Given the success of Empire, it should be no surprise that FOX television would ask executive producer Lee Daniels to create another musical drama and the result is this glossy but problematic pilot that I just watched about the evolution of a girls group seeking musical success in Atlanta (don't ask).
Star Davis (Kate Hudson look-alike Jude Demorest) and Rachael (Rayven Symone-Farrell) are sisters who were given up at birth by Miss Carlotta (Queen Latifah) who are reunited when Star's Insta-gram buddy, Alexandra (Ryan Destiny) has decided that Star has what it takes and after Star stabs Rachael's abusive stepfather (Darius McCrary), they hit the road and hook up with Alexandra and before the hour is over, the trio have hooked up with an alleged big producer (Benjamin Bratt) and are performing at a party for a pro football player backed by invisible music equipment. Latifah and Bratt provide some star power, but the whole thing just appears thrown together and nothing is steeped in realism here...it's the pilot episode and three virtual strangers are almost instantly doing choreographed routines and polished arrangements that just magically materialize and we're just supposed to accept it. It's a lot of flash but unrealistically processed flash that was pretty hard to invest in. Unless Daniels and company slow down a little and make this a little more realistic, I think I'll stick to Empire.
