View Full Version : TABOO, The Tom Hardy FX miniseries
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpMSEvdtyTw
Set in 1814, Taboo follows James Keziah Delaney, a man who has been to the ends of the earth and comes back irrevocably changed. Believed to be long dead, he returns home to London from Africa to inherit what is left of his father's shipping empire and rebuild a life for himself. But his father's legacy is a poisoned chalice, and with enemies lurking in every dark corner, James must navigate increasingly complex territories to avoid his own death sentence. Encircled by conspiracy, murder and betrayal, a dark family mystery unfolds in a combustible tale of love and treachery.
Taboo is created by Steven Knight with Tom Hardy and Chips Hardy, who is also the show’s consulting producer. Executive producers are Ridley Scott and Kate Crowe for Scott Free, Tom Hardy and Dean Baker for Hardy Son & Baker, and Steven Knight, with Timothy Bricknell producing. Taboo is directed by Kristoffer Nyholm (Eps. 1-4) and Anders Engström (Eps. 5-8), and reunites Hardy and Knight for their third collaboration following Locke and Peaky Blinders.
Taboo airs January 2017 and is produced by Scott Free London and Hardy Son & Baker for FX Networks.

What sort of black magic you workin' with sam? I didn't see this available until tonight, but I'm set to record. The cast looks great, which includes the High Sparrow. Hardy and the gritty-grumble-mumble delivery is one of my favorite ways to listen to dialogue.

looking forward to hearing what you think, samoan.
Just finished episode 2 with Hardy's character collecting a small team for the coming onslaughts. Really enjoying the cinematic work and how everything is merely hinted at. Definitely gets the curiosity a serious jab.
Just saw the first episode. Make sure to watch it in subtitles so you dont miss anything being said.
Good stuff. Very authentic, gothic, and spooky. I think the "mystery" is somewhat obvious, but hopefully I could be wrong, I wont state my guess in case Im right. There are only two actors I recognize, Tom Hardy & Jonathan Pryce. Whoever directed this should have directed Alan Moores In Hell, because unlike the Hughes Brothers they nailed how filthy, disgusting, and still somewhat medieval it was back then.
Im hooked. :)

totally agree, the setting is VERY well done. And episode 2 draws you in even more.
And yeah, subtitles WOULD help lol

I instantly recognized Stephen Graham, Franka Potente and Michael Kelly. Never seen her before, but, I'm already not a fan of Oona Chaplin. Aside from that, the series is off to an excellent start. Hardy is awesome.

Sickening Christine. I felt like kicking the tv! Cant wait to see more of him mind you.
Im watching episode 3 now, the BBC version (I dont know if its airing the same time as the FX version). To all those that havent seen it, watch this. Its production is top tier, acted brilliantly, but the true draw is its a drama with true intrigue, a rarity in todays television.
Recognizing more actors now than I did the first episode as theyve introduced more characters, all of which serves a purpose to the storyline.
TONGO dialed in :)
I've got this on my watchlist. In which episode is Mr Hardy n00d? I want to check out his...urmmm...tattoos.

How is FX getting away with dropping all those F-bombs in every episode? (I've watched all the current episodes On Demand, so perhaps the F-bombs aren't audible in the aired versions. Yes? No?)
Having binged these first half dozen episodes in the past two days, I can say that it's almost cloyingly bleak and dark -- literally. London is perpetually muddy, ugly, filthy, and sad. And although the story is mostly compelling and Hardy and the others are all marvelous (is Jonathan Pryce in everything all of a sudden?), I'm almost glad I'm caught up and now can only watch one episode a week. It was getting depressing.
Not sure how I feel about the odd supernatural elements (or hints of them, at this point) or even the title of the show itself (what taboo(s) are we talking about here? incest? cannibalism? others?)... but I'm still watching.
Oh, and you'll also recognize Oona/Zilpha as Mrs. Rob Stark from Game of Thrones. :)

Finished it last night. Loved every filthy, muddy, tortured minute of it!
poor Zilpha, I was hoping she'd survive. Poor Brace, denied passage on the boat. Poor Cholmondeley, and how touching that little scene with him all burnt and Godfrey in his Molly dress

Yeah, just what horrible deeds did he get up to in Africa? I don't think there'll be a second series. It's been panned by a lot of critics and I read that it's lost quite a lot of dosh for Hardy and his dad.

christine Oh no!!! They hated it? I feel like it was just gearing up, and yes! What exactly did he get up to in Africa, and I wanted to see more of his witchy side, not in a Salem kind of way though... it's worth a second series.

I've read a few reviews which either didn't like the supernatural hints, or which laughed at Delaney's abilities of escaping death in so many ways. I've just followed up the report I read about him losing money, but I wouldn't give that any credibility at all now I see the source (an anonymous insider talking to The Sun....)
I've just liked the characters and the settings, and while it is melodramatic, so was Dickens!

The supernatural/black magic were my least favourite parts to be honest. I think it could have done without it. Didn't spoil it though.

Guess we'll have to wait till Taboo Too!
That should definitely be the title.
Just finished it.
Have to agree something felt missing, I feel the "Ghost" that killed Winter will be touched upon in the future. I think this is a sign that the series is finding its legs, and it will improve as time goes on.
I like the black magic element. Back then, magic had a scary bite about it, and was in the hearts & minds of most men. In a series like this it has a place.
Curious if season 2 will be just about the journey, and that could be a brutality in itself. More flash backs are sure to come.
Recognized/realized another actor.....he played Al Capone from Boardwalk Empire....this shows how strong the costuming was done in this series.

I haven't read any of the thread, because I'm only my 3rd episode (which just so happens to be the 4th). I'm kinda lost, because I don't really know what is suppose to be known and what is not. I think my dvr was set for "save at most 7 episodes" and the on-demand FX starts with episode 2.
I know that Delaney came back from Africa and his pa is dead and he is picking up the pieces. His stake in the Nootka Sound is what everything centers around. He is also an entrepreneur in the field of human waste collection.
It's kinda neat and I like the production, but I'm a little mixed on the supernatural vs. business espionage stuff. Overall its cool seeing someone like Hardy in a tv show. I did have to turn on the closed captions to make sense of a bunch of the dialogue.

So many F's, they had plenty to give.
It's great and I'm at a point in my life where I love period stuff. The story is a mess ... entertaining ... but it is hard to believe, even for something with a supernatural twinge. Carnivale was easier to believe :D .
The best part about this show was finding out Tom Hardy’s dad is named Chips.
