Ok MoFos, let's start off 2017 with a good one!
The rules:
You can nominate any film under 180 minutes long as long as it's not a previous Hall of Fame winner. Also, try to avoid previous nominations. Sequels should not be nominated unless they work as stand alone films.
Send me a PM with your nomination by next Saturday night 1/7. The reveal will be on Sunday, one*week from today. Do not reveal your nomination before then. Make sure you nominate a film that is available to watch by reasonable means. If a movie can only be obtained via Netflix DVD, not everyone will be able to watch it. Try to find a working link to the movie beforehand.
You must watch every film in it's entirety and post your thoughts in this thread. Upon watching all of the films, you will then send me a PM with your ranking.
If you join and can't finish for any reason, you will be killed.
Have fun!

I am nominating one of the most beloved classics of all-time. A movie that helped kick off my own interest in seeking out older films and good films in general. It has what is probably the best script of all-time with the best dialogue of all-time. There is never a dull piece of dialogue, and is endlessly quotable.

Deadline-March 10th
I'm in, just gonna take a few days to think about a nomination. Will send it before the deadline.
I'll leave it to closer to the deadline to decide if i'm in or not. I want to join (and recently always end up joining haha) but i'm going to be pretty busy and i'd like to watch some Sci-Fi and 2016 films. Think i know what i'll nominate if i do.

Don't worry about the Sci-Fi or 2016 films. Those are unimportant.

Nope is a yep!
Nope there's a second Animated Short HOF coming soon; just the same as the Looney Tunes one except you can nominate any as long as they are 10 minutes or under - Disney, Tom and Jerry, Fleischer, etc. Just saying coz i know you liked the last one.

I think I might join if that's ok. I would like to get back into HoFs. No offense Nope, but I'm going to watch your movie last in case you drop out again...you've dropped out of the 9th Hof, 50s Part 2 Hof, WWII Hof, so the odds are higher for you not being able to complete this.

I might be in, but first I have to figure out what the hell I'm going to nominate.

I don't think I'll join, or another family member will probably die. Seems to be the norm when I decide to commit to something. :data:
I might follow from the sidelines though. Hope y'all have fun and good luck hosting, cricket

that IS the hard choice, isn't it? Down to the wire there were two: one well known, another lesser known and ended up going with the former since I thought it was the better of the two.
Same position here. Trying to figure out if one of the five I've come up with will be kept in on the basis of few of you having seen it. At the same time, I'm hesitant to pick one of the very famous ones I have, because I know almost all of you have seen it before.

The film I was considering nominating may not be readily available for people to watch. Apparently it was removed from Netflix streaming back in September in the countries it was available in, and may or may not be available through Netflix DVD in the US (a page for it comes up in search results, but since I'm not American it won't let me view it).
The only place I've seen it for streaming is to rent it through Google Play for $5 or on iTunes for twice as much. We don't have access to Amazon Prime Streaming here (though apparently some Amazon Originals are now available), but it is available on there for $5 as well, or free if you are a subscriber to Fandor, whatever that is.
I can't seem to think of another film to nominate, though I'll try to come up with something today. If not, I might just watch and comment on other people's nominations if that's fine with everyone.

I wrote off one of the films I was thinking of for this reason. Also it was a bit long and I didn't have time to watch it again before deciding on a nomination.
Speaking of things I thought about nominating, I also kind of wanted to nominate something Canadian for once, but Cronenberg was the only Canadian director that came to mind. I think his films would be much better suited for a horror or sci-fi HoF, where his brand of body horror is likely to go over much better than in just a general HoF.
Also I can never get the names (and plots) of Cronenberg's films straight for some reason, other than the really odd ones like eXistenZ and Naked Lunch.

A nice variety of films!
Other than my nom, I've only seen Casablanca, City of Lost Children (which I've been meaning to watch again for awhile), and Y Tu Mama Tambien. I tried to watch Grand Budapest Hotel but turned it off because I didn't like it at all, but I'll definitely give it a fair second chance.
For those who have never heard of my nomination before (which I assume is all of you), Barbara is a film that takes place in a rural East German town in the early 80s. The titular character had applied for an Exit Visa to West Germany, and as a result is being punished and monitored by the Stasi. It's a drama, and is rather slow moving, so you might want to be prepared for that going in.
What's this crap about movies being "too violent"? I like violence.
this is a "different" kind of violent though..but i can tell you all now:
(too violent) Irreversible (too off beat) U turn (lost in translation) ****ing Åmål (too obscure) el crimen del padre amaro
but now im thinking of more movies that i forgot about of course
Withnail and I - Glad this was nominated, heard alot about it and it is one of the few left on my MoFo 100 list.
The Grand Budapest Hotel - Not one of my fave Wes films but really good anyway. I'm not gonna rewatch this as i only watched it a few months back.
Casablanca - Don't like it quite as much as everyone else but it is pretty great. Don't have to see this again as i remember it well but i still might not sure yet.
Never Let Me Go - Never heard of this, looking forward to it.
Romper Stomper - I'll rewatch this as i haven't seen it in years. Didn't like it much at the time hopefully that has changed.
Sanshiro Sugata - Awesome, a 40's Kurosawa that i haven't seen
The City of Lost Children - Don't think i've heard of this. Looking forward to it.
Barbara - Again not heard of this, looking forward to it.
Hiroshima Mon Amour - Awesome, been meaning to see more Resnais.
The Man From Nowhere - Gonna leave this to last, me and Royale have struck up an early bond but he's still pretty new so i'd rather not watch something that may get excluded, no offence. Looks good though.
Y Tu Mama Tambien - My nom. No doubt some of you will hate it but i don't really care i love it.
U-Turn - never seen it looking forward to it.
Joe - Great film. Not sure if i'm gonna rewatch it or not.
Really interesting choices . Think i'll watch Withnail tonight.

This is a duplicate of a post I made a couple days ago in the rate the last movie thread-
Casablanca (1942)
5
https://robertmatzen.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/casablanca3.jpg
I had seen this 3 or 4 times over the years, and while I thought it was a very good movie, I never thought it was anything more than that. I watched it again for the eventual 40's countdown, and I'm glad I did because it all clicked for me this time.
In a nutshell, I now look at this movie as a masterpiece. Bogart and Bergman are simply amazing, and the supporting actors all own the roles that they're playing. It's got the story, the music, subtle and sudden laugh out loud humor, and it's all done with so much class. It's got beautiful direction and atmosphere to spare. The nightclub setting is so intimate, and I find that amazing because the inside shell of the building appears cold, but it's warmed up with perfect lighting and decor. Every detail from the clothes to the candles to the chandeliers are top notch. There are many great movies, and each one would be fortunate to have a historically great moment or line. In this movie, it feels like they come at you non-stop, one right after another. I have no clue why it took so long for me to finally appreciate this movie properly.

Sanshiro Sugata was Kurosawa's first film? Interesting, probably looking forward to that most.

This looks like a good class of nominations. I am most looking forward to Joe, because I don't think I've ever heard of it... and it's a cricket nom, so it's bound to be interesting at least.
Withnail and I - My nom. Best movie I saw last year, a masterpiece!
The Grand Budapest Hotel - Wes is kind of a hit and miss for me, and while I find some qualities in this movie, it's not one of my favs by Wes. Not gonna rewatch this because it's fresh on my mind.
Casablanca - The absolute favourite to win this. I'll probably rewatch it not because I don't remember but because it's freaking Casablanca!!!
Never Let Me Go - Never heard of this, looking forward to it.
Romper Stomper - Never heard of this, looking forward to it.
Sanshiro Sugata - It's Kurosawa, and that's enough for me to be looking forward to watch it.
The City of Lost Children - Never heard of this, looking forward to it.
Barbara - Never heard of this, looking forward to it.
Hiroshima Mon Amour - This film is part of my Top 100. It's not an easy watch and I don't think it'll do good on a HoF but it's a beautiful beautiful film!
The Man From Nowhere - Never heard of this, looking forward to it.
Y Tu Mama Tambien - It's one of my gf's favourite films and it's on my watchlist for a long time now, so it'll be one of the first ones I see!
U-Turn - Never heard of this, looking forward to it.
Joe - Never heard of this, looking forward to it.

What did you think up Y Tu Mama Tambien?
I definitely need to watch it again because I haven't seen it since...2003 or maybe 2004 at the latest.
I remember it being like one of those road trip films, but with undeniably Mexican landscapes and characters. I mostly remember the buzz about it being too explicit, and that's part of what made me interested in watching it.
I feel like more of it will come back to me as I watch it (which is usually the case), and I'm definitely looking forward to watching it again.
im good with starting with Y tu.. aswell Neiba if we want to try and watch some in somewhat the same order-- for discussions sake.

Withnail & I: Was already on my watchlist because I've heard nothing but great things.
The Grand Budapest Hotel: This is the movie that finally turned me on to Wes Anderson. A lot of quirky characters and beautiful to look at.
Casablanca: The early favorite, but it only takes a couple low scores to knock it out.
Never Let Me Go: Saw this several months ago and liked it a lot. Going to watch it again.
Romper Stomper: Had this on my top 200 I did shortly after joining this site. It's been at least 10 years since seeing it last, but I'm sure it'll still be a favorite.
Sanshiro Sugata: Was already on my 40's watchlist.
The City of Lost Children: Saw this not long ago and it's not my type of movie. It looks amazing and anyone into fantasy should love it.
Barbara: Never heard of this one before.
Hiroshima Mon Amour: I believe this made the 50's list. I think it's a movie that's hard to fully grasp with 1 viewing. Unique with beauty and power.
The Man From Nowhere: Already In my watchlist and the movie I'm most looking forward to.
Y Tu Mama Tambien: I watched this a long time ago. I know it was good, but I need another viewing.
U-Turn: Saw this when it came out and was disappointed. It should be my kind of movie; looking forward to trying it again.
Joe: My nom, and I found it thanks to Mark. Wikipedia says that Archie Bunker was inspired by the lead character. It's a movie that I believe is relevant today.
Hope you guys like it. I'm probably wrong but i think there's a decent chance you will Topsy.
i cant really make out what the first poster is...is it a horror?
It's not that explicit in my opinion. Don't know if i've been horribly desensitized or something haha but i didn't think it was. There is one scene towards the end that people may be referring to but i don't think it's that bad personally.
Hope you guys like it. I'm probably wrong but i think there's a decent chance you will Topsy.

Never Let Me Go, it's sci fi, yet it doesn't feel like sci fi.
It's not a movie that its story is meant to be taken literally, the story is more of a grid work on which human emotions can be explored. In effect it takes place in an alternative reality, if you will.

Haha, no offense taken. Just joined to have a wider array of movies and to share a movie that I thought most of you haven't seen yet..... Hopefully.

I live an hour from their and I've never been to the drive through safari. Don't go to six flags too much in general. The only thing I really take advantage of in Jersey is the historical parks, mainly dealing with the revolution. Other than that, I just watch movies and brewery hop

Use a rental. We filled the car with bananas and the baboons went nuts. One of them took a dump on the bumper. The roller coasters there are sick too. Back at the hotel, I went to the bar to watch the Sunday night game and I ended up in the middle of a porn convention after my wife went back to the room. Jersey is crazy!

As i said i was really glad this was nominated since i've heard nothing but good things and it is one of the few i have left on the MoFo 100 list. I've heard of this alot but never really been sure what it was about exactly, all i really knew was that it is British, it stars Richard E Grant who is a guy that is sometimes on panel shows over here and that it is supposed to have a really good script. That i'd definitely agree with; it was nuts how many lines i'd heard before i think it is a highly quoted film here as i know i had heard some of it before. It's hilarious at times, Withnail in particular he's constantly drunk and ill and annoyed, a real grumpy a-hole character but he is a joy to watch anyway. I is comparatively soft-spoken and generally more normal and likable. They had great chemistry but i'm still not sure why they were friends exactly, it felt like it was for survival more than anything since they were two poor, messed up losers. I thought the first half hour was just okay, it really picks up when they get to the countryside. Being from London they obviously aren't used to the country lifem and they clash with the locals and get it various crazy situations that they can barely handle. One of my favourite parts was when Withnail was terrified that the guy in the pub was coming to kill them, attempting to sleep with I with a shotgun in hand . Withnails reaction when it turned out to be Monty killed me. Speaking of Monty he was pretty great too, i loved his interactions with I who was clearly terrified of him. Jesus that "i know you're not asleep boy" scene haha. Really liked the ending, it was weirdly sad. Really enjoyed the music and the simple look of the film too.
Good nom Neiba i really enjoyed this. Going to watch Hiroshima Mon Amour and maybe something else tomorrow.

spoilers
I was the most excited about this one as its one that i`ve wanted to see for a while.. (i havent been able to find it years and Cricket finds it in like 2 min smh :lol:)
With Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal as 2/3 of the cast it must be good. I did really like it,but not as much as i thought i would-i do however think i would have loved it had i seen it a couple of years ago. It is a bit of coming of age story and maybe that doesnt resonate aswell with me anymore.I thought the acting was great,i love the normal clothing,no overdone lighting or colouring, all in all very natural, like i like it!
Luisita, sometimes she didnt look all that much older than them but then sometimes she looked alot older than them-which felt a bit creepy.I dont know if her age was ever revealed but if it was i missed it.I also found it a bit strange they wanted to have sex with their cousins girlfriend, different social codes for different places maybe- but i wouldnt go out with someone who had gone out with someone i only knew by polite small talk even. Also the way they speak is alot more free than here lmfao
I first thought the things being said about the girlfriends was because Gael saw them together and wanted to get even, which i guess is what he did,but i thought he lied about it. I was a bit disappointed by them treating eachother so badly. But my favourite scenes were the arguments about it-also the last night they went out together because that kiss...I genuinely went WHATDA#"¤%¤ and it felt akward, which is what made the next scene amazing. i could really feel the morning-after-anxiety   But it was a really nice scene nonetheless... my problem is that im not sure what it is im supposed to be taking away from it? drunken fun/mistakes/something that was lurking beneath the surface?

Romper Stomper
Spoiler Alert!
I mainly joined this competition to watch new movies and expand my horizon of genres I wouldn't normally watch. Having said that, I was looking forward to this film because I had never heard of it before today.
Romper Stomper is an Australian drama directed by Geoffrey Wright. The film mainly focuses on Hando and his merry band of neo-nazis who parade around Melbourne like they own the place, harassing and beating any Vietnamese-Australian they come across. At the beginning of the film Hando meets Gabrielle the day after her father had her junkie boyfriend thrown in jail. They show the group partying it up like a bunch of unneutered, barbaric mongrels, who only know how to party, f***, fight and live in squalor. After harassing the Vietnamese enough, they decide to fight back to the point where they are overrun and their "Base" is destroyed and half their comrades are put in the hospital. They eventually find a new "Base" by overrunning an abandoned warehouse. Throughout the rest of the movie, it shows Hando and his relationship with Gabrielle and his best friend Davey fall apart due to his unpredictable behavior and his seriousness to the "Cause". Overall, I found the movie to be intense and reminded me of A Clockwork Orange but in 1980 even though the film was shot in 1992.

Barbara (2012)
Dir. Christian Petzold
Starring: Nina Hoss, Ronald Zehrfeld, Rainer Bock
Barbara is a very restrained and quiet drama set in 1980 East Germany that focuses on atmosphere to tell a fictional yet authentic feeling story about one woman's experience in a closely monitored police state where neighbours, co-workers, and even family members kept a close eye on each other to inform on any potential defectors or Western influences.
The film revolves around the titular character, Barbara, who is removed from her position in a prestigious East Berlin hospital and relocated to a rural town on the Baltic Sea as punishment for filing an Exit Visa. Barbara wishes to distance herself from her new peers partly in fear that they'll inform on her to the Stasi, who are already monitoring her closely, but also because she doesn't want to become attached to the people she intends to leave behind as she carefully plans an escape to West Germany.
Mistrust and paranoia seem to permeate the screen, and in my opinion it's much more effective and credible than the more popular and acclaimed The Lives of Others (2006). Unlike that film, Barbara is not concerned with focusing on the morality of the oppressive state or with the circumstances surrounding the privileged few, but rather with the lives of normal citizens and their everyday struggles.
This film probably won't interest everyone, but I'm still looking forward to reading what everyone thinks about it and its cinematography, which I'll wait for more people to see before I talk about it in depth.

The Grand Budapest Hotel
To tell you the truth, The Grand Budapest Hotel was not one of the movies I was looking forward to, due to having seen it once before all the way through and here and there as I flipped through channels indecisively looking for a film to appeal to me.
The Grand Budapest Hotel is a 2014 Adventure Comedy film written and directed by Wes Anderson set in the town of Nebelsbad in the Republic of Zubrowka (A Fictional Town in Europe somewhere). Through the entirety of the film, I always found myself, gazing with a ****-eating grin on my face due to the lack of plot but what was made up with beautifully set scenes, an amazing cast I haven't seen in years, Ralph Fiennes (one of my favorite actors who I don't get to see in films enough) and a script that has you in a trans due to the elegant vocabulary and witty conversation of the uniquely chosen characters. At the beginning of the film you are introduced to a narrator who is telling a story and then hands the reigns over to another narrator who he met in a past to tell a story about the new narrator's past. Once the introduction of the narrator is finally over, you are introduced to M. Gustave (played by Ralph Fiennes), a concierge of the hotel and Zero (played by Tony Revolori), a newly appointed Lobby Boy in training. At first you are introduced to both of their rolls in the Hotel and learn quickly that M. Gustave is probably the best concierge of all time but does this by preying on senile old woman by performing various sexual acts for their pleasure (even by the end of the film, I wasn't sure if Gustave did this to be manipulative or just because he liked 90 year old woman). For the rest of the film you are taken on a fast paced adventure of indecisive decisions, quirky, yet, quick witted conversation and watch strangers grow a relationship into a strong bond. Overall, I thought the film had a horrible plot but was made up with everything else due to Wes Anderson (one of the last directors of our time that has complete creative control of his films) and Ralph Fiennes witty dialogue.

There's not really any focus on the Stasi officers in Barbara, but their influence and presence is always felt. So it does share more similarities with the first half of The Lives of Others than it does with the second half.

It's a good mix, old, new, classics and more unknown. Have seen Grand Budapest, but that's the only one besides my nom (no, I haven't seen Casablanca, such a bad moviebuff I am:p). This wiil be interesting, and I'm looking forward to it.
Btw, welcome Royal. Hope you'll like it here. I'm kind of new to this whole thing too, but this is a great gang of people, so I think you'll like it here.

Hey Clazor, glad to see that you liked your first HoF enough to join another:)
I'm looking forward to your nom, The City of Lost Children (1995) I've been interested in it for a long while, so now I will final see it:p
Also, with my nom you can choose between french and english audio. Listening to Ron Pearlman speaking french (phonetically, he couldn't speak the language so he just trained in the sound of it) is something to behold, so I urge you to go subbed if possible (plus, you don't get the annoying out of sync lips with sub). Besides, it brings something to the movie when the characters speak in a agressive french rather than english. Maybe it's something to do with the sound of the language, but a pissed off frenchman sounds much more enjoyable to my ears than a pissed off englishman/american.
Just my opinion though.

Thank you, glad to see there's some interest. Acutally, since the 11th HoF I've been in another five, and am currently in this one, the universal/hammer HoF, the animated short HoF and the 40s HoF. Technically I'm done with the 40s, but it's still going on. Same with the full length animation HoF.
Let's just say I'm keeping busy. I'm likely going to have to leap-frog between the three current ones, so my rate might be a bit slow at first. Oh, well, you gotta do what you gotta do :)

Just to show you how out of touch I am with things around here, I didn't realize that the 11th was over by now!
I think I may follow along with this one the best that I can. I will print out the list of films now and see if I can pick any of them up from the library today. This is a HoF where I have actually seen less of the nominations. This one wouldn't be full of rewatches for me.
I have definitely seen:
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Casablanca (truth be told, I am one of the few who is not that big of a fan of the film - I don't know what it is that it never made too much of an impression on me - maybe it is the ending - yeah, I've had issues with the ending ever since I first saw it years ago :p)
Y Tu Mama Tambien
U-Turn
I think I've seen:
The City of Lost Children
Hiroshima Mon Amour
Withnail and I
I've definitely not seen:
Never Let Me Go
Romper Stomper
Sanshiro Sugata
Joe
Barbara
The Man From Nowhere
Like I said, I will print a list out now and see what I can get watched.
Her nominated by Miss Vicky won the 11th by the way.
Watching Hiroshima Mon Amour soon then hopefully either Never Let Me Go or Sanshiro Sugata after it.

It is Midnight Run, and it is a great movie.
Sweet, more film! And of course, the more the merrier. Welcome back, Vamp!

It's been quite a few years for me so I'll watch it again.
As i said i'm not watching Budapest again since i watched it not long ago so here's the short post about it when i did. To be honest i think i was initially a bit over-enthusiastic i don't think i like it as much as this post indicates but it is very good.
The Grand Budapest Hotel
http://i64.tinypic.com/az6hcp.jpg
Glad to have finally watched this i loved it as i expected. This was visually spectacular like most Wes Anderson films, fantastic use of colour and gorgeous sets. As charming and quirky as all Wes films but with a slight darker tone than usual that i wasn't expecting. Ralph Fiennes was really amazing, i think he probably should have won the oscar out of those that were nominated at least. It wasn't just him though, the film had an amazing cast overall possibly the best this decade, i think everybody in it did a good job. Overall it was a very fun, funny film that looked stunning and had an interesting story and characters. Pretty much the standard for Wes Anderson
I've actually thought about nominating Midnight Run before but always decided against it because comedies don't always do that well in these. So it will be interesting seeing where it finishes. I first saw it when i was about 11 and loved it then one time about five or six years ago i stumbled upon it on youtube and thought there was no chance it would hold up but it did and i now own it and have seen it tonnes. It's probably my third go to comedy when i'm in the mood after My Cousin Vinny and The Burbs.
It's such a weird combo that shouldn't really be anything more than an alright watch but i really do think it is great. DeNiro as a bounty hunter and the dude from Beethoven as a white-collar criminal, it's kinda like Planes, Trains and Automobiles except DeNiro is trying to bring Grodin into the police and things keep going wrong, the mafia and another bounty hunter are after him, etc. Hilarious film.
Casablanca[/B] (truth be told, I am one of the few who is not that big of a fan of the film - I don't know what it is that it never made too much of an impression on me - maybe it is the ending - yeah, I've had issues with the ending ever since I first saw it years ago :p)

I'm glad this was nominated because I had a completely false perception of it. I saw it before, long ago, but I never thought it was supposed to be good so I didn't take it seriously, and plus I was still drinking a lot then. I always thought of this movie a bit like Showgirls actually; I had no idea it was so well regarded. It turns out that it's an extremely well made movie with a lot of heart and soul. It's a great road movie with a good sense of humor mixed in with some harsh realities. I liked the three main characters. The boys come off a little as punks at first, but then you can tell they're good kids by how they act towards strangers. I felt for the girl right away. I think it's evil and cruel for a man to cheat on his wife, so just that part of it was powerful for me. It's beautifully filmed as well. It was a nice surprise and an excellent movie.

Withnail and I - I remember seing this one a couple years ago and really disliking it. From my memory it was an uninteresting movie about 2 drunks rambling, but my taste has changed since then so I'll give it another shot.
The Grand Budapest Hotel - I saw this one in the theater and I liked it a lot. It's my second favorite from Anderson after The Royal Tenembaums. I own it on Blu ray and give it a rewatch.
Casablanca - I rewatched this one about a month ago and absolutely loved it. I'll write a review tomorrow, it might even be higher then my own pick.
Never Let Me Go - Never heard of this, looking forward to it.
Romper Stomper - Never heard of this film, I don't really like Russell Crowe, but I'll give it a shot
Sanshiro Sugata - I love Kurosawa and I have seen about 15 of his films, that's one I never heard of si I'm looking forward to it.
The City of Lost Children - Never heard of this, it looks good.
Barbara - This film is on netflix, I watched it about 2 years ago and remember liking it quite a bit. It was a very subtle movie that aimed to be realistic and subtle in the way it tells it's story. I don't remember it that well so I'll have to rewatch it.
Hiroshima Mon Amour - One of my all time favorite, beautiful film both beautiful in it's script and its visuals.
The Man From Nowhere - I remember loving this action film, but it's been more then 3 years since I've watch it, I'll borrow it at the library and have some fun.
Y Tu Mama Tambien - I own this on DVD' great film containing one of the hottest MILF i've ever seen.
U-Turn - Never heard of this one!
Joe - I almost watched it during the 70's countdown, but never got to it, it looks good.
So glad you liked it Cricket . Was nervous that you wouldn't, that whole beach part you used the picture from is beautiful.
Hey Camo, you spelled "with" wrong.
Forgot to say earlier that i didn't realize you were saying Royale was me and i thought i had somehow spelled With wrong in Withnail And I :rotfl:
the spanish one lol...the portugese one is a parody right?
No, it's a modern adaptation of the book. It's not a very good movie but has a lot of naked scenes with one of the hottest portuguese actresses, so of course I went to watch it in the cinema when I was like 15 :p
Thanks for the warm welcome Ed,as everyone else has (besides the fact I was accused of being someone's duplicate, LMAO)
And I wrote my review on yours, I'm eager to read what you have write about mine!
Just to sort this out so you aren't eternally confused here . We had a big thing were a member created various alt accounts to play Survivor, so when you first approached me (a regular Survivor player) about getting an av then expressed interest in joining Survivor as soon as you joined it really made it look like you were an alt of mine or someone elses haha. Withnail & I (1987)
Dir. Bruce Robinson
Starring: Paul McGann, Richard E. Grant, Richard Griffiths
What happens when a couple of out of work actors coming down off a bender convince a rich uncle to lend them his rundown cottage for a little down-to-earth vacation in the countryside? The answer is certainly not the rest and relaxation they were looking for. Withnail & I is a witty, dark comedy with cult-status that I'm surprised I'd never even heard of before.
I was a little lukewarm on this at the very start, but as the film went on it became progressively funnier. Grant and McGann both give great performances and have excellent chemistry on screen. I really enjoyed all of the scenes out in the country, and was highly entertained by Monty's flirtations with “I”. The film is a clever farewell to a bygone decade, with a sombre reminder (that is still relevant) that adulthood eventually catches up to us.
I'm glad this was nominated, because I might not have come across it on my own. It's definitely a film I'll be watching again (and probably quoting) in the future.

Jesus that "i know you're not asleep boy" scene haha.
My room mate walked at the start of this scene, and wondered, with a very puzzled expression, what the hell I was watching.
Then he asked if that was some guy from Harry Potter, to which I responded "I don't know, you're the one that's seen them". A quick google search later, and yes, Uncle Monty is some guy from Harry Potter, in case any one else was curious.

LMAO, well I'm glad I could raise suspicion
Hiroshima Mon Amour
http://i63.tinypic.com/2qc18oz.jpg
So glad this was nominated. The only Resnais film i've seen is Night and Fog which i think is the best documentary (although not my favourite) i've ever seen and one of the best films overall. So i've been meaning to get to more from him, Last Year At Marienbad was what i was planning on watching but i actually heard somewhere that that is more difficult than this; not sure if that's true or not of course but i've always heard this described as one of the best starting points with Resnais. My god this film is beautiful, the visuals, the music, the script, pretty much everything. This isn't exactly an easy watch i mean it is about Hiroshima; but the way Emmanuelle Riva describes it is hauntingly beautiful. Haunting being the key word because she really got under my skin at times. I only realized after this was done that it was Riva, for those who were in the 10th Hall of Fame you may remember that i thought Amour was a very well made film but it was an extremely tough watch for me, regardless though i thought Riva was outstanding and i'd say the same here, amazing actress. I think this would be an excellent (although depressing) companion piece to Night and Fog as it is pretty similar with the obvious difference of this being fictional, particularly at the parts where we are going through the hospitals at Hiroshima or various places in the city with Riva narrating over a really hypnotic score. It's a very simple yet super effective way of telling a story; the part where we see survivors coming out the water then all sitting together in some sort of shelter all bloodied was a bit tough to watch, with this being fictional Resnais has a bit more room to jazz up the dialogue compared to Night and Fog which is alot more of a straight forward presentation, this brings a whole new dimension to it. The thing is and this is a positive in my mind at times i wasn't really concentrating on the dialogue because the visuals were so striking, i guess for a fluent French speaker like PG this would probably be the case too because he obviously doesn't need to read but i honestly don't think this was a negative for me, Riva's beautiful voice had a weird soothing effect on me that coupled with the visuals made this such a moving experience whether i was reading everything she was saying or not. Not gonna lie i did look away a couple of times too, one part in particular i was watching through my hands when presumably these doctors open this womans eyelid and i just couldn't keep watching in case they did anything to her eyeball which is something i just cannot take.
This did make me sad and especially pretty angry at times. Don't want to start any debates about the use of atomic weapons, but the prevailing opinions of most historians i've read at least (i suppose western-biased ones but anyway) seems to be that Hiroshima at least was necessary some say that Nagasaki wasn't but then again Japanese leadership did have three days to surrender between the two and didn't. The reason some think it was necessaryis because the other option was a land invasion and by this point in the war America was of course going to win and the estimated casaulties for that hypothetical war on Japanese soil greatly exceeds the amount in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Well whether you agree with any of that or not i just am so disgusted that something this horrendous could be a best case scenario in any sense, then it also angers me that by large the leaders who were pushing Japan into war and deciding not to give up after Hiroshima weren't the ones affected by this it was the normal civilians who if they had their own choice would most likely not want war at all which is true of all citizens whether the British, Germans or the people who dropped the bombs Americans. Another thing that is actually a positive (positive as in Japanese-American relations improved) that still annoys me as that as soon as the war was over America and Japan struck up one of the largest trade partnerships of all time, just a few years after they were mortal enemies which lead to this horrible suffering the big business leaders of both countries were greatly profiting together... ugh. Well anyway war sucks.
Anyway i was planning on making my posts this time shorter which i've clearly failed at here because this film greatly affected me. If i kept going it would be much longer i mean i haven't touched on the parts about her childhood and i haven't even mentioned Eji Okada's extremely intriguing role. I don't think i completely grasped everything here but it is such a beautiful film, fantastic nom PG. Only seen a few films so far this year but this is an early contender for one of my favourite first time watches this year.

haha. That's my good old favourite member that isn't actually a member!
Sounds like you largely felt the same as me, you thought it improved when they got to the countryside and really liked the Monty and I parts.
By the way i was reading about the film earlier, and apparently I's name is Marwood because it's the name given in the script and you can make it out (it's upside down) on a letter.

I'm glad everyone's enjoying Withnail & I! :) I wasn't quite sure what would be the reaction, and it's nice that people are liking it!
What did you think of the last scene Cosmic?
Mark just repped me for that Hiroshima Mon Amour review and it reminded me of this excellent thread by him - http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=16076&highlight=resnais
I've only read parts of it because i'm planning on watching all of the films and i don't want to ruin anything, but it was the first place i went after i first watched Night and Fog (which he loves) and i'm now going to read his HIroshima Mon Amour (which he doesn't like as much) post which is the first one.

Read this, great stuff . I'd say it is required reading particularly the first paragraph that gives you a good idea of how Resnais saw himself as a filmmaker (unless he was lying as you said haha) i found that really interesting. I'm with you on him feeling like an "auteur" (thus disagreeing with him) i'm not sure if i'm totally convinced that's a real or relevant thing yet but from two films he fits the mold to me. Part of my post was comparing Night and Fog to Hiroshima Mon Amour which obviously isn't a big sample size but in a hypothetical scenario i honestly do think i'd be able to tell they were from the same director if i didn't already know. Suppose his later "puzzle films" (which sounds super intriguing btw even though the way you put it didn't sound very positive it makes me want to see them more haha) might be wildly different, i can see where you are coming from anyway.

What did you think of the last scene Cosmic?
I thought it was a bit sad, yet appropriate.
That's mainly what I was eluding to when I said that "adulthood eventually catches up to us". I/Marwood finally got a proper acting gig, a haircut, and is leaving Withnail behind.
Withnail is clearly a talented actor, but he's not willing to change his lifestyle with the times, or accept jobs that he thinks are beneath him. The Hamlet soliloquy seems to fit him perfectly, and was clearly an excellent choice.
@camo
What did you mean get excluded exactly?
Didn't mean to offend you or anything. What i meant is that if you didn't watch all of the noms then your nom would be excluded, meaning that if i watched it i couldn't vote for it anymore which would feel pointless. Regardless of whether i like it or not i watch alot of films and it is slightly annoying when someone drops out of one of these after i've watched their nom.
A few members like Cricket, Citizen, Neiba, MV, Cosmic, etc, i'm fine with watching their noms first because i know they always finish and take part in the thread. You've fit in well here already though and made a great start to this hall of fame so i'm not as nervous about watching your nom anymore

Nah, it's just some people drop out for whatever reason and a new member (that might be an alternate reality version of me) has obviously a decent chance of that happening because we don't know if they are going to stick around or not. You're too coherent to be Camo. Also I've not seen you use :coleman: and he just can't resist doing that.

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTELL
I`ve seen this a couple of times on tv.its Really quirky, and weird and fast moving. I love the surroundings, the hotel is amazing-would be a great set for a horror
The whole Looks of the movie is amazing. The cast is obviously incredible-its got basically everyone.except Britney-which is a minus but you cant have everything :) But Ralph Fiennes is one of my favourite actors, hes just incredible.First time I saw this I kind of stumbled upon it midway when i was channelsurfing.I couldnt get a hold of what it was, because im so used to seeing Ralph in dramas.Apart from the looks of it,the dialogue is probably my favourite thing,so witty.Learning all those lines and having to perform them so fast must have been difficult.Im not really one to take notice of who actually made the movies, but with the last HOF there was some talk about the same one,and because of that I will add that this is definitely my favourite Wes Anderson movie.I dont really have alot of complaint the only thing is that because of its fastpace and for me personally, because its a comedy, you feel like youre on the outside looking in,insted of feeling like you`re a part of it.A bit disconnected in a way.I dont know if that makes any sense, however I did still really enjoy the movie
Ive slept like 24 hours:o i feel completely out of it!
