I've heard that Parisians initially thought the Eiffel Tower was hideous and ruined their cities skyline.

I've heard that Parisians initially thought the Eiffel Tower was hideous and ruined their cities skyline.
True.
Ironically, (since it was featured in the first set of photos) many New Yorkers felt the same way about the WTC towers when they were erected - some felt their design was too static and rigid, and did not reflect the dynamic feel of the skyline. People got used to them and were sad to see them go (which is an understatement considering how they went).

Japanese War Atrocities

Notice how these prisoners are not behind fences in soft concentration camps and how they don't have bodies because the Japanese had competitions of who could cut off the most heads
err no it isnt, that is just right.. and hardly even worth a mention.. what the Japanese did to Chinese and Russian POW is scary and on a different level entirely
Two problems with this:
1) A thing does not cease to be awful/scary simply because more awful/scary things have existed in different places and at different times.
2) It was particularly upsetting because it didn't happen in a totalitarian or oppressive state. It happened in a free democracy, a place that's supposed to be different from the examples you just mentioned. The idea that this can happen in a place like America is, I think, actually a lot scarier than the idea that awful things happen under typically awful governments.
And I don't know what "that is just right" means. It's wrong to imprison people for their race, full stop. The people sent to internment camps were not known (or even suspected) sympathizers. They just had the same race as the nation we were at war with. That's not how our justice system is supposed to work.
Also, I removed that image. Please do not post gruesome or explicit images.

Sorry I don't think it is awful/scary and in that climate the absolute correct thing to do..
"They just had the same race" as if that means nothing during that time.. as if the Japanese didn't see themselves as the master race.
It happened so we don't know what could have happened if it didn't.. like Japanese spies sabotaging the war effort..
or the man in the high castle perhaps..
I just find it abysmal when people cry for this bit of history but omit to mention of UNIT 371 or Rape at Nanking for which there isn't even a word to express the acute evil and makes Japanese internment in the US look like a summer day camp.
And still widely accepted facts about atrocities are denied and parts of history are glossed over in Japan today and many question their sincerity when it comes to apologizing.
Sorry I didn't think the pic was any worse than the burning monk or Jew about to be shot but okay, fine..
The Rape Of Nanking
http://www.crimemuseum.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/nanking.jpg
There are no official numbers for the death toll in the Nanking Massacre
Sorry I don't think it is awful/scary and in that climate the absolute correct thing to do..
It's inconsistent with our laws, our Constitution, and our founding principles, so I think any argument in defense of it needs to be a lot better than a vague allusion to the "climate," as if all these things can be arbitrarily suspended
They just had the same race" as if that means nothing during that time..
It means that we judge people by their choices, not things they can't control, like whatever race they happen to be born into, and that being born into the "wrong" race is not a crime.
as if the Japanese didn't see themselves as the master race.
They weren't "the Japanese." They were Americans. Obviously, very few of them could have been spies, so what you're essentially saying is that it's okay to imprison lots of innocent people just in case some of them are criminals.
It happened so we don't know what could have happened if it didn't.. like Japanese spies sabotaging the war effort..
See above. Under this logic, why don't we respond to every crime by detaining everybody who lives on the same street? You know, just to make sure we get the right person, nevermind the 99% that are innocent. This, by the way, would have me in jail right now, as someone was shot at the end of my street yesterday. Thank goodness the "climate" in my neighborhood isn't considered bad enough to suspend due process.
I just find it abysmal when people cry for this bit of history but omit to mention of UNIT 371 or Rape at Nanking for which there isn't even a word to express the acute evil and makes Japanese internment in the US look like a summer day camp.
It wasn't omitted: she was saying something of personal significance to her. Specifically, that her grandparents had to face this. That obviously means more than something half a world away that has no direct connection to her or her family, and nothing about decrying internment can or should be read as an inherent defense (or downplaying of) the Rape of Nanking or any other atrocities committed.
And, again, one of these nations had an Emperor, and the other was a free society founded on natural rights. I'm much more worried, long-term, about what kind of things are possible in free societies than in oppressive ones.

I wonder how many of those Americans would have been happy to go along with the regime if Japan had won the war..
sorry but your constitution is a convoluted mess that nobody seems to fully comprehend, Americans just use it how they see fit
Do you think in that time and yes in that climate there was time and resources to Judge each and every American of Japanese heritage or could there have been more pressing concerns
Yes I tell you on the internets there is disproportionate mention of what happened to the Japanese (Nagasaki, Hiroshoma, US Internment camps) which is why I felt the need to speak up this one and only time.. just to give perspective.. whether or not anybody agrees I really don't care
I have debated this with a good friend and we kind of met halfway eventually and I am not completely unsympathetic, no doubt individual liberties were taken but I go back to the climate and what was at stake in a world at war.
"I'm much more worried, long-term, about what kind of things are possible in free societies than in oppressive ones"

"They just had the same race" as if that means nothing during that time.. as if the Japanese didn't see themselves as the master race.
Is this a joke?!
The people who were sent off to those camps were AMERICAN CITIZENS, many of whom were born right here on U.S. soil. They were not criminals. They had done nothing wrong. They were families who were uprooted from their homes, forced to sell, give away, or simply abandon almost everything they had and sent off to live in a f*cking prison camp because some a**holes on the other side of the ocean - who happened to be of the same race - bombed a U.S. Naval base.

Luckily you wasn't in charge of the war because if you were no doubt it would've gone on for another ten years and thanks for taking everything I said into consideration
What evidence is there that interning Americans with Japanese ancestry cut the war short at all, let alone by a decade? And even assuming this is true, are you saying that, in the interest of ending a war, you can imprison innocent people in violation of the Constitution?
Miss Vicky

Luckily you wasn't in charge of the war because if you were no doubt it would've gone on for another ten years and thanks for taking everything I said into consideration
I did take everything you said into consideration, but nothing about what Japan did excuses imprisoning innocent American men, women, and children without due process. It also doesn't excuse the fact that it wasn't until 1988 that the U.S. made any reparations to the victims. Yes, VICTIMS.
It was absolutely the WRONG thing to do. No argument you make is going to convince me otherwise. My grandparents came from peaceful farming AMERICAN families. What happened to them was a CRIME. Full stop.

There was a documentary about the photographer who went back and found her which is supposed to be very good.
I assume this conversation is basically over, but I didn't see this before, and feel the need to respond:
sorry but your constitution is a convoluted mess that nobody seems to fully comprehend, Americans just use it how they see fit
The right to due process is a fundamental right that has pretty much never been under question. It's not debated like the 2nd amendment or heavily interpreted like the Commerce Clause. Every modern democracy has something like it. You can't use a totally non-specific reference to debate about one part of the Constitution to handwave away the entirely non-controversial rights at the center of it. This is like saying it's okay to steal because you think the drinking age is too high.
Do you think in that time and yes in that climate there was time and resources to Judge each and every American of Japanese heritage or could there have been more pressing concerns
So, using this logic, if a police department is shorthanded, they can just start locking people up? :skeptical:
Since you mentioned "more pressing concerns," which is a better use of United States manpower? Actually fighting the war and producing materials for it, or rounding up people who are mostly going to be innocent on the off-chance you detain a few sympathizers, who may or may not have any impact on the war, anyway? Forget it being wrong or illegal for a second, you can make a pretty good case it was an inefficient use of resources, anyway.
And that brings us back to the question of evidence. Even if you think rights are cheap little things that can be arbitrarily disregarded during war, shouldn't the person taking them away at least have to demonstrate a clear benefit to doing so? This isn't skipping over some technicality to prosecute some obviously guilty person, for example, where the moral and the legal are at odds. In this case, it's a suspension of rights committed almost entirely on speculation.
Yes I tell you on the internets there is disproportionate mention of what happened to the Japanese (Nagasaki, Hiroshoma, US Internment camps) which is why I felt the need to speak up this one and only time.. just to give perspective.. whether or not anybody agrees I really don't care
I don't know if this is true, but a) you're addressing an individual human being in this thread, not "the internets" and whatever you may have seen on them, and b) maybe it's good that there's disproportionate mention of it, because free societies should hold themselves to higher standards. Self-critical, introspective societies should dwell on their flaws more than others'. The same is true of individuals.
I have debated this with a good friend and we kind of met halfway eventually and I am not completely unsympathetic, no doubt individual liberties were taken but I go back to the climate and what was at stake in a world at war.
Again, this would be a more compelling argument if there were any significant evidence that this helped us win the war. "They were Japanese and maybe some of them secretly wanted the Japanese to win" is not evidence of that.

So, using this logic, if a police department is shorthanded, they can just start locking people up? :skeptical:
No that's your logic, I am talking about a specific time and place and set of circumstances.. you can't just apply my logic to anywhere you wish.
Of course there is no evidence it helped us win the war but there is no evidence it didn't, goes both ways.
There is ample evidence the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki did shorten the war though, most are in agreement here.

No that's your logic, I am talking about a specific time and place and set of circumstances.. you can't just apply my logic to anywhere you wish.
The fact that you can't apply the logic elsewhere is, of course, my whole point. You wouldn't say it's okay to suspend laws and violate due process for lack of manpower in another circumstance, so I'm not sure why it would be okay in this circumstance.
Of course there is no evidence it helped us win the war but there is no evidence it didn't, goes both ways.
I don't need evidence to explain why someone should keep their rights: they have them by default. But you do need evidence to explain why they should be taken away. You wouldn't say "there's no evidence he committed the crime, but no evidence he didn't, so I guess it's okay to put him in jail."
There's also the factual impossibility of proving a negative.
There is ample evidence the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki did shorten the war though, most are in agreement here.
Correct, but this hasn't been what we've been talking about.

But you're okay with your photo of Anne Frank?
Oh for goodness sake that was not a photo of a dead toddler. I asked politely. Just hide in a link and give people the option of looking or not. What's the argument? Why do you think I provided a link to a photo journalist and not shove the photo he won the prize for down poster's throats which I made perfectly clear and right before you posted that photo, and that wasnt of a dead child. People have the right to decide for themselves what gruesome photos they see - it's not up to you. You obviously missed the earlier comment by the forum owner.

How is that photo gruesome? Yes, the child is dead, but there's nothing particularly gory about it. There's no blood. You can't see his face. Generally speaking, anything that would be acceptable in a PG-13 movie is acceptable here as well.
There's a photo of a person on fire on page 2. Where's your outcry over that? I think someone clicking on a thread titled "History in Photos" should expect to encounter some at least mildly disturbing imagery.

Jesus pretty simple request, isnt it? Placing photos in a link rather than the image is giving people the choice. Why on earth do you think there's a huge campaign on social media to stop people posting photos of tortured children and animals without a warning or hide mode. Think about it. Do you see me posting tortured animal photos in the animal thread?
Mind blowing.

From the site rules (https://www.movieforums.com/community/rules.php):
No Mature Content
In a nutshell: this site is PG-13. This means no images containing nudity or overly graphic violence. Exceptions may be made for things like classic art, or violence that is comical in nature. Ultimately judged on a case-by-case basis. If something is borderline, please ask a moderator to make a ruling.
That image is neither violent nor overly graphic. It's fine to request that people use links, but unless Yoda or a mod says so, they're under no obligation to honor that request.

To be perfectly honest, I can't tell you where the line is here. Obviously these images have historical significance, and I think it's reasonable to treat them slightly differently as a result. And I certainly do make a distinction between things which are overtly disturbing and those that only become so when you read more about them.
That said, whether or not someone is obligated to mark anything potentially disturbing (and I'm happy to make individual rulings as necessary), I would hope that people would generally agree to when asked. Obviously, some of this stuff can't be unseen.

Thank you. And I wasn't even asking for myself. I was asking for other posters who might be upset by photos of a dead kid that we all saw at the time not long ago. Not sure why I was asked about my outrage. I didn't express outrage but made a simple request. A little bit of empathy for others goes a long way, does it not. If I had been outraged I would have reported it, which I did not. As for it being pg13 - that's a stretch. Since when are real dead toddlers pg13?
This concept has been discussed at length on social media on why you have some empathy before posting disturbing images. The photo of Anne Frank I posted is on her slip cover for the diary. I should know - I have several copies.
I think you should edit a 'disturbing content within' or whatever thing into the title of this thread then no one will have an excuse for viewing it. Your (Yoda, i mean obviously) posts suggest you yourself think they are worth hosting on your site because of their significance.
Well, i think sensitive people wouldn't click on a thread with a clear content warning.
