ABC may have something really special here and that's probably why it won't last half a season. Oscar nominee Minnie Driver and some pretty sharp writing are the primary selling points of Speechless, a deft and amusing new sitcom about the mother of a special needs child, who is wheelchair bound, can't speak, and communicates through an electronic keyboard. This mother's primary mission to make sure this child is treated normally yet provided with everything he needs often causes the neglect of her husband and her other two children. Loved when the class gave the boy a standing ovation when he came in and he looked at them like WTF? This all comes into focus the second someone at her son's new school refers to him as "crippled." The subject matter here would normally be the subject of an hour long drama and the fact that it is a sitcom is inspired. The cast seemed quite solid for a pilot, with standout work from John Ross Bowie as the father, Mason Cook as the other son, and Cedric Yarborough as a school groundskeeper. Micah Fowler is a revelation as special needs JJ. This show deserves at least a full season which means it will probably be cancelled before Thanksgiving.

I haven't watched "Speechless" yet, but I DVRed it. (Hopefully I'll find time to watch it this weekend.) If it's as good as you make it sound, you're probably right, and it will be cancelled before I even get a chance to watch the first episode. :(

I watched it, liked it enough to watch the second episode.

Loved episode 2...love the relationship that's developing between JJ and Kenneth and the fact that the mother hates it. Loving this show. Also loved that this family refuses to do any lawn work or landscaping and refuse to be good neighbors.

Episode 3 was surprisingly solid...the writing on this show is absolutely superb and the cast is nailing it. Sometimes I think the character of the aide is a little too smart because it seems like JJ should be the show's smartest character. I do like that the rest of the family is kept a viable part of the show and that it's not all about JJ. I also love this backstory thing of the family being hoarders and slobs.

The 4th episode showed that this show definitely has staying power if it actually finds an audience but I have a feeling it might be too smart for the average viewer, but this episode was worth watching for the sight of Minnie Driver in camouflage clothing for the paintball scene.

The Halloween episode was a lot of fun...not just for the typical Hallloween stuff, like JJ getting drunk for the first time, but we got a closer look at the parents, more specifically, their marriage and how it's not all about their kids...the chemistry between Minnie Driver and John Ross Bowie is a pleasure to watch.

Just finished episode 11 and I don't know which was funnier...the planned/unplanned road trip or Kenneth trying to fit in at school with JJ. This show is still killing it.

Episode 12 was very funny and Micah Fowler continues to kill it as JJ...he and Cedric Yarbrough have created one of the most awesome relationships on prime time. Fowler really understands this character and is completely invested in every moment JJ has onscreen.

Ep 14 was hysterical...JJ the chocolate junkie stole the show.

Ep 15 was interesting...everything that happened between JJ and Kenneth was awesome but the writers need to be careful not to turn Minnie Drivers character into another Beverly Goldberg.

Ep 18 was brilliant...the reveal about Kenneth was inspired as was the new level reached between Maya and Ray.
