I was a long-time poster on another movie board, but it became stale and tiresome. I'm looking forward to good things here.
As for me, I'm a life-long cinephile and love classic films in all genres. My favorite era is the 1930's and 1940's but I believe there are good films in all decades. I grew up with the sci-fi films of the 50's and '60's and, good or bad, I still like watching them. Musicals are a favorite of mine and I'm a big fan of British films.

It's good to have you here.
I'm also very interested in classic films and my favorite eras are 1930s-1950s...And hey! good to see there's another musical fan here. There's not many of us but there's a few.
I hope you'll pop back in and get to know the site. We do a lot of group activities which can be fun. My favorite would be a movie participation activity we call Hall of Fames or HoF for short. Anyone can join in, all you have to do is watch all the films that are nominated.
Here's a link to the current HoF which is about to have the movie winner declared. Then it will be time for the 11th Hof to start.

I've been there and it's not pretty.

I love Forbidden Planet – the design of the machinery and everything is just astonishing. It's great looking at that and seeing the seed of Star Trek as well.

It's great looking at that and seeing the seed of Star Trek as well. Indeed! I had seen Forbidden Planet before but it wasn't until I recently rewatched it that I noticed all the similarities to Star Trek the original TV series. This link covers some of them, but there's a lot more similarities too!

The Cage was on the other day and I noticed the resemblance of the arches to the ones in the Krell city. Jeffrey Hunter was class as well, and I suppose the kind of sterner attitude he had as Pike was quite similar to Leslie Nielsen in Forbidden Planet: "I'll have less dreaming aboard this ship!" ;):p

If you think about it, the basic stories of The Cage (Star Trek pilot) and Forbidden Planet are very similar.
I'll use the spoiler tag for anyone who hasn't seen both of these:
The story idea of Forbidden Planet is: a rescue mission is sent to a mysterious far away planet where a previous ship of scientist have crashed years before. They find a survivor, an older scientist...and a beautiful girl who's highly intelligent but has never seen earth men and becomes a love interest. The planet harbors a deep secret which we found out is, an advanced alien race had developed their minds to such a degree that they were able to create technology that allowed their subconscious fears to destroy them.
In the Cage...same basic thing. Earth men travel to a remote planet to rescue the survivors of a crashed ship. They find aging scientist and one hot babe! Who's very intelligent but knows nothing of Earth men. This planet has a mystery too, the aliens have developed their minds to such a degree that they can create dreams which appear as reality, those dreams become a narcotic and the aliens lose the ability to operate their own machinery, thus dooming themselves in the same way the aliens in Forbidden plant doomed themselves.

Yes – it was also very good how they developed the story (as a way of using the Cage material) for the broadcast episode The Menagerie.
