Yeah, I know, I'll fix my links later. I picked 16 songs, because I doubt we get much of anyone else. I'm still waiting on MoJo's reply. I have a lot to do through the night, and I'll be gone all day tomorrow. Go ahead and post if you are joining, as well as any nominations you may already have. I'll be back! I swear!

Things to Know!

1. I'm going back to eight sets per round.
2. I'm not going to super rush you guys. That would make me one hell of a hypocrite.
3. Yes, you can use the same song, as long as someone else sings it.
4. As far as the final two rounds are concerned, I am going to have you all PM your answers. Don't freak out. It will only be to the last two, and I WILL post all answers afterwards.
5. I feel as though I was going to say one more thing, but I data dumped. Anyone!?! I dunno!

My noms may well change to a less generic 'anyone could have nominated them' set, gotta get my thinking cap on... I assume we will be going at a pace that means people actually get a chance to listen to the songs?

(But I'll try to get them done tomorrow night. :))

No rush at all. I would feel like a first rate boob, rushing people during one of these. You all take your time. See Clazor, just like I said. I'm as slow as Christmas itself. That's the first time in my life I've said that, and it was actually true. Neat!

Before I forget, I need the link to that randomizer thingy. Please!

p.s. Way to go, Chyp. That was fast. Change them up all you want, too. I've already been having second thoughts.

I also have a question about the nominations. Are we allowed to nominate a song that someone else nominated if it is sung by a different artist? (I haven't picked my noms yet, so it's not an issue either way. I just want to know before I start choosing my noms.)

Oh yes. I almost did two versions of a song or three myself.

You guys know something? I have only ever done one of these before. I believe so, anyways. Anyways, I didn't set the thread up. I totally forgot about my rules section. Well damn! I had them all written out in my head, too. I will fix that right now. I only have a couple things I should mention.

I vote a resounding 'NO' .... furthermore I also vote that people should only be able to pick nominations from artists that actually reside within a five mile radius of their own home .... thankfully I live in an area densely populated by all manner of popular artists where we don't even move those less fortunate in terms of breathing to the cemetery 5.2 miles away :shifty:

Awwww .... make it a rules-free tournament .... it is Christmas after all ;)

... and also in the spirit of Christmas if it helps those living in less 'artist-rich' areas I'll change my vote on nominating same chunes but by different artist(e)s to 'yes' :)

It looks like there are 7 people who joined, so each person should nominate 2 more songs to add 14 more songs. Then, put all the names into a randomizer, and the two people whose names come out on top would get 1 extra song each. That would make up the 16 missing songs.

Anyone!?! I dunno!
Just sayin' hun.
I'm gonna split that set up into two manageable chunks myself so voting from me will appear piecemeal.

I'll also wait a while just in case a cpl of the matches change slightly...

Round 1, Day 1!!!

1~Mariah Carey ~ All I Want for Christmas is You vs. 5~Celtic Carol (instrumental) - Lindsay Sterling
Im not a mariah fan but this is a great christmas song. I liked the other one aswell though

2~Johnny Mathis - When A Child Is Born (Soleado) vs. 1~John Mellencamp ~ I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
both okay,i prefer other versions of the second one-it was a really fun version but it wasnt very christmassy.

7~The Eurythmics - Winter Wonderland vs. 3~The Muppets - Jingle Belll Rock
I usually love the erythmics but wasnt really a fan of this cover.I dont really have a connection to the muppets, its not something i used to watch as a kid but i can see it being fun

2~Michael Barbera - Do You Hear What I Hear vs. 7~John Lennon - Happy Xmas (War is Over)
This was closer than i thought it would be. Added the first one to my christmaslist

5~What's this? - The Nightmare before Christmas vs. 4~Gayla Peevey - I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas
Never heard either,I like the nostalgia of the second one,but the first was really fun.

6~Kelly,Trisha & Reba-Silent night vs. 7~Cee Lo Green - What Christmas Means to Me
First one is my nom..also cee lo is a rapist so hard for me to vote on that ;)

5~God bless us everyone - Andrea Bocelli vs. 1~Darlene Love ~ All Alone on Christmas

I had no idea. I'd never even heard of him before. I was trying to find the version of the song I remembered liking the most, and out of the ones I found on Youtube, that sounded the closest.

That was actually a huge problem I had with nominating songs. I've heard a lot of different versions of Christmas songs (particularly at work), but have no idea who sings them.

I dont think anyone besides me cares about stuff like that when voting though,so not to worry! I only know of him because he was on the voice when shakira was theres (also he sings that **** you/forget you song)

Since the song match-ups in that post have changed since they were originally set, I assume the matches Topsy voted in are the correct/updated ones, so I had a listen to all of them as well.

Round 1, Day 1!!!

1~Mariah Carey ~ All I Want for Christmas is You vs. 5~Celtic Carol (instrumental) - Lindsay Sterling
While I'm not a fan of Mariah Carey, her version of that song is perfectly fine. I am, however, a huge sucker for violins. I'd seen that Lindsay Sterling song before, maybe last year, but kind of forgot about it.

2~Johnny Mathis - When A Child Is Born (Soleado) vs. 1~John Mellencamp ~ I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
I really like John Mellencamp's version of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus". If it wasn't already taken, I definitely would've nominated it. I wasn't really a fan of "When a Child is Born".

7~The Eurythmics - Winter Wonderland vs. 3~The Muppets - Jingle Belll Rock
I couldn't figure out which version of "Winter Wonderland" I liked the most, and I decided on the Eurythmics just because it was a bit different. While I love other versions of "Jingle Bell Rock", I actually really dislike the Muppets so that was kind of difficult to listen to.

2~Michael Barbera - Do You Hear What I Hear vs. 7~John Lennon - Happy Xmas (War is Over)
I'd never heard that version of "Do You Hear What I Hear", but then again I haven't heard many different versions because I don't really like overly religious holiday music. "Happy Xmas" is almost too depressing, and I might not have nominated it if I could think of anything else, but I like it a little more than the other song in this match.

5~What's this? - The Nightmare before Christmas vs. 4~Gayla Peevey - I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas
I don't like Nightmare Before Christmas, but it does have some catchy music. "What's This?" is nowhere near as good as "This is Halloween", but that song is not really seasonally appropriate haha. I've never been a fan of "I Want a Hippopatamus for Christmas", I find her voice to be very grating. It kind of irritates me that I've heard it so many times I know all the words.

6~Kelly,Trisha & Reba-Silent night vs. 7~Cee Lo Green - What Christmas Means to Me
I've heard Kelly Clarkson's name, but don't know any songs by her. I don't even know which of the three women she was. I only really liked the voice of the girl in the red dress. I didn't like the girl in the green dress at all, and the black dress lady made me turn the volume down. Overall it was a typical rendition of "Silent Night". I was going to nominate the Stevie Wonder version of "What Christmas Mean to Me", but I liked the music a little more in this version.

5~God bless us everyone - Andrea Bocelli vs. 1~Darlene Love ~ All Alone on Christmas
"God Bless Us Everyone" is the only song in this Round I don't think I've ever heard any version of before. I wasn't really a fan of the singer. I'm not very familiar with that Darlene Love song either, but it was pleasant to listen to.

4~Idina Menzel & Michael Bublé - Baby It's Cold Outside vs. 1~Kenny Rogers and Wynonna Judd ~ Mary Did You Know?
I don't listen to Michael Bublé, but my room mate likes him a lot. I couldn't watch the video (it was really weird seeing young children but hearing adult voices), but I liked the song itself. While the voices of the singers in "Mary Did You Know?" did a good job, I don't like that song at all and their rendition unfortunately didn't change that.

Round 1, Day 1!!!

http://i.imgur.com/iHH8LrX.gif

Mariah Carey ~ All I Want for Christmas is You vs. Celtic Carol (instrumental) - Lindsey Stirling
Not a huge fan of Ms. Carey but that's one of a few I don't mind from her, love a few violin pieces but that one has never particularly done much for me

Johnny Mathis - When A Child Is Born (Soleado) vs. John Mellencamp ~ I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
Absolutely adore Mathis as a singer, t'other was on my list but Lisa nabbed it first

The Eurythmics - Winter Wonderland vs. The Muppets - Jingle Belll Rock
Not keen on either tbh, Dave & Annie sound like they are simply going through the motions of having a Christmas single but it's still preferable to a lacklustre version of a song that I've never cared for anyway

Michael Barbera - Do You Hear What I Hear vs. John Lennon - Happy Xmas (War is Over)
Both were on my list but obviously I prefer the one that made my final cut over the one that didn't

What's this? - The Nightmare before Christmas vs. Gayla Peevey - I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas
Closer than I expected to be fair but the latter was always gonna struggle with me

Kelly,Trisha & Reba-Silent night vs. Cee Lo Green - What Christmas Means to Me
First link needs the "m" adding btw and I'm not enamoured of it but it just about gets the sway here for me as t'other just doesn't suit my personal taste in Christmas songs

God bless us everyone - Andrea Bocelli vs.Darlene Love ~ All Alone on Christmas
Not mad on Bocelli but despite having had one from Ms. Love in contention for my list All Alone again just doesn't suit my personal preference in Christmas songs

Idina Menzel & Michael Bublé - Baby It's Cold Outside vs. Kenny Rogers and Wynonna Judd ~ Mary Did You Know?
Really tough match, both are great nominations imo

Christine, I still need two more songs from you. I also need one more song from both Chyp and GBG.

1~Mariah Carey ~ All I Want for Christmas is You vs. 5~Celtic Carol (instrumental) - Lindsay Sterling (I liked the Mariah Carey song, but Lindsay Sterling is terrific.)

2~Johnny Mathis - When A Child Is Born (Soleado) vs. 1~John Mellencamp ~ I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus (I love Johnny Mathis, and the John Mellencamp song was only okay for me.)

7~The Eurythmics - Winter Wonderland vs. 3~The Muppets - Jingle Bell Rock (I've never been much of fan of The Eurythmics, but that was a nice version of that song.)

2~Michael Barbera - Do You Hear What I Hear vs. 7~John Lennon - Happy Xmas (War is Over) (I don't know who Michael Barbera is, but he has a great voice.)

Btw, have the radio stations where you guys are started with the christmas songs yet? The station I usually listen to on my way to work has had a special thing the last few years: 24/7 christmas music...from the 1st of December until the 31st. And it's only about 25-30 songs they play...nonstop...FOR A MONTH. This year, owing to massive complaints from listeners, apparently, they've shown some restraint. Now they'll wait until after the celebration of Saint Lucia on the 13th and then go on to the 24/7 christmas music...with the same 25-30 songs....................Progress???

No idea, not listened to the radio since John Peel passed away

I would never listen to any radio station that only rotated 25 songs anyway tho - no matter what the time of year or the tunes .... sounds more like torture than entertainment to me :D

I'd skip it completely if it wasn't for the hosts of the morning show. They're funny, discuss interesting topics and they're part of my morning routine. It's more or less the only time I even listen to the radio and I still get tired of the music.

I don't listen to the radio, but all the stores here (including the one I work at) begin playing Christmas music the day after Remembrance Day. It's been like this every year for as long as I can remember. There is never a wide enough variety of songs being played, and it seems like you hear the same things everywhere you go every single year. It would probably start earlier too if people didn't get offended, thinking that an earlier start to the holiday season would upset veterans (there is always some drama about this every year, with people getting mad at stores having decorations up before Remembrance Day).

I agree that it's way too early to start - not because of potentially upsetting veterans (most of them say they don't care), but rather because the season really doesn't need to last that long. As a fan of Halloween, it hurts my soul to see stores setting up their Christmas displays in mid October. Working in retail, and hearing the same few Christmas songs from November 12 to sometime in January is also very irritating.

I rarely listen to the radio, but I added a micro SD card with about 300 Christmas songs to my mp3 player. It mixes in with my regular playlist of about 2000 other songs, so I get a nice variety of music throughout the holiday season.

^ That's the right way to do things. Having just a few Christmas songs over and over again is tiring. Mixing them in with non-seasonal songs alleviates that.

300 Christmas songs is a lot though (on it's own, it's not much compared to 2000). Are there many unique songs in there, or is it just a ton of different versions of the same song?

Not having that big of a Halloween here, though it's gotten bigger and bigger over the last 10 years. Really all the major american holidays except thanksgiving have started to show their faces. We even started getting our own black friday sales a few years ago without any of the preamble of thanksgiving. That said, we don't see that much of a transition from Halloween to christmas, though. There's a kinda big gap for us throughout November, but as I understand it, you guys have Thanksgiving between Halloween and christmas. Does the separate holidays mash together into a giant three month celebration or something? 'Cause it seems wired to hang up your christmas stuff after Halloween, shouldn't it be the fall leaves and turkeys before the reindeers and snowmen?

CosmicRunaway

Yes. It's also known as Armistice Day, marking the end of hostilities of the first World War.

I always thought American Thanksgiving being in November was weird. Ours is in mid October, which makes sense considering it's a harvest festival and all. Also having winter decorations up around Halloween isn't so out of place here, because we usually get some snow before then anyway haha.

We even started getting our own black friday sales a few years ago without any of the preamble of thanksgiving.
Same here. Most of the major retailers in Canada are American companies anyway, so it sort of makes sense. There's usually a kind of terrible "Canadian Black Friday" in October (though it's too far away from the holiday shopping season for people to really care), then a "proper" one with much better deals whenever the American one takes place.

I will do my votes here in a bit, make sure we are all done, and get the next set up.

p.s. We have a Christian radio station here that plays a mixture of both Christmas and Christian songs. Also, we have slow songs, and pop music on 97.5 FM. It works in a bit of Christmas here and there, around your everyday music. However, they play non stop Christmas on both Christmas Eve and Christmas day.

p.s.s. I think I'll just hide out in this freakin' thread for the rest of the year.

There are some unique songs and some duplicate songs, but they're all versions by artists that I love. These are basically the Christmas albums by country artists like George Strait, Garth Brooks, etc., old fogey stuff like Dean Martin, Neil Diamond, and some standards like the stuff that was nominated in this tournament. It's a nice mix, especially when mixed with a bunch of non-Christmas music so it never gets to be too much.

3~Frosty the Snowman - Jackson 5 vs. 2~Slade - Merry Xmas Everybody voted against my Jackson 5 cos Slade, well I love Noddy and the boys, even when he pops up on one of those reminiscence programmes he always seems like such a genuine bloke and one that always seems still slightly taken aback by their successes

4~Clint Black - Til' Santa's Gone (Milk and Cookies) vs. 7~Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - Merry Christmas Baby
"Merry Christmas Baby" was a song I was going to nominate if it wasn't already taken, so the other song would have to be pretty good to get my vote over it. I really don't like country music, so that song was really difficult to sit through.

4~Neil Diamond - You Make It Feel Like Christmas vs. 5~Silent Night - Taylor Davies (feat. Home Free)
I didn't like the background melody in that version of Silent Night. Wasn't really into the vocalists either, so I'm voting for Neil Diamond even though I'm not really a fan of that song either.

5~The spirit of christmas past - Enya vs. 6~The Darkness-Christmas Time
Neither of these are songs I'd really listen to, but the Darkness' song was different, and the video was a little entertaining.

7~Frank Sinatra - I'll Be Home For Christmas vs. 2~Siouxsie & The Banshees - Il Est Né, Le Divin Enfant
"Il Est Né, Le Divin Enfant" was quite nice, but I have a lot of nostalgia for the other song.

3~Brandi Carlisle - The Heartache Can Wait vs. 2~The Kingston Trio - The First Snows Of Winter
Again, I wasn't really feeling either of these songs.

3~Frosty the Snowman - Jackson 5 vs. 2~Slade - Merry Xmas Everybody
Slade's "Merry Xmas Everybody" was one of the first songs I thought of for this...but it was already taken. I don't think I've ever heard the Jackson 5's version of "Frosty". It was interesting.

1~José Feliciano ~ Feliz Navidad vs. 2~Good Shepherd Band - Gabriel's Message (My Gift To You)
This was actually a tough decision."Feliz Navidad" is one of those songs that really gets me into the Christmas mood ("Sleigh Ride" is definitely #1 at that though), and I actually really liked the other song here as well. The main vocalist has a really nice voice, and violins are always great.

1~Joan Jett and the Blackhearts ~ Little Drummer Boy vs. 6~Alf Prøysen-Julepresangen
I'm not a huge fan of any version of "Little Drummer Boy", but this one wasn't bad. Even though I don't speak Norwegian, that Julepresangen was fun as well.

i really liked both though!

again i like both. the violin got me though

5~The spirit of christmas past - Enya vs. 6~The Darkness-Christmas Time
second one is my nom.but the first one is so beautiful. Does Enya always use the same background sample though? thats not ment be offensive because obviously it works, but ive heard it in a few of her songs now so just wondering if thats her thing.

7~Frank Sinatra - I'll Be Home For Christmas vs. 2~Siouxsie & The Banshees - Il Est Né, Le Divin Enfant
I really liked the second,i just didnt get christmas from it

3~Brandi Carlisle - The Heartache Can Wait vs. 2~The Kingston Trio - The First Snows Of Winter
i really liked both so i went with the one that give me the most christmas vibe
3~Frosty the Snowman - Jackson 5 vs. 2~Slade - Merry Xmas Everybody
i never knew who sang this, thanks, now i can listen to it when i want to :P But mygawd,i really want to fix his hairsituation

1~José Feliciano ~ Feliz Navidad vs. 2~Good Shepherd Band - Gabriel's Message (My Gift To You)
classic!the other one was so beautiful though,on my christmas list now

1~Joan Jett and the Blackhearts ~ Little Drummer Boy vs. 6~Alf Prøysen-Julepresangen
nominated this because i ran out of christmas songs lol (i remember them now though of course:mad:) Its one of my all time favourite christmas songs but obviously since its in norwegian im not expecting anyone else to like it. For those wondering what its about- its about a little boy who wants to make a christmas present for his mother by carving something out of wood, but he keeps getting it wrong and it gets smaller and smaller so each vers hes making something new until finally its just a thin plank to slice bread on.

"Il Est Né, Le Divin Enfant" (he is born, the divine child) is a French Christmas carol, with the lyrics being about the birth of Jesus. But just listening to it, if you don't know any French, probably doesn't come across as being super Christmas-y though.

I dont, but I assumed the lyrics were something like that, nonetheless its a great song and i liked it regardless-but i liked both so i needed something to break the tie.Do you learn french in school in canada?

Do you learn french in school in canada?
It's mandatory from Grade 1-9. Then in High School it's completely optional. In the lower Grades, you have the option to opt-in to French immersion (where most of your subjects will be taught in French), but it wasn't very common where I lived due to the small population and schools not having the resources for it. I think now they can start French immersion in Kindergarten, and there are at least two French-only schools here in the city.

Other provinces and territories may differ in their regulations. In Quebec and parts of New Brunswick, French is the first language instead of English, so I imagine it's probably the opposite there, though I've never looked into it.

thats so cool. i didnt know you had any french at all until i found out about the celine dion thing in eurovision
we had french or german (and now spanish) in jr high, but its only for 2 hours a week so you dont really learn a whole lot.
we also a have sign language now which i wish we had back then, that would have been great.

I didn't really learn anything doing 9 years of French in school either. It was mostly just memorizing vocabulary lists and knowing how to conjugate etre and like...1 or 2 other verbs. Practically useless. I learned way more in just a couple weeks doing German at a University level than what I learned of French in my entire life.

Most of the French I know I learned from packaging. Everything you buy has an English and French side (or both on the same side sometimes). It might have something to do with being left-handed, but it seems like every time I put something in the cupboard or fridge, the French side is out, so I know most of my groceries better in French haha.

As long as the two songs that you want to change haven't been in any of the rounds that have been posted yet, I don't see any problem with you changing them, especially since you're the one running the tournament, so you're the one who has to do the extra work to change them. :)

Yeah, she was smiling from ear to ear. I'm having trouble remembering the other book, for some reason. I also got her a Bobby Darin dvd, plus the movie about his life. Kevin Spacey did a great job there, and he sounds amazing when he sings.

So, I will post the next set of winners, plus the next set in the game, right after Chyp and Cosmo reply. No rush, though. I'm just going to make sure I'm ready to go as soon as possible, from now on. I don't want us running too late. It's actually going pretty good, now that I got the hang of it. This isn't something I'm in the habit of running, soooooo . . .

I actually took the time to do a craft project, while I listened to these songs earlier this evening. That's exactly what I was hoping for. A nice break, of listening to Christmas music, while decorating, making crafts, and/or cooking/baking. My first craft project, which now that I'm looking at it, I made the bow too big, I made too many ribbons at the bottom, and I maybe no longer like the ribbon running through the middle of it. Lord, I'm forever picky! Someone gave me this thing years ago. It had no lights on it, a very faded ribbon, and a bunch of ornaments attached to it, that were also very faded by years of being in the sun. Oh well, maybe I'll like it more after a few hours of sleep. I also baked two homemade, deep dish, chocolate chip pies. Now those I still love.

Sure, that's fine. I'll fix our nominations, post the next set of winners, and the next set of songs, in just a bit. I'm running extremely late getting in this evening, and I've been busy all day, while dealing with a flu bug. Luckily for me it's just one of those nose and throat things. 3~Frank Sinatra - Have yourself a merry little Christmas vs. 4~Danny Kaye & The Andrews Sisters - A Merry Christmas At Grandmother’s House
I don't think I've ever heard "A Merry Christmas At Grandmother's House" before. It was mostly the slower, sad Christmas songs on at work today, so it was nice to hear something really upbeat right now. Vote definitely has to go to Sinatra though.

3~The Punch Brothers - O Come, O Come Emmanuel vs. 7~Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Carol of the Bells
That Punch Brothers song was nicely sung, but the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's "Carol of the Bells" is literally my favourite Christmas thing.

6~Shakira-Santa Baby vs. 1~SHINee ~ Last Christmas
Tough call! Shakira's version of "Santa Baby" was good, but felt a little too slow. I don't think I've heard a Korean pop group's version of a Christmas song before, but it was also good. I kept changing my mind as to which one I liked more.

7~Tom Petty - Christmas All Over Again vs. 6~Mel & Kim-Rocking around the christmas tree
I've heard that particular version of "Rocking Around the Christmas Tree" before, but it's not the one I really like. Between this version and Tom Petty, I have to go with Petty.

1~Nat King Cole ~ Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire vs. 4~Buck Owens - Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy
"The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)" is one of my favourite Christmas songs. I thought the version I liked the most was Nat King Cole's, but that sounds a but different than I was expecting. Maybe I'm just remembering it wrong, or it sounds differently over retail speakers haha. Really wasn't a fan of that Buck Owens song.

6~Bonnie Tyler-Merry Christmas vs. 2~Brook Benton - This Time Of The Year
I hadn't heard either of these songs before.

5~Christmas Secrets - Enya vs. 2~Dean Martin - Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
That Enya song was really beautiful, but I really love Dean Martin's version of "Let it Snow!"

7~Darlene Love - Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) vs. 5~One toy soldier - Enya
I'm not sure if Darlene Love's version is my favourite take on that song, but I do like it quite a lot. I liked the other Enya song in this round a lot more than this one.

Sorry I'm late getting back. When I got done here early this morning, my cat started walking all over the house, meowing something awful. Then she started straining, and drops of blood came out of her. It looks like she has a UTI, bladder infection . . . I had to tend to that, but of course. She's getting rather old, unfortunately.

I'm sorry to hear about your cat I hope she feels better soon.

Round 1, Set 3

3~Frank Sinatra - Have yourself a merry little Christmas vs. 4~Danny Kaye & The Andrews Sisters - A Merry Christmas At Grandmother’s House

I think my favourite rendition of this song can be found in The Monuments Men, wherein a daughter and her children send a recording of themselves to her father in WWII era Germany. The entire encampment just stops what they're doing to listen to the song and it has such an impact on them. Too bad I didn't remember this until now, or that would've been one of my noms.

3~The Punch Brothers - O Come, O Come Emmanuel vs. 7~Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Carol of the Bells

Not much of a contest here. I liked my nomination of Carol of the Bells goes rock, and there's not much difference between this and mine, other than mine got lyrics. Did like this version of Emmanuel too, though.

6~Shakira-Santa Baby vs. 1~SHINee ~ Last Christmas

Wins by default, thought Shakira was a bit tame, none of her usual fire in this.

7~Tom Petty - Christmas All Over Again vs. 6~Mel & Kim-Rocking around the christmas tree

Unfamiliar wins over nostalgia this time, mostly because of Petty's voice

1~Nat King Cole ~ Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire vs. 4~Buck Owens - Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy

Few things can beat Cole's rendition of Chestnuts. This time nostalgia wins the day.

6~Bonnie Tyler-Merry Christmas vs. 2~Brook Benton - This Time Of The Year

Wasn't too fond of either, but Benton took it on smooth voice.

5~Christmas Secrets - Enya vs. 2~Dean Martin - Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

My nom.

7~Darlene Love - Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) vs. 5~One toy soldier - Enya

Wasn't a fair fight, especially as One Toy Soldier is one of my favourite christmas songs and one of two noms I'd like to see win over all others. (Isn't gonna happen, but one can hope)

this was actually alot more difficult than i thought it would be. But the first one is such a classic, and with good reason

3~The Punch Brothers - O Come, O Come Emmanuel vs. 7~Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Carol of the Bells

Yeah, that's why I'm going to post even when 2-3 haven't voted. Well, as long as it's the next day. Maybe they can even do both sets when that happens. Granted, when I first forgot and posted 16 sets, you didn't care for me having so much up in one go. It's a shame we have to do 128 songs in every tournament. I just don't like having a huge number of matches to churn through as it feels more like a chore rather than fun - funnily enough I made that mistake in one of my early tourneys and correctly got told it wasn't good though now it's apparently not only acceptable but even preferable to some  Seems to me the primary aim of most of these nowadays is simply to get to the next one and it's not really about the music any more but about crowning a winner as soon as possible which is a real shame imo.

1~Lynyrd Skynyrd ~ Christmas Time Again vs. 6~Kelly Clarckson- Underneath the tree
Underneath the tree is my favourite newer christmas song,so fun and upbeat. Great to put on when youre doing the christmas cleaning ;) Really liked the other one too!

1~Chuck Berry ~ Run Rudolph Run vs. 2~The Sonics - Santa Claus
two songs ive never heard before,i really liked both but i didnt really get christmas from either of them

2~The Killers ft. Toni Halliday - A Great Big Sled vs. 3~Wizzard - I wish it could be Christmas every day

6~Britney Spears-Only wish (this years) vs. 4~Steve Wariner - On Christmas Morning
voting for the best christmas song ever recorded

6~Kelly Clarkson-Winter dreams vs. 2~Paul Anka - It's Christmas Everywhere
I caaant decide..at first i voted for paul anka, but i love the bridge and chorus of the first one

4~Spike Jone & His City Slickers - All I Want For Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth)
vs. 3~Bob Dylan - Must be Santa
never heard the second one, that one is definitly going to be played alot here. The first one unfortunately got oversung when i was younger lol

5~Tänd ett ljus - Triad vs. 7~U2 - Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)
I loved both.I prefer other versions of the second one though
still really good

5~Jiminy Cricket - When you wish upon a star vs. Everclear - Santa Baby
the first one makes me want to cry. I loved the version of the second one, even though i nominated the song with shaki, its not really a song i like too much. But i prefer it a bit more upbeat like this one

Round 1, Set 4!!!

1~Lynyrd Skynyrd ~ Christmas Time Again vs. 6~Kelly Clarckson- Underneath the tree
I don't have strong feelings one way or the other for either song.

1~Chuck Berry ~ Run Rudolph Run vs. 2~The Sonics - Santa Claus
I prefer other version of that song (Bryan Adams, Keith Richards, etc), but that one's fine too. Hadn't head that Sonics song before.

2~The Killers ft. Toni Halliday - A Great Big Sled vs. 3~Wizzard - I wish it could be Christmas every day
Hadn't heard that Killer Song before either. It was pretty good. I would've nominated that Wizzard song if it wasn't taken though, so I like that one more.

6~Britney Spears-Only wish (this years) vs. 4~Steve Wariner - On Christmas Morning
I hadn't heard either of these songs before.

6~Kelly Clarkson-Winter dreams vs. 2~Paul Anka - It's Christmas Everywhere
I hadn't heard either of those songs before. I've heard a different version of "It's Christmas Everywhere" though. Again, no strong feelings either way for either song.

4~Spike Jone & His City Slickers - All I Want For Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth) vs. 3~Bob Dylan - Must be Santa
I really don't like "All I Want for Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth)". That version is a bit different than the one I remember, but isn't different enough for me to like it.

5~Tänd ett ljus - Triad vs. 7~U2 - Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)
This was really tough! That Triad song was really catchy. I'm not really a fan of U2, but I really like their version of "Chrsitmas (Baby Please Come Home)". I also like that song in general, if anyone couldn't tell by the fact that I nominated two different versions of it haha. I'm totally okay with "Tänd ett ljus" going through though.

5~Jiminy Cricket - When you wish upon a star vs. Everclear - Santa Baby
I honestly did not realize that "When You Wish Upon a Star" was a Christmas song. While I really only nominated Everclear's version of "Santa Baby" because I couldn't think of anything else, I've never liked Cliff Edwards' voice.

You're welcome. And winter came was something of a inpulse purchase for me. My mom always loved Enya and I got hooked after the first LOTR movie and her song May it be. I'd grown tired of all the usual christmas song we listend to, so when I saw this album I bought it on the spot. Since then it's become my favourite christmas album and I can't go through a christmas season without listening to it at least four or five times.

No idea who told you it has to be 128 in every tourney 'cos it's entirely up to the host ;)

I think I'm the one who told her that because that's the size of a normal song tournament. (I also gave her the options of 64 songs for a small tournament, or 256 for a mega-tournament, but I think we were already over 64 songs when she asked.) It's possible to have song tournaments with different amounts of songs, but the later rounds won't come out even, and we would have to have some matches with three songs instead of two. (I know that some people don't care when there are three songs in a match, but personally, I don't like those matches. It just doesn't seem fair to those songs.)

I also prefer when the song tournaments are run at a slower pace. I like having the time to listen to all the songs in their entirety, and I sometimes have a tendency to get sidetracked by the extra songs listed along the side of the YouTube page. :)

I don't understand why some people seem to feel the need to rush through the tournaments. It takes all the fun out of them. (I think that may be why there are less people joining some of the more recent tournaments. Maybe if we can get back on track to fun and relaxing tournaments, some of the dropouts will return.)

Ha-ha - all your fault then gbg :p Just messing, not keen on three-way ties myself either, though I can tolerate the odd one when there has to be one ... was mainly referring to multiples that divide down nice and easy though (even a 32 song tourney is grand imo).

Different people want different experiences, I can totally respect that. I simply won't join any tournaments that are run in a fashion that cause them to be unenjoyable to me personally - but I'll still happily host one every now and then as long as there are people that don't mind a little more sedate pace.

The problem with a 32 song tournament is that everyone who joins would only be able to nominate a few songs, (unless only very few people join). I like either 64 or 128 song tournaments, depending on how many people join. That gives everyone enough nominations, and the tournament can be run at a nice steady pace, without taking too long.

Wasn't advocating having a 32 song tournament with 32 participants (I'd probably take part in one tho') ;)
Having 6-12 noms each is optimum imo - total size of tournament for me is more just a by-product of the number of people wanting to take part.

5~Tänd ett ljus - Triad vs. 7~U2 - Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)

One of the more popular swedish christmas songs, it's about keeping hope alive in your fellow man, and helping to create a better world for the children of tomorrow. I think it was played six times during the five hours I had the radio on. I still like it, though.

5~Jiminy Cricket - When you wish upon a star vs. Everclear - Santa Baby

Every year since the early 60's, there's been an hour long disney special at 3 pm on christmas eve. It's always the same cartoons (except for the 'coming attractions' bit where they promote upcoming movies) and it always ends with Jiminy Cricket singing this song. I think this would be the first thing a swede would think about if asked about christmas or what they do on christmas eve. Ergo, Everclear got a snow ball's chance in hell of winning this match.

Sorry, it just amused me.
I'm obviously not the only one that listens to songs with absolutely no idea at all what they are singing about then :D

No idea who told you it has to be 128 in every tourney 'cos it's entirely up to the host ;)

I meant to reply last night, and I was going to say that it might have been GBG, but it looks like she answered this for me. :)

Yep, agree with this 100%. I hate those rushed tournaments that have so many pairings that it sucks all the joy of listening, pondering, comparing, appreciating...I mean what is the rush anyway? It's like we all don't have lives, work, family to fit in too!

Thanks! It helps a lot to see this. I am sorry I missed last night for posting the next set. My freakin' bank decided to put my money in another account. I didn't realize that until they were closed, and they don't open back up until Monday morning at 8:30. I needed to buy a family member both diabetic and high blood pressure meds, pay a bill, and buy some foooood. I had to freak. After that, my son got this stupid flu bug, but his is worse, because he's been throwing up. My poor baby. Anyways, I promise to have it all caught up again tonight. Sorry again!

It's nice to listen to all the Christmas songs I've never heard before, but there's clearly only one best Christmas song and if it doesn't win then it's all humbug!

Should I know what song you mean? If not, are you going to tell me? :)

OK, this just took FOREVER!!! You guys are not going to believe what I was doing. I got to Chyp's song by Enya, and could not find it in his list. I then thought, "Wait, he didn't nominate Enya. Clazor did." So then I looked in Clazor's list a bunch of times, certain I was losing my mind, and that I had misnumbered them. I was also certain that I was screwed. This was going to be a mess I'd never get fixed. Thank God I finally realized that I missed updating Chyp's list from 16 to 19 nominations. DAMN! I'm tired. :p

Round 1, Set 5!!!

1~Eartha Kitt ~ Santa Baby vs. 6~De nye Gitarkameratene-Halleluja
Both decent versions of songs I like a little better by other performers. I don't consider Leonard Cohen's "Halleluja" to be a Christmas song. It always seemed strange to hear different versions of it crop up, especially around the holidays.

6~Maria Mena-Home for Christmas vs. 2~Celtic Woman - Little Drummer Boy
I wasn't a fan of Maria Mena's voice. While I liked the background choir in "Little Drummer Boy", the two main singers didn't sound good to me, particularly the one in the pink dress. I can't really decide which one to vote for right now. I'll update this later once I do.

3~Charles Brown - Please Come Home for Christmas vs. 7~Wham! ~ Last Christmas
I like both these songs, but Wham!'s "Last Christmas" was one of the first songs I thought of for this (but at the time it was already taken).

4~Elvis Presley & Martina McBride - Blue Christmas vs. 5~Children, Go where I send Thee - Kenny Rogers (feat. Home Free)
Elvis' "Blue Christmas" was a song I thought about nominating as well. I prefer the version with just him though. I hadn't heard that other song before. It had a nice upbeat rhythm to it, but it's not my kind of song.

1~Andy Williams ~ It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year vs. 7~Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas
Really tough decision! I really like Andy Williams' song. I rather like "Do They Know It's Christmas" as well, hence why I nominated it haha.

4~Bing Crosby - Hawaiian Christmas Song (Mele Kalikimaka) vs. 3~Steeleye Span - Gaudete
That was an interesting version of "Gaudete", but I kinda love the "Hawaiian Christmas Song".

2~Enya - O Come, O Come, Emmanuel vs. 5~Carol of the bells (instrumental) - Orion's Reign
Enya's song was quite beautiful. Orion's Reign's version of "Carol of the Bells" is not as good as the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's version, but it's still good. ;)

4~Alan Jackson - I Only Want You for Christmas vs. 3~Greg Lake - I believe In Father Christmas
I was not into the first song at all. I didn't think I knew what the second song was, but as soon as it started playing I knew what it was. I rather like that song, but never knew who sang it or what it was called haha.

Round 1, Set 5!!!

1~Eartha Kitt ~ Santa Baby vs. 6~De nye Gitarkameratene-Halleluja - I'm thinking that Halleluja isn't a Christmas song, well not one I associate with Christmas , but besides that Eartha Kitt's Santa Baby I'd def have had if D hadn't nabbed it. Eartha is glorious

6~Maria Mena-Home for Christmas vs. 2~Celtic Woman - Little Drummer Boy - I've never heard of Maria Mena but like her voice. I lik the medieval church chanting type thing at the beginning of the second song, but I've never liked Little Drummer Boy

3~Charles Brown - Please Come Home for Christmas vs. 7~Wham! ~ Last Christmas = Charles Brown's song is great but Last Christmas is a staple Christmas song for us

4~Elvis Presley & Martina McBride - Blue Christmas vs. 5~Children, Go where I send Thee - Kenny Rogers (feat. Home Free) I don't like this post video melding of people into old songs, it's kinda creepy. There's nowt wrong with Elvis singing on his own. I quite like the other song, and Kenny's still got it

1~Andy Williams ~ It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year vs. 7~Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas - Andy Williams is great , but Band Aids is a landmark piece of music, and it's a good one too

4~Bing Crosby - Hawaiian Christmas Song (Mele Kalikimaka)
vs. 3~Steeleye Span - Gaudete I've always liked Gaudete since it came out in the 70s

2~Enya - O Come, O Come, Emmanuel vs. 5~Carol of the bells (instrumental) - Orion's Reign - nice version of Oh Come, Enya has a crystal voice but I'm drawn to Carol of the Bells done in the metal way, I like it

4~Alan Jackson - I Only Want You for Christmas vs. 3~Greg Lake - I believe In Father Christmas Always liked I Believe in Father Christmas, it's a bit cynical

Oh, I don't think that's what he meant, and I know I didn't mean that. I hate when my songs match up. It's not right to lose a song no matter what. I won't allow that to happen. When I make the post for you all to vote in, I just copy/paste from the original list, and there are no numbers in it. I add them in, just in case people want to know whose song is whose. However, when I made the long list of 128 songs, I did have the numbers there, to make sure our songs didn't go up against our own songs. They still do, just a little bit, for some reason, but I've watched out for that now. Round 1, Set 6!!!

Joe Williams - Kissing By The MIstletoe vs. May Ev'ry Day be Christmas - Irma Thomas with Preservation Hall Jazz Band
Both of these were completely new to me.

Barry Gordon - Nuttin' for Christmas vs. Keith Richards - Run Rudolph Run
I hadn't heard "Nuttin' for Christmas" in a very long time. It's sort of nostalgic, but I really love Keith Richards "Run Rudolph Run" (even though I think I meant to nominate Bryan Adams' version hahaha).

SHINee ~ Winter Wonderland vs. Thankfull heart - Michael Cain & The Muppets
I think I'm one of the few people on the planet who doesn't like anything about The Muppets.

Burl Ives - Rudolph the red nosed Reindeer vs. Low - Just Like Christmas
Tough choice! I'm going with nostalgia this time though.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Christmas Eve/Sarajevo [Timeless Version] vs. Madrugada - Lift me
Hadn't heard "Lift me" before. It was good, but doesn't have the same impact as the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Christmas songs though.

Alan Jackson - Let It Be Christmas vs. Celtic Woman - Carol Of The Bells
I like that Celtic Woman version better than the one from the last round, but I still don't like any of their voices. It has a violin though, which makes me like it more than the other song in this match.

Journey of the Angels - Enya vs. Love Actually - Christmas Is All Around
A lot of Enya's songs kind of sound the same to me. They're nice, but not really my style. As a fan of Love Actually, I think it would be hilariously appropriate if "Christmas Is All Around" won.

The Eagles ~ Please Come Home for Christmas vs. The Ronettes - Sleigh Ride
I also wasn't able to see that Eagles video, but I found it elsewhere. I rather like that song, but "Sleigh Ride" is one of my favourite Christmas tunes, even if the Ronettes' version is not my favourite. It's still really good.

Round 1, Set 5

1~Eartha Kitt ~ Santa Baby vs. 6~De nye Gitarkameratene-Halleluja

6~Maria Mena-Home for Christmas vs. 2~Celtic Woman - Little Drummer Boy

Never heard of Mena before, but what a voice she got on here. No contest at all!

3~Charles Brown - Please Come Home for Christmas vs. 7~Wham! ~ Last Christmas

The classic wins again.

4~Elvis Presley & Martina McBride - Blue Christmas vs. 5~Children, Go where I send Thee - Kenny Rogers (feat. Home Free)

This was a new find, but it's grown on me emensly over the time I've been listening to it. An awesome rythme and a great vocal from both Home Free and Kenny.

1~Andy Williams ~ It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year vs. 7~Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas

4~Bing Crosby - Hawaiian Christmas Song (Mele Kalikimaka) vs. 3~Steeleye Span - Gaudete

2~Enya - O Come, O Come, Emmanuel vs. 5~Carol of the bells (instrumental) - Orion's Reign

Just couldn't decide. I love Enya's rendition of Emmanuel, my favourite version of all, but at the same time I find Orion's Reign so re-playable with its heavy bass-line and guitar. Is it ok if both get a point?

4~Alan Jackson - I Only Want You for Christmas vs. 3~Greg Lake - I believe In Father Christmas

Round 1, Set 7!!!

Thurl Ravenscroft - You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch vs. Casting Crowns - While You Were Sleeping
Apparently I don't read very well. It wasn't until partway through "While You Were Sleeping" that I stopped and said "Wait a minute, that's not the Counting Crows". Then I looked again and realized it said Casting Crowns . It was a decent song, but "Mr. Grinch" wins on nostalgia.

The Royal Guardsmen - Snoopy's Christmas vs. Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Christmas Dreams
"Christmas Dreams" is not one of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra songs that I absolutely love, but I still like it. My room mate absolutely loves "Snoopy vs The Red Baron", but I just think it's okay.

Scrooge - The Muppets vs. RUN DMC - Christmas in Hollis
While I'm not really a big fan of "Christmas in Hollis" (again, my room mate really is though), as I've said before I really don't like The Muppets.

Alabama ~ Tennessee Christmas vs. Peg Parnevick - New York
Wasn't really feeling either of these songs. I like the second one a bit more, but it's not very Christmas-y to me.

Kings College Choir - Once in Royal Davids City vs. Abba-happy new year
Like Chyp, New Year's Day and Christmas are very separate holidays in my mind, so it was a tough call as to which one I should vote for.

The Season's Upon Us - Dropkick Murphys vs. Bing Crosby ~ It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas
Wow, the Dropkick Murphys sound very much like the local music here (contemporary, not purely traditional). Very fun song. I love Bing Crosby's song though, so this was really tough!

Christina Aguilera-Have yourself a merry little christmas vs. Mary's boy child - Boney M
I'd never heard Christina Aguilera's version of that song before. I'm not sure if I've heard that particular version of "Mary's Boy Child", but I know other versions of it. It's irritatingly catchy. This was another tough choice!

Bobby Helms - Jingle Bell Rock vs. George Strait - Christmas Cookies
I really like "Jingle Bell Rock". This is the version I'm most familiar with. It has quite a bit of nostalgia. The other song would have to be really great to get my vote over, but unfortunately "Christmas Cookies" doesn't quite do it for me.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Christmas Eve/Sarajevo [Timeless Version] vs. Madrugada-Lift me

Alabama ~ Tennessee Christmas vs. Peg Parnevick - New York
i like both though

Kings College Choir - Once in Royal Davids City vs. Abba-happy new year
abba is my nom.loved the first one though, thats the kind of music that is actually on the telly on christmas eve here.

The Season's Upon Us - Dropkick Murphys vs. Bing Crosby ~ It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas
this was aaalot harder than i would have thought.

Christina Aguilera-Have yourself a merry little christmas vs. Mary's boy child - Boney M
one thing i dont like about christmas songs is that the artists tend to oversing them and scream, and do runs on every ******* note.Christina is defo guilty of that,as she tends to oversing on everything all year round, but i still like this version.

Bobby Helms - Jingle Bell Rock vs. George Strait - Christmas Cookies

Am I the only one that this song keeps speeding up on?

Try this link:

Thurl Ravenscroft - You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AFUcLZExzlA)

If that song gets through, (it probably won't :(), please change the link to this one. There may be a problem with the original link. I don't remember it sounding like that when I originally posted it, so either the uploader changed it, or I may have had multiple YouTube pages open, and just accidentally picked the wrong link.

Chyp, you'd have to cut through the plastic, to get to the bulbs. Oh, I'm sorry. The cats would have to chew their way through it. Thanks for repairing them. ;)

Those new lights are great. And they look more durable than the original lights. :)

No problem at all, sweetie. We're all just going to get a lot busier, as this week ends. It's almost Christmas, you guys. Are you all ready for it? I'm not. I just ordered the rest of the gifts, and I still need to buy some stocking stuffers, food, etc . . . I'm screwed! :p

We have a great weekend planned, though. Cooking, baking, Christmas movies and TV shows, games, crafts, etc . . . I'll sneak on late at night for this. You know, like I already do. :D

I'm done shopping, but I wish my customers would stop waiting for the last minute. I stopped listing Christmas items so they would all be closed by the end of last week, but I just had someone order something else less than 30 minutes ago, and he needs it in California by Friday. Even the eBay page shows that it won't be delivered until Dec. 30th.

Scrooge - The Muppets vs. RUN DMC - Christmas in Hollis

Alabama ~ Tennessee Christmas vs. Peg Parnevick - New York

Kings College Choir - Once in Royal Davids City vs. Abba-happy new year When I'm busy in the kitchen on Christmas Eve at 3pm I always listen to the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols which is broadcast from Kings College Chapel in Cambridge on Radio 4 and the World Service. It's been going since 1918 and has been broadcast every year since 1928. It always starts with Once in Royal Davids City. It's a feeling of timelessness, even tho I'm not religious at all.
The Season's Upon Us - Dropkick Murphys vs. Bing Crosby ~ It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas - Bing's song is great but it's used in an advert in the UK that's been going for years so it starts to wear a bi, besides the Dropkick's video made me laugh

Casting Crowns - While You Were Sleeping (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jddK0JlhLjg)

I do love the Grinch's song, but that was a very pretty song that Chyp nominated. Sorry!

The Royal Guardsmen - Snoopy's Christmas (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sh-J4GSPgAM)

Wow, what a flashback. I had this album, when I was a child. I assume we still have it over with my mother's hundreds of albums from forever ago. I used to play this song all the time, and about drove my parent's nuts.

RUN DMC - Christmas in Hollis (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OR07r0ZMFb8)

Die Hard, anyone!?!

Alabama ~ Tennessee Christmas (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0dGJ4iKIbQQ)

Amy Grant does a great job singing this song, as well.

Abba-happy new year (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LRa8g-m4UNk)

Bing Crosby ~ It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GcZAwoip5aY)

Mary's boy child - Boney M (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8amHW-xdbzE)

I hate that I was the tie breaker here. Yes, I looked. I was hoping I didn't have to. Anyways, the second song was a lot of fun, so I went with that.

Bobby Helms - Jingle Bell Rock (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=itcMLwMEeMQ)

OK, I'll do my best to post both the winners, and the next set. I haven't been to bed yet, and I only took a nap during the past two days, that totaled roughly 3-4 hours. I'm nuts. :p

Joe Diffie - Leroy the Redneck Reindeer vs. Girls Aloud-Not tonight santa
sticking with my nom. but i really liked the first one,esp the video.

Bruce Springsteen - Santa Claus is coming to Town vs. Hanne Krog-Sonjas sang til julestjernen
My nom again even though i love Bruce Springsteen. Yet another norwegian song as i ran out of christmas songs to nominate lol. This is actually a clip from the movie i was going to nominate if we did the christmas Hof, the girl was tricked by her uncle as a child to go hunt for the christmas star, knowing she would get lost so he would inherit the throne by his brother. The King then banishes the star for taking his only child. Unbeknownst to them the girl was picked up by gypsies and travelled around performing songs and plays-which brought her back to perform for the king-a song from his daughter to the christmas star.

The Chieftains with Nanci Griffith - The Wexford Carol vs. The Kinks - Father Christmas
i like both for different reasons. The intro of the first one was so beautiful though

White is in the winter night - Enya vs. Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme - Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow
I actually prefer the second one version to alot of the others, but i loved the enya song too.difficult

The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York vs. Aretha Franklin ~ Joy to the World
this was reeally difficult.again i like both for different reasons.

Nicole Kidman & Robbie Williams-Something Stupid vs. 98 Degrees ~ This Gift

Zat you, Santa Claus - Louise Armstrong vs. The Smashing Pumpkins - Christmastime
this was also really difficult.i thought the piano part of the second one was really beautiful

Nicole Kidman & Robbie Williams-Something Stupid vs. 98 Degrees ~ This Gift - dunno how Something Stupid is a Christmas song, but I'll take it as a Christmas vid

Joe Diffie - Leroy the Redneck Reindeer vs. Girls Aloud-Not tonight santa
I hadn't heard either of these before. The video for the first one was kind of amusing, but I wasn't a fan of the song at all.

Bruce Springsteen - Santa Claus is coming to Town vs. Hanne Krog-Sonjas sang til julestjernen
Love Bruce Springsteen's version of that song. Hadn't ever heard it live, so the vid linked was interesting. Too bad you hear the audience more than the band. Rather liked the second song as well

The Chieftains with Nanci Griffith - The Wexford Carol vs. The Kinks - Father Christmas
Really wasn't into the first song. I guess it was Naci Griffith's voice (I haven't heard hear of the Chieftains before, so I'm not entirely sure whose voice it was that I found a bit irritating). "Father Christmas" is just fun.

White is in the winter night - Enya vs. Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme - Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow
That version of "Let is Snow" is the one I think I've heard the most. I really like Steve Lawrence's voice in that song.

The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York vs. Aretha Franklin ~ Joy to the World
Is "Fairytale of New York" supposed to sound like it's sung by someone who is completely wasted? I wouldn't have been able to understand the lyrics at all without them onscreen. That version of "Joy to the World" seemed even more upbeat than usual. Was nice.

Nicole Kidman & Robbie Williams-Something Stupid vs. 98 Degrees ~ This Gift
The first video was unavailable to me. I listened to this one instead (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hiocpD2TVuI). I correctly linked to the one I listened to this time, but I've never heard that song before so I don't know if it's the right version or not. If not, ignore my vote here and I'll try and track down the right one. My room mate likes that 98 Degrees song, but I'm home with my family now so he's not here to guilt me into voting for it, muah ha ha!

Zat you, Santa Claus - Louise Armstrong vs. The Smashing Pumpkins - Christmastime
That Louise Armstrong song sounds so familiar, like some other song I've heard before, but I can't figure out what it is. The music in the background more so than the lyrics/singing. It's driving me mad. I'm not a huge fan of The Smashing Pumpkins, and I'm not even that familiar with "Christastime" (I stumbled upon it while looking for nominations), but I think it's pretty.

George Strait - Frosty the Snowman vs. Celtic Woman - O Holy Night
Not really into either version of that song. Celtic Woman really needs less high pitched singing and more violin. The "Frosty" version was too country for my taste.

Sorry for the delay. It's a good thing I did that one set when I did. I'll do my votes, the winners, and start round two in a wittle bit. I'll be able to keep this going through the weekend, believe it or not. I've been getting all the rest of my work done, yesterday and today. I'll just be doing that cooking, baking, crafts, etc . . . stuff for the rest of the weekend, so I'll be able to do this, as well. So, for those of you who want to keep this going, you'll be able to, and the rest of you can just catch up at the start of next week. I'll be back soon.

I love the Sinatra version of the song "Something Stupid", and the version that was nominated is also a great version of the song, but I didn't think it's a Christmas song either. I really liked both songs, and I had a hard time deciding which song to vote for, so that kind of tipped the scale for me towards the 98 Degrees song.
