I'd ask who came up with that saying that God never gives us more than we can handle?
Anyone who's died a painful, horrible, grizzly death was given more than they could handle.
Any human born deformed that lived only minutes, hours, days or weeks was given more than they could handle.
All the people who jumped from the WTC were given far more than they could handle.
Anyone who's watched their whole family wiped out by a drunk driver, a terrorist bomb, a psycho with a gun was probably given a bit more than they can handle.
Cancer that eats through your brain, leaving you a drooling quadriplegic unable to communicate, but in constant excruciating pain where the last vestiges of thought only allow you to beg God for death is more than you can handle.
A soldier laying in a ditch grasping at his own intestines and screaming for his mother? Yeah, God gave him a little more than he could handle that day.

They handled it, though, didn't they? They had no other choice but to handle it.
No - they didn't "handle" it. They're dead or soon to be after much suffering.
That's not the definition of "handle it" when people say God never gives us more than we can handle. Handle means you cope, you keep going, you improvise, adapt or overcome, you ultimately return to what's normal for you, you find ways to learn or benefit from a situation.
It reminds me of an old adage that went like this:
You only have two things to worry about: whether you live or whether you die.
If you live, you have nothing to worry about.
If you die, you only have two things to worry about: whether you go to heaven or whether you go to hell.
If you go to heaven, you have nothing to worry about.
If you go to hell, there's nothing you can do about it anyway, so why worry?

Heh! This reminds me of what a co-worker told me once - I was complaining to her about my manager. He was MY boss, nobody else's, so he only had me under him in a little office purgatory he created, and he was so into control, manipulation, power trips and head games. The guy made my life a living hell for 6 years.
So when I was complaining to this lady who had an office nearby, at one point I said, "Why me? Why did I get stuck under this guy? Everyone knows he's insane, but because he's a direct employee and I'm a contractor, no one will do anything about it."
That's when she said, "Don't you see that God put you here?"
I said, "Why, to punish me?"
She said, "He's not punishing you, He's protecting your boss. God doesn't want anything bad to happen to that man."
I said, "WHAT?"
She said, "Don't you see - God put you with this man because He knows that anyone else would've killed him by now - God put you here because He knew you're the only person who wouldn't."
True story! :)

Well, you know, my ultimate theory of life -- my ultimate theory of the entire universe, in fact -- is everything is put in place for a reason. Everything happens for a reason. That's what I like to believe. And you don't even have to be religious to believe it. I just think nature itself designs things to be a certain way, for some ultimate goal.
As an Agnostic, I'd buy into that.
The one thing I do believe in is Karma. But Karma is not direct, which is why we must always strive to do good even toward those people or things that we don't feel deserve it.

Why?
Just why?
Ditto.
I'd ask who came up with that saying that God never gives us more than we can handle?
I always say that, and add, "What about those who commit suicide? If they could handle it, they wouldn't have done that."
Please explain pain. Physical, mental, and heartbreaking pain.
Yes, but it hits some people tons more than others. I still want it explained. To be blunt . . . Screw pleasure. I'd freakin' kill for a normal spine, once again. Fifteen years of hell. There is still a lot to be explained.
Dear God,
is the future decided already, or is it fluid?
There's pain all over the universe.
We ALL know this.
Some things are just luckier than others. But not forever.
I'm sorry, but that is not a good explanation. I know of people that have it pretty damn easy, for a lot of their lives. I want him to explain why it differs so extremely. I'm not talking about some trivial **** here. I'm referring to horrible pain, and loooooooads of it.
Did you drop me on my head when you created me?

What if we had a horrible sun?
What if our sun shined bright and glorious for 100 years, then died and went out?
We would all die.
Instead, we have a lucky sun, that shines bright and glorious for ..... I dunno, a billion years, whatever it is.
That keeps us alive.
Maybe the lucky people on this planet, who don't have the kind of pain like some people do.... help keep other things going for other people. Maybe the people who suffer from a lot of pain.... help something else thrive. I'm not saying that's truth. But what if?
The sun is currently almost 5 billion years old. It's got roughly another 4 to 5 billion years before it dies. It's currently middle aged. However, estimates say that Earth itself will be completely uninhabitable for any form of life as we know it in just another 1 billion years.
know-it-all Cap
Minus all the psychos, etc . . . out there, I'm sure we all have our place, and we help out in our own way. That still doesn't explain all the levels of pain, and why they happen. Sadly enough, for all the hell I've been through, for the bulk of my life, there are so many people out there that are way worse off than I am. However, all that does, is strengthen my need for an answer to that question.
Look, I've always been complimented on how strong I am. Compliments about me handling my physical pain, and for all the bad and/or illegal things that have been done to me, or at least attempted to have been done. I also have family members who know about a good amount of this stuff that's happening to me, and they broke down and cry because they can't believe how often these things happen to me. It blows them away. I'm sort of on a 15 year stretch, this time around.
Back when I was 21, working at Krogers, this one girl had asked me, "I've been working here for about 6 months, and I have to ask you if you are always this unlucky?" I responded with a casual "Yep!". She then replied, "I'd kill myself if I were you." :|
Did you drop me on my head when you created me?
No he did not. Because you are a doll, and your head would have shattered. :D

See, Destiny, you could have been a 5 billion year old ginormous flaming ball that's only middle aged. All it does is spin around and shoot flames out and keep things hot. And it's going to be doing this for another 5 billion years. YOU COULD HAVE BEEN THAT! You could be out there doing that right now. Talk about BORING.
Perhaps in our next lives we can reincarnate as stars.
Who's to say they don't have souls or aren't alive?

Destiny, you might want to check out the book "When Bad Things Happen to Good People."
To sum it up, the author concludes that God cannot be all powerful and all loving. If he is all powerful, then his actions or lack thereof demonstrate that he's terribly tempermental (vengeful, jealous, sadistic, etc.) or completely apathetic, and thus not all loving.
But if he's all loving (as depicted in the New Testament & various religions) then it's quite obvious he's not all powerful.

I've heard of that book, but nope, I've never read it. Thanks, my dear. I'll check it out.
Let me ask him ---
*whispers to God*
He said YES.
What a clumsy god.

Why God, why God do I gotta suffer?
Pain in my heart carry burdens full of struggle
Why God, why God do I gotta bleed?
Every stone thrown at you restin' at my feet
Why God, why God do I gotta suffer?
Earth is no more, won't you burn this muh'f*cka?
