View Full Version : Celebrities In Politics
There has been a strong underlying opinion of celebrities in politics, and that is they shouldnt be.
So lets say you Mr/Mrs MoFo were to become famous in the film/tv industry, would you shut up about what you believe then? :nope: Theyre just people folks, and get angry or excited just like all of us. Should we act like obedient dogs whenever they speak? No, but maybe theres a fear that many do, and it annoys our sense of justice. Nonetheless they have a voice as celebrities arent our dogs.
I wanted to make this thread as there are many celebrities tweets, news stories worth posting, and I dont want to derail discussions in other threads.
J.K. Rowling accuses Mike Pence of hypocrisy with a tweet quoting the Bible
On Friday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order barring immigrants from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the US for 90 days. The order also suspended all refugee admissions for 120 days.
The backlash has been monumental. Protesters took to streets across the US, and heads of state and titans of industry vocally rebuked Trump's actions.
While Trump took the bulk of criticism over the ban, J.K. Rowling took aim at his second-in-command, Vice President Mike Pence, drawing attention to the former Indiana governor's words in December 2015:

She followed up with a quote from the Gospel of Matthew:

Rowling faced some backlash of her own for the tweet; she responded to in a similarly sharp manner:

Whoa! I didnt know she was in that. Was that before she turned 18? I ask cause shes hugging Wesley Crusher. I think Wesley Crusher and Jar Jar Banks should be in a movie, and together theyre being hunted by a Predator. Id see it.

That makes no sense. So we shouldn't care what Martin Scorsese thinks about his movies?
Anyhow, I don't care about what celebrities have to say about politics and I mean it in the nicest way. They certainly have the right to speak their mind. I do prefer it when they don't make fools of themselves with silly, theatrical, crazy antics.
That makes no sense. So we shouldn't care what Martin Scorsese thinks about his movies?
I'd be much more interested in what he thinks of other movies, he'd never be anything other than modest about his own. Obviously i was exaggerating; i meant we shouldn't care what celebrities think politically, at least not more than out of curiosity.
Not a fan, and I think over time it's been counterproductive to their causes.

She was 23 when she guest starred on two episodes of STTNG (as Ensign Robin Lefler) - I think she and Wesley had a romantic thing going!
Not derailing - Ashley Judd just made a speech at the women's rally (i.e. another anti-Trump protest) that pretty much went viral, where she got all graphic about her menstrual cycle (this might have been the same protest where Madonna said she's thought about bombing the White House). It was nothing if not political.

This.
I have no problem with it. Celebrities are people too. If they can use their notoriety to create a legitimate conversation I don't see any harm being done. Although yeah, I don't think any of their attempts at dipping their hands in actual politics, and positions should be taken seriously unless they've always been directly involved with them for a long period of time. Lindsey Lohan wants to be president now, of all people. Sheesh.

Yeah, celebrities are people too and they have just as much right to mouth off about their views as anyone else. That said, it's not necessarily wise to do so, since there's the risk of backlash that could affect their careers.

My take:
First... yeah, everyone has a right to express themselves & voice their opinion.
Second... being an entertainer is the kind of job where success depends on appealing to a mass & diverse audience. It's just not a good idea to talk politics if you don't want to drive fans and potential fans away. These folks gained the enhanced forum & audience that most of us will never experience through their talents as entertainers, not as political spokespeople.
Same goes for if I was a hotel, restaurant or resort manager, an insurance salesman, etc. - I wouldn't discuss politics with customers or in an open forum where my views were broadcast out to potential customers (no less engage in shrieking out expletive-laced rants and threats of violence!).
It's fine for entertainers who are retiring or deciding to enter politics themselves, but if they're still in the business of being a celebrity, voicing politics publicly is just bad business.
And, as Dick Jones always said, "Good business is where you find it."

Then thats the same as saying we shouldnt care about what other people think. Seriously, just because someones a celeb shouldnt mean we shouldnt listen to them more, but we shouldnt dismiss them just because of that either.

Ask Piers Morgan.
Ask Piers Morgan.
Aw jeez, the billionaire jock sniffer extraordinaire. He probably is supporting Trump because he got such a rub off Celebrity Apprentice. That was the one time I saw Piers Morgan really show something, the power of his black book. Morgan was able to effortlessly contact rich celebrities and tycoons for donations throughout the season, and literally crushed Omarosa in the most decisive victory in Celebrity Apprentice history. Of course he couldnt shut up about it afterwards...

Most American celebrities simply repeat the obvious leftist or (in a few rare cases) rightist talking points, so their political opinion is not really that interesting to listen to, to be honest.
Some may have an interesting approach to things from time to time, but I can't really recall a specific example like that, right at this moment.
In Belgium, most of our truly beloved and legendary celebrities don't talk about politics or at least talk about it in a balanced way, instead of acting like they are preachers of the one and only truth. They are very conscious about how people will react to their political comments. I don't think that's an unhealthy attitude for a celebrity. It makes them think a few times before saying something utterly stupid, unoriginal or divisive.

Wanna quote this, because it seems to me this supersedes most of the abstract discussion about how people should use their fame. Even if someone isn't irked by someone using their fame as a platform, it should be obvious that the things that make celebrities famous are not conducive to understanding policy or grasping (let alone distilling) the arguments involved. In that regard, they might as well be any random person.
And actually, it's worse than that: celebrities are generally very wealthy, so they're insulated from the effects of the policies they advocate in ways a random person wouldn't be.
So the issue isn't that they have opinions or try to draw attention to things. The issue is why anyone would care.

It seems especially ironic given the context - apparently the best way to prove your opposition to public figures speaking about politics is to post footage of a completely different public figure speaking about politics.

Meryl Streep to Donald Trump: I Am the ‘Most Overrated’ Actress
http://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/AAmQiN9.img?h=574&w=1019&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f&x=547&y=218
Meryl Streep for president?
The Oscar-winning actress turned in a barn-burner of a speech Saturday night at a fundraiser for the Human Rights Campaign, assailing Donald Trump as bellicose and thin-skinned, mounting a rousing defense of LGBTQ freedoms, and bucking up a crowd that might have been otherwise dejected by America’s rightward turn towards conservatism. Streep argued that Trump’s election imperils gay rights, women’s rights, and other civil rights.
“If you think people got mad when they thought the government was coming after their guns, wait until they come and try to take away our happiness,” Streep said to a two-minute long standing ovation.
“We’re not going to go back to the bad old days of ignorance and oppression and hiding who we are,” she added.
As tears welled up and her voice cracked under the strain of the emotion, Streep said, “We owe it to the people who have died for our rights, and who have died before they even got their own.”
Streep, who received the gay rights organization’s Ally for Equality Award, said that critics of the new president have one thing to be grateful for.
“If we live through this precarious moment,” she said. “If [Trump’s] catastrophic instinct to retaliate doesn’t lead us to nuclear winter, we will have much to thank our current leader for. He will have woken us up to how fragile freedom is.”
At this year’s Golden Globes ceremony, Streep, while accepting a lifetime achievement award, delivered a blistering condemnation of Trump’s imitation of a reporter with disabilities. Without naming the president, Streep said that moment reminded her that “disrespect invites disrespect.” Trump later lashed out on Twitter, calling Streep an overrated actress. Once again, the two found common-ground.
“I am the most overrated and most over-decorated and currently — currently — I am the most over-berated actor…of my generation,” Streep said at the HRC dinner.
The dinner also honored comedian Seth Meyers and the cast and filmmaking team behind “Moonlight.”
Streep used her time at the dais to reflect on gay and transgender teachers who helped foster her love of the arts and of theater. At one point, she broke in song to treat the audience at the New York City gala to a rendition of the Emma Lazarus sonnet that lies at the base of the statue of liberty, saying the words were taught to her by a transgender teacher during a field trip.
Streep closed her speech with a call to arms for the people who may feel dispossessed and upset over Trump’s election.
“We have the right to live our lives, with God or without, as we choose,” Streep said. “There is a prohibition against the establishment of a state religion in our constitution, and we have the right to choose with whom we live, whom we love, and who and what gets to interfere with our bodies. As Americans, men, women, people, gay, straight, LGBTG. All of us have the human right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

I don't mind when they speak up as long as it is thought out. I actually mind when people in general try to stifle them as if they are not people with opinions. Usually, at least in my personal experience, most people I know who oppose them speaking out are politically quite uninformed which is ironic. It has just become sort of a talking point nowadays to simply say "celebrities should not be speaking out". A slogan of sorts.
A lot of them are walking enterprises who hire multiple people and have side companies of their own. So yes, many of them are very well aware of how the politics affects their business and their dollar as well as being aware of social issues. Not all of them live in a bubble or a vacuum completely unaware. That said, I still would do my own research and not trust them with some statistics unless they were directly involved in certain causes (ex. Angelina Jolie involvement with refugees, etc).
