Times are hard for the once proud 'Boss and Entertainer', he's now a tampon rep who still dreams of fame.
Now I love The Office, it is the seminal comedy from my 20s. I love Gervais and Merchants work (Although Steve is absent from this) and have grown up on their stand-up, podcasts and of course films and tv series.
I'm pleased to say that LOTR ticks more than enough boxes to please even die hard fans like me. It's a great central performance and strong supporting cast. Very funny moments but a surprisingly great amount of heart.
Good Points:
Brent - Breakdowns, lost youth and a desire to be liked. Gervais is right when he says that there is a bit of Brent in us all. A heartbreakingly real character
Supporting cast - Ben Bailey Smith and Tom Basden are both superb
Songs - Worth the ticket price alone!
History - If you are a fan of Gervais's work then this film rewards your loyalty with references and subtle nods to source material.
Missed Beats:
TV Movie - I saw it at the cinema. Slough on the big screen is an issue. I think I'd score it higher on the small screen
Saccharin - Slightly heavy on the artificial sweetness. I don't need plinky-plonk music in order to feel sad
Verdict 3.7/5 = A real crowd pleaser, even for those who haven't seen The Office. Well Done
