View Full Version : The greatest T.V. series EVER made really is.....

HBO series that premiered in 2002 to 2008, and has had an influence plus opened doors in storytelling for many different shows after. I did a review on this series giving it 5 stars, it was ahead of its time, but the point is it still is ahead of its time. A drama lasting 5 seasons 58 episodes near 600 hours, there is not a facet of life untouched in Baltimore, Maryland. The series examines the lowest points of the streets, all throughout the schools, newspapers, dockworker unions, police department, city hall, drug empires, prison, it really goes on and on.
The first series where no one character appears in every episode, and nobody is safe, especially for the street characters. There is some comedy, its dark comedy, and most every story arc & character is based off a true event / person, many of which guest starred in this series. The good guys mostly lose, and nothing makes sense. Very realistic. The acting power committed to this series is as good as any show Ive ever seen, even Game Of Thrones. Many careers were started from this series.
I created this thread to drum up as many MoFo's as I can to finally watch this. Yes folks, it is that damn good.
Has anyone not seen The Wire? :)

My wife and I watched the first episode and haven't gotten back to it. I'm sure it gets good but we weren't drawn in by that little sample.
I prefer The Sopranos, Mad Men and maybe South Park but i do believe The Wire is the best show i've seen. On episode 5 on my rewatch.
What does everyone think is the best drama on right now? Since Breaking Bad finished there hasn't really been a general consensus. For the record i always thought Mad Men was a better show than BB but i realize i'm in the minority. I think the closest thing would maybe be Game of Thrones or Fargo.
My pick is Mr Robot but i know it has it's problems and again i'm in the minority.

It's a pretty good show yes but it's not my favorite...
The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Supernatural and Lost are better imo

Game Of Thrones. :)
Better Call Saul really picked up in the second season, at least it seemed to for me. Id say that or House Of Cards comes in second.
I think House of Cards has gotten worse every season personally. The first two were really good though. Westworld has been great so far; it's only 3 episodes in though. My runner up to Mr Robot would be Rectify.

It's certainly on the shortlist for GOAT, a very short, shortlist. Contenders for me, Sopranos, Game of Thrones (much depends on how these last 2 seasons go), the Shield.

Don't think i have or will ever hear someone say The Walking Dead or Supernatural are better than The Wire again haha.
What is everyones favourite comedy show? Think they need to be separated from dramas.

Gotta be South Park, just about the only show capable of sending me into a hysterical laugh.
Same, Gandalf. Really didn't expect anyone else to say that.

Sometimes they really just hit the bullseye with a piece of satire and it strikes my funnybone like a bolt of lightning. Nothing else comes close.
Same here. Have you been watching Season 20?
Mm. I disagree. South Park may make me laugh hysterically at will, but it hasnt scared me, enthralled me, made me run to the next episode, or scream in anguish from a bad story turn. There is so much more to greatness than just that one aspect. :)

No, like Tongo says I don't go out of my way to watch it but sometimes I put it on and sometimes legendary hilarity ensues.
I remember coming across the Jennifer Lopez hand puppet episode, the part where Ben Affleck (a recurring object of SP hilarity) falls for the puppet instead of J-LO can still set me off laughing to this day.
The songs they came up with too. Taco Taco Burito Burito hahahaha

We were talking about favourite comedy shows. Laughter is obviously the most important aspect there. Of course i realize South Park isn't going to be manys favourite though, it is mine anyway. Arrested Development, It's Always Sunny, Community, Seinfeld and Nathan For You would be my next five.

Great episode. The Mitch Connor reveal kills me every time :rotfl:

Ah, I thought you were talking about fav show ever, including all genres.
Nah, my favourite show is The Sopranos. What's your favourite Comedy Show?

For me it's Mad Men with The Sopranos as a very close second.
Comedy? Louie.
Louie is a good shout. I stopped after Season 4; the show kind of bums me out which is part of its greatness i'd say. Should get back into it.
Also Mad Men is my #2 behind The Sopranos :highfive:

I own all of The Wire on DVD but have never watched it. I think I watched the first episode once ages ago. The Sopranos is probably "the best" show I have seen. My step-dad started watching Breaking Bad the other week so I have rewatched the first three seasons of that recently, also great. I never got in to Better Call Saul that much, I watched up to episode two/three of season two and stopped, but I might try it again soon. Fargo is amazing at the moment, loved season two. Need to watch Mad Men as I know I will absolutely love that.
Favourite comedy is a tough one, really really tough. There's a lot I love. Having rewatched all of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia recently maybe that is the one that makes me laugh the most, but I feel like every time I rewatch one I think "damn, maybe this is my favourite". I will always love both versions of The Office.
And having said all that, actually, Twin Peaks is probably my favourite show of all. The thought of it coming back, and hearing stuff about it gives me goosebumps and gets me so excited. It has its problems but its magical, and I think it will be amazing to see it in the current TV environment.

I've noticed by your reps you are the only one who has been paying attention to my updates in the Twin Peaks thread ;)

Ooo! Thats tough! Simpsons and South Park for laughs alone, Ill say 1. The Simpsons 2. South Park, and 3. Cheers.

The Simpsons is a fine #1. Seasons 1-8 are some of the best TV ever; Season 11-present is just so awful that i can't think of it as one of the best overall but i understand not everyone thinks like that. I watched the first 5 seasons of Cheers on Netflix and liked it alot; must admit i got a bit burn out and haven't returned to it yet. I miss Coach :(. I thought he was the best character. Think i prefer Frasier at least so far.

Yeah Frasier would definitely be in my top ten. The only reason Id put Cheers ahead of it was there were so many great characters.
John Laroquette in Night Court playing sleazy Dan Fielding produced some of the most hysterical moments Ive seen on tv. He stole that show. :yup:

I never saw it - I hardly ever watch TV shows, but my favorites would be...
-The Larry Sanders Show
-Peep Show
The Larry Sanders Show Season 1 was excellent. It's a difficult show to find online though and i don't know any channel it is on.
Well Im on the last episode of The Corner, Ill catch up on Westworld, and then I get to decide if I want to rewatch The Wire, or one of these series for the first time...
Peaky Blinders
The West Wing
Oz (Ive probably seen 1/3rd of them when first aired)
Homeland (Seen first 4 episodes)
Black Mirror
Broadchurch
Death Note
Homicide
Southland
Spooks MI-5
The Leftovers
The Office (US)
last season of Downton Abbey
last season of Hannibal
Fargo season 2
Show Me A Hero
Rome
Mad Men (saw the first 6 episodes, and it didnt grab me)
other half of season 4 House Of Cards
Vinyl
Suggestions?
the leftovers is pretty good and has a pretty original storyline.
If you do give Mad Men another try all i'd say is you need to keep in mind that it doesn't really "grab you", it's not thrilling like Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones or whatever. It is pretty slow and you'd have to be willing to give it a good go so hopefully you get into the characters, if you do you'll agree it was worth it. Hope you enjoy it if you give it another chance.
I watched a few eps from Homicide a few months back; was enjoying it should get back to it at some point. Show Me A Hero and Generation Kill from Simon have been on my watchlist for ages as well.

Honestly that two minute clip of them just talking about the new show almost made me cry because of how amazing I envision it's going to be :p

I'm curious what you thought of The Corner, Tongo? I've always wanted to watch it and for a long time had a really difficult time finding somewhere online to watch it, is it worth my time?
It's on Youtube. It is practically The Wire before The Wire

A buddy suggested Generation Kill to me a few years ago, and I tried watching it. Problem I had was the same when I tried reading Red Dawn Rising by Tom Clancy, or the second have of G Gordon Liddys autobiography Will, I had no idea the terminology or divisions or any of the nicknames/initials of things they were talking about?! I heard its great though, and I liked Skarsgard in two seasons of True Blood at least.
Homicide I know will be good, Andre Braugher is soooooo underated. He should be the next Morgan Freeman.

I just finished it. It is incredible. Warning though, its so spot-on its depressing. Charles S Dutton should have won something for the directing job he did in this, and Clarke Peters should have won Best Supporting Actor for his work in this too (He played Lester on The Wire)

The Wire? I watched the first season, I though it was just a boring crime serial that is popular among some people in the US but I don't really think it was anything special.
An Aussie one I like :yup:

What is the best ongoing Drama?
The Americans in my opinion.

I only saw the pilot for The Americans. It was good, but brutal. I kind of got a sense of Breaking Bad coming from it, the neighbor being in the FBI (I think it was the FBI).
Game Of Thrones and The Walking Dead are well known, but right now Id say its Westworld. Season 1 of WW may be the best standalone tv season ever made, or as good as.

Please watch The Americans next. I'd love to talk to you about an ongoing show; you know how much we enjoyed our The Wire conversations. I've not seen the full show yet, i'm on Season 3 of 4. Hope you join me with The Americans here's the thread i made -

Just watch that video and tell me it's not the best sans The Sopranos opening ;D

Yeah great opening credits, reminiscent of Homelands, I will watch it but am leaning towards finishing that up or start up Homicide next.
I started The Wire but couldn't get a handle on the street lingo. The guy who recommended it to me said it would take about 6 episodes to get into the language but I think I gave up at 4. Normally If I'm not hooked in the pilot I might give a show 3 episodes then I just totally disconnect from the characters.
Most recent shows that gave me back that BB experience with champing at the bit for the next episode
Westworld
Night Of
The Crown
Better Call Saul I'm desperately hanging out for. Love it!

The Wire was fantastic. Some of my other faves were:
Deadwood
Peaky Blinders
Black Mirror
First 2 seasons of The Misfits
Better Call Saul
Fargo
Ha. Another Misfits fan. I dropped off shortly after Robert Sheehan left.

Gomorra.
Needs to be spoken about with the likes of The Wire, Sopranos, Breaking bad etc. It really is very, very good.

I watched the first two episodes of Homicide last year. I was enjoying it but it is just too damn long haha. Think i'll buy the dvds some time this year and run through them.

Never found one that beats it. Got to know so many good actors that I'd never heard of because of that.
Games of Thrones and Black Sails are close seconds.

The first season of Carnivale. Not to be confused or lumped in with Carnivale season II.
