male avatars in everything, because they tend to be the characters I like and gravitate towards (as is evidenced by all my Survivor characters being male haha). But I feel a strong connection with Lagertha, and I'd be very flattered if anyone equated me with her.
Also I sometimes do my hair up like her.

Ha, Ive had people relate me to a gorilla many times. The only one Ive had confusion with is CiCi who for some damned reason I keep thinking is a girl, hes a guy. If I didnt know otherwise I probably would now think Camo was black because of his Stringer Bell av (and a mighty fine av that is btw).

It gets very confusing for me when people change their avatars. I have to keep checking to see who wrote the post if I don't immediately recognize their avatar.

Apparently i'm thought of as a black, murdering psychopath thanks to my avatar. Which offends me to my core since only two of them are true.
On confusing people and/or yourself, i've done both but neither here i don't think. There was a message board i used to go on that allowed name changes every few months; most confusing thing ever, imagine SC with his avatar changes and the ability to change his username like five times a year; that was most of the active users  Actually members like Cricket or Swan would be alot more confusing, they don't change their avs as much as SC but they are always to completely different things, at least he has a Jake theme going on  On the confusing myself part: i swear i started reading Preacher and started using my Preacher avatar before i had heard about the show; i've still not watched any of it, but yah i kept seeing Jesse Custer avatars on other sites which is the main reason i changed mine haha.
And yeah i see all of you as your avatars, even after i've seen pictures of you. MV will always be Joaquin specifically the one she has now which i hope she changes soon because it's becoming nauseating, HK will always be some Drew Barrymore av and same with SC and Jake and Citizen and Orson. Also Cricket should get that Homer as a trucker av back because i only found out that's what he does for a living months after he had it and it's really brilliant.

I don't think it's weird at all. People's avatar is always somewhat of an extension of who they are and what they are like. Sometimes it is more literal and sometimes not at all, but it is rarely completely randomly selected in what I have learned.

I've had a bunch of different Orson avatars, some look too serious, some are more fun. I save them all and now that we have new people here, I can recycle them and use the pics over again:p
When I change it will probably be to Auntie Mame. For now the quokka I thought was the best avatar for a refugee because she's smiley and non threatening (but she might have a few live grenades in her pouch for fun or protection down the track). Auntie Mame, however, suits me because 1. I have short curly hair and 2. I am a super cool auntie to my nieces and nephews. And I always said when I finally grow up I want to be eccentric.
